Yep, same thing here. But I have finaly found the source of my problem. Lotro has everything, yet they somehow managed to screw up the most important feature, the thing you do all the time: Combat, it's extremely slow and boring. Combat is not fun, so it makes the game boring to play. Take for example Linage 2. This game is a pure grind. There are almost no quests, so you grind for months until you get to the levels to enjoy some good pvp. Yet combat hits hard and is fast. It's fun to play. In lotro after playing for 1 hour I am already bored and switch it off. When I play Lineage 2 I can play for hours to no end, and after all these years, every time I come back to it , it still keeps me playing for whole nights and I don't even realize it until the next morning. L2 has no quests and most mobs are just standing there, this is nothing compared to the lotro world... But combat is fast and makes you actually feel you are hitting something. This together with the great character progression makes the game fun to play. Then you add the great team play, the player trading and the pvp with castle owneship and you have a great game. Now take lotro.... slow boring combat... ruins everything.
Thats why I dont really like any Western MMOs. All of them have that same slow and boring combat thats has me falling to sleep. Yea, I quit Lord Of The Rings afther 2 months because that combat sucked. I would hit my skills and could not even tell if he did anything because it looked just like a regular melee attack. Also lacking the feel of danger from open pvp is something I cant live without.

Well...yeah, if you're a PvP'er, this is not the game for you. Isn't meant to be.
Not ALL western MMO's have the same thing, and more and more FPS and action-oriented MMO's are on the way. Something for everyone!
LOTRO, IMO, is not a game to be played maniacally. It's not a goal-oriented, race to the finish line type of game. It's meant to be enjoyed over time. Soak in the environment and the music. Enjoy the trip to Middle Earth, because this game NAILS it. Music, sound, setting, graphics, lore are all top-notch. And, crafting is very well done. Unfortunately, the economy doesn't really synergize wtih it well.
But, yeah, the character classes are lackluster, and combat is a boring button smash. The animations and sounds are well done, but there is nothing exciting or imaginative here. It's even more boring than WoW. And, the quests could stand to be a LOT more imaginative. They need to go the direction of WotLK quests.
But, if you know this going in and you don't play to fight mobs all the time or gather loot (I keep telling people, this is NOT a loot game even though loot does drop), you can enjoy it quite a bit. All the time? No. But, it is by far my favorite 'other' game. Whenever I need a break, I travel to Middle Earth and soak it in. It's a blast.
As history has shown, a good IP does not a successful game instantly make. LOTRO is where it is, partly because its LOTR, yes, but mostly because its one of the most polished, stable, and frequently updated games on the market. Its simply a good product.
Also realize, that noone in this thread is an avrage player. Not in terms of MMO's, or LOTR.
Huh?
What part didn't you get?
Do you know everyone on this thread? I'm an average player. What is your point?
And LOTRO is buggy as heck when new updates come out....(drunk goat rides anyone?) I've experienced more bugs in LOTRO then in any other MMORPG ive played (except AoC of course).
so how many u played 1? all others having much more buggs then lotro and that buggs never get fixed...

I've played all the big MMOs since leaving LOTRO.
LOTRO is a stable and fairly bug-free MMO (when they've had time to patch it) dont get me wrong. But to say its one of the most polished games on the market is false. Updates are regular, sure, but its a must for Turbine to keep their player base. There simply isnt enought to offer gamers near end-game to keep them happy.
Have just quit wow after 4 yrs i was on a massive burnout - i had tried a couple of trials and even bought lotro but never really gave it a good chance as i was too busy in wow so it joined the stacks of games in the cupbored for a year or so.
Just over a month a go i quit wow for good, id tried 3 times this year already but this was it i was done and they is no going back as i had a bit of spare time i looked in the cupbored and tried to decide if to give AoC, Lotro, Tabula rasa, EQ2, Vangaurd a really good go, having realised Tabula Rasa needed to be thrown in the bin i closed my eyes, made a mess and picked one out.
Having installed lotro and even buying the expansion pack for the future i was back in middle earth.
Having had a shit pc in the past flirts i was instantly blown away by just how great this game looks on a decent pc, and i was hooked and played solid for 3 weeks getting my Gaurdian to level 25 and getting my free mount.
The next few days how ever i just seem to loose intrest, i was finding the storyline great but i was not able to complete most end quests as i could not find groups and as some have said i was finding the kill 10 of long and boring., probally down to the slowness of combat.
By the end of week 4 i cancelled my sub., i just could not be arsd to sign into it.
Now in earlier posts and this might be true, i might be burnt out from mmo's in general but also lotro is game i had i hopes for and was even thinking of getting the life time sub, but they is just something as the original op said, its a great game but they is just something missing that totally catches you, and you are left trying to put your finger on it but cant.

I will agree with that, certainly of the MMOs I have ever played (SWG, DDO, GW, EVE, PotBS, AoC, and a couple others) it is the most polished and well made. I stand by my comments and reactions to the perception that Turbine and LotRO fans (collectively) regularly make LotRO out to be something it is not established to be in terms of popularity/poulation. I am not saying it is small or dying or stagnent or anything of the sort, but there is no proof or indication that it has achieve any kind of singularly unique success in terms of population than all the MMOs out there that are not fairly described as bombs.
Although proof has been placed in front of you on several different occasions, you still refuse to stop the trolling. If your "opinion", which is all it is with no further evidence, is that LotrO is not growing, then so be it. You made that post....move on. My opinion is that it is growing. The new "boosted" server, which was stress tested on Thursday, is an indication that the game IS growing.
Do I think the game is the end all? No. There are several things I would like to see addressed. (Housing, crafting) This game offers me more of the things I enjoy in an MMO than any other. I found WoW too boring and just silly. (Merlocs with space suits?) Eve was just a time sink and lacked any "fluff" that I enjoy. Just couldn't get into Everquest 2...was just blah. Vanguard was promising, but had a few too many bugs still yet for me. So, for right now, LotRO offers me everything I want in my MMO.
It isn't really a question of whether the game is growing or not, it is a question of whether the game as a population that qualifies as largely unique or notable and from what we can see, and by the lack of an announcement from Turbine of reaching any kind of milestone population, there is nothing to say it is notable. So my argument is not that the game is big or small or stagnate or growing but that whatever it is population wise that it really is not worth mentioning as it is not notable and not really an issue. Now, that being said, if Turbine wants to release the numbers and prove they have achieved something notable in terms of LotRo's size/population then by all means go ahead, but until then the game (as represented by fans and Turbine alike) has nothing to brag about in terms of population.

I won't call Smith a troll...just misinformed and/or not knowing that what he speaks means nothing as far if a game is boring. The game is fun as any other....boring is relative to what you like...not population at this point
"This may hurt a little, but it's something you'll get used to. Relax....."
I have no idea what your argument is since it continually changes. No one mentioned milestones or any such nonsense, but you. We only stated that it was growing. So please, stop your rantical trolling. It has lost it's amusement and the value of your replies has diminished with each posting. You continue to state things that no one else has even mentioned.

I have been pretty consistent if you are paying attention. I have said a good deal of positive things about the game as well. I just get annoyed when people offer up presumptions of the game as growing or very popular as a way to dismiss criticism because it is clear that Turbine is not talking about populations and the outward signs show nothing to indicate a notable popular/populated MMO is all.

when we give you the indicators you simply dismiss them as BS with no proof that they are BS and go on with your personal opinions so why bother Smith. Is this it simply attention you are looking for ? There is no debate in your posts just elitist opinions. Just this week Turbine has been having stress tests in order to find ways to help the over stressed servers. But I predixct you will find some BS way to dismiss that fct also, no proof that it is BS will be offered of course just your esteeemed opinion and overwhelming knowledge.

Again...your argument changed. When you find an argument and factual evidence to back it up, let me know. We have given you the evidence, but you simply dismiss it. We just said the game was growing, and we gave evidence to prove that.
I responded to someone holding up the game as growing/popular and using that unsubstantiated claim to dismiss crtiicisms of others. It is pretty simple and easy to understand unless you are just looking for reasons to flame and dismiss comments.

The game IS growing....we gave evidence to prove that. You are the one that threw in popular. There was no flaming. I just pointed out the flaws in your arguments, of which there are many.
Man, there is no reasoning with some 'fans'. I should give up but let me try one more time, though I am sure it (or they) are hopeless.
There is NO evidence that the game is growing one iota, none at all. Yes, they recently expanded to a couple markets (as do many MMOs). But despite that occurrence who is to say that the normal churn in US/Euro, where they haven't even ever had the need to a single server since launch, has cost more than those markets brought in? It is absolute speculation to say the game is growing, shrinking, or anything other than apparently doing well and not a big bust like so many other MMOs of late.
This may be a bit off topic but I wouldn't think they as a company are doing that great if they have to offer the game with the mines of moria expansion for $9.99!!! haha
Of course if you're a unwaivering cynic and pessimist, this is one way to view it. The equally valid alternative of course is that Turbine has so much money that they can afford to offer their game at a lower rate in order to bring in more people.
Hell, by your stupid logic, and yes it is stupid, Star Wars Galaxies must be doing gangbusters because they still charge $15 a month, and sell their boxed sets for $20+.
Maybe, just maybe, Turbine is trying to undercut the competition with lower prices on a better product because...they're a smart, effecient company that knows what the hell they're doing??

eh you claim that the game is not growing and have nothing to back it up with...
some people think the game is growing and have arguments to back it up.. Even Turbine is claiming that the game have been growing since Moria.
so whats your point again? They havent added any servers in Eu/US since launch? LotrO is the only MMOs post WoW that havent had server merges so that have to count for something when ti comes to the succes of a MMO...
but anyone who have been readind this forum for along time knows what Agtsmith is so its doesnt matter...
If WoW = The Beatles and WAR = Led Zeppelin Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
I am not claiming the game is growing or in decline or anything of the sort. I am just pointing out that all the proclamations that it is growing are just as speculative as those saying the opposite. We do not know if the game is growing or in decline as most MMOs are over time. The only two things we can say about LotRO populations with relative certainly it that the game is not a flop or otherwise suffering in steep decline like tanking games and that it is not some meteoric smash phenom hit. IN all likelihood it is probably only fair to say the game seems stable and successful and has a healthy population. Anyone who says otherwise is absolutely full of crap whether saying the pops are in decline or growing.

To be honest Smith I don't think most of the people you're arguing with are listening to what you're saying.
Not saying all, but it's obvious that a few of you guys fighting/debating with him think he is attacking your game. He really isn't.

I miss DAoC

I'm paying attention, are you? Notice the red above...In a post earlier you stated..
...It isn't really a question of whether the game is growing or not...

If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
Jesus, some people are hopeless.

I remember this thread. Can't believe it's still being hashed out.
To be honest Smith I don't think most of the people you're arguing with are listening to what you're saying.
Not saying all, but it's obvious that a few of you guys fighting/debating with him think he is attacking your game. He really isn't.
Urge to post resisted (with a slip up that stayed up for a few hours).
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
