So, after reading the Noob Reviews I thought I'd post my own insight on a different thread, as both of those threads seem to .. well step away from the OP.
It seems Darkfall is going more and more away from a typical MMORPG with full loot, and more into a persistent FPS, sort of like a continuing CoD4 map, that just doesn't end, but instead of guns, you have swords.
Then, after reading about "power ups" and "Skills you purchase" it is becoming less and less interesting.
The way I'm seeing Darkfall now is just another PlanetSide, but instead of blasters and guns, you have the swords and spells. Horses are vehicles and the like. The biggest difference in actual play is the addition of dropping your 'cool gear' when you die.
Now, how is this revolutionary?

Its because the sambox style gameplay. And yes, you have to get the skill in the first place by a trainer to be able to raise it by training.
I really hope you are correct, if this the logical progression of a merger between fps and mmorpg then it will make myself and a lot of other people very happy. I think in reality though it will be far more weighted towards mmorpg elements, not that that's bad either though.

This is the main question i ask myself. More FPS or more RPG? If it is too much wheighted towars FPS elements for my taste i'm not going to call Darkfall my home. I know the answer will need some time of actual game play.
It's an interesting topic really as when people talk about mmorpg they bring many preconceptions based on what they have experienced in previous games. Personally I do not think that designers should be looking too much at what has come before, except maybe the glaring failures in game design, they should be interpreting what a massive rpg world / game is in their own way and construct it based on their own unique concept. By doing this we will get more unique gaming experiences.
Darkfall is a MMORPG with FPS/TPS combat.
I don't know why this is such a hard concept to understand for some ppl.
Where did she mention "power ups" in her review. And yes you purchase skills...just like almost every other MMO ever made.
It will only be planetside if there is no real persistant world to speak of.
Darkfall promises a very persistant world that the players evolve over a long period of time.
Play DMoMM multiplayer, reminded me of the Darkfall vids.
BUT THAT'S ONLY CAUSE I GOT MY TASOS-GLASSES ON

The only thing I can think of as revolutionary about DFO is their marketing strategy, or lack thereof.
I acctually liked planet side.
there isnt anything revolutionary or new to it.

Right. I keep seeing the fanboys say how revolutionary this game is, then they follow it up with a long list of features we have all seen before in other games.

The plural is here of importance...cause like examined in other thread Naval Warfare + Full loot + crafting + land to sea shore combat / shore to sea combat + friendly fire + manual aiming + mounted combat + city building /sieging + collision detection + physics + sandbox + freedom to train every skill + massive scale battles is hardly seen in others MMO together in one place.
You can of course start to pay 3 or 4+ subscriptions to find that all..

They take skillbased a bit extreme, but for that part it is something new. (like Spellborn, Mortal and partly AoC tried)
It is not an fps as rounds are not over and you restart with your things, but balancing that thing will be a nightmare anyway. Planetside is a fun fps game, but darkfall probably will try to provide a persistant/interactive world where your actions have consequences instead getting reset after logging out.
The game will definitely have its fault and nightmares, but at least they try something different.
my worry is that the game is becoming the OPPOSITE, with slug combat and gigantic hitboxes, it's combat may just be Guild Wars without autoaim. What noob reviews are you reading?

It is not. A sandbox could as well use the system from Oblivion where you raise your skills by using them. The big difference with a sandbox and a theme park are that in a sanbox players both craft most items and that there is no real linear plot, players choose themselves what to do.
You could do many variations with a sandbox styled game.

um in DF the best weapons will be player crafted and there's no real linear plot, you can skill up w/e you want.... why is it not sandbox?

Keep grasping, thats like saying when they started putting CD players AND TVs in cars that they revolutionized the automobile.

Darkfall Recap of everything that has happened the last 3 months: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/213296
"The monsters are tough. I was looking for a challenge, but these things are just too damn smart." -DF Beta Tester
"If people were dismissing it, then they wouldn't be talking about it. The well-meaning gamers root for efforts that try to raise the bar. So who's left? It's so easy being a skeptic." -Tasos
That's pretty much it, all of the features have been in other games but bringing them all together in a peristant world has not been seen before. It's a bit like a pick 'n mix of a lot of good tried and tested game features from across various genre's.

Yeah but calling it revolutionary for putting a bunch of already tried and true concepts into one game? Hardly.
Just because you were the first to put peanut butter, sardines, and guacamole on a pizza doesnt mean you revolutionized the pizza.
I believe that - considering the way nearly every MMORPG has been constructed since WoW released - this game should be considered revolutionary. Because it will hopefully be using many RPG gameplay elements again that, for all practical purposes, are dead and buried right now. But no - ideas rarely come forth that are truly 'new'. You could say that da Vinci invented the helicopter in the 15th century, or trace every possible literary plot device back to the ancient Greeks, etc.. But that wouldn't be an entirely fair or accurate way to view all current creations.
As for the FPS elements Darkfall may incorporate, we'll just have to wait and see how smoothly these will play out. I'm an old dude whose reflexes are probably shot, so I am a little worried about it. But I'm still (probably) going to give Darkfall a shot anyway.
if all the ingredients in your new recipe tasted good together (imagine using sensible ingredients), and it became popular and started making money,
then yes.
all individual elements of EVERYthing in this world already exist.
its making the new excellent combinations that nobodies done right before that cause revolutions.
that shouldn't be so hard to grasp

I cant believe you compared DFO to something da Vinci created.
DFO is doing exactly what WoW did, take other peoples ideas, smash em together and pawn it off as new.
You are talking about a variation on a tried and true platform. Just because you made a sandwich with new ingredients does not mean you revolutionized the whole concept of a sandwich.
And when did making money constitute grounds to call it revolutionary? When I think revolutionary I think of things that havent ever been done before.

here is it ..DarkFall hasn't been done before.
All what has been done looks different then what DarkFall is.
Whats left is for it to be successfully to lead into a change of paradigm..
-to be fair i am with you about DF has things invented as entirely new..we will see that ...but what i thinking is DarkFall as the true inheritor of MMO genre and hope with DF real MMO will re-establish and we can get rid of MMO theme-park abortions that took wrongful the MMO title..they hardly earned the word (M)assive(MO) if they run in instances and you don't have the freedom to run to everywhere and meet with everyone to do everything with an massive amount of people ...
