I'm sorry but the combat in LOTRO is no different or complex then any other MMORPG out. Strategy? Come on.... LOL. Lets not make it sound any different or less clicky clicky then the others, because it isnt.
The only thing LOTRO has going for it is FMs in groups, which frankly gets old after a month of grouping with PUGs if you have no other choice. Unless your always running with your kinship constantly, I found FMs a pain in the @#$.
The LOTRO combat is no different, if not worse, then other MMORPGs outright now. Lets be realistic....

Obviously you are the someone who never played a character past lvl 10, or a troll putting out disinformation, or a just someone who like WoW clicky clicky combat.
I can only speak for warden, minstrel, and LM classes but all three require a good bit of thought or you will end in the rez circle more times than is nescessary.
Not only does the way you fight differ but as a Minstrel I keep 2 complete sets of armor in my vault, one for soling/light grouping the other for serious group quests/raids. Not only that I will visit the bard to switch my traits around when I know I am in for a night of heavy grouping,
But if you are the type of player who never went past 10 and or just likes to click buttons till the mob or yourself is dead then I can see why you don't care for LoTRO.
by the way here is reality, the skill tables for the LM. That class involves DD spells, DoT spells, buffs and debuffs ,a pet, crowd control and some minor healing. He can even do rezzes. A little bit more complex than the average MMO class isn't it
and the one for the wardens, notice those things called gambits. They have to be set up first using abilities in different combinations and depending on which one you decide to execute they can alter the results of a fight dramaticly
and last but not least the Minstrel. A old school smite style cleric that can solo like a madman or be the primary healer for a group. Not to mention he has some pretty nifty buffs. He just has a hard time healing and doing damage at the same time but can switch from fighter to healer by disabling one of his buffs. I do that when I find myself in over my head soloing. If I play my cards right he rarely ever dies.

I only stuck around because I was in a great Kinship until I finally said enough was enough and moved on to bigger and better things.
Don't fool readers into thinking LOTRO combat is great because its not. Its honestly probly some on the simpliest button mashing I've experienced since playing MMOs.

Bored of the Rings? Yes Sir
I'm not sure you're braking, because you sped right past me when you said that the classes are bland but offered no reasoning to justify the comparison. How is a guardian in LoTRO any blander than a warrior in WoW? I personally don't think Turbine breaks a lot of new ground in terms of classes (although I think a minstrel can be a bit more fun to play than a priest), but to say that LoTROs classes are bland compared to classes in other games to which they're really pretty similar without providing any justification to back it up seems like it could be viewed as a bit disingenuous and primarily for the purpose of positing an argument regardless of its validity.
I do agree with you regarding the combat in LoTRO being quite similar to other MMOs, aside from fellowship maneuvers. I just don't agree with you regarding your class argument, and find it hard to see where there might be some common ground for agreement when you don't provide any details to justify the adjectives you throw out.
Like I said I can only speak for three classes, the Warden, LM, and Minnie. But the only games I can thinlk of that offered similar classes was he old smite cleric build in DAoC before they nerfed it and I still think Turbine ripped the warden straight from AoC with his gambit play. The LM is similar to the pet classes in most other games but is still far from bland.
Comined with the traits you can really customize your fighting style in LoTRO too. And I will admit it was ripped straight out of EQ. Never really played WoW much ( less than a month) so I really cannot compare LoTRO to it, but I have palyed most other mainstream western MMO's and can assure you that Turbine needs to aplogize to no one as far as the combat goes.
So the fact that you are bored has nothing to do with the fact that your life can be resumed to playing video game?
Having 3 lvl 60 means playing a lot, a big lot.
Getting bored after playing a game too much happens to everyone, not getting bored is more alarming if you can spend hundreds of hours doing the same thing on and on and still like it, you should definitly try to go out more.
I'm not a no life that sits in front of his computer all day long, I'm an intern that sits in front of his computer all day long.
Just a question for the "slow combat" complainers. What is the difference bewtrween EQII's LoTRO's and AoC's combat? I have played all three and they seem exactly the same to me. WOW of courswe is a click as fast as you can game, but otherwise LoTRO's combat is just as fast but probably takes abit more forethough and skill than any other game I have ecver played. The only other game I oplayed where the combat was mildly inrteresting and challenging was AoC and as far as I can tell LoTRO's warden class plays exactly the same.
I don't see how you couldn't see a difference. It's quite apparent when playing the games. Does it really matter? No, because Rings combat is slower across the board (i.e. mobs, crreps, etc. use the same system) so it doesn't affect anything in reality just takes some getting used to if you're coming from a different game except possibly CoH because the combat pace in that game is quite similar.
In fact, I've been back playing for about two weeks and already I hardly notice it anymore. When I first came back, yeah it was rather glaring the speed combat took place.
Like I said though you get used to it and from a gameplay point of view it doesn't matter.

I stand by my comments and reactions to the perception that Turbine and LotRO fans (collectively) regularly make LotRO out to be something it is not established to be in terms of popularity/poulation. I am not saying it is small or dying or stagnent or anything of the sort, but there is no proof or indication that it has achieve any kind of singularly unique success in terms of population than all the MMOs out there that are not fairly described as bombs.

how suprised am I...by this post?
"This may hurt a little, but it's something you'll get used to. Relax....."
Anyone who thinks the combat in Aoc, WoW, and LotRO is the same...needs to take a break from gaming....clearly not the same. But doing anything too log gets repetitive.....but not the same...

Eh have not played WoW enough to judge, but I have several mid 20's toons in AoC and playing my Warden and playing AoC is remarkably similar. Trying to rember what gambits do what and which skills I need to use to activate them is very challenging.
I had pretty much the same experience as the OP....I really enjoyed the game for about a month then hit the wall and couldnt stand it anymore.....When I first started I thought I was really going to enjoy it and signed up for 6 months....i almost went for the lifetime membership (thank goodness I passed on that)........Like many of you my issues were extremely boring and repetitive combat and that LoTRO is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too quest driven.......I mean you can kill 1000 trols or take mrs Hobbitbreath a pie.....Sad thing is you get more XP for delivering that pie than you do for killing the 1000 trolls.....I left the game before MoM came out and had no desire to return to try it......

Dude, you are out of your skull. No-one here has claimed that.
Yes there is one guy in here claiming that LoTRO is number two. But even he isn't saying that it's doing tons better than FFXI, WAR, EVE ect. All that any of the rest of us have claimed is that more folks appear to be playing now than before MoM. Several external metrics support that idea (X-fire, the website that pools logins attemps, ect.). The fact that no new servers have been added only means that the current server capacity has not been reached, it's not really a good counter argument to our impressions in game...much less X-fire.
"More popular than it was a year ago" doesn't say anything about how LoTRO is doing compared to FFXI, EVE, WAR, ect. No-one (save perhaps Mr. Bloodworth with his "number 2" assertation) has claimed that LoTRO is a "unique success" in terms of population among financially stable MMOs. You have now spent ten pages trying to stuff "WoW killer" into our mouths (no one in their right mind thinks LoTRO is anywhere near 11 million subs), and calling us liars for reporting what we are seeing on the ground in game (seems like more folks are playing than last year).
I'm done with this thread.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
tolkien fans would have played anything just as d and d fans would as an mmo . both games could have been so much more . but lotro is a slow but nice looking pve game (its not a bad rpg but its not worth the monthly fee) . the pvp is pretty horrible . ddo is essentially one long dungeon hack . on top this i ve also had problems cancelling my sub with turbine who charged my account after i d cancelled with them( and yeah i do know how to cancel my account its just that turbine did nt t seam to know how to cancel it ,nor would they take responsibility for thier error ) . personally i would nt play another turbine game again . i just think they are badly run company and their mmo games lack something . (imagination)

That isn't true. I used to love playing D&D before I found out about girls :P
...and quite frankly I thought DDO sucked. I almost passed on LotR because I was so dissappointed with how DDO turned out since Turbine was behind that game.
Glad I didn't...but about the only thing being a fan of a genre really ensures is that they're a lot more open to giving something a shot not that they'll love the game no matter what.
Still, like all mmos, Rings isn't for everyone. I do agree with you about LotR PvP though.

Yup, my thoughts exactly. I played LOTRO for almost 2 years and slowly came to my senses. LOTRO is truely a huge dissapointment imo.
I find it funny that these LOTRO fans stop in here to defend their game when the reality is that their only playing LOTRO because its based on Tolkiens work. If its Middle Earth its got to be good, right? Wrong! LOL
I've always felt that LOTRO will continue to go strong simply because of the Tolkien fans, and it will. But for them to claim all these things about LOTRO cracks me up because LOTRO is probly one of the most bland MMORPGs on the market. If it wasnt for Middle Earth, the game would be no where right now. Its harsh but sadly its true.

um, if you played it for 2 years it couldn't have been that bad??? How long does a non-sandbox MMO supposed to "last" anyway before one wants something different?

I played it for 2 years because I was a raid leader of a casual kinship full of great folks. The people kept me coming back, not the game.
As history has shown, a good IP does not a successful game instantly make. LOTRO is where it is, partly because its LOTR, yes, but mostly because its one of the most polished, stable, and frequently updated games on the market. Its simply a good product.
Also realize, that noone in this thread is an avrage player. Not in terms of MMO's, or LOTR.

And LOTRO is buggy as heck when new updates come out....(drunk goat rides anyone?) I've experienced more bugs in LOTRO then in any other MMORPG ive played (except AoC of course).

2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

"This may hurt a little, but it's something you'll get used to. Relax....."
Eh have not played WoW enough to judge, but I have several mid 20's toons in AoC and playing my Warden and playing AoC is remarkably similar. Trying to rember what gambits do what and which skills I need to use to activate them is very challenging.
I miss DAoC

Thanks you have signed your trolling with the part in red.

Denial makes one look a lot dumber than he/she actually is.

"I play Tera for the gameplay"
As history has shown, a good IP does not a successful game instantly make. LOTRO is where it is, partly because its LOTR, yes, but mostly because its one of the most polished, stable, and frequently updated games on the market. Its simply a good product.
Also realize, that noone in this thread is an avrage player. Not in terms of MMO's, or LOTR.

Do you know everyone on this thread? I'm an average player. What is your point?
And LOTRO is buggy as heck when new updates come out....(drunk goat rides anyone?) I've experienced more bugs in LOTRO then in any other MMORPG ive played (except AoC of course).
