Get a barebone system from ibuypower.com, get this cheap but very very good monitor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001317
You might want to consider getting a gaming mouse if you do not already have one, they make a world of difference compared to the normal junk mice.
I bought a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse combo for $109.
The mouse has 10 customizable buttons and the keyboard has like 18 customizable buttons.
I like the feel and customability of these but will an actual gaming mouse be better?
Gaming mice, such as the Razer Copper head and the Logictec G7, for example make a huge difference. They are much much more accurate, have adjustable speeds and basically give you faster and more satisfying response times. This is particularly useful if your monitor is decent sized and at a high resolution.
For mmorpgs I think hotkeys are better than having customizable buttons on a mouse or keyboard, especially when you consider your hand should or would be near WASD at all times.
I also like to have a couple hotkeys on my mouse too for easy access with my right hand.
Here is a quick part list i just threw together. You can tweak somethings. I really like the gtx260 for $179. You could get the Intel I7 for $100 more, but the 8400 is very nice overclocked to 3.66ghz+.

I built a new PC recently. It's really interesting and good to know all the different parts and how it all works. It also lets u know if ure PSU is powerful enough (with the NZXT tempest I had to upgrade to a 1000 watt psu). But yeah, ebuyer is a good place to get parts. I suggest getting a graphics card cooler or a good processor cooler too. This way you will get the best out of your system and I suggest if you don't already have it, that you get Crysis, as it's such an amazing game and really tests your system specs!
Do you run SLi or Crossfire?
if not; unless you have just a ton of fans and drives, I think 1kpsu might be overkill?
or its never a bad idea to have backup power for future upgrades?
It's not sli or cross! The NZXT Tempest (my case) has 6 fans plus there's a NZXT LX sentry.

Makes it look very nice in my opioin. Also the PSU was on offer for £80 at ebuyer!
Thanks for the list Cody
Well if you are looking to spend your whole budget, here's what I would build:
ASUS VH236H Black 23" 2ms(GTG) HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor $220 - Seems like a good enough monitor to me. BenQ and Samsung are supposed to be good as well I think, and I suspect this uses a Samsung panel.
OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ700MXSP 700W ATX12V $110 ($79 after MIR) combo with
OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 $75 ($48 after -$27 combo deal)
SAPPHIRE 100269OCSR Radeon HD 4890 1GB $265 ($245 after MIR) combo with
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit $100 ($75 after -$25 combo deal)
AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz $140 combo with
GIGABYTE GA-MA790XT-UD4P AM3 DDR3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard $140 ($120 after combo, $105 after MIR)
Seagate ST3640323AS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive $70
Case: Pick one you like, $40-$100
SAMSUNG Black 22X DVD+R $22 - pretty damn fast after applying firmware from here
The printer and speakers I'm going to steal from Cody's list
Canon PIXMA iP4600 2909B002 Up to 26 ppm 9600 x 2400 dpi InkJet Photo Color Printer - Retail
Item #: N82E16828102317
$79.99
Creative Inspire T3100 2.1 2-way Speakers - Retail
Item #: N82E16836116024
$49.99
Total (w/$60 case): $1261 before mail in rebates, $1196 after rebates.
First, some of the items I chose in particular because of the combo deals with them (memory and mobo, OC'd video card instead of normal clock) so you have to take into account the price after the deal - but they are all good parts.
What's different: This setup has a little slower CPU, but is triple core which matters in the few games that are optimized for more than 2 cores. With the cheaper CPU and motherboard you get a larger monitor and faster Radeon 4890 which is a very solid buy right now (alongside the 4850x2 - which may actually be slightly better). The GPU tends to matter more in games than the CPU as long as your CPU is fast enough to keep it busy enough.
You don't really need an aftermarket heatsink unless you plan on overclocking or your live someplace pretty hot - if you do get one I'd suggest the Zalman CNPS9900 for $60 or CNPS7700 for $35.
If you need this cheaper to cover shipping, you can get (in my order of preference) a $40 case to save $20, a 500gb HD for $20 less, a 600W power supply for $20 less, a Radeon 4870 or Geforce 260 216 for ~$60 less, or the 1 inch smaller monitor for $30 less. I put the monitor last because it should outlast everything else in your PC
Intel > Amd plain and simple and prices are great.
Having a $300 dollar videocard means nothing if you don't have a highly overclocked cpu.
Yes Intel processors are faster (and more expensive, especially when you add in the mobo cost for Intel platforms) than most AMD processors, but that is a benchmark you will only see when you run the game at 1024x768 or 1280x1024 for benchmarking purposes. When you actually put the resolution up to 1920x1080 you will see every one of these cpu's get the same FPS on a given video card unless you are using a $1500 multi-gpu video card solution.
You have to take into consideration real world usage, it's actually hard to find benchmarks that compare CPU's at real graphics settings, but take a look at guru3d.com because they usually benchmark CPU's at actual graphics settings.
www.guru3d.com/article/amd-phenom-ii-x4-810-and-x3-720be-review-am3/25
Here you will see the "slow" Phenom II 720BE on a GTX 280 ($350) actually get 2 fps more than an I7 920 and straight up match it in other benchmarks, all at half the price on the CPU alone not to mention how much cheaper AMD based mobo's are. The limiting factor is always the GPU at real resolutions and unless you set up a tri-sli 280 or 295 system that costs an insane amount of money then any modern CPU will power it fine.
You dont need to over clock your CPU, INTEL or AMD. In fact, I never recomend overclocking, its not even necessary any more since CPUs are much faster and cheaper. Overclocking can cause damages you dont want, and you have to make sure both your case, cooling system, and all are going to keep it at a safe temp.
"Having a $300 dollar videocard means nothing if you don't have a highly overclocked cpu." Is a false statement. A GPU will run fine regardless, and in fact is not reliant on a OCed cpu in this day and age. Furthermore, considering the rate at which PC gamers tend to upgrade and use their rigs, AMD is the best CPU. Its mobos and cpus are cheaper and over all more efficient.

I'm not so sure on the more efficient part anymore. Intel has stepped up quite a bit on making their CPUs more efficient, but I would have to agree. Over all AMD is the best CPU for gamming because gamers will have to upgrade their computer everyother year at the very least to be able to play the newest games at the desired FPS and graphic level, and going Intel would be very costly as was stated.
Also about overclocking your CPU. When you have 4 cores running at 2.0+ GHz there's really no need to overclock them...
I will also need to buy Windows Vista.
How much does that cost?
Well the cost of Vista's going to very depending on where you buy it and which one you buy but from newegg.com:
Home Basic (you should really try to avoid this one) - 89.99
Home Premium - 99.99
Business - 139.99
Ultimate (has the most features and is the one I would recommend if you know what you're doing with it) - 179.99 (the 64 bit version is actually listed as a dollar cheaper for some reason...)
These prices are as of this post and are subject to change...
Also these are OEM versions which means you just get the CD and key, no pretty box.
I might get in trouble for this, but i do not suggest buying Vista. IF you can download a thing called Vista Black... and wait till windows 7 comes out, purchase that one. Also its always a good idea to put Linux on your system as well, its free. Never hurts to have an alternate OS.
If you do that Sapphire Radeon 4890 combo deal it is comboed with Vista Home Premium 64 bit for $74 effectively, or Ultimate for something like $125 after the discount.
Vista has been fine since SP1 but if you can wait till Windows 7 comes out soon that'd be better, though I assume there is some Vista -> 7 value upgrade option.
Brit, do you live in the states?
Of course

lololol this is got to be the most garbage adivce i have seen in a min.....first of all what are you running for a PC ? and what has been your last 5 PC'S? (knowing im going to get a BS answer from you, cuase your full of it... and dont know what your talking about.)
IF you wanted to get down to brass tax the E8400 3.0 is the best chip on the market (bang for buck)...I run one on my wifes PC and it blows my cpu away. and im running A Q9450 OC @ 3.6.. At least untill the next gen games like ARMA 2 come out with Qcore support.
also the proof is in th PC and all its parts. In that Config you posted yea it beat it... in one game (or a few settings) by 2 or 3 frames...LOL
Know your shit before you spend someone elses money when you are clueless.
DONT BUY A AMD....until they can compete again...right now and for the last 2 years they cant. Take 5 mins on google and you will see this...Average all the AMD fanboy reviews to the Intel ones and you will see INTEL is the top of the line....
Price for performance.....once agian lol....you can get a E8400 3.0 that will OC to 4.0 on air for 150 usd...
also certian games run higher rez on certian Setups better (the game was optimized for that setup) . but you will notice that the Average setup Nvidia / Intel is what DEVs are tailoring to .
AMD AND ATI, i have used it and when i went Nvida, i never looked back....
Alittle Back ground on me.....
I upgrade my PC weekly... I buy all the best that can be bought. its a sickness...I constantly fiddle and tweek. I also run a Gaming website and have build countless PC'S for my clan mates ...I know the in and the out...DO not get your Facts form this website....Clueless.
You can pull Benchmarks out your ass all day..but until you have built one.... run one untill it broke.... then fixed it YOURSELF..... your OP dosnt count. Go head try me in a Tech battle.....

yea some of the AMD have good speed, but all around Intel is the chip that cant be beat. (And if you notice the E8400 is up there with all the qcores and its dual and not OC'ed)
I cant stand seeing people with one or 2 PCS under there belt giving out advice......thats his MONEY...you going to help him out if you recomend the worng shit? you will run and hide.

AMD is not even a close to a Intel now. its low end Dell, Alienware, Geeksquad, consumer crap. Just look it up... Second if you spend money on low end out dated parts. You will just have to upgrade sooner. Right now there is nothing that is coming out for the next year that will tax a system.
the computer below is a comp i have built 6 times in the last month for my clan.
all of these can be messed with give or take on you wallet

"Wrong it is quite easy to OC now. most Bios will let you do it with a few clicks...if you feel like paying twice as much for Hardware go ahead and listen to this guy. but with little or no effort you can make a 300 CPU a 1000 CPU and a 200 GPU a 300 GPU." Case and point i OC my Q9450 to 3.6 $300 to stomp out a QX9770 $1000 Cpu.. with a simple Upping of my FSB.

"wrong inorder to get higher frame rates out of your GPU you need A CPU with a high clock....other wise you can bottleneck your GPU... look things up before you post. I had to up my CPU to get the frames i needed with my GTX 285 for conan and Crysis. Massive diffrence..Say 25 frames.
end note...god are all MMO gamers clueless? from years of playing low end system taxing MMOS? i understand that most MMOS can run on a "Tandy 1000" but god...no wonder when a game comes out that taxes your systems you all cry that the game sucks....it really cause your pissed you can play it... on your Desktop paperweight.

Vista black....lol come on
first of all you can get Home 64 bit
you dont need black...its bloatware.
AND Windows 7 is coming in 2 to 7 month
its more stable than both XP and vista
Uses only 1 gig of ram and Supports the new DX10 and DX 11
DX9 is being phazed out as we speak
"Beauty is only is only skin deep..." said the AMD/ATI fan. "Blah..Thats just what ugly people say..." said the Intel/Nvidia fan. You want price / performance, use the dollar menu..
Well the cost of Vista's going to very depending on where you buy it and which one you buy but from newegg.com:

LOL you just admitted you dont even know what Vista Black edition is. From what I have read of your posts above, its all talk with a high and mighty attitude, but theres no real knowledge and or experience backing up your rants. AMD can and does compete quite well in the market as a matter of fact, furthermore, the best of the best is never needed for a hobby which is about constant upgrading over time. AMD holds up well, its priced much better and in the end are more efficient for gamers.
Well, when you order all your parts and assemble it all together, just make sure you GROUND yourself to something, because static electricity can be a PITA...I had to learn it the hard way when some of my hardware wasnt working, that is of course 8 years ago though.
