Heh, this is why I always ask a player's age before they try to friend me.
I ran 3 heroics one night with a PUG group, and they were really good, and we got lots of badges and rep. We all friended each other, and I guess one of the players was a 16 year old.
I get a tell a week later from the player, asking "what's your business with my child," and "Who are you, where do you live, what do you do for a living." I thought at first the person was playing a joke, or drunk, but then I realized it was some zealot parent "protecting" their kid. I told the lady she could go play in traffic, and that her kid never told me their age, and that we just ran a few groups together. I even got the other players from the group involved, who were all 25-35 years old, and they thought it was ridiculous as well.
If you want to protect your kid from WoW, tell them they're not allowed to play, and to go mow the damn lawn and do their homework. That's what kids are supposed to do.
Science flies people to the moon. Religion flies people into buildings.
Sharing accounts is usually a violation of a MMOG's EULA. It also ruins the MMOG experience for other players if you share a character pretending to be that person. That in itself is very dishonest. I think you should keep up with the monitoring and key logging and parental software etc, but violating both established and implied rules is not a good example for you to teach your child.
Ok, allowing my children to create a character off my account is a violation of a EULA? Really? Actually it isn't. Show me where in an EULA does it say you cannot allow people in your household to play off your account.
As for me pretending to be that person, I am monitoring the actions of MY CHILDREN on MY ACCOUNT. I go in, I read any tells sent to their characters, any in game emails, and I will respond if someone sends a tell. Perhaps it is dishonest, but so are the freaks who are 45 pretending to be teens while preying on the innocence of children. I can live with my dishonesty. Also, do not try to lecture me on being a good example for my children. Nothing I have done violates estabolished rules, and I really could care less if I break the implied rule of pretending to be one of my children. If it prevents them from being harmed, I will do it.
Fully agree. Blizzard's EULA is nothing compared to the safety of one's children.
However, they shouldn't even be playing a time sink game like WoW at that age. When I was 13, my parents severely limited my game time, although at that time it was Nintendo, and you couldn't meet creeps online. But When I was 15, 16 and such, we got our first computer, and they closely monitored my online time. And even back then we encountered our share of creeps on the internet.
A 13 year old should be concentrating on school, activities/sports, and making friends (non digital ones). WoW, like Cigarettes and Alcohol, is something that should be used by an adult, through an adult's free will. It's a choice, for an adult to make. A child cannot comprehend the side effects of that kind of choice, just like beer or smoking. Sure it doesn't cause cancer, or put you at risk for a DUI, but we've all seen the effects of an unhealthy addiction to WoW. Now understandably you're patrolling your child, and they don't really have a job to lose.. so it might be a bit different, but it's still an anti-social activity at an age where social proficiency is one of the major stages of development.
While this guy is a total scumbag, and is 100% at fault for what could have been a very tragic story, all of this could have been prevented by parents being real parents and just saying "No, you're too young to play WoW, do your damn homework." This just furthers my belief that nobody under 21 should be playing MMORPGs.
Chamberlain, to a point I agree but to a point I do not. My children cannot play any games if their grades are sub par. They lose gaming rights if they do not complete all their homework for the week. All computer games are a privillege that they must earn. Their gaming time is restricted. They still socialize and have many friends. Gaming is not a bad thing at that age if it is controlled, monitored, and treated as a privillege, something that must be earned. Case in point, my gf's kids has had a completely torn up room, they lost the computer for a week. It is about moderation and sticking to your guns.
As for your last paragraph, no, this all couldnt have been prevented if the parent just said no to WoW. This girl could have played at a friend's house, where any type of monitoring might not be employed. The smarted thing is to monitor it in your home where you have control. The issue here is twofold. THe first being this guy is completely sick in the head. The second being the parent should have been monitoring her phone, email, IM, and game communications much more closely. She could have prevented it LONG before this girl went to the bus station. THat is the key. Know what they are doing, be involved, be educated.

Agreed on that point at least. Some people are so sick that the lengths they will go to are sometimes unstoppable.

To the OP I dont think using sexual predator's as a way to say your game is better than another is very smart,infact it is pretty much the lowest thing I can even think of.

I understand that you may be trying to protect your children but how about earning respect from them so they tell you if they have problems instead of hiding them from you out of fear. There are a lot of people in this forum talking about how they snoop around on their kids, what do you think they are doing to you and who do you think they learned it from?
A child's mind is a blank slate, what ends up inside is up to the parent.

I love how people say that. My kids would never do that. They are not that dumb. It can happen to them and they can do it. Every kid can make one mistake and all it ever takes is one mistake for something bad to happen. Honestly, the likelyhood of it happening is very very remote, but to deny it could ever happen to your kids is just being blind.
