Is anyone in Beta at all yet? Even Alpha perhaps? Just curious?

No it hasn't started yet. The devs recently said that there is nobody from outside the company playtesting the game yet.

They are supposed to make some sort of announcement Oct. 16 at a game show that they are going to be at.

I don`t know. why don`t you go to the forums.darkfallonline.com/forumdisplay.php and do a search. I could answer your question but i can`t be bothered to help those who are to lazy to help themselves.

another fine example of the darkfall community?

That's the Darkfall community they rather respond with read the faqs or do a search just to improve their post count. I know one thing the DF community must be bored or really like reading the faqs because that's the most info you are going to get about the game but it might be fun to fantasize or speculate about a game like they do on the forums.

The news section is your friend.

They started hardware beta sept. 22 and will be making a big announcement of some kind at the Athens Digital Week, starting October 16th. They have said that they will not neccessarily be updating us when new beta phases start... so we are unsure on how much progress has occured since the 22nd. (We do know that they have gotten the patcher to work.)

Edit: There are many types of people within the DF community. Do not try to say that we are all the same. That said, people really should do some research before entering into a forum designed for discussion (please don't make me post the definition of discussion).

I am a skeptical supporter of DF. I am not a fanboi nor a troll. I seek the truth in every discussion, and I am truly sorry if I mistakenly state a fallacy.

has the beta started yet?   <<< seems like a simple yes/no question.

if it's THAT difficult to answer, then there must be a problem.

no one forces anyone to make a post, or read a post.  the subject of the post pretty much gave away what the op WOULD be...

why would a fan of this game, make a post being just a jerk, to something that should be a simple yes or no?

no one groups together anything.  one only has to read a few posts to see the truth.  it's not gamer vs gamer.  if you don't want to help someone, don't read the forum, don't post replies to questions, don't log-in... it's really not hard to not be rude to a SIMPLE yes/no question.

    Default Hardware Configuration Test

Hello, this is a small update on our current activities:

Since September the 22nd we've been running tests to make sure that Darkfall runs properly on a variety of hardware configurations. Any external people are being selected strictly by their hardware configuration and are selected and let in gradually. Absolutely no other criteria come into play other than hardware. Also, we are not playtesting. If you are selected for this hardware test you will be notified by email to the address associated with your Darkfall community forum account.

Once we've concluded this phase, we will gradually allow more people in based on various other criteria associated with the testing needs. We may not announce the start of every phase. All the testing up to the open beta phase is protected by NDA.

About the Athens Digital Week event, there will be a Darkfall presentation and possibly announcements based on our progress by then. Any information on the ADW site concerning Darfall is currently inaccurate and a placeholder. We're not directly responsible for this content but we've asked for the information to be corrected.

We'll keep you updated on any significant developments.

    Thanks for reading.

the above link, and the information from the link, took me half a dozen clicks and a couple of copy/pastes, and now the op has all the information the rest of us have, plus anyone else that might've been curious.

    wasn't hard at all, honestly.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

Well, it depends. If you are complaining beta hasnt started yet, then beta has been going on for years.

If you are complaining that beta has been going on for too long, then the real beta hasn't started yet.

    Your pick. This is Darkfall.

Beta starting in October and DF relseasing late 2008 was yet another myth to add to the collection. Those fanboys started gloating a tad early if you ask me.

Yeah, how can i believe the developers of the game instead of a random internet conspiratist. I've been so foolish to follow this cult. I'll join the Zealots of Truth instead.

wow, ok yes is three characters, no is two.

You typed over 100 characters, probably closer to 130 to say you could not be bothered to answer it... you did at least 33x the work of the LONGEST answer you would've had to have typed to respond to this.

Quit saying, "look it up in another thread." This doesn't make you look cool or intelligent.

hm, wait a minute... The game is set to release in just over a month and the game isnt even in closed beta testing?

Uh oh, Im seeing a disaster launch the likes of Anarchy Online!

EDIT: Nm, it seems that the late 2008 launch is another rumor. No way this game gonna release in 2008 if closed beta hasnt started yet.

It's not a rumor.  It was officially announced by Tasos himself, which doesnt mean that your concerns arent real... just clarifying that its actually an official date for release (well... not a date but a year hehe).

They have said that beta will be short. Also, the "hardware testing" is their form of closed beta. The rest will be an open beta (how open we do not know). Once again, they have said that they expect this to only take two weeks. I personally believe that this is too optimistic, but they could easily complete the beta in a month. After all, if the game is actually ready for beta, it should not take long to make it ready for release too.

Edit: the 2008 launch "rumor" comes from the end of the official DF trailer. Methinks it is not so much a rumor as some might try to make you believe.

As a software developer and a long time MMORPG veteran I know from experience that having a brief testing period is a misstake. A software, no matter how well designed, will have issues when it is released for a live audience and having this period short and thinking it will be enough is a misstake.

Balancing issue, loopholes, stability issues will all be discovered in the beta test and I strongly doubt that they will be, mostly, fixed or even found in a few weeks.

But time will tell I guess...

As developer you know that often developer declare a build 'stable' without anyone from public has seen  or experienced that build ?  How  are these developer  able to do that ?

DarkFall is in Beta since over a year , in this Beta Phase i think they worked on all what you mentioned... like Balancing issue, loopholes and  stability issues.  Why do you think the public outside is more talented in detecting those issues then the developer themselves and their chosen tester ?

These is a commercial product and as such its not like the open source applications where anyone can download the source code compile it and run a server and remain in beta for ever.

The developer say in nearly every update, we test and we test and we debug, doesn't no one read that lines?

200,000 brains are better than 200. No developer has ever shown any aptitude at predicting emergent behavior and the sort of ingenuity players put into abusing game systems. To a man they seem to be blinded by the knowledge of how things are meant to work not the way players will put them to use. Don't get me wrong long development cycles can be helpful but they're no guarantee.

The Darkfall dev team has stated numerous times that they themselves are gamers who loved games like UO and Shadowbane for the freedom they allowed the player. Current games just haven't been their cup of tea so to speak so they took it upon themselves to create a game they would enjoy. They did this using many of the best features from older mmorpg's that just haven't made it into newer games.

Newer games tend to be watered down versions of the older games of the mmo genre that are more accessible to a largerer audience due to the ease of play. Not all new games have done this eg. EVE online. But EVE is a niche game much like Darkfall will be.

Your right 200,000 minds is better then 200 in most respects but, when you make statements declaring the development team of Darkfall incapable of doing the majority of beta testing in house on a game they built I can only assume you haven't read up much on this particular project.

"The developer say's this"  "The developer say's that", They say many thing just to keep the masses inline. What a developer's says holds about as much weight as a politicians word. Don't take a car dealer's word for it until you take it out for a test drive. Might save you from buying a lemon.

I think you missed the point. The Dev's are much like typical gamers so therefore they have a better chance then you seem to think of comprehending many of the possible exploits.

These guys don't seem to be your typical development team is what I was getting at.
