As a software developer and a long time MMORPG veteran I know from experience that having a brief testing period is a misstake. A software, no matter how well designed, will have issues when it is released for a live audience and having this period short and thinking it will be enough is a misstake. Balancing issue, loopholes, stability issues will all be discovered in the beta test and I strongly doubt that they will be, mostly, fixed or even found in a few weeks. But time will tell I guess...
As developer you know that often developer declare a build 'stable' without anyone from public has seen or experienced that build ? How are these developer able to do that ?
DarkFall is in Beta since over a year , in this Beta Phase i think they worked on all what you mentioned... like Balancing issue, loopholes and stability issues. Why do you think the public outside is more talented in detecting those issues then the developer themselves and their chosen tester ?
These is a commercial product and as such its not like the open source applications where anyone can download the source code compile it and run a server and remain in beta for ever.
The developer say in nearly every update, we test and we test and we debug, doesn't no one read that lines?

Darkfall (and Aventurine) are the Barrack Obama of MMOs. Pretty, but evasive, inexperienced, and dangerous to the whole. But hey, why not build a campaign around nothing but promises on a foundation thats not even remotely solid?

Damn I missed it. Today our school was closed for some reasons and that means that I was free at 12:30, when the presentation of Darkfall took place. But I didn't know it. Otherwise I would have definitely gone there (it's about 15 minutes away from my house).
Anyway, I learned about the presentation some minutes ago from a greek forum I visit quite often. A guy who went to the presentation said (ok - almost said because it is translated by me ):
The videos of Darkfall that have been released on the Internet so far (the old gameplay videos etc) looked really bad compared to what I saw at the presentation. The graphics were more polished this time and looked much better.
There was a beta server (with a few people) for the presentation of the game.
In general, I would say that Darkfall Online is a hardcore game, with many interesting and unique ideas.

I have no need to name them. Aventurine has been careful not to say anything concrete in the past. They have never actually lied to us. Why would they start doing so now? It would gain them nothing.
They cannot lie to us technically, b/c they had said absolutely nothing concrete that can be disproved. The only thing that can be disproved is the wish list of features, and by never issuing a game engine for beta they will remain forever immune to disproving.

no, what i've been hearing on here is that the folks at darkfall don't do anything the way anyone else does.... which is why they can start closed beta in october and have the game in stores in 2008.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

no, what i've been hearing on here is that the folks at darkfall don't do anything the way anyone else does.... which is why they can start closed beta in october and have the game in stores in 2008.
They better get there butts in gear then, time is running out. If they would just go CB Game play with the DF community and not that BS ""pro tester"" crap they might be able to get it into OB at the end of 1Q 09. But that just me ranting. I just hate when companies do testing with so called pro's that don't find squat. Never have and never will.

depending who you hire if oyu hire non gamers then well... but if you have gamers then yes youc an get most bugs out of the way from what ive seen betas with thousands of peole havent help in anyway either so stop crying

but im 100 percent postitive public playtesting will start before the end of the year AT LEAST

Damn I missed it. Today our school was closed for some reasons and that means that I was free at 12:30, when the presentation of Darkfall took place. But I didn't know it. Otherwise I would have definitely gone there (it's about 15 minutes away from my house).

The videos of Darkfall that have been released on the Internet so far (the old gameplay videos etc) looked really bad compared to what I saw at the presentation. The graphics were more polished this time and looked much better.
There was a beta server (with a few people) for the presentation of the game.
In general, I would say that Darkfall Online is a hardcore game, with many interesting and unique ideas.

Beta started in September, people are in, as of 3 days ago we're still in the hardware phase.

I think the vast majority of us mean .... OPEN BETA! Play-testing-OPEN BETA ... that Beta. That's what we mean when we say Beta.
Not internal beta
Not closed beta
Not professional-tester beta
Not hardware-testing beta
Just plain old, vanilla, can't be misunderstood... OPEN BETA! Like the one that Shaar emphasized in his post when he announced the FINISH to OPEN beta (his emphasis not mine).
Was I clear enough in what people usually mean when they say Beta? If not... I can try to elaborate.

Open beta usually occurs when a product is ready for commercial release, and only lasts a few weeks. As MMOs become more popular, open beta seems to be looked at more of a free sample than the stress test it once was.
Open beta will come soon before release, and this has been confirmed to be, before December.
