Lets go over why I believe Dark Fall truely is our next generation of MMO entertainment.
New idea..... well kind of. Here we see the resurrection of lost ideas we left behind in UO. A few them being. Darkfall is a true sandbox. A world where the lore and stories revolve around the players themselves ( rather than some Lich King deciding to invade... I have to tell you I have never been scared of an NPC bringing his destruction to the world).
The Engine. We have been clicking on a target walking up to it and pressing one or two keys for how long now? This truely real time combat system will change the way we think about combat in the realm of MMO titles. While we're talking about the engine lets not forget servers are not holding 1-2 thousand people at once. Darkfall caps out at 10,000 players. Yes I understand eve has 30k+ logged in at certain times. Who cares, its EVE.
Lets look at what it takes to be the next gen and why I am using that term. The next gen titles break the mold in away that revolutionises how we see similar titles. It also inovative enough to send the entire industry in a new direction. No I don't mean allowing mounts to all of a sudden appear that they are a submarine flying in the air( moving a character up and down on the Z coordinate system does not constitute flying ) . Lastly, the title must be a huge success. What defines a huge success? That is for you to decide.
Stay tuned sports fans, we're on the verge of a new generation.

Yours truely.

Trouble is...you have no real proof any of its real. 10K player...OK, lets see it. No wait, all the beta tester/reviewers say there's about 200-300 online at one time.
Its all like that really, all a big mystery.....
Is it the 4th generation, lets see them get to 2nd and 3rd first.

What the hell are you trying to say about Eve? Darkfall will be lucky to be half the game eve is.
Next generation my ass the game is the bastard child of UO and Oblivion how does that make it next gen?
You act like noone has ever had FPS combat in a mmo.
I want to play DF just as much as the next guy but calling DF next gen is a laugh. Mortal online should be exactly like DF with graphics ten times as good and noone is calling that next gen, you fanbois are crazy.
Darkfall = UO with oblivion combat nothing more.

For it to be called next genration, the game have to have stuff we never seen before in other MMOs.
Much of the stuff from the game comes from UO, Shadowbane and EQ so I fail to see why this should be a new generation.
Let's look on som old next gen games:
Half life: Totally changed FPS games for ever.
Total Anhilation: The first 3D RTS game.
Doom: Kinda created the FPS genre together with Quake
Diablo: A new way for the action RPG genre.
Baldurs gate: The game that changed RPG games for ever.
The question is, are Darkfall really in the same class as they were?
I have not read anything about that much new thinking in DF, the game surely sounds intresting but it is hardly a next gen game. And People said the same thing about LOTRO, AoC and WAR just before they launched.
If they game will be a succes is another matter, it might or not, hard to say yet.
...... Damn, that sounds like 1 hell of a baby. Count me in
Eve would have been a great game if it wasnt based of real life time skill ups.
Read the green. You do know how incredibly modest eve's starting was...
And the idea of having oblivion combat and bringing back old game mechanics that would make a game 10x more deeper, does justify calling an mmo next generation. Its one generation above the current generation (even though the current generation is like a step back from the last generation... so that would make this game 3rd generation if succesful?)

I don't think so. While Having qualities of both UO and elderscrolls is wonderful (hell ill be there playing DF with you). I don't consider a rehash next gen. What is DF bringing to the table that hasent been done before?

I agree. Darkfall will be in the 4th generation of mmo's.
Time will tell if it is a good 4th generation mmo or a bad 4th generation mmo.
You do realize that the word 'generation' only puts something on a timeline, it has no bearing on quality.
But don't feel bad, millions of others have let advertisers influence them to think that the word 'generation' or phrase 'next generation' actually means 'the best'. It doesn't. It only refers to its spot on the mmo timeline.
IMO!
1st Gen PnP
2nd Gen Pixels
3rd Gen True Virtual Reality (not the crap at the amusement park)
4th Gen... Not DF

any progress is a "new generation". Bringing back old things, repackaging them, and implimenting them well with new features like fps combat, and a gigantic player world does count as next gen, atleast as most people refer to generations (there has been no successful mmo with a gigantic world and fps like combat, the failures don't count, Dark and Light had potential to be next gen but it failed and is nonexistant, so its not a next gen game.)
All this, of course, only applies if the game is successful.
EDIT: now that i think about it, I'm going to have to call EVE the 1st fourth generation mmo

what does darkfall bring to the table that others dont?
nothing but its all in one package instead of spread out over 4 games.

AS a Eve fan I would love to agree with that statement but Eve is basically UO and Elites bastard child.
I havent seen any mmo that has brought something totally new to the table since UO.

If ur going to put it that way I guess WoW is also a forth gen MMO since it has features in one game that were spread over 4-5 games before it....... god I just threw up in my mouth a little.

EVE is a great game because of the real life time skill ups. All a matter of perspective.
But staying on topic, I agree, DF should be the 2nd coming of UO, but hardly anything revolutionary.
That said, I missed out on UO, so I'm looking forward to playing DF.

Geeze, by your LOOSE definition of generation we should be on the what? 247th generation by now? ffs get over yourself lol. Whether darkfall is good or not we will all see but just because you or some marketer decides this or that makes next generation or not does not make it so.
Again, like a number of people throughout the internet you endeavor to bolster your position by claiming a generality like "most people". How many people have you polled? Have you polled a halfway decent size of the mmo game players to come up with your generalities? Doubtful. Is it because you feel that pulling something out of your backside like "most people" will lend credence to your failure of an argument? The people CLAIMING next gen status for any game fall into 1 of 2 categories: Marketers and Fanbois. So, which one are you?

b/c UO brought so much to the table, but left so much to want, like better graphics (that was a big one). And despite what you think, everything in UO was NOT implimented perfectly. Part of the reason for the demise of the pre-trammel PK system is not just b/c of carebears, but b/c of griefing. If successful ( I say again) DF will have FAR less griefing than UO b/c of the huge gameworld, skill based combat, etc.

It has more than enough unique featres to make it revolutionary, the twitch combat being the tip of the iceberg. Physics based, collision detection, aiming of spells and arrows, responsive to wind and weather physics, sailing, ship combat, mounted combat. Just the combat alone (a fraction of the game) is more than enough to make this the first real next gen title since EQ.

I never said everything in UO was implemented perfectly.
The reason UO failed was due to griefing once trammel entered the scene people that didnt want to be victims left to play on carebear server.
How will DF stop the griefing? I know Eve does it with High sec space what will DF do?
You consider graphics as next gen? If thats the case MUDS were 10th generation cause nothing has ever looked as good as the images i've taken away from those games that were in my head.

The real question here is what exactly is "Next Gen"? It seems that everyone has their own personal definition of what that term means. To me personally all "Next Gen" means is that some game company is trying to hype their game with made up buzz words. "Next Gen" is a fantasy creation as it will never exist. The only thing that does exist is current and past gen because when a "Next Gen" game gets released it becomes current gen. It's like the old saying "Tomorrow will never come, it's always a day away" because by the time it gets here it's today. But then again what is tomorrow but yesterday's today?

This. Very true.
Until an MMO comes along that lets me use my own hands as controls instead of Keyboards and Mouse, that lets me -BE- my character in a Virtual Reality environment, all games are not "next-gen". When I enter the Matrix the first time -THAT- will be next gen.
The only thing that next-gen is, is a hype word for dev's to throw around when they want to hook players to a concept.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?

Thats thinking of games where technology is the only thing that dictates an evolution. In that case Sega Genesis, Xbox 360, NES, Playstation 1,2,3, and a slew of other system would all be just first gen. Then that would also mean that the only second gen gaming cosole is Wii. See how flawed of a view on games that creates. When people say "Generation in referring to MMO's" they are more talking about the Era and gameplay not the technology.

All of that has been done before and some of it probably won't be in the game.
Name me one MMO that has all of that and I'll go play it, you're a moron. I've been playing MMOs for 10 years and NONE have that.
i'm sorry, did darkfall actually release and i missed it?
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
so many nay sayers,
I love how you are going to feel in your head when this game launches and it is amazing.
This is the 4th generation of the MMO. UO wishes they could do this. Yes UO had a good concept but really guys? we are light years away from what that game was with this. perhaps some of you need to watch darkfalls recent trailer.
x_-
No one MMO has all of that. Darkfall doesn't either. Other games have had some of those things. None of those things is new or exclisive to Darkfall. . Darkfall does not have weather physics. It may have some algorithms to simulate some of the effects of weather but that's it. You might want to learn to read before calling other people morons. Oh and I've been playing multiplayer online games for 25 years so you can put your pathetic boast boast away.
WOWZERS, 25 years? What were the games you were playing? checkers, chess?
