With all do respect, SWG has been around since 2003 and the game is'nt as strong as it was back in them days. The game is'nt even the same SWG to me. It has switched from a Sandbox MMO to a Linear MMO.

However I havent heard of the game closing anytime soon. The new KoToR Online isnt coming out anytime soon, so I would have to say, if you like playing SWG in the state that it is in now, then why not.

The success of TOR will probably decide it's fate.  For now it will limp along with the sub base it has now.

We can only hope. The game has had mortal wounds, and been twitching on life support for 3 years now. Time to put it out of it's misery.

Specifically to the OP, the Smedmister has mentioned "Sunsetting" SWG in the future, and I wouldn't be surprised if they are forced to when TOR comes out.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

SWG is a busy and successful MMORPG and growing every day.

It will always be the only MMORPG where you can live out the Star Wars Movies and that will keep it going for many years to come.

Just so you know sandbox means you can place stuff anywhere in the world like harvesters and houses and linear means you have to stick with what you see and cant alter it, and since SWG you can still place houses and stuff that makes it still a sandbox game.

I don't think it will closing soon.

Tabula Rasa was killed after just a year or so. Not even free to play. That game must have had it worse then SWG.

SWG, now five years and still online. My server still have a great population and the Devs still make new updates for the game.

If they had a plan to close it, then why spend money on people to work on it more?

I think it will be going for a long time. It's a Star Wars game. ^^

I laugh at the comments of some of these people who think the old republic will cause SWG to shut down. Will see if that game is even in development by the end of the year considering huge the financial loss both EA and Bioware took due to the economy.

If you think  SWG isn't making SoE money then you have no clue. even with a 50k player-base SWG is making them money.

All the costs of that games development were already covered by the 6th month of the game being live. its been nothing but money ever since for SoE.

SWG would have stayed a great game if LucasArts and SoE didn't mess it up but its still profitable for SoE none the less.

I think I will start with a short statement on this thread;  Starwars Galaxies offers a player the oppertunity to play in the Starwars world. No other game offers this at the same level.

    To answer the closeing down question;

If this had been any other game then yes, it would have been taken out back and shot.

However the very name STARWARS makes this a game that will not die.. not until there is a followup, or heir to that throne. When (and it is only a question of time) this occours, Lucasart will pull the plug on SWG.

Lucasart runs the show here, there is no question about that. The power behind the brandname Starwars is very strong, and that alone keeps this old mammoth alive.

I would advice you to stick with SWG if you like what it has become, I play it from time to time myself. But it will never be the same as it was before the big changes.

    Best of luck

Come on Badger be reasonable.  Only a few servers are busy thanks to the transfers.  What of the  remaining servers....busy?  No. Not at all.   The growth you speak of is false and you know it.  Add to that another vet trial is on and there you go.  It is artificial.  Smoke and mirrors.

Your definition of success must be different than most people.  This title has the worse reputation in the industry and it is well deserved.  Development has been a revolving door.  The code is a mishmash of 3 versions of the game that even the developers themselves admit they do not understand it.

Smed himself stated he does not know what will happen with TOR is released.  He spoke of sunsetting.  Of course anything he says should be questioned admittedly.

As for living out the in the Star Wars movie era...yeah...I remember when Luke and Han was frolicking through the Endor woods with the Ewok cherubs waxing poetically that "This is Love".  Epic.

Stop drinking the koolaid and be honest with people about this game.

i would very much like to hear your definition of "successful".

it has lost 300k + subs and currently dwingles at 10-15k with half the servers empty - those servers which are not empty are crawling with lag which resulted from an insane speed boost brought by the nge, particle effects galore, former players which returned during their trial to check on their houses and people from other servers which migrated.

on top of that, they have made a mockery out of star wars by adding content and features which do not correspond to the timeline - and some which do not correspond at all (last one being airborne ewoks).

the game has countless buggs which date from years back and are yet to be addressed (firing through walls, rubberbanding, and others).

To the OP: true SW fans will be giving SW:TOR a shot because it seems to be consistent with the SW lore - unlike SWG. Additionaly, its not run by ego-centric noob devs which do as they please and seldom get it right. Those who will remain will be the die hard nge fanbots which of course will leave as well once they realise they are playing alone. if tor releases end of this year, swg will probably not be around much later than the first few months of 2010.

That's a tough question to answer right now, but when Smedley says something like "sunset" about SWG's future, you kinda get a hint to what SOE will end up doing in a few years. As someone else said, SWTOR will determain SWG's fate.

Truer words have never been spoken. They tried to copy WOW and couldn't even get that right. WOW is more fun and less buggy than SWG is at the moment. If they had left the game alone and taken care of the bugs and lag I'd still be playing it. But no, they had to screw it up by chasing WOW subscriptions. SOE deserves to be forever shunned from the MMO world. No self respecting owner of a popular franchise should ever THINK of giving these clowns control over their IP again. I hope TOR is successful and has so many subscribers that Lucasarts gets embarrassed and closes this embarassment of a failure.

For those that play SWG regularly, we're all seeing more players than ever taking part in SWG with new, returning and active players enjoying the game immensely.

Even the "Transfer from" servers are starting to rebuild their communities, it may take the best part of this year but if the last month is anything to go by, these passionate communites on servers like Infinity and Scylla will continue to grow over the coming year and once again be attractive to players looking for large populations.

The subscription numbers you quote are plucked out of thin air, it coulds equally be said that SWG currently retains more subscriptions and makes more money now than it ever has over the years which today means that SWG is a tremendous success relative to it's dismal beginnings and will long continue to be a hit in the MMORPG industry.

Now is a great time to join or return to SWG!

I have and other than a few of the transfer to server the remainder are dead and dying.

The server merges/transfers are a success in that they gave the players the chance to consolidate and a few of the servers now have life.  This is a good thing but it did come at the expense of other servers.

I would not however call the need to having to consolidate a ton of servers to just a few a successful MMO.  Keep in mind they do not actively market this game outside of veteran trials so brand new players are few and far between.  But you knew that.

I don't have an issue with your enthusiasm for the game but please don't misrepresent it.  You do a dis-service to the people you are enticing to play the game.

    I concur with Valeran.

But also I must point out that  in the past some people would request proof that subs were declining when such assertions were made. I have to ask BadgerSmacker for the same proof that subs are increasing, otherwise it's just speculation - as was so frequently pointed out before.

More players than ever?  Really?  You're either delusional or have absolutely no ethics to so blatantly lie like this.

Show me the proof that they've lost 300k subscriptions and currently only has 10k-15k.  It's just speculation as well.  SOE doesn't release numbers and all the various methods people have tried to "prove" their arguments about population are completely flawed.

From my personal experience, I can say that subscriptions are increasing simply because I've encountered many people coming back and some just starting out as well.  I wouldn't venture to guess the total numbers across the game, but it is happening.  I won't argue that the transfer from servers aren't dead, because they really are despite a few pockets of rebuilding.  On Starsider I've encountered more people than I've seen in-game since launch regardless of what time I log in, though.

So not every server is bursting with people, but that doesn't mean the game sucks or there's only a handful of people playing.

I've never made the assertion that SWG lost 300K subs and they currently have 10-15K remaining so I'm not sure why you're asking me to prove it.

However I can say that I'm fairly certain I remember an announcement early on in '03 that SoE claimed they had 350K subs for SWG. I'm trying to find that announcement but I think it was all deleted long ago.

If I had it to guess, I would bet it will be around for another year or so.  SWTOR won't be out for a while, and even when it does release, SWG may still peter along.  While they're from the same IP, the two will be very different games.

I wouldn't count on too much content in the future, though.  Subs will keep falling, and they'll keep trimming down the staff to compensate.

How long it remains open will probably depend on how long it is til' their IP license has to be renewed.

Thier are no plans to shut down the game, the new one is years away, anyone that knows how long it can take to make a game can see they are at least 2 years away from beta.    The population has always been sharded, each server can only handle up to 3000 people, back during Pre-cu and today.      Thier are 10 transfer to servers that are doing great, and a few that are over stuffed.    Starsider is having difficultys due to, too many logged on, at least a few thousand even on at night, with it being at very heavy status during the day.

People that post its dead are the sad few  that cling to the old game like it was the next coming of Christ.   I have been playing since start up and I can say each new stage of the game had plusses and minuses.     Wouldnt hurt to go back and try it yourself, I have never listened to self acclaimed critics ever.    Like movies thier are ones that you like that everyone gives a big thumbs down.

To the population question, since thier was only about 20-26 servers back then, their are still about that number today, half have been transfer too servers, and the activity on those 10 look just like it did during the old days.   Estimating population is all you will ever get from SOE, 350k peak, 250k right before the Nge, and now I would say guessing is that the population is around 70-110k.

I would not worry about this game ever shutting down, EQ1 is still up and running, plus their is still a Dev staff that are still making new improvements to the game.
