zomg why so much hate, we get it, for the past 2 months you guys made it clear, DARKFALL SUCKS, it does have most of the features it promised, but they might as well not be there since they are implimented by absolute RETARDS. We get it, you guys have said it for 2 months. But there are good things about it dammit, I thought this was going to be the one positive DF thread in the entire mmorpg.com forums, until ppl came to start flame it again!
nothing is apparently going to change your totally wrong understanding of what 'sandbox' means. the fact is, you can be whatever you want in Darkfall, therefore it's sandbox. a warlock in WOW will always be a warlock.
DUH.
Hey bro.. you are on the tad ignorant side of this discussion. Because for your logic to work, you'd have to be able to be a Warlock in Darkfall. That is why the term "Sandbox" is a feature by feature princapals and the game mechanic cannot be restricted or limited in their value. Ccombat and the skill tree in darkfall is NIl compared to even thempark games.
Darkfall does not allow anyone to evolve into a Warlock, therefore it is more limiting. So far you have changed your modus operandi a few times. Perhaps you should let us in on YOUR definifintion. Since you are having an extremely hard time rebuttaling others with any sense of logic.
A sandbox game is not determined soely by whether or not it's skill based or classed based. Skill based games give a more "sandbox" feel, unless you dealing with the extremely limited abilities and skills. Did you intentionally miss the point about a lvl 5 Warrior in Everquest having more skills and abilities than anyone in Darkfall..?
If you cannot follow a topic and the valid points people make, then please don't pretent to be a cunning troll using some well thought out troll formula, but never base anything on logic. It just makes you look like a helpless fanboi, ranting!
I already gave up talking to Javac, I cannot reason with him no more.
A game is defined by the features it has, not by a label. Labels are just used to market crap, you call a bag "the latest technology in manually transporting minor daily-used devices". so what? Its still a bag. Javac appears to feel that calling a game sandbox makes it a better game than it actually is. Or he might personally suffer from the delusion that labelling DF sandbox makes DF the game of a lifetime.
Tomorrow, I will make a game named Sandbox, and sell it for $5million a box. In the box, you have a few sheets of blank paper and a pencil. The game is so sandbox, that you can have anything you want. Write down your wishes and mail it to me by throwing into the trash bin. I have the technology to retrieve it from your trash bin and will embark on a 8 year course of implementing the next patch for you. It does take 8 years to make the perfect Sandbox (trademarked) patch, like DF.
- You dont rely on NPC cities and Player Made cities can offer you a WIDE variety of things.
- Cities, or houses can be built anywhere by players.
- Player run economy. You are DEPENDANT on others for lots of stuff. You dont buy armors from NPC vendors but by actually contacting real players.
- Everything a player makes can be done many times better than what could ever be looted.
So far that pretty much sums up old SWG. I've heard DF does not have many of theese points, if thats true I would not call it a Sandbox game.
And NO I wouldn't call it a sandbox only cus you can "kill anyone you want" ... thats a different thing
$OE lies list http://www.rlmmo.com/viewtopic.php?t=424&start=0 " And I don't want to hear anything about "I don't believe in vampires" because *I* don't believe in vampires, but I believe in my own two eyes, and what *I* saw is ******* vampires! "
My sandbox criteria: - You dont rely on NPC cities and Player Made cities can offer you a WIDE variety of things. Player cities actually offer more leisures than NPC ones. For example you can't build a ship or a warhulk without the corresponding building that can only be built on player cities. Unless I'm mistaken there isn't a single feature available at NPC cities and unavailable at Player ones (well you could exclude the might of the zapping towers of NPC cities, player cities do have them but they are not as awesome). - Cities, or houses can be built anywhere by players. Darkfall doesn't have this and probably never will. Many players (including me) prefer it as it is actually. Nearly 100 of strategically placed city locations seem to be enough. I've never played SWG but I'm willing to bet that player chosen city locations would be detrimental to the game in comparison to it's philosophy. That doesn't mean that the ability to chose the location of the buildings within your city is a feature we wouldn't welcome. - Player run economy. You are DEPENDANT on others for lots of stuff. You dont buy armors from NPC vendors but by actually contacting real players. NPC vendors sell many things (too many imo), but nothing is more profitable to buy from or sell to an NPC. The exception of this rule is probably some materials that it might be hard to find a buyer for (and still he would pay more for them than the shop obviously), some materials (see cloth, leather) that are rather too rare to harvest so if you need large quantities you probably have to buy from a shop (player merchants are obviously cheaper) and most tools that cannot be crafted but can only be bought from an NPC vendor (blacksmith's hammers, fishing poles etc.) although you can find them in wilderness "Tool Boxes" and you can drop many of them at mobs. Also I'm excluding vendor food like the crappy weapons of starting mobs, I'm guessing even SWG had that. Anyone please correct me if I'm wrong. - Everything a player makes can be done many times better than what could ever be looted. There are a few weapons and sets of armor that cannot be crafted, and can only be dropped, but the above is true for two reasons. First of all, all siege equipment, as well as all top of the line types of armor and weapons can only be crafted by players. On top of that, player skill is an extra factor that benefits the efficiency of the crafted item. The better the skill the better the item, and obviously far superior than npc droped ones. So far that pretty much sums up old SWG. I've heard DF does not have many of theese points, if thats true I would not call it a Sandbox game. And NO I wouldn't call it a sandbox only cus you can "kill anyone you want" ... thats a different thing
I think Darkfall nails 3 (well maybe 2.5 ) of your criteria.

I would like to copy paste here a good post from forumfall that sums up what I think about sandbox MMORPGs.
Post by fariic: Apparently some people don't understand sandboxes. Cause this game isn't a sandbox.
Sandboxes give you no purpose.
The purpose of this game is clan warfare. Sandboxes give you play options outside of fighting.
This game does not.
You harvest to support crafters or to provide resources to build up a clan city/hamlet. Clan cities/ hamlets are there to be faught over.
Crafters make weapons, armor, enchants, pots and food. All of those things are there to support the people that fight. Darkfall has a LINEAR purpose.
You can't have a sandbox and then tell people, this is the reason to play.
A sandbox is about living a virtual life where you can be anything and do anything.
This is not the same as saying, you don't have to play the point of the game. It takes considerably more then a skill based leveling system for a game to be a sandbox. Darkfall is a classless, skill based, twitch pvp game; not a sandbox.
This^^
Darkfall is not any more a sandbox game than Vanguard is. Just because it has no classes, means nothing, if the skill tree is linear and myopic. If you look at every single Darkfall video, it's more than obvious that Darkfall's skill tree is indeed shallow and pethatic compared to many games Class based systems, that offer much more diversity in playstyle. (mage, priest, ranger, bard, paladin, sorcerer, conjurer, druid, necromancer, monk, illusionist, etc...)
Sandbox means diversity..!
Sadly enough, there is little (if any) diversity within Darkfall. There isn't even diversity within combat.. you have 3 basic attacks. I would say that Darkfall is the farthest thing from a Sanbox mmorpg that I have seen in many years. Because even in-game mechanics are shallow and bearly there.
The concept of Darkfall is pure sandbox, what your able to buy is World of Warcraft, minus everything but the battlegrounds.. remove magic and all other game features and just make one massive battleground and allow people to build a wall. Then tell others who are goign to buy the game, that a WALL is the most important thing in the game and you must take away other guilds walls..!
