Id go with EQ2 the content is just so great. I started on  EQ1 so I am not a blind WOW fanboy like ANOTHER poster here so I understand that you could possibly (gasp) get bored with WOW. If you are looking for a solid game with more content than you can probably see Eq2 also your question about level 47. I think you will find than you are just getting to the real good parts of eq2.

EQ2 housing vs LotRO housing: I confess, I was focussed more on gameplay usefulness than appearance/decor.

EQ2 has FAR superior visual housing, but I never found it to be useful in any game terms - that may have changed as I haven't played in well over a year.

LotRO housing gives you a teleport to the housing area (near major hubs mostly), house vaults for item storage, reasonably convenient basic vendors and bankers in housing zone. With EQ2, my house was gorgeous, but getting to and from it was a chore of city navigation and it had no real use for me.

Why would you play those 4 combined if by combining them you only get 20% options of World of Warcraft already offers???
Arena? Destructable Keeps and massively 200/200 battles every day on very server? Daily open world PvP quests? Best PVE in the world? Phasing (world changes to what you do in that world)? FLYING mounts, from helicopters, motorcycles, underwater worlds.
Dual specs? Classes that can be full tanks, full healers, full DPS.
    The end result is .... F A C T S
    Let's see: 250K + 100K + 200K + 120 K < 5.000.000 WESTERN based subscribers.
So In the end I would have to say: they ALL combined represent 12% of WOW in the western world.
So in the end people only PAY for the game that is miles above the competition.
Why paying for a new wold, if others offer FAR less individually.---> Boring.
And it ALL starts with the animation and .... ends with the animation.
    :)))

So Here is some GOOD advice:
Stay away from Fantasy MMORPG's, because you played the best fantasy there is developped (and costed 10 times more to develop than others btw).
Go for something completely different: EVE - Pirates of the Burning Sea etc ...Science fiction.....
The advantage will be that you won't compare and will be far less bored after 2 months....

The most ridiculous post I have ever read.  Where do you come up with 20% less options from?  Have you played them all?

There is no basis for your arguement and as I've said before, just because something is popular doesn't mean it's better.

Coming from WOW I would say you should either try EQ2 or LOTRO, both are very solid games.

WAR is just getting boring very quick, unless you are a real PVP geek. Even then, I heard from a lot of DAOC fans that there is better PVP. It just is the worst of these four IMO. The novelty wears off after 2-3 weeks and beyond level 20 its practically all the same.

AoC isnt a bad game in itself, but I always felt the world is small in every aspect. Only to be recommended when you really love that barbarian Conan theme.

EQ2 is huge, and I played it for 4+ years until I just had seen it enough. It is something to stay in, but nothing for the infrequent player. You really have to dedicate yourself to this game, find a good guild and get into a network of players. The good quests are practically 90% group quests, solo quests are mostly trash, today as once. Just IMO. Since levelling is considerably slower as in WOW, you really need a community of friends, a guild where people get to know you, and you have to be willing to plan ahead, since the best quests are all made of many steps and sub-steps. IF you are in for a big commitment, you get more out of EQ2 than of any other MMO.

If that sounds too demanding play LOTRO. It doesnt have the depth and complexity by far, but you can always make a break and play good solo stuff and with pickup groups since the quests are much less complicated. LOTRO has also very good story quests and you get more the feeling to be in some ongoing story/event than in EQ2, so if story is of greater importance, you should try that. The downside is, it has only 4 playable races, all humanoids, so nothing fancy. Also in terms of mobs and places EQ2 is more diverse.

So depending on your preferrences I'd recommend EQ2 or LOTRO.

Having played all those games, i would say that each one has something new to offer to your mmorpg game history, all but WaR. I mean, war is somehow like a bad copy of WoW, it has new features, but it's not what you are looking for if you have been playing WoW so far...

LoTRO has great historyline, good gameplay, but the lacking of pvp is something you will notice as lack of content when you reach max level. Great raids, great pve, but .. you will only like this proving that you dont care about pvp.

AoC, fucking great historyline ;), awesome gameplay, awesome pvp (rolling heads) where epic items dont make the difference between life and death, pve is nice too, and the new expansion will come soon in xmas. If you want something new just try AoC, youll love it if you dont mind playing a full-instanced game.

So yes, im a mmorpg veteran player, and i have been playing AoC for 2 months, so for that time i would highly recommend it.

What an amazing proof of complete idiocy there Zorn. By your "logic" simply because McDonalds does more business than say the Mesa Grill, Bobby Flay is a bad chef. Or perhaps that because McDonalds does more business, no one should ever stop at Taco Bell...it is complete nonsense.

WoW managed to grow the US/Euro player base for MMOs in an amazing fashion and did so with some very good marketing, advertising and design. That doesn't make it the game for everyone or the only option out there. They have a damn good dev team that has done an amazing job of stealing the best ideas from other games and polishing them as well as innovating some new ideas themselves.

But, no matter how many times you (or anyone else) screams "WoW-clone" or tries to claim that WoW did everything first and/or best, the games have significant differences which *gasp* will make them appeal to different audiences. WoW has its strengths and can be a fun game, but there are lots of reasons someone might prefer another of the current fantasy MMOs over it, or feel that another game offers them a new angle to explore.

I'm playing WAR in a PvE perspective, and I'm having loads of fun. I can't really decide on a main, so I play all careers I find interessting. Leveling 20 chars up at once is hard work.. But I learn the quests well, and PQ is a revolution to the PvE aspective. Now that the servers are merging, there's a lot of players all around me. But getting in a guild is a must in this game, changes everything.

I do play scenarios and oRvR, but mainly PQing and questing. But you need to not rush. Take time, look at the graphics(which I enjoy much more than the AoC one), try to have fun, and the game will last every rank ;)

I currently have LOTRO subscription on as well, to try it again. And I like that very well too. But WAR wins imo. EQ2 I never tried. But I saw a friend of mine playing, and I didn't like the graphics, looks cheap to me. Mabby it was his settings, I dunno.

WAR - Feels souless and generic : The PVE lacks and the combat isn't fun to make the PVP good.

EQ2 - Has some good PVE content but ruined by low pops and zoning and the lack of good PVP and poor combat ruins it.

AoC - I didn't get far in the game but from what I played I just had no interest in the setting and all the zoning is annoying.

Lotro - The combat is the worst of the 4 and the chaarcter models suck and the PVP is lacking and I hate zoning into buildings

I choose none of them because they are all rather poor and annoying to play.

  • openedge1openedge1 Member Posts: 2,582

    My ratings are

    AoC - 8

    EQ2 - 7

    WAR - 3

    LOTRO - 1

Recent revamps in AoC have made the game exciting to play and looks and sounds great, Content is getting there, and the classes feel more unique than most

EQ2 really kept me going for a long time, but the crafting does get a bit tedious, but you need to do it to keep yourself in the goods you want as buying on their AH is a bit pricey...but leveling is fast and combat is good.

WAR just annoyed thanks to it's WoW visuals (please dont give me the WAR came first crud...it did not mean they had to copy WOW UI also...) and empty areas in early levels make it hard to level (even with the trial), and the PvE is pretty bad.

LOTRO has so much wrong with it, from ugly characters to a bad UI, hitching gameplay, animations that look awful, and really, all you are doing is picking up the pieces after the main characters of the story. Been there done that feel to the story...I mean we read the books and watched the movie...do we need to play that same bit over again?

    Good luck

Can you elaborate in a rational way about the "poor combat"?

The combat in EQ2 is more dynamic than most games at its time, including WoW.

Group combat has more possibilities and is more challenging than most games at its time, including WoW.

Raid combat is far more deep and hard than WoW.

If you compare EQ2 combat with WoW combat, EQ2 combat wins in animations, spell effects, dynamic, strategy, amount of character skills and uniqueness of skills.

Some servers are so full of people it is almost unbereable.

Good PVP is a matter of opinion.

AoC also has some nice combat ideas that can improve to a great combat experience.

Ok I found all the EQ2 classes to be watered down and very bland and boring to play. I spent most my time looking for a class and never finding one I liked and I just went with a Shadow Knight hoping things would pick up. However the combat had this dumb autofacing I hate and I just found it to be rather static, slow and dull and I didn't think the animations were good or the spell effects for that matter. It's all also let down by the terrilbe armour and character models which are so ugly, well all apart from the Rats and Lizard Men. Nothing was memorable and it was just really Average to poor with nothing I liked about it. I found myself hitting the same 3 skills over and over again cause I worked out they are all I need to kill groups of mobs and keep my health up.

I never mentioned WoW but in terms of classes, Art, character models, animations, spell effects, combat and PVP then WoW is light years ahead and much more fun. WoW has 9 or is it 10 now? Fun classes where as EQ2 doesn't have any and on top of that each class can do so many kool things and play 3 different roles, where as in EQ2 you play one. The Druid in WoW is just so amazing. The combat is just fast and fluid and theres no auto facing and it just works so well and it's something no other mmorpg has come close to. Just a shame I got bored of that style of mmorpg years and years ago.

That is funny, because in my opinion, classes in WoW are nothing more than the most cliche RPG classes you can have.

Now it is a bit better with the DK, but unfortunatelly, WoW DK for me is just a watered down version of Everquest 2 Shadow Knight.

Auto facing is an option, you can have it or not.

Usually combat in EQ2 is faster than WoW (this is not an opinion, but the rational truth), but encounters are a bit harder.

I found the Druid in WoW very boring and a pale shade comparing with the Fury in EQ2, the Druid in VG and the BS in AOC.

But Im glad WoW has now at least ONE exotic class, the DK, as I said, it is not as deep and interesting as the Shadow Knight, but at least it is more than the classic and boring  warrior, rogue etc.

WoW animations are simpler and much less developed than Everquest 2 animations (this is not just an opinion, just the fact of ring versus mc).

This is an old, low quality EQ2 video (before any expansion and in lower settings), you can see a fact here, Everquest 2 has the better animation of all MMOs of its time, now only riveled by AOC

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Nbm-d3LuCg  keep in mind, low quality and even low settings, but you can see some of the monk animations.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_y79Tzzjvl8 a bit of EQ2 mounts and its animations

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbM5hY5t1w4 a bit of combat animations

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsRqtJiehrQ&NR=1 a newer video with some updated weapons.

I dont have anything against the fact you have more fun with WoW, WoW will be more fun for some and EQ2 will be more fun than others, but your arguments are not rational and not realistic.

Maybe the fact you really enjoy WoW just made you blind about some details in games you dont play/enjoy, like the complex EQ2 animation.

Most of EQ2 classes can play more than one or two roles , just like WoW classes and they are a bit deeper in group performance and character skills.

Anyway, I think the OP already know WoW.

"WoW is light years ahead " What you said here is a clear example of your irrational arguments to express just your taste, lets try to be at least a bit informative, some folks just want real information about games, I know opinions are part of this, as I expressed a lot of personal opinions about classes here (and said they are my opinions), but it seems you just see some of your exaggerations as real information, "light years ahead" is not even a real parameter outside a childish conversation :)

The multiple roles of classes in EQ2 is not an opinion btw, it is a reality, you can have scout tanks, healers dpsers, tanks dpsers healers etc etc etc

To say that animations and spell effects in EQ2 are not as good as WoW is ridiculous. EQ2 has some of the best animation and spell effects in any game I have ever played. Most who complain about that probably do not realize there are settings that effect these. First you have to have the animation slider maxed. You also have to have your particle effects maxed as well. If you got a box that can handle this with EQ2 the animationa and effects are fantastic. Most people criticize this do so out of ignorance. I started a thread here to help with the overly complex graphic settings in EQ2. EQ2 is still one of the best looking mmos out even after 4+ years.

    Yep Eq2 looks great.

Eccoton you're getting alot of haters in this thread. Just read some of these posts.

Lotro getting a 1 rating? and EQ2 having terrible graphics and combat?

One would have to think the only game these guys played Was WoW.

They only want that Quick FPS movement macro spam combat WoW offers, when a game tones the combat down to a slower pace they call it shit. Mmo combat is supposed to be about spell usage and countering not who can strafe the best while spamming macros.

Also any game that has realistic graphics most WoW players will freaking hate.

Out of these 4, I currently prefer AoC, because of the lovely grahpics and animation, the combat, the different take on the classes and the lore etc. Also looking forward to the guild wars (seige warfare).

I think the four games mentioned are very similar and none is really better than the other.

EQ2 and LotRO will no doubt have more content since they are older, I think you just need to find the one you most like and roll with it.

Vanguard Saga of Heroes is also worth a look , i think they are still running their free trial (10 days).

I dunno I just found WoW's animations to be very fluid and flawless and with the faster paced combat that's really amazing as it doesn't sacrifice gameplay for looks. Everquest 2 however does and everything feels slower and more clunky because of it. WoW also has much better spell effects that stand out and are more memorable so that you can tell what they are doing. Everything looks unique and great. With Everquest 2 again everything is just very bland and just looks really meh and nothing makes me love th elook of a class. Sure the particle effects are probably more advanced due to the engine but whocares? WoW's polish and art and Blizzards creativity is miles ahead of EQ2's bland generic world. Also most people would agree with me considering WoW is more popular and people I tried to get to play EQ2 with me all said it has crappy graphics. The character models put most people off th emost though, they are really bad and need a change. I asked for it in beta and threy made the Human females look even worse, like they were on crack or something and they havn't changed to this day.

Also the comment about WoW's classes be cliche fantasy classes...... whocares? Theres no bullshit and you know esactly what you wnt to pick because everything is obvious. In EQ2 theres far too many two sides of the same cpoin that have slight differences... it's like why don't they just merge them classes and have one super fun class? I hate the archetype system it ruined WAR aswel, you spend ages going through watered down classes and end up not liking any of them. With WoW every class could play 3 different roles and had so many fun spells and skills to play around with that you end up having a fave but like them all, theres not one unfun class. The Druid class is still the best out of any mmorpg cause of how diverse and fun it is with all it's forms. The horrible armour in EQ2 doesn't help make me like them too.

I disagree with everything you said except the Druid comment since their bad ass (loved my druid back then).

All this is your opinion really, tossing out a sub number as proof means nothing really.

I understand where you're coming from though, If I only played WoW 95% of the time I would think EQ2 was pretty bad also.

Once you get used to those stylized graphics and FPS combat its not easy to go with a slower paced/Auto face combat system like EQ2,Lotro or WAR.

    To each his own really.

Here are a few shots from EQ2. You can clearly see how inferior these graphics are to WOW.

  • djazzydjazzy Member Posts: 3,578

I often see people mistake graphics for art direction. Animation is also mixed into that conversation. WoW has poor graphics for today's standards but their art is top notch if you like that style (and a lot of people do). When one talks of animations and plays wow really look at them sometime. There aren't a whole lot of animations (basically 2 casting animations per race i.e.) but those animations are very smooth and very well done. Add the fps style of play to all of that and you get an appealing polished product. I have played WoW for a long time but I got tired of the repetitive play.

Out of the 4 games mentioned in this topic the game that hooked me the most was AoC. I quit playing last year due to not much content at the later stages of the game and also it seemed an empty world. LotRO is a solid game with a great main story but for some reason it didn't hook me in. I think part of it was because I was turned off by the animations and combat of your main avatar, it just wasn't smooth. I tried EQ2 for a month but it was a ghostland when I played, a real turn off. However, I loved the crafting system. WAR, I loved the pvp, the pve felt like a huge grind though (it may not have been but it just felt that way).

The game I would recommend is Guild Wars, I love the game. However, it is quite a bit different than the 5 games mentioned above (other than the Fantasy genre) so it might not be your cup of tea.

Too bad your framerate in those shots are gonna be around 20 FPS because EQ2 does not take advantage of today's hardware..

Nice try, but 99% of the time the EQ2 colors look like this....dull...dull....dull

Not to mention the "human" characters have their eyes too close together so they look cross eyed.

I am sorry but this is bad art direction. There is no two ways about it...

There is just nothing "interesting" about the art of EQ2. It is so bland.

It is almost as if there is a grey filter over everything..

Here is a typical shot of World of Warcraft. The world is alive with color! Beautiful art design..

Nice try, but 99% of the time the EQ2 colors look like this....dull...dull....dull

Nice try? You have no idea what you are talking about when it come to fps. Try going to the EQ2 forums here and read my sticky there on graphics and performance with EQ2. For your information I play on a 38 inch aquos monitor with near max graphics at 1920 x 1080 and those are game play screenshots. I get 50 to 90 fps and in raids I never go below 35 fps.

This is another example of someone speaking out of ignorance to make some weak point about WoW as if I have no clue. I played WoW for over 4 years you do not have to prove anything to me I like the WoW graphics. I think they are great.  Either you have a crap box or you do not understand the overly complex graphic setting in EQ2. There is nothing dull about eq2's graphics. However showing some empty rooms helped you make your point.

Here are a couple shot from one of my houses which is more typical of EQ2's look. I can also go to WoW and find boring images as well. You see I know this since I have played both games for over 4 years and only recently left WoW and not because of graphic but I simply got bored after 4 years in WoW. Here are also a few close ups. So you see I am not trying to fool anyone. I am trying to offer the truth about the graphics in EQ2 based on knowlege regarding graphic setting. Then people can make up their own minds. So I guess that is what you meant by nice try?
