I read your post and the first thing I thought was FANBOY.
Best thing to do to a Troll.... Block the troll. Hey look another Troll.
I thought the OP was having a random discussion, not sure what all the hate is about...People are too touchy here, i read the OP couple more times, i fail to see where he is trolling the game.
Yeah but Manchine was upset by the OP because it hinted at the possibility that maybe the game design of WAR is very basic. To a Fanboy (which is what Manchine definately is) anyone that doesnt cast WAR in a purely positive light is viewed as an enemy and will be called a Troll in an attempt to crush any perceived threat to the Fanboys dream-like vision of the game. Of course more normal people can enjoy a game even when they know that it is shallow and simplistic as its saving features can be enough to pass the time in a reasonably enjoyable way. To a Fanboy though the game has to be AMAZING for them to get enjoyment from it. Its just standard practice on these forums......its just a pride thing I guess.
EQ, EQ2, DAOC and WOW were all the same way, they just hid it better. AC and UO were not like this and were what people call sandbox games, too bad they both were mediocre games and got boring fast.
Careful what you say there. You may get an angry mob of Fanboys descending on you with pitchforks and flaming torches.
Man, you sum it all. A ladder. There is a lot of things I did enjoy with WAR, but there where too much I didn't. And one of the main thing was this! It's a ladder!!!!! As I said, it will be a niche game, you'll see in a couple of month.
Oh my gosh! Hush! Be quiet will you! Have you no sense man?! There is far too much agreement with the ladder theory going on in this forum. The fanboys will hear you if too many of you agree. Just keep it down and pretend that its the new future of mmos and hopefully they will pass you by.
Superb post and many excellent responses. I might have to read it all again later.
It is quite amusing isnt it. I think its dieing off now though as Rabenwolf seems to have gone to bed. He left the Troll costume and the toy ladder near the door though so I think he will be back later.

The OP was not trolling the game, he was trolling the fanbase.
Well, Raben stopped posting in page 3. So he was either overwhelmed by all you people who know and can realize that all mmorpgs can be a ladder from a certain perspective. Or Raben went back to playing the ladder.
I would have worded a lot of things differently however. When you say things like "There is no world" and "There is no actual depth to the game world you are just asking for flames from players that very much enjoy the content.
The idea that you are going from the bottom of the ladder to the top of the ladder, yes this is obviously correct because in almost every MMORPG you start small and work your way up.
Thinking that the playerbase does not know the game for what it is, i'm sorry but it just makes you sound slightly arrogant. You are on the same level as everyone else, and thinking that you are the only one who recognized this is just wrong.
Regardless, you are for the most part correct (in my opinion). Just be sure to use a /flameshield next go.

I don't think anyone has really disagreed with the OP at all on his amazingly creative MMO Ladder Theory.
Rather they have just questioned his motives for this thread, what he had hoped to gain from it and been offended by his rather basic put downs disguised in some flowery language.
You see each zone I've been in has felt like a battlemap. It's like the game was based off a table top war game.
I used to play magenight. Even built an 8 x 4 landscape with houses and trees and debree and junk to lay out on the table. My own little battlemap that was very much like the zones in WAR.
I actually feel like I'm playing a piece in a Warhammer scenario. Isn't that what a match is? That's what we used to call them in Mageknight.
I'm really not sure why people keep bringing up the whole sandbox thing. I'm beginning to think that a lot of people don't really know what Warhammer is.
The only thing that would distinguish one piece from another on a map would be the paint scheme, strange how the MMO is just like that.
I agree with others. Saying that WAR has minimal customization is silly. You can customize your character more in WAR then you can in WoW, EQ2, L2, VG, and a host of other mainstream MMO's. If you're talking about the character creation part then maybe I can agree with you a little, but it's not bad, just not as robust as a CoX; nor is it any worse then most other MMO's.
Like someone else said, every MMO with a level based system can be considered a ladder, and I agree. WoW is no dif in it's set up. Zones in every MMO are set up as ladders, even a sandbox. Run across the Barrens in WoW. The further through the area you get the higher level it becomes, and WAR is the same; as are every other MMO I've played. You also give the impression that because it's technically only 3 zones that are divided up that those zones are small, and that just isn't so. Nordland is a rather respectable size, I've been running around it for four days now and I'm still finding places I haven't been. If you don't actually run beyond the pvp objectives the map seems small, but there is an entire other area to the map occupied by the oposite faction.
I also don't expect every MMO to be the same; so I don't expect every world to be laid out as a huge seemless enviroment that requires lengthly travel time.
However I do expect games built around preexisting IP's to actually reflect that IP in some way, especially if it's already a game in and of itself. WAR feels like a table top war game to me. I personally feel that Mythic did an excellent job of translating such a game to an MMO.
Well, Raben stopped posting in page 3. So he was either overwhelmed by all you people who know and can realize that all mmorpgs can be a ladder from a certain perspective. Or Raben went back to playing the ladder. Either way: LMMFAO
Hmm I have a theory. Now humor me as I come up with a hypothesis. The OP, has like most responsible adults a thing called a career. Perhaps he couldnt spend hours on end in front of a computer reading and replying to every post until it dwindled into oblivion.
Thus you most likely have your answer.
To everyone else who well...you know who you are.
You know, this whole direction of the topic reminds me a bit of a thing called history. Namely when our more primitive ancestors believed that the Earth was in fact..Square. Eventually someone came along and called it a sphere. Do you know what followed? Angry square supporters of course. They did not care for the obvious that they should have seen. No they were pissed because someone actually ruined their...er.. fantasy. They were so caught up in this idea that the Earth was square, that no matter what they indeed had to act like children and whine about the person who called it a sphere.
They even went off topic and labeled him a troll, and used whatever shmere tactics they could muster to make the Sphere guy look stupid, because in fact they, like many a politician will use any tool at their disposal to make whoever they disagree with look worse while they indeed attempt to look better.
Sadly for them, they failed, just as in this thread. I can say 2 +2 =4 and it shouldnt = a huge discussion. However, the truth remains, I brought up a point and it in turn caused reaction after reaction. Mainly some whiners calling it "obvious", but if it were obvious... why are they so offended? Why has the obvious turned into a long discussion? If it were so obvious, why all the frustration on the part of these fanboys?
Hell I have made it clear, over and over. I love the game. It does what it intended to do. Its still a very basic ladder.
What this entire thread's responses come down to is one word. "Denial". Those who feel that WAR cannot be a simple ladder, and that anyone who says so is therefor a troll, or has not played the game, or has not had pvp...or whatever lame excuse they can come up with to belittle the OP without reason or logic.
illusion. Some see through it, some are fooled by it. Thats really what its coming down to. From a designers point of view, WAR is a very very simple game that funnels everyone into these pvp moments while not really allowing them to wander off and get lost. This can be called a lack of depth. The illusion of choices when in fact you really have none. You are herded into one spot and its really a simple up or down process. Not a north or south and west or east process. Every zone is a box, and its one box stacked on top of another box with one giant arrow pointing UP. Each map is split with a road that destruction runs up and another one that Order runs up.
Think of the ladder. On the left hand side you have one pole that you either go up or down. Thats order. On the right pole you have destruction, and you can along with order, go up or down. Within each step is a map with an arrow pointing, up or down. Now imagine two people trying to climb the same ladder. As they go straight up, their feet and hands will clash. Thats the pvp we see in WAR. Its inevitable and focused because of the space in which those two are being force to climb.
I would like to bring up the image of a hamster in one of those clear balls in the middle of open large living room and compare it to a hamster in a clear plastic tunnel seen in hamster cages. Think on the two and you have a pretty good idea of the comparisons made alongside WAR.
My ending point, imagine what WARHAMMER ONLINE must look like on paper. You will have your answer. Its a very basic, simple game. Just like a vary basic simple model looks less basic with tricky high rez textures, but if you take those away you still have a low polycount model that gives the illusion of something far greater.
Man, you sum it all. A ladder. There is a lot of things I did enjoy with WAR, but there where too much I didn't. And one of the main thing was this! It's a ladder!!!!! As I said, it will be a niche game, you'll see in a couple of month.

Why must I have to gain from anything? Does the man who gives a homeless guy a 5 dollar bill gain something from the homeless guy other than the feeling that perhaps he helped some how? Perhaps the whole idea of a forum based on discussion is flawed for the same reason that someone brings up a ...discussion. Truly it is a riddle no?

lol - good luck, you're on your own now.
Thats fine with me.
Think on it if you will. You still go up and down, but the process of rising requires well.. branches off to the left and right. Basically, Each race in WoW has their own...area. The root. Each major city in WoW is surrounded by a newbie zone, in which those players then venture farther out from their races city. The farther they go, the harder it gets. They can head off in one direction and find the end game content in the west, or they can go to the east and find the end game content there.
What about the level 70 dungeon in the level 20 zone? You see, in WAR if you go to a lower rank zone you become a chicken. Why? because you are only supposed to go up. WoW has branches that you must goto as you have gone from the roots up and finding different pathways to varied end game content. While the pvp is very simplistic, the game as a whole including pve, is much less defined than a ladder.
In WAR the home city is the end game, and in wow, the Races home city is merely the starting point.

How old are you? This discussion is far from trolling and any adult would see it as thus. Report away, you obviously are the one here with an agenda.
If a topic concerning a design feature, nay a basis, of an mmorpg on mmorpg.com offends you, do please look else where for your entertainment and personal self satisfaction.

What is there to respect when the first responses involve lines like "you obviously have not played this game" and "you troll". Give me a break. I have people telling me about how little experience i have in the game, and must not like it, when in line 1 i state i love it and that this is in fact not a flame. Is it not true a lack of reading comprehension took place? should it not be pointed out? I wouldnt mind an answer if you have one.
Your view of condescending is merely an opinion voiced by yourself. I feel my responses were justified and mature. At this point, we have a difference of opinion.

In none of my posts have I called you a troll, or put you down. I merely disagreed with your point that character development was minimal. Which, when compared to most other similar games available today it is not and I think that your assessment of that was wrong. Heck I've even agreed with you and confirmed things that you said, yet you labeled me as having no reading comprehension and being stupid.

WoW has branches that you must goto as you have gone from the roots up and finding different pathways to varied end game content. While the pvp is very simplistic, the game as a whole including pve, is much less defined than a ladder.
In WAR the home city is the end game, and in wow, the Races home city is merely the starting point.
Think on it.
Can we get a close on this? It is very obvious the OP just made this to make a giant flame bait topic.
He could have explained the exact same thing in a different way, with being less offensive.
WoW is 100% exactly the same thing and I'd say it is not a niche game.
WoW isnt much of a ladder as it is a...
lol - good luck, you're on your own now.

So I'm reporting you for trolling, and going to try and get this thread closed. You obviously made this post just to start flame wars. I hope it is closed soon.
You have to admit that you brought that upon yourself to a certain extent with your condescending retorts and total lack of respect for other people's views.
