I see where you are coming from Mango, but I didn't find the combat system in AoC THAT much different than the other games out there.
You are probably not playing a melee dps class then, because it's almost not possible not to see a difference with the slow boring combat we have in western mmos.

No you don't understand. It not "mashing more buttons faster". It's your guy who attacks faster. He hits faster with his swords and the enemies health goes down faster (to compensate the enemies also hit harder in AoC).
I play with my mouse and keyboard.
And it works out like all of the other mmos for me: I move with my mouse + right click and my fingers are on 3 buttons (1-2-3 ; for advanced combos I sometimes also need q-e accessible with the same fingers without moving the hand), that's it. The skills I launch with my left mouse click. Absolutely NO DIFFERENCE and NO MORE buttons mashing than all of the other mmos I have played, and I have played many.
It's exactly the same mouse and hand/finger position I use in Lotro, Aoc, EQ2, Lineage 2, etc... So I really don't see what you are getting at.
No.. I DO understand. I had a Max level Melee toon in AoC... The "right, left, forward, right, back" button mashing combo combat system I DID NOT LIKE. There was absolutely NOTHING about it that was groundbreaking. Everyone said "oooh! it's not like WoW", but other than not having auto attack (a good thing btw), it was just like everything else to me. Yes, I killed faster. Big deal. I kill fast in most games on melee class. Yes, the blood splatters and the heads roll. It was cool the first 100 times I saw the SAME maneuver. BTW, when I was playing, the decapitaion annimations would lock you up while you were in combat so if you were fighting more than one and you crit the first mob the second would still be beating on you while you slow motion decapitated the first. Saw more than one die by that...
and yes, the voice acting pretty much disappeared after leaving Tortage. I don't think we even got voice acting when we met Conan for the first time.
They have added voice acting to many of the important quests between level 20-80 with the patches. It's still not complete, but its coming.
Exactly the same thing Funcom was saying 6 months ago...

Yet and all that time from then till now can be measured, that this is true. So your point is....? Is voice acting the be all and end all? In AoC we have some decent Bioware style cut scenes, ambient voice overs in places and some rather dodgy and excellent voices. Funcom said they will add in more, they did, they said they will again in the future, it will happen, focus is on other area's at the moment.

Ok nice, so you need to know that they have fixed your problem:
1. they have reduced the key sequences from 6 max to 3 max. Now you almost always use only 1 or 2 sequences and only sometimes 3 for some advanced comboes (really 90% of the time 1 attack is 1 key, and sometimes 2 for me - its very relaxed, no button mashing).
2. they have increased the combat speed compared to how it was. (your guy hits faster, and the mobs hit harder to compensate)

Two things. Based on your feedback is that FC have shortened Combo times and 2 the second part about decapitations is not a valid point anymore. As you know the good thing in AoC melee is that the weapon swing hits multiple targets in its Arc.

As I said in my post at the beginning. Grats to the OP who is enjoying, but Funcom WILL NEVER get another penny of my money and I am comfortable saying that I know MANY MANY others that feel exactly the same as I do, so even if it is fixed and even if they FINALLY do some of the things they promised at release, it won't matter, because WE AREN'T COMING BACK! EVER... EVER... NEVER EVER..
I started playing 3 days ago. The game runs smoothly most times and is good to visually stunning on the eyes. I like the combat...it does move faster than most mmos....I like it..but I don't find it "ground-breaking". The whole button-mashing argument is stale...I don't know how a game can help but be a "button masher" until input technology changes..because right now...with most mmo's ..a keyboard and mouse....in other words...a bunch of f@cking buttons...is what we have to work with. (IDK ...do some mmo's use joysticks?..even they usually have more than one button to mash).... The only concern...does the world open up considerably after Tortage,,,or does it continue to corral you to the different encounters. That's my only complaint right now...the invisible..and sometimes not-so-invisible walls. Overall I like the game very much..just want more open areas.
the OP was very vague in his post and makes me wonder if he even plays. not knowing what server you chose or what class you chose makes me wonder a bit. i quit playing in september after starting in open beta. been wondering if i should get back into it or not.
No he's legit. He was looking for a new game is another thread and decided on this one.

That's fine and thats your opinion and all is good there.
But it does seem that, well.. maybe it is human nature... Whenever, there are people coming back, or new people to the game who give feedback that has some form of mild positive connotations, it seems like those that left will interject with some old info. Then when propositioned always, always, fall back on the "well I am playing something else now".
It almost seems that some people have to confirm this in essence to justify that they left the first game. Don't get me wrong Greygon, it is not a dig, it is something more and more common I see on all parts of the boards here. Like I said maybe it is human nature. One does not want to admit they may have made a mistake and therefore reaffirms a new interest in the most positive light often with the backing of others, whether painting the picture of 12 million WoW subs can't be wrong or the thousands of people who left AoC can't be wrong, so there are lots there, and I will include myself in that "lot".
You see just as people can change, games can too, as was pointed out. Lots of times in this thread I might add in lots of area's.
It is often whether people can "get over themselves" to revisit old interests to see if there is any improvement is often a big step for courage.
And at the end of the day what counts is that people are happy. Happy pursuing new interests, revisiting old ones, or starting out afresh. Acknowledgement of having those interests which may of changed is good, as you never know where you may be missing out.

Tortage is the tutorial area, this is where you learn to play the game and this is why they funnel you to where you have to go.
At level 20 you leave that place and move to the mainland for some bigger and more open areas.
1. they have reduced the key sequences form 6 max to 3 max. Now you almost always use only 1 or 2 sequences and only sometimes 3 for some advanced comboes (really 90% of the time 1 attack is 1 key, and sometimes 2 for me - its very relaxed, no button mashing).
Right, but the question remains: Why have that procedure at all? And why for only certain classes?
Like so many aspects of AoC it simply doesn't make sense

I knew it was the starter area...and figured as much. Just wanted confirmation. Great and thanks ..looks like I'll be sticking around.

I would say that it is a question of balance in the overall big picture weighing everything up. Where one might be good in one area, may not be so in another. It is also a question of feedback and fine tuning. Why did they reduce the amount of key strokes? Simply because of player feedback which was a lot. It is also a case of company in tune with its playerbase here. Why does Lotro have combo's in an auto attack sequence for some classes and not others? AoC's balance is that in melee there is not auto attack "usual" types therefore something has to be different. In DF there are no combo's or auto attack but it inhibits the same set up without the combo's. FC tried a different approach with melee. With Casters you have the same sequence with Spellweaving which is very useful but has it's drawbacks.
What is good is that there are always fine tuning happening. As the majority of some subscribers polled, which form a large portion of said feedback, is that nearly all classes are deemed balanced as a whole and makes sense to those playing the game.

Why have the procedure of having to hit the correct buttons in order to land a combo? Because it is more engaging than pressing one button, and in PvP one needs to have a cool head and not buttonmash, as those are the ones ending up on the ressurection pad. Too bad all the mages have to do in PvP is master the wsad buttons.
I guess the reason for spellcasters not having to do that process is simply because Funcom didn't have enough time to make an equally balanced and engaging way of fighting. The spellweaving was supposed to be the mages big attraction, but it was sadly not what people hoped for.
I guess people who like traditional MMO fighting styles would prefer to play a mage.
Fighting melee vs melee characters after the combat revamp is extremely fun though. I cannot think of one match in my 2 years of WoW that has come close to the ones I frequently have in AoC.

Why? I remember some pre-launch or launch interviews where Funcom said that they wanted to try some innovations instead of coping all of the other mmos. As with every innovation it was a risk, but I think it was worthwhile, especially since they have now simplified it.
As a whole it is not very much different from the other games so everyone can still fell at home. As I am playing several mmos, often 2 at a time and playing them on and off I enjoy the small differences it brings to the game play. It makes it something different from the "same" grind everywhere.

I think what he's saying is the game STILL isnt complete. Im no expert on mmo programing but I would think voice overs would be on the simple side of getting the game ready for release.
One of the best things about AoC are the fatalities imo but just because they added a new area doesnt mean that its not a grindfest. Tortage is the best thing about AoC. The farther you get in leveling the worse it gets.
For those of you playing AoC I hope you enjoy it while it lasts.

Because so many other MMO's have all spoken dialogue...oh wait...no they don't. Get with the program. The intro area was just that, it was meant to be an introduction, and before launch was 100% solo. They decided to work it out to multiplay. As well, they kept those VO's. But, then added more for longer storylines or for crucial bits of the game. I mean after a while, VO's get old anyways. This does not mean the game is incomplete NOW! It basically is as complete as most MMO's are...i.e: Never complete and always being worked on.
One of the best things about AoC are the fatalities imo but just because they added a new area doesnt mean that its not a grindfest. Tortage is the best thing about AoC. The farther you get in leveling the worse it gets.
And this is based on? 3 Months ago? 6? Launch? This actually sounds like more of a personal issue. I like Tortage, but it is far from my favorite area now. Several of the key dungeons are a blast. certain zones (like Ymirs) are awesome fun.
But, a person has to play the game to know this.
Also, the "grind" is not unlike any other MMO, so this is a non-issue as well. If this is an issue to you, just play another game and then discuss it on those boards.
For those of you playing AoC I hope you enjoy it while it lasts.
Right, but the question remains: Why have that procedure at all? And why for only certain classes?
Like so many aspects of AoC it simply doesn't make sense
The combo system probably started with an idea similar to fighting games. A combination of key presses resulting in a special attack. but then they decided that might be too tricky, so to simplify, you first click the "i'm going to do this combo now" button. That makes the whole thing wierd, because yeah, if you have that combo button, why not just make it do the combo.
Imagine if using the combination of swings automatically yielded a combo, without telling it which combo you were going for. Would make it more interesting, it'd make more sense, but it might be too consolish for a lot of people. So the way they have it is a compromise, I guess.
As for why spellcasters don't even have combos, though? No clue. That just seems stupid to me.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
I'm not sure what people feel is so extraordinary about AoC combat?
Yeah the fatalities look cool (at first)..but that isn't what I consider to be the definitive feature when looking at combat. If we are talking about the "Dance Dance, Revolution" style key pressing for melee---It makes no sense in a MMORPG at all, and the thing that makes even less sense about it; is that it only applies to melee. If you roll a spell caster then the combat is the same as any other MMORPG. Yeah there is spell weaving....but that's virtually useless, I mean it looks good, but it has zero functionality.
Looks good, but useless.....I believe we have discovered the foundation on which "the house of AoC" was built.
Eureka!
Yeah... I mean, what's the point in all these games where you press buttons in order to make your character do stuff? It's just appalling if you ask me.
Until they make games where you actually have to stab somebody with a falchion in order to make your game character do it, count me out!
Great.. another positive review by a guy who is level 9?! Give me a brea... KICK YOUR FUCKING ASS! THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?! ARE YOU PROFESSIONAL OR NOT!? NOOOOO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DON'T SHUT ME UP! DO YOU WANT ME TO TRASH YOUR FUCKING LIGHTS!? Hey OP, come back when you get to the endgame. THEN you will see why 90% of players quit Age of Conan. Meanwhile.. enjoy your Tortage.
I agree, but temptation is a cruel mistress.
"The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands, To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming! On we sweep with threshing oar, our only goal will be the western shore."
I think what he's saying is the game STILL isnt complete. Im no expert on mmo programing but I would think voice overs would be on the simple side of getting the game ready for release.
Problem with voiceovers is that they are very expensive to produce. And if you want to change the dialogue later, you are pretty much screwed.
The fact is Funcom ran out of time and money. THAT is why Tortage was (and still is) the only polished part of AoC and has voiceovers.
Rest of the game is unfinished plain and simple. I personally believe they launched about 2 years too early and I'm sure most of the Funcom staff agree.
I have to agree that this is by far graphically and lore wise one of the best mmorpgs I've played. I originally couldn't play AoC when it released because my old computer couldn't handle it, I was glad of that fact once all the negative feedback came in after release. I've since got a new computer and a month ago I saw AoC for £9, I figured it was worth giving it a try for that price. I've not regretted it!
I've levelled a Barbarian to 49 on Fury PVP server so far and I'm still having loads of fun, probably more so then I had in Tortage. I can crank the graphics to full and it looks amazing, the quests are fun and immersive, the music is awesome, the fatalities still havent got old, and the constant having to look over your back on a PVP server only adds to the fun.
The complaints I have so far probably only apply to PVP servers. The cutscenes for quests - I have to click through them insanely fast without reading them if I'm in a busy quest area, getting attacked when your stuck in one and trying to press esc is annoying. But it did bring about a great moment - being attacked by an assassin, hammering on esc to get out the cutscene and turning in time to stun him and get a fatality that hacks off his arms and head was too satisfying! He ran from me everytime he saw me after that.
The biggest annoyance though is the criminal/murder system, it's more then infuriating having a group of players 10+ levels below attacking me and I can't do crap about it because theres always one who jumps into your splash damage if you fight back, and somehow your the murderer for that. Its turned the ganking around completely, getting tracked and unstealthed by a Ranger 15 levels below you (who always comes with a group) isn't fun! But I'm pretty sure that can be fixed easily with a bit tweeking.
I might change my mind as I level higher, I might get bored eventually but thats always the case with most games, but for now I'm enjoying it. Alot of old players may be posting negatively about the game but I'm guessing quite a number of them haven't played since months after release or its just not the game for them. For anyone considering playing AoC its worth a try, find out for yourself rather then reading all the negativity still around.

In AoC we have some decent Bioware style cut scenes, ambient voice overs in places and some rather dodgy and excellent voices. Funcom said they will add in more, they did, they said they will again in the future, it will happen, focus is on other area's at the moment.
I am... I am focusing on other games... LMAO
No he's legit. He was looking for a new game is another thread and decided on this one.

Hello my old friend.
They have added voice acting to many of the important quests between level 20-80 with the patches. It's still not complete, but its coming.

It is preferable not to travel with a dead man.

Ok...sure will. Thank you for your concern.
Great.. another positive review by a guy who is level 9?! Give me a break.
Hey OP, come back when you get to the endgame. THEN you will see why 90% of players quit Age of Conan. Meanwhile.. enjoy your Tortage.
I agree, but temptation is a cruel mistress.
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
On we sweep with threshing oar, our only goal will be the western shore."
