As I started to think about this issue, I got puzzled why are you discussing this matter at all ?
1 Is it that you can't get over the fact that you won't be able to try EQ2 for free for an extra month or 2 ?
2. Is it that you feel so knowledged in the gaming industry that you feel that you and only you could make a diffrence in the development of EQ2..
Sorry people, this thread is rather meaningless, just check your mail or wait for the release...
I haven't even bothered to aply to the beta, because my feel towards betas is that they spoil the fun and exiting moment when you enter something completly new, and even if you think you are a person that fits in categorie nr 2, you still get spoiled of some fun and exitement, maybe you get a positive reaction or a negative, but you will most certainly deicide if you will be playing retail during your time inside the beta...
I didn't even aply the beta to AVOID the risk of getting in, if i did I woudn't be able to stand my curiosity and ofourse I would log on just to see what wonders SOE has created this time !!! And secondly I would have to log on to stand up to my part in the beta agreement..
I think people aren't really straight forward today, many claim they "test this game" to make an improvent, thats fine, but how many of you has "really" made a diffrence in any sort of beta, "hands up" ? part from being logged on to the game, and stressing the bandwidth that is !!
I can easily say that I didn't do anything, part from playing the game, well then many would counter and say, wow thats fine because then there were no bugs, and the dev's made an exellent job, yes maybe or maybe not, that would matter very little. I would still just play the game, maybe turn in a few bugs when I encounter them, and ofcourse that is what a betatester should do, you are not forced to do anything else !!
But my question is why are people so shy in admitting they wan't to play a couple of month's for free ? they are so hyped up and curious about a game, there is nothing wrong with this feeling, so why don't you just admit it ?
think you woul'd get banned from a board for saying so ?
think they would kick you out of the beta for saying so ? Well maybe, just to make a statement, but still very unlikely as they know this is the case for 80-90% of the testers
As for me, betas is "alittle like" openeing a christmas present a couple of days before christmas..
Yea well just my luck, when closed Beta applications were out I had a shitty comp.. Now that I have a beautiful one, theres no open Beta. Hurray for luck.

Well what if you posted like 50 bugs, and then they released the game without fixing any?
Cough*swg*cough then you'd have a cynical view towards betas especially towards ones run by SOE. We all know why they're going to keep the NDA in place till one week before retail. History has a way of repeating itself.
I still remain nueteral... I have not chosen EQ2 or WoW but i have a good feeling the open beta will lend me a hand in making that disition . However I still really remain open to EQ2. However, there has been something that has been repeated over and over, but people dont seem to know the whole side of the story.
Ive been itchen to say this for a long time... Sony is an evil empire, ill hand that to u all. But does anyone out there know who owns Blizzard? Viacom! Now heres an evil corperation. Err Viacom doesn't own Blizzard. Blizzard is owned by Vivendi Universal , but your not far off it's a media giant that makes Viacom look like a 2 bit player. This year they gutted Sierra games closing down Impressions Studios and Papyrus Studios in the fallout. http://www.vivendiuniversal.com/
I think there isnt enough time. They want to release the same date as WoW I think. So they are just sticking with closed. Also maybe they want more experienced players and dont want to spoil the game???
I think they just want to get the game out by the time WoW is released, considering its gonna be a huge competition between the two in my opinion. Of course hand it to SoE to ruin a game for more money. EverQuest used to be so much better before Sony took over.

It made them a lot of money because unsuspecting gamers bought their broken unfinished products while they were under the impression that SOE had actually kept its promises and made a finished properly tested game. Only a company that has nothing to hide and actually wants and values player feedback will have an open beta. The Evil empire of Sony online cares nothing for the products they sell or the people who buy them. Only the easily led sheep will continue to follow SOE and spend their money foolishly only to be abused and neglected by the master they serve.
ROLEPLAYERS UNITE!!!!!
Bingo! he's right you know. It is exactly the same setup as SWG and his description on Sony Online is correct.
I'll be giving this game a try along with many others, even with the lack of PVP, but i'll not be buying at launch and i'll not be buying the collectors edition. Lets see how the forums look one it's live.
Love it or hate it at least you'll know, already know or at least be able to read what others know about WoW before you shell out your hard earned money.
Companies don't really matter, if you ask me. It's the people that matter. Vivendi could dissolve Blizzard or squeeze it out and the people would move on to greener pastures. The games would still come.
Sony squeezed out Brad and his crew when they took over Verant, so they moved on to form Sigil. Now Vanguard is looking to be one hot game, and will be the real sequel to EQ.
(my own personal obeservations / opinions, im sure there's plenty of people to argue against it) Opens Betas are...
1. usually done with games by companies that have never run online games before.
2. done on games that are extremely buggy aka WoW, read their boards there's like bug central going on over there. Class bugs, game mechanic bugs, graphic bugs, connection bugs, game mechanics not even implemented at all, all sorts of missing stuff that should be IN the beta or left out for further testing on a test server after the game goes lives, etc etc.
3. done in order to create huge buzz aka Lineage 2. EQ2 doesnt need that sort of buzz, they get tons of buzz and are giving away tons of Beta accounts all the time, that in itself and the secrecy of the game is general is creating more than enough. Plus they have an existing customer base from EQ1, alot of know people are going to switch or play both.
4. not done usually for testing servers, thats what Stress Test is for.
Knowing the kind of buzz they have, the people literally begging at their feet to get into the beta, the amount of time they spent selecting people just to Beta (that dont bitch n whine) they are more than set for their servers.
Everyones gonna go well what about what happened with Star Wars...talk to Lucas Arts about that. They are *techinically* the developers / handlers of everything that goes on with that, SOE is unfortantly for them just some lackies that get stuck with the bad buzz.
BTW...Just because there's an open beta doesn't mean their servers are properlly tested. There could be 30,000 people trying to log into a game for open beta, but alot of people Wait for the game to come out because they're usually a steady build and better servers. So somewhere to 100,000 people could log on then, that puny lil 20,000 to 30,000 just ment nothing.
OPEN BETA"S are for generating BUZZ, not for testing, although alot of patch work goes on due to people finding still existing bugs.
anyway thats just one woman' s opinion.
oh yea..SOE is far less evil than EA, who is pratically buying and attempting to own and kill ever game out there. They killed Ultima when they bought it. Its been nothing but a peice of crap game since they strangled it to death. And atleast SOE will hear you out on a geniune problem with their game.

Every game that comes out these days has a demo version that you can download. That helps you to decide if you want to buy it or not.
So not being able to try EQ2 sucks. But instead of admitting that you just try to make up reasons why its good that they won't have an open beta. How ridiculous!
WOW open beta starts in a few days, and if I like it I will buy the game.
If I know WOW is good and don't know if EQ2 is good, why would I buy EQ2?
So no its not "good" that they won't have an open beta.
1 - time - WoW is looking at open beta quickly - that has to be putting a lot of pressure on the devs from a market position standpoint
2 - EQ2 has been in beta for months - a lot longer than WoW
3 - they know you will buy it to try it anyway - and ANY MMo is in pay for play beta the first 6 months anyway - WoW EQ2 LII - doesn't matter - always bugs present at gold release.
4 - Its EQ2 - more hype and marketing than the last three summer blockbusters- why would SOE offer a 'demo' for a new product they are trying to make you purchase- on a conitual basis?
5- no matter what anyone says about WoW or EQ2 -- different products, appealing to different people..
now go enjoy the game you choose to play for YOUR reasons - not anyone elses

EQ2 Only started Beta back in June and even then it was a mere Friends and Family Beta. WoW on the other hand has been in Beta since March. WoW has also been in developement much longer than EQ2 (production began in 1999 but didn't go public until late 2000) hence why it's coming out before EQ2.

1) Explain please, SOE is known to rush products out before its mostly bugged free. PLaying WoW in Stress test I'd say it's ready, it just needs a little more balancing and added talents.
2)WoW started Beta before EQ2. Get your facts straight. WoW started March while EQ2 started June.
3)Yes all MMO's have bugs. There's a big difference if its a lot of bugs or a little, a huge game play hindering bug or a minor one. Also many people online and I know already said they will play WoW first because they can try it out on open beta. EQ fans will still buy EQ2 but the undecided is what open beta is marketed to.
4)Maybe because a demo has more exposure to gamers. And has the most effect on how people decide if they buy it or not.
5) Couldn't have said it better myself.
Seriously though. Even though Open beta is just a invitation for free loaders to play for free. It also helps gamers decide if the game is worth buying or not. You can't blame gamers for being cautious since their going to dish out 50 bucks for the game and pay a monthly fee. Open beta is not just a test to see how the servers will run. But as a marketing ploy to get people hooked. If a company truly made a great game and felt that if people played it for free and will buy it when its time to pay there's no reason not to have a open beta . Even if it's 2-3 days.

Why do people keep saying this? What MMOGs has SOE released? SWG and Planetside. Was the launch of Planetside so bad? SWG I will give you, but chalk it up as experience--plus they had to work with LucasArts on that one. What MMORPG has Blizzard released? What experience do they have? Battle Net?
As far as your points, several accounts of beta testers for both games have said that EQ2 is more ready than WoW. Not that it matters because an MMORPG is never finished. That's the beauty of it.
*highly agrees with aeric67* plus the fact WoW is still releasing game content...and its really peeving the mess out of its players. Im sure everyone Just Loves that their Items are literally worthless by the end of the day so they're forced to sit and repair stuff Everyday!! No one Saw that coming! They haven't even completed the classes for the game. EQ2 has been in Development ALOT longer than WoW if my memory serves me correct.
*goes on about some of the other posts*
Plus everyone complains about the SWG launch..HELLO!! SOE only runs the Servers..LucasArts is in charge of everything else!! the EQ launch..Um wasn't Everquest originally owned by someone else before SOE took over? Wouldn't that mean that EQ2 and Planetside are the only games UNDER them thats completely their dev teams work now?
It really helps when people have their facts / myths / rumors correct.

Yup Lucas Arts didn't have enough money for the servers so they asked SOE real nice like if they'd pony up the cash for em. Other than that LA created, developed, and generally did everything else is what you're saying, right?
Everquest was developed by Verant Interactive, and was published by Sony.
Lucas Arts had control of the IP on which SWG is based. They made sure that the game stayed true to the canon. They didn't program it. They didn't write the back end. They did nothing more than say yes, or no to design decisions as they effected the Star Wars lore. However, LA is sending in a 'Senior Executive Director' to basically take charge of SWG. There have also been rumors circulated that LA is not happy with how SOE has run things and will be divorcing themselves from SOE. The Smedley, of course, made a statement that everything was just lovey dovey.
That being said, I've begun to think it would be best if EQ2 released on the 15th of Nov. There are some people I'd be looking for to see if they really meant it when they said they'd play through the bugs, even when the bugs don't allow you to play through them. It might even be more fun than the game itself.
Oh, and since it's the cool thing to do... I have a friend in beta, and I got to see him play it and now the game just beams itself directly into your brain, so it's like virtual reality and stuff. And the game is the first ever piece of software to be 100% bug free. And they have now added negative ping code, so there is no lag. And there's fetuspaults. I heard it on the internet so it must be true. And WoW is just a hoax created by SOE haters to try and make people not buy EQ2, which will bring about the second coming of Jesus.

Hey Lugnard, didn't you get into the EQ2 beta recently? Thought I saw your name on another forum as a contest winner...
Please Refer to Doom Cat with all conspiracies & evil corporation complaints. He'll give you the simple explination of..WE"RE ALL DOOMED!
