as someone who was a long time subscriber (4 years 5 level 80 characters) this makes me glad i quit before the last expac. though i should have seen it coming when they introduced that friggen card game and how popular the "loot cards" were. people were buying the decks just for a chance to get a loot card. why not just take it to the next step and let people buy the loot cards.
All jokes aside - I quit eq1 because at end game it stopped being fun - and i hadn't even reached the actual level cap yet. I started eq2 and i accept that they are SOE and are there to make money.
They do a lot of things i find idiotic - this is not really one of them. This stuff is *optional*. and they GIVE you 150 of their eq bucks to start with. I've played some of the real cash games and I didn't stick with them. I have a subscription, and for now i will be keeping my subscription.
If you don't want the optional items - don't buy them. If you don't like others having them either, quit the game. Trust me. We don't need you. The only people who are going to buy some of this stuff are the fluff types - like me, i worked up to 80 carpenter and i love to decorate my house and guild hall - and the 'gotta get to end game!' types who I don't play with anyway. Heh - we turn our xp off half the time to keep at a level where we can get through some of the lower level content! I was much more upset about the stupid card game giving items from buying a damned card pack - i don't play those games. I really got annoyed hearing how people were shrieking that they had spent hundreds of bucks to get a shrinking cloak and considered it *essential* to their game play - and SOE nerfed it because it gave pvpers an unfair advantage because not everyone could or would get the cards.
I honestly have looked and do not see any game breaking items. I doubt i will buy anything unless its a omg awesome house item or a mount thats too cool not to spend some lunch money on. And anyone who shrieks we shouldh' thave to pay for in game items, I'd love to check and make sure you don't have a baby dragon in your house, or any of the pre-order items, or anything else that OMG is rendering your game experiance IMPURE!
hasn't blizzard also been talking about adding cash shops too?
Yes, Blizzard also added a cash shop with the last expansion.
Blizzard would be most surprised to hear this. Someone needs to tell them about the cash shop they added to the game
Blizzard already knows about it, so does everyone that got the expansion.. If you have it log on and check the buttons... (this is old news)
Haha. Not there. Nice troll attempt, but sadly defeated by absolute ignorance. 2/10, nice try. Next time try to think a little, and make it a bit more subtle. Yours was too stupid. Preferably you should know at least a little about the game you are attempting to troll. A bit of the terminology. Also, when referring to things that blatently don't exist, I'd suggest referencing future plans, or things that a friend definitely knows they are implimenting. Say you have screenshots of a beta build, or have a video, or have seen it.
In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.
1) This is a first and foremost a card game - and you don't have to spend a dime if you don't want to. We're giving away free starter packs to all EQ and EQ II subscribers
2) If you don't want to spend money on cards - you can get booster packs as drops in-game just by killing stuff. This means that you can also get the same in-game loot items without spending money.. including the rare stuff.
3) The game is intended to bring a different kind of gameplay into both EQ and EQ II - we want to offer greater variety of gameplay in addition to the normal expansion packs. Are we going to make money from it? Yes.
4) You will NOT be able to trade the in-game items. We are spending a lot of time and effort fighting plat-sellers and we didn't want to put in a mechanic that attracts more of them. THIS INCLUDES THE BAZZAR SERVERS ON EQ II (i.e. too bad.. no selling these items period).
5) This is not some slippery slope towards selling items directly in EQ & EQ II. We had a cool idea for a card game set within the lore common to both games. Yes, we chose to include in-game loot as part of the fun rewards you could get when you open booster packs. However, as I said... you don't have to spend a dime to get exactly the same things. I should also point out that these items are similar to Veteran rewards or pre-order items in that they tend to be more fun.. not some big powerful in-game item.
Station Cash opens up new ways to play the game you love!
Convenience – Station Cash offers convenience with buff and potions for Health, Mana and XP.
Sorry but how is this not unfair towards those actually playing the game?
Customization – Station Cash offers ornamentations to trick out the look of your weapons and spells.
Have no problem with this if it remains at the visuals of your weapons/spells
Fun - Station Cash offers pets as new companions for your adventures.
Well pets are again no problem within the EQ world as they are bought of of NPC's mostly or obtianed thru a few collection quests or treasure drops, would be something else if this would get into a MMORPG like SWG.
We also feel that the Station Cash offerings will appeal to every type of player in EQ:
Beginning Inpatient players looking to more quickly establish themselves.
This does not effect the gameworld?
Mid-level characters looking to advance more quickly to approach or achieve level caps.
Shouldn't a game company into MMORPG's look for more option inside the game to make it more fun so that people will forgot lvl'ng and have plenty of things to do that does not involve leveling but still is lots of fun, it's the part most developers seem to miss in my opinion is let the player get so involded with the game that he or she totally forgets about lvl's and when a lvl is reached that sence of suprisse of "WOW I had so much fun and already another lvl" instead of "Pfffff 10.032.00xp before the next lvl, lots of grinding to do....as many persieve these games as grind. Which of course could make this cashshop work for ......:(
High-level characters to more easily prepare for raids or starting alts
Again...does this not influence anything in the game world?
Those not really intresting into playing a MMORPG but looking to eliminate the “grind” for their main character or an alt
In a MMORPG you should not even WANT to have a ALT cause it's a community game where you might be able to depend somewhat more on it....
Don't get me wrong I also use alt's, mostly for the purpose of which class/skills fit me best but that is quicklely figured out in a few lvl's, but mainly stick with one at most 2 after those few lvl's , which I also mostly play solo before engaging into the community as I always first want to get to know my class and it's world he lives in, cause with a MMORPG it's good to get to know people and let people know you, swiching to several alt "CAN" get you out of touch with people already met.
Overall and fully on topic I still feel its a bad idea, because people regardles why they might use will get comfy with it when using it whem it's legit as I said many things in my opinion do alter allot of things ingame despite SOE saying they arn't
lol I was thinking Smed dropped the item mall idea, guess I was wrong. So let me get this straight, not only must you fork out money to play sub-par games, but if you want in-game items without having to play the game you gotta fork out more money? I wonder if it's exclusive items, or just items anyone can loot. If that's it then I bet they tweaked drop rates enough to get people to give in and break out the credit card for the item mall items. Of course the item mall items won't be named the same, but stat wise the will probably be the same as an ingame item you could just loot. I wonder how long this will last before people just go play a F2P game with an item mall.
So this should not come as a surprise..There will be many more companies following the same train..There are to many things going on..Cash shops and Pay to play at the same time? Hell yeah if they can pull it off..But in again there that fear of the Tax man (Goverment) also looming on the horizon whats his fair share(Little off topic)..It would not be to long before the free mmorpg come crashing down, you will probably have to pay to play and the Pay to play with cash shops going to get "spanked "by the players..Very fine thread these game companies are riding on..
This is a Game company tactic..They will feed very little to the pay to play players with a cash shop..Oh sure looks harmless..But then they will add alittle bit more then alittle bit more..Then they will have you right where they want you...Show me the MONEY cha-ching..
Some people rob you at gun point..Others will rob you at "Ball Point Pen"
Free epic mounts with cash (that cost 100 gold in game) does not compare?
I think it does
EDIT:
I'm in no way condoning SOE - I think this RMT thing is terrible
but I dont think Blizzard is much better
This is about the worst comparison I have ever seen on these forums.
Someone spends about $60 and they get
A game account, the game CD, software and 30 days of playing time
a 60 day time card which gets them.... .drum roll.... 60 more days of playing time.
You are out of your head crazy if you think someone spending $60 to buy a game client and 3 months of game access time is anywhere close to being similar to spending cash to get in game items. Not to mention your friend who referred you gets FREE 30 days of game time.
Doesn't matter how much I like the housing in eq2, how much I like some of the classes and areas or the way crafting is implemented, one potentional customer for any existing or ever coming SOE game less.
This is truely disgusting.
We aren't going to be allowing RMT in any way, shape or form on the non-exchange enabled EQ II servers. Period. End of statement.
Waterlily, that actually makes me almost physically ill. I'd say we should all pause our Blizzard hate to hate on SOE, the cancer of the gaming world, but apparently that's not going to happen because of trolls.
In any case, this is the sickest thing I've ever seen. Item mall retroactively made a central part of a game in a naked grab for cash.
I hope these dumbasses see mass desubscriptions as a result of this sickness.
You know I was almost ready to ease off of SOE. Maybe they knew what they were doing. Maybe NGE taught them not to screw up. Maybe they were actually going to try and make future games better.
No. They're a cancer. Those screenshots have convinced me. SOE is a blight upon the MMO community.
In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.
I don't mind cash shop games as long as the cash shop is reasonable. That being no uber high level gear, and no overpricing. This one breaks both of those so I have to say this cash shop is a failure.

Especially when you add the monthly fee you have to pay for those SOE games.
Does break a third line for a lot of people I guess: it's either cash shop/f2p or monthly fees/p2p, not both.
We aren't going to be allowing RMT in any way, shape or form on the non-exchange enabled EQ II servers. Period. End of statement.
Like I said before I also have no problem with cash shop games as long as the game itself is fun and good. (Which most are not)
I would not mind it at all if EQ2 has a cash shop, even if its based on a cash shop its a good game that formula can work..... But having a subscription fee on top of that is way to much thats just plain ripping off your player base.
It's 10$ to get 50% extra XP experience during 2 hours, lol.
You have to spend 10 dollars to have a mere 50% XP boost for a mere 2 hours? Geez. I really hope this doesn't catch, or I will not be playing MMOs.
OMG even the most expensive Free 2 play mmorpgs give you AT LEAST 10% bonus exp for like 15 days for 10 bucks. 2 hours? Thats pathetic. A total rip off. They should just get rid of the Subscription fee and balance out the cash shop if they WANT to make it cash shop. or take the cash shop OUT and keep the fee. They cant have both.. This will blow up in their face.

That's correct. I just checked my EQ2 account. I hadn't even noticed the Marketplace in the command menu before. All of the items available right now do not directly affect your abilities in the world. They are all cosmetic-only armaments, house pets, non-combat pets, or potions like the above that increase experience gain for a very limited time period. It's all the kind of stuff that people get for free just by being long-term subscribers and reaching the next annual membership rewards pack. But now SOE can charge flat money for it. *sigh*

Hey, so like, is SOE selling platinum to players for cash now too?
Or will that be in the next update?
I didnt read the whole thread so If someone has posted this already forgive me.
Smed posted this 08/05/07 in regards to LoN card game hsi last point is what i would draw your attention to.
forums.station.sony.com/eq2/posts/list.m
I wanted to get a few comments out regarding LoN.

EQ2 will be shut down soon and these mofos are just milking the addicts for as much cash as possible.
If SOE had shared this plan with ANYONE before implementing it, I would not have re-subbed EQ2.
There are just no good p2p MMOs on the market anymore. Either they are all WoW clones or find some other way to screw their player base.
And then they wonder why people unsubscribe...

Short Answer: John Smedly.
Hmm, shame.
ironically enough i was actually thinking of playing a SOE mmo this morning, was gonna give SWG a try. glad i saw this thread.

I am just apalled.
SOE is a cancer on the gaming world. I suffered with the NGE and now this BS.
If SOE gets away with this it will be the gamers fault. Also every game company will do it if it is a sucess and SOE makes money from this.
Its a sad day for MMOs.
Maybe the current govenor of Illinois can get a job with SOE when he gets out of jail. He would fit right in.
Support Bacteria, its the only culture some people have.
