Some of the mmo's that went for more realistic looking graphics have wierd looking avatars and crap performance, so maybe going sytlized is smart.  But even stylized could be done well, and I agree that if it has atleast realistic proportions that would be very nice.

Let's not delude ourselves. Star Wars was children-oriented back in the 70s, too. Actually, you'd hear no end of how Lucas single-handedly turned a profoundly intelligent genre like science fiction (which in those days was heavily into social analysis with dystopias and false utopias) into a shiny kindergarten. It was practically both the Pirates of the Caribbean and the Pokemon of its age. Even the cast and crew was making fun of the movie *right there on the set filming it* , calling Chewie "the dog" and such...
I'm a fan, but I have to say it's just ridiculous to think Star Wars is rugged adult stuff... It was just a good reworking of well-known mythological archetypes into space setting - with a lot of "pew-pew" and an annoyingly whiny protoganist (Why people knock Anakin when Luke was so much more whiny is beyond me. Looking back and seeing Luke as a cool hero must be due to the same memory lapse that's causing people to think Star Wars was ever mainly adult stuff).

Excuse me!!! You are kidding right? EP 4, 5 ,6 I would say that you are correct. I saw EP 4 when I was 9 and I enjoyed it very much cuz I understood the simplicity of it. Good vs. evil, with a simple easy to follow storyline.

Now as for EP 1, 2, 3, was not for kids at all. It was conveluded with a bunch of political bull that most 9 year old kids would not understand in the slightest. My son sat next to me asking, "What's that dad? What does that mean?" When I watched EP 4, 5, 6, I don't think I said a word to my dad. I knew exactly what was happening in the movie. Why don't you think EP 1,2,3 were not as big a hit as the original trilogy? Kid's couldn't connect completely or relate to them. Totally different story with EP 4, 5, 6, cuz everyone could connect with the characters and story.

I just think George Lucas is going senile. He made EP 1, 2, 3, and it appealed only to hardcore SW fans and may have made a few new ones, but was definitly more adult. Then he tries to target the kids like he did with EP 4, 5, 6. Guess what? It didn't work. He realized he failed, so he decided to focus harder on his target audience. He's doing a great job, only one problem, he's alienating his loyal fanbase from 1977 trying to relive his glory days.

when I saw the size of the hilt I started wondering for what reason. The only thing I could think of is customization. Maybe they made them that big so that when you customize it, it will be easier to notice what you've done to it or added to it. If they make them smaller they'd look like regular metal cylinders hanging on our belts...not special at all.

    ....it was just a thought.

I hope you like playing more of the same, because that's all you're ever going to get with that kind of attitude.

For the last five years, all we have seen is the same old crap rehashed, simplified, and repackaged as something new.

SWG vets such as myself, were spoiled by the awesomeness and at the same time, the wasted potential that was SWG. SOE underestimated the ability of their market to actually put time and energy into a character and really make it unique.

Frankly, players like you do nothing but allow game developers to hash out the same old crap again and again.

What we need is a complete change in how our society in general understands satisfaction. Everything is designed around instant gratification in our society. Whether it be entertainment, religion, work, whatever, fewer and fewer people seem to understand the deep satisfaction that comes from sustained effort.

    I'm still an atheist .... but .... Amen !!

Why is it that the current mmo gamers market accepts companies pushing out these boring, same old same old, beta products .... where are the days were these same companies actually had to work their butts off, and be different anc creative to attract gamers in the first place.

My main point was that Star Wars was for kids in its conception... Though yes, I'd say EPs 1, 2, and 3 were not exactly adult-oriented stuff, either. If a kid can take in the terrifying depths of Wizard of Oz or Red Riding Hood, my guess is they'd have no problem with the new trilogy, either. Incidentally, I've seen the new trilogy with kids, too. It was not the absolute joy to them that the classical trilogy was for kids back in the 70s, but they understood and liked most of it.

The problem is (this is where I agree with you), Lucas made the new trilogy a bit too plot-heavy. It's superficial to assume plot is the primary focus of myths; it's more of a vehicle for the archetypes so it should be simple enough to underline the characters' strengths and weaknesses and leave it at that. A crowded plot is neither literary virtue, nor realism.

This thread is reminiscent to the Diablo III palette-change petition. I hope the developers stick to their artistic vision. Some will hate it, some will like it. That's what art's about. You're free to critisize it, of course; you envision the game a different way. Unfortunately, you're not developing it, they are.

If the graphics are really that game-breaking to you, then just don't play the game. Really, consider that option. If you don't like the way that shirt looks on you, don't wear it. Don't like McDonald's? Don't eat there. Isn't life and choice wonderful?

I think LucasArts and Bioware have been in business long enough to know what they are doing. Will it flop? Maybe you know something we don't, but some people will play the game regardless of artistic direction. If you hate it that much, then consider my previously mentioned option: don't play it. Don't buy it. Vote with your cash. LA and Bioware are going to get the message that way: you didn't like their game...whoever you are.

Like father like son. I like the fact that both were whiny but neither was really my favorite character. Well Vader is cool villain but my favorites were and are Han Solo and Chewbacca from the original trilogy

I don't like the lightsaber hilts either.  It looks like someone's pet idea and the rest of the dev team hasn't figured out a good excuse to shoot it down.  Yet.

Then again if it keeps the SWG nutjobs away, maybe it's not such a bad thing.

Do you think because you see a movie when you was just a kid then this movie was made for you? Do you think Rambo was for kids too? No it was not! This is only mean your parents let you watch it. Star wars ep.4-5-6 was simple in his story but this was violent too.. do you thinks violence is for kids?  In the ep 4 when luke an obi wan are in a bar on tatoine and Obi cut the arms of a bad ass, do you think it was for kids? Come one i know in our society violence is everywhere but geez this is not for kids.. Shrek is a movie for kids.

Over here in Norway, I think Ep 5 or 6 had 15 year age limit... I remember cuz my Pa smuggled me into the cinema...

so much for it being for the kids eh? My Pa became a devout fan after seing Ep3, then turned me into one when I was old enough to enjoy it.

How could it(nowadays George thinks so) be for kids, when before, all the attempts aimed at kids flopped BAD? Anyone, kids or not becomming a Star Wars fan after watching the Holiday special? how about the Ewok Adventures? Those were specificly aimed at kids...  Big FLOPS.

George Lucas and LEC has gone off their knockers... I have a feeling it is because mosty of the execs of LEC are not Star Wars fans themselves, but regular business joes that never had an imagination besides counting $'s. So ofcourse, now they would try to target kids, as for a business Joe without imagination, it's unthinkable that ADULTS actually have fun and enjoy a sci fi farytale right?

Star Wars is a franchise that is geared for kids like few others.  I like the movies, grew up on them.  However if you think this is adult entertainment, then I hate to see the movies you are watching.

Ewoks, Jawas, R2D2, Jar-Jar, Anakin pod racing, Yoda in EP1,2,3, Droid Army...

Seriously, just look at the plots.  They are totally cheesy and are linear and simplistic.  Why?  Well partly because Lucas wrote them, but mostly because kids are one of the prime markets for the shows and the inevitable merchandise.

Even Ep3, which was supposed to be intense, was no worse than your average Cartoon Network show.

Mind you, I don't want my Star Wars turned into some kind of Blade Runner, but this is kids fare plain and simple.

  • DraenorDraenor Member UncommonPosts: 7,918

While it may be true that the original Star Wars films were geared more toward kids, I think that you would be hard pressed to make a case for the argument that the prequels didn't at least make an effort to entertain the adult audience a bit more...and the recent stuff from Star Wars, at least in the video game realm, has been much more adult oriented...Play through Force Unleashed yet?  It's actually a pretty dark game.

Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.

Star wars is Rated PG for sci-fi violence and brief mild language. (special edition, DVD version)

PG: PG - Parental Guidance Suggested

Some material may not be suitable for children.

May contain some profanity and nudity, mild violence, or very mild drug references.

So if for you this is for kids where is the world going seriously??

If you still dont believe me just go see Motion Picture Association of America film rating system there: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPAA_film_rating_system

And stop your this is for kid plain and blalblabla.

Edit: By the way Star wars (The original 1977) was rate 18 years old in the movie theather here...

and  the story of ep. 4-5-6 where more simple but where darker than 1-2  (3 for me was really not for kid this is a really dark episodes). For the Jar-Jar thing yeah this is more for kids but this 2 episodes where only for digital purpose.

“Today will be a day long remembered. It has seen the death of SWG, and will soon see the end of the KotoR.”

Sorry, had to get that in... I am still skeptical at this point about the new game, but only time will tell. But its still way too early for me to assume anything.

As Vader would say to me personally...

“I find your lack of faith disturbing.”

That Lucas always aimed Star Wars at the kids is not my opinion, it's what Lucas himself says and has been quite well documented through the years. I see no reason for having a fit over it. Saying "stop with the blabla" is ironically the epitome of childish behaviour.

Here are a couple of things Lucas said about the universe and the original series he created:

"I wanted to make a kids' film that would strengthen contemporary mythology and introduce a kind of basic morality. Nobody's saying the very basic things; they're dealing in the abstract. Everybody's forgetting to tell the kids, 'Hey, this is right and this is wrong.'"

"'Star Wars' was designed to stimulate the imagination of young kids. It was to get kids to think and use their imagination and go home and draw pictures and make their own stories."

Also, if you look back on its conception, Lucas was modelling Star Wars over the old adventure and space opera serials like Flash Gordon, which he was thrilled to watch as a kid. He was trying to create that experience of wonder from his childhood.

That Lucas re-tailored the science fiction genre for the kids is quite well-known stuff in the genre's history, you can even read a lot on it in academic texts. I suggest anyone desperate to deny all this should read more and learn more on the subject.

I think SW is for a broad audience, not only for kids. The entire politics and love story themes are not understandable for kids. It can be understood and enjoyed by kids, that was his aim, but saying it was entirely FOR kids alone is narrowing the entire SW stories WAY too much down. The VAST majority of SW novels for instance is really nothing for kids, maybe besides "Jedi Padawan".  Its just plain wrong to say Star Wars is made for kids. Its understandable for kids also, and thats something entirely different.

I wouldn't quote good ol' George really.

He's said so much up through the years, seeming almost never to be able to have continuity in what he says...

Come on, the love story was so bad and bland that any kid could follow what was going on in ep1,2,3.  The politics are not all that complicated either.  I have an 9 and a 7 year old and they asked less questions about any of the star wars movies than they did for Transformers or Spider Man and other kids fare.

Just beacuse it's a kids movie doesn't mean you can't enjoy it.  However, complaining that you don't like the anime style becuase they are "geared for kids" is really ironic.

Oh, and to the person who quoted PG to me.  That means parental guidance suggested, which means that I went with my kids and they were fine.  Rated R is an adult movie and I wouldn't think of bringing kids to them.  G and PG movies are geared for kids and Star Wars leads the charge in this regard.  Lucas has said it himself and if you look at the content of the movies it's not that hard too see.

I'm not sure why you'd even argue this.  It's not like you're less of a person for liking them.  I'm 38 and really enjoyed the Star Wars movies.  Yeah they're kids stuff, but so what?  Just call a spade a spade and move on.

Severed Arms ...incestuous undertones...and entire planets destroyed. Doesn't sound like a kid flick. It may pass as a child film..much like The Incredibles. Safe for a family to see and enjoyable on different levels. But always a franchise for children(?). Just a guess...but I bet Lucas started spewing this B.S. once the first toyline was put out by Kenner...and George...in between cleaning out the greed -induced loads in his shorts...discovered just how much more money he could suck in off of wide-eyed youths and their poor parents.

P.S....I do love Star Wars...i'm just under the opinion that Lucas has F@cked more children of the 70's and 80's than all the catholic priests , gym coaches and twisted uncles combined.

That reasoning would apply to 99% of all sci-fi/fantasy...and probably 80% of any other genre. The simple cheesy plot is the Heroes Journey...which is applied in 3 acts to just about every screenplay in existence. Sure...when I go to see a star wars film...i'm not expecting A Clockwork Orange...but strictly a film for kids?....
