They have been advertising for years now that Darkfall is not for everyone ;they can't now complain about not receiving good reviews from large media like EG.

QFT.
You would think DFO fans would wear this as some sort of badge of honor.
"Hey, the mainstream doesn't like my game, we must doing something right! No carebears and WoW players here, woot!"
Instead:
"The mainstream doesn't like my game. That was not an unbiased review, he's a liar, I have logs, I can prove it..."
I could have spent 9 hours playing warhammer online and would have only experienced tier 1. Tier 1 was a blast. PVP was fun and I received these cool abilities. Now lets say I based my review on only my experience in tier 1. You think ANY warhammer player that progressed past tier 1 that read my review would have said "yea this guy knows what hes talking about?" I doubt it. These aren't single player console games. MMORPGs experience evolves and expands the more you progress.
Really, these aren't single player console games? I must be in the wrong forum...
Look, many MMORPGs evolve and expand the more you progress, I get, agree and understand that. Yet, if in the first 9 hours, the game has not done it's job, and the intial mechanics and gameplay haven't left me with that feeling of, "Well, that was fun and refreshing, what else is there to do, and what else can I experience?", then I am probably not going to continue on, and will probably not recommend the game to anyone.
Tier one was a blast in Warhammer, you progressed, and then what happened? How far did you make it before continuing on, and experiencing all the game has to experience? Heck, maybe you have. Maybe you are still playing? Then again, maybe not. Maybe you experienced something you didn't like, you found things to be not really to your liking, and maybe you quit before experiencing everything the game had to offer (all of the races/classes/zones/etc.). Maybe this has happened in other MMO's you have tried as well, maybe not, but then again, some people have a higher tolerance for things they don't like than do others.
The point being, there comes a time when people can only play/watch/read something they don't connect with for so long, before realizing it's not for them, and choose to move on. If he enjoyed the game, or found some spark that connected to him, then maybe he would have continued and seen the "diamond in the rough"...but obviously it didn't connect, and it doesn't connect with everyone. To my understanding, at least what I gather from the fanboys, Tasos and crew wanted a niche game. A game that would cater to the tastes of a small cross section of the gaming community, so honestly, bad reviews should come as no surprise, they are after all not out to please everyone, right? They should be happy with their niche, why should they care what a major website has to say about them? "Niche" games aren't meant to appeal to everyone.
He evolved and progressed as much as his tolerance would allow, and found the game lacking. His opinion. It is what it is.
The reason why I mentioned that these are not single player games but rather mmorpgs is because I noticed the common mistake that many review sites and companies make, and that is rating an mmorpg like they would a single player game.
But I will agree with what you said. People can only play/watch/read so much. Some people just cannot connect with something. BUT, they shouldn't be writing a review for said thing. I couldn't get past level 7 in final fantasy 11 and quit my first month. I talked about my early and limited experience but did not RATE the game based on my week of gameplay.
Honestly, this eurogamer reviewer isn't just an average mmorpg.com user who post his opinion, he is a reviewer for a major website. He needs to play the game to the fullest, because thats his task. If I was writing a book review, should I just base it on the first 100 pages...because thats all I could tolerate? I hope you can see my point and see why this eurogamer review is wrong and incomplete.
I haven't played Darkfall, and I don't like the fantasy genre. In my opinion, it doesn't matter who is lieing. The correspondent did a very bad job from the start. Allough's review policy: If its a niche game, play it from the angle its supposed to be approached, even if its the angle I don't like. Play the game for 30 days, at least 2 hours a day. Play at least 50% of that time with a guild. Be honest in every detail. ____ Otherwise its a bad review. ((The game I'm writing for right now? Its got bad graphics. But it was never built with people who like graphics in mind. It was built for people who like pen and paper RPG's. I'm a sucker for graphics, I love LOTRO, but I still give SQO a good rating because for its niche, you won't find another as good or even close.))
For a game that's supposedly sandbox and freedom personified, there sure seem to be a lot of people that state a specific way the game has to be played to get a feel for it...
Not trying to bash you bro, but different strokes for different folks. Besides, who is to say he felt he wasn't being honest? As for the length of time, etc...I wrote a response to someone else and am not going to rehash. You feel it was a bad review, others who played felt it was bad or spot on, and many are having fun watching the drama unfold. All opinion, one man's trash another man's treasure kind of stuff.
Now, as for SQO, where are you posting your review? Being serious here, I was toying around with the idea of trying it, would like to see your take.
I would give a low score to a company who for years made promises then not only fell short, but fell down face first resulting in a slow bleeding head wound. Tasos represents DFO, and hes represented it about as well as Michael Jackson represents the human race.
I like Michael Jackson =(
long as you are under 12, im sure the feeling is mutual. bam!
That aside, in response to another post. if a game doesnt grab you when you start playing, why should you spend hours trying to get the point where you can enjoy it?
If I spend 9 hours playing an MMO, and I dont like it, I certainly dont feel like continuing the torture.
Exactly.. like I said before I played Vanguard for 5 minutes before I uninstalled it..9/10 people agree that game is garbage. Just from the entire history the look of the game and lack of content and videos, I could play the game 3 1/2 minutes and give the same valid review.
As a player/consumer it's fine to make snap judgements like that but when writing a review you have to note the good and the bad. And the good and the bad has to be more than "The Good: I'm never playing it again, The Bad: I lost 3 1/2 minutes of my life".
Before you jumpto conclusion, offer proof that the reviewer only played for a few minutes. He claimed that he spent 9 hours in game.
Tasos is not a source of proof, more like counter proof.
The reason why I mentioned that these are not single player games but rather mmorpgs is because I noticed the common mistake that many review sites and companies make, and that is rating an mmorpg like they would a single player game. Look, I can understand where you are coming from, and what you are saying, but I still disagree, and still maintain my stance. It's a niche game, and it's not going to appeal to everyone, bad press should be expected.
People write what could be construed as half arsed reviews all the time, I mean, look at many of the oh so glowing reviews written by correspondents on this site, yeah, I know they aren't official writers, but I d@mn sure get my mmorpg e-mails telling me a new article is up. Shouldn't they be held to the same standards of unbiased reviews, instead of reviews written in the honeymoon phase, without truly playing the game, experiencing and evolving past the first few weeks or so?
First hundred pages of a book? Good writers know they have to grab their target audience in less than that, as many potential readers skim through the first few pages in the book store before buying (though some blindly do buy based on the cover).
I feel, that is if he indeed did play, that he told of the experience he had, and that was that the "book" did indeed fail to grab him in the first 100 pages. There was no added, "now, i didn't do this, but this sucks, and I didn't do this but this sucks." (or the stuff past the first hundred pages). He put forth and reviewed his experience. Just like many of the glowing "reviews" here for DFO I have received e-mails on, and you don't see me bashing them (well, except for the reviewer who claimed DFO was the most talked about MMO in the world or some such drivel due to the fact it was on this site).
Any further arguement than this, and we are just arguing semantics. You feel it was incomplete, I feel he played till he could stomach no more and wrote what he saw and experienced. We will have to agree to disagree.
Two more if you will...what if I get bad food at restaraunt, and get sick? Am I required to go back and try it again before telling people of my experience, or should the restaraunt have checked and properly prepared their food before serving it? What about people who write reviews for TV shows? Are they required to watch at least a season of a show before writing a review, since we all know TV shows can evolve over just a few episodes?
I haven't played Darkfall, and I don't like the fantasy genre. In my opinion, it doesn't matter who is lieing. The correspondent did a very bad job from the start. That just does not make sense.
You build a game that does not make sense except by playing thru a guild for 30 days at least 2 hours a day. And you call that entertainment? Sandbox? Freedom?
If the reviewer decided to try play in his own style and suffer, he has all the right to tell us that. We the readers will read it and interpret it in the light of our own gamestyle. Now if the reviewer only give 2/10 and without details, that is bad. He wrote a long page with details, and each of us has our own brains to see why he suggest 2/10.
Because the game is a niche game? Says who? The game was marketed for 8 years as the game that offers everything, in which u can pvp, pve, max freedom, meaningful crafting and what not. It is still so described on the official website. Now you call it a niche, not Tasos. Why should the reviewer accept your description and follow your way of gameplay. I never see that guild/30day/3hours a day being the officially prescribed only way to gameplay. Even if Tasos prescibe that, its not mandatory, its just plain STUPID.
I think Tasos is justifiedly angry it's like letting 7 year old review EVE or a 20 year old review a game targeted for 7 year old.
Point being reviews are written by players that have played other games like that previously - in this case UO, there is no other. Really stupid of Eurogamer even allow the publication of that crappy review, official apology is the least thing they should do and pull the review.
I would really like to see the guy review EVE actually...

EVE might be boring to some, but correct design decisions make it at least playable to all from the start. Darkfall fails to do even that.
And why is EVE the Holy Grail of MMOs? It is successful for the scope and intentions of the company behind it, but hardly representative of a large portion of the player base of MMOs.
Just because a game offers FFA PvP and full loot doesn't automatically set it apart from comparison to other games of the genre. After all, they are all judged under the MMO tag.

Why must the game be reviewed by someone who has UO background? Is the game requiring that background to sub and play? If not, then anyone is supposingly allowed to play, reviewing it exclusively from UO perspective is simply wrong.
On the other hand, there are enuf ex-UO player put off by this game. Imagining that an ex-UO player must give DFO a high rating is day dreaming. Serious UO vets might dismiss DFO right off the bat as a failed successor, 10+ years late and yet not up to standard.
All the player reviews and remarks have put alot of people off (like me). Then you have actuall reviewers from companies slagging it off as a complete pile of cack. Then you have the forums (again from unhappy players) giving some jist to what its like and that if you type anything at all bad about the game, your account will be immediatelly terminated without question (same thing with if they do not like a name) account terminated without question. Then there is also several in-game video's on youtube (have watched 4) and in all of them every single person making the vis has said that the game is absolutly boring and that they are hoping it picks up from level 20 (only 1 was 23 and was saying mid 30's that he was hoping it would pick up), the other 3 were lvl's 8, 12 and 15. Not to mention watching them play looked boring too, but hey, aint all games that you watch (without playing) look boring.
All these things have well and truly put me off regardless. The only way they would get me in there is a free trial, but hey, that aint going to be anytime in the next decade is it. They only have limited copies comming out (and in my opinion) those are to replace the terminated accounts thats happened so far.
All in all, i am more inclined to believe the eurogamer review than whatever tasos spit out of those holes (whether its down below or up above) take yer pick.
Tasos calling the reviewer out and having the logs to back it up makes me a little uncomfortable. But I think it's necessary to refute what appears to be a very poorly done job on the part of the reviewer.
A lot of people will read reviews and make up their minds based on what they have read. It was really irresponsible and unfair to spend so little time with the game knowing that ultimately this review could affect the bottom line.
That being said, I can usually tell if a game sucks or not in the first hour. But I"m not writing 'professional' reviews. For a professional the standard is a lot higher....you would think.
One thing is for sure.....Darkfall will get alot of attention : ) Tasos might not be as stupid as we want him to be.
Oh yeah, a lot of very negative attention.
If tasos wants that. He got it.
And that's exactly what he's gonna get !! Finally the crack in his ingenious marketing and promotional strategy of the game by not dropping a dime in it leaving any major game sites out of beta and keeping a hush-hush policy with the NDA still up until a few days prior the game's "official release" with hopes that the game will spread from that point on with the "mouth to mouth" tactic is finally revealed for all to see.
Nobody can guarantee that with that type of marketing strategy one will get only "good reviews", there are people that will play the game ,like it and pass on the word to others. But there are also those that will play it, not like it and guess what? They won't just go away to the next game they will first pass on the word to others. It's a revolving door that swings both ways and one better be ready for not only what goes out but also what comes in.
As for the big game sites? Well there are those that will write bad reviews about it and there are those that will write good reviews about the game both are inevitable. But there are certain things that the company publishing the game can do right, like invite lets just say 5 different correspodents of 5 large gameing sites during beta, give them an account, point out that the game is still in beta andNOT feature complete with more things to be added in the future and let them go from there. Did they do that? NO !!!! And before anyone decides to bring up Gianna Masseti and the 2 Italian guys that reviewed the game while still limiting their posting experiences due to the NDA being up; please don't , spare yourself the embarassment the one has a comic hosted on the official site and the other ones are from an Italian Darkfall fansite so IMO they hardly qualify as objective reviewers. Inviting correspondents from gameing sites with no vested interest on the game's success or failure is one thing and inviting people with a vested interested on it is another.
It's my opinion that if they had done during beta so the reviews would've been far less critical because of the game still being in beta, 2 months afterwards they're bound to get harsher reviews due to their own incapability to handle their sales, server issues, hacking and exploiting etc, etc. And just to add insult to injury what does this "PR" guy do after an unfavorable article is published about his game? The last thing anyone should even considering doing, going on a nerdrage and trying to discredit the status of the reviewer . I don't know how anyone is ever gonna take him and what he says seriously after this point.
On that note i'd like to end my rant by saying whilst i don't agree with the 2/10 the reviewer gave (maybe i would've given it a 4 or 5 if i felt generous enough) Darkfall i must agree with the total summary of points addressed in the review. Take away the numerical value of the review and most of the things said in it is what i saw when i played the game.
And to anyone that thinks that there isn't such a thing as bad publicity, especially over the internet, then they have another thing coming
I find it hard to believe Tasos unless he can actual show more proof this is no more than some more PR spin to add to the big list of lies from aventurine, and because we never know who is lying I would rather not side with the person who did lie blatantly over 7 years.
" We checked the logs for the 2 accounts we gave Eurogamer and we found that one of them had around 3 minutes playtime, and the other had less than 2 hours spread out in 13 sessions."
What POS.
not even the lowest troll would try to pull this, how horrible of a website are they.
give me a break
I think it actually takes less time than the reviewer took, to decide that this game is the worst PoS to ever make an appearance on a PC.
haha this is Mourning all over again. Flaming sites that write an honest review of the game. I have played the game and that review is SPOT ON!
Server logs my ass, what possible reason would Eurogamer have to slander an indie piece of crap company that noone has heard of before? Those of you who still believe that these "server logs" exist then ask yourself this: What other proof do you have for the server logs beside Tasos word that they exist and say what Tasos claim they do? Tasos has lied over and over again and this is for sure another lie.
This game is an epic fail and Tasos reaction to the review further proves that.

As soon as a developer pulls out the playtime-log card, you know there's something wrong with them.
taos should to that on every single review also offering stats like:

That is because Tasos cannot find anything positive to talk about his game.

Would be cool, and also see how many times they were killed by other players or killed other players.
Fair assessment of the game is what everyone wants.

+ time spent chasing a fleeing player
+ time spend macroing
+ time spend badmouthing each other in game, that is, leet talks
+ time spend hacking, that is, unexplainable behaviour, which sadly the server might not be able to detect
+ time spent stuck crashing when some people tried to raid
+ time spend waiting offline as the server crashed
+ time spend clicking F5 trying to sub (yes that is part of DF game)
+ time spent trying to defend DF as the best game history or future, yes the best fun in playing DF is talking about it
Well, the point that comes through is this -
All the player reviews and remarks have put alot of people off (like me).
For a professional the standard is a lot higher....you would think.
taos should to that on every single review also offering stats like:
+time sped on game
++AFK time
++longer session
++number of sessions
+time spend on party
+items used
+skill/ability used and how many times
+distance travelled
+ time spent fleeing
+ time spent chasing a fleeing player
+ time spend macroing
+ time spend badmouthing each other in game, that is, leet talks
+ time spend hacking, that is, unexplainable behaviour, which sadly the server might not be able to detect
+ time spent stuck crashing when some people tried to raid
+ time spend waiting offline as the server crashed
+ time spend clicking F5 trying to sub (yes that is part of DF game)
+ time spent trying to defend DF as the best game history or future, yes the best fun in playing DF is talking about it
that also the thing is statistics >> words

But there are certain things that the company publishing the game can do right, like invite lets just say 5 different correspodents of 5 large gameing sites during beta, give them an account, point out that the game is still in beta and NOT feature complete with more things to be added in the future and let them go from there.
Iiii-iiiiiit's.... me!!! *Hooray*
I find it hard to believe Tasos unless he can actual show more proof this is no more than some more PR spin to add to the big list of lies from aventurine, and because we never know who is lying I would rather not side with the person who did lie blatantly over 7 years.
