the sheer scale of what you can do. Feel like trading ore from one station to the next for a little bit of cash? go for it. Feel like operation multi-million ISK trade routes through lowsec space? go for it. Feel like blowing the crap out of pirates or pillaging unwise players? go for it. Feel like feeding the huge industry used to churn out all those ships? go for it.
I think there is enough content in EVE to please most people and is separate enough from each other (read: not have to grind out mobs to mine most of the time, and the fact that you can get by without firing a single shot) that people aren't forced into anything.
of course the reason why it's not mainstream is due to the sheer complexity of the game but even then, that appeals to some players.
I'd much rather have sex with 1 really hot women than 500 ugly tramps in 50 different countries. Especially if you where required to read a manual because the ladies where so complex it boggled the mind. Freedom isn't that wonderful.
just imo
dont bash on a game just cause it hurts u to think. eve is a great game but is not geared toward the instagratifcation wow generation its geared toward teh people who use their heads.
You can't be bothered to write a coherent sentence using capitals or punctuation... And you're calling someone else stupid?
You're barely literate, for god's sake, yet you want people to believe that your game is better because it takes intelligence?
I guess what all the other MMOs would have to do to be as good as Eve or Ryzom is just delete all the quests, right? Then you would have freedom to anything you can imagine... well, except for quests.
No, first you would need to make every quest optional by removing XP and only giving Currency as reward.
Take away the instances, Take away all the NPC loot, Make everything craftable. Add risk to the game thorugh player looting or if you dont like that item decay that cant be repaired.
You would need to get rid of the global market system so people could be actual traders that have to go out and find the Best prices for stuff.
Take all the best crafting mats and toss them in areas that can be controlled by alliances that need to be fought over.
Get rid of instanced pvp, make people fight out in the world again.
Increase the difficulty of Mobs and drop the Xp group penalty so players can go on hunts again.
Do all this and the game would actually be a real MMO.
Might still be worse then Eve and Ryzom but atleast its a start and a way to get away from all the hand holding in themeparks.
You say you have all this freedom in themeparks? no you dont because those devs decided to reward you for features they want you to take part in (Quest stacking, Raids and Instanced pvp) people would never just RP in a corner of the map and Explore because all those players are designed to do nothing but go after rewards.
Just developing a character in a game world isnt enough they need to have shit handed to them for taking a piss!
I think it's a little ironic that this reads like a list of how to make an MMO worse. Let's remove quests, loot and XP, grouping, Auction House.... because no one likes those things. Once all the best features are removed, you would want to add FFA PvP with corpse looting. I hate to tell you, but that game would really suck.
Thanks though for giving me a better understanding as to why so many people can't get in to Eve. It's like someone tried as hard as they could to make an MMO that had none of the features people want.

If you played Eve Or Real Mechwarrior you Would understand Why we Love Eve and the "No Content" There is Something to be said for handing players the Reigns to an Entire Freaking Universe and told to go have fun. If you want themparks theres a Biggilon of them now.

It really is annoying how little WoW players actually know about MMOs.
First you dont remove quests you remove XP from the quest rewards.
You dont remove XP totally you just give it for Mob kills.
You take away a global Auction house and add in regional markets so the trading proff could actually be in the game.
You remove loot from the majority of encounters and replace them with mats so crafters are needed to create everything.
And I gave you a FFA or Item Decay option.
I never said I wanted Groups removed, I said make the game wrold more challenging so people will want to group more.
Seriously learn how to read before you come to eve forums.
So would Eve be less of a game if they decided to add meaningful, compelling story driven PvE content? IMO, it would finally start to compare to the rest of the MMOs on the market.
You put "meaningful" in there which is interesting, because the more story-driven PvE content you put in an MMO, the more the game heads towards a static non-changing world. Do you examples of MMOs with "meaningful story driven PvE content" so that we can better understand what you are referring to?

Your absolutly right....it would then compare to War, LOTR, Tabula Rasa and it would be much less of a game.
With too much of the Eve fanbase, as with Linux, once you get past the "We're so great we're going to take over the world!" rhetoric you start to realize that most of the rabid fanbase doesn't really want that kind of success, they've got too much ego invested in playing the underdog and deluding themselves into believing that somehow makes them better and smarter then anyone else. How is it attitude and ego to state that the game is more complex than other MMOs? I did not say it was better because it was more complex, just that it was.
No, Eve isn't any more complex then most any other MMO. Can you list the other MMOs that provide historical data for market items, complete with indicators and charts, for the sake of player research and analysis.
Can you list the others MMOs that have contraband? Now set that contraband's risk based on region and person standings. On top of that, throw in drug manufacturing... not just the drugs but building your own hidden away 'meth labs' to manufacture the drugs that you then plan to smuggle pasy police into the lucrative markets of the map. That's just two examples of where EVE is far more complex than most other MMOs. This isn't an ego thing... it's a reality thing.
Free Realms hit one million players in a month, how're Eve's numbers doing again? At least know the subject you plan to discuss. I'm going to leave the rest because I already typed it, but you've just made it clear there's no point going forward if you're going to compare the number of people that registered to try an F2P MMO with active subscription numbers of a P2P MMO. Take care, Myria
-- Whammy - a 64x64 miniRPG - RPG Quiz - can you get all 25 right? - FPS Quiz - how well do you know your shooters?
Just so you know most MMO's only let you do half of what you can do in EVE. The game does not direct or hold your hand to a endgame, there is no endgame. You make use of what EVE has and make your own decisions as to what you want to do, it doesn't limit you in crafting, what race ships you want to fly, if you want to be an outlaw to all, controlling territory, owning a guild, a P.O.S, or whatever else i can't think of at this time. I see many things happening and being sold as services that other MMO's don't even let you do.
Free Realms hit one million players in a month, how're Eve's numbers doing again?
Free Realms is a childrens game and F2p at that.
They don't have 1 million active accounts. hell even I made three accounts for my children.
They havent logged in since the first day (they prefer Cartoon networks MMO) .
You are trying way too hard to troll and bait Eve players when you match one of the best MMOs on the market with a Childrens game thats half filled with cradle robbers.

Overall complexity is achieved in various games through the use of different game mechanics, not explicitly from the ones you listed. I guess you never played SWG, AO, DAoC or Vanguard if you really believe there aren't other games out there with depth to the specific game systems you mentioned. Basic tasks are made complex in Eve due to the cumbersome user interface. other games can add the same level of depth and just make those game mechanics more accessible and easier to understand how to navigate. making game mechanics more user friendly does not make them have less depth.

I would need to educate every god damn person in here.
I would rather just toss info to people that are interested in the game and not actually come here to troll my game.
Edit: Have you ever played Eve? have you ever tried to get into something like Trading? if you go and look for a trading guide the god damn Pdf is 100+ pages long!!!!!!!
You think I have the time to explain every aspect of Eve when just one aspect is as deep and complex as that?
Eve is a game that gets better over time, its not easy to explain it to a guy that comes here as a fanboi of another game only to troll and rerail threads!
You can do all of those things in SWG or Vanguard. Just because those games also offer decent story driven content doesn't mean that you aren't also free to do whatever you want. You can create an elaborate fiction to explain your behavior in any game.
Ok granted SWG plays closer to EVE, but Vangaurd..come on. Ok if SWG is so good then why isn't it more popular?

SWG was the greatest MMO Ever but was changed by SoE and lucus Arts because they wanted to capitalize on WoW. Overnight they destroyed a game Everyone loved and turned a Sandbox into a themepark.

LOL....not saying it is a bad game, still is a immense game with good pvp and story, just asking why it's not so much more popular.
EVE's playerbase expands because people can play it at their own pace. They can fiddle around with whatever they want, wherever they want and still advance their character in real time regardless of whether their actions online resulted in any concrete gain for their characters. At the end of each day, their character advances whether they sat in a station and chatted, or whether they did missions, or went and harrassed a trade route in their expendable pirate ship.
Although not everyone advances at the exact same rate, the reality is that someone who is smart can become as focused as a veteran if they remain disciplined about their skillpoints. So people pay to advance, whether they "accomplish" anything or not.
Lastly, there are almost no bars to content in EVE. Unlike most games, a newb player just out of trial can see and do anything a vet can do with only a few exceptions. Sure it's not easy, might take some luck, or is nearly impossible without some minor help or a cash infusion, but the concept of freedom is supreme and encouraging to many gamers. So, EVE continues to draw more.

I never once trolled this game...I even complimented it. A PvP space MMO just isn't my cup of tea. But when the fanbois bash other games to make their game look better, it just makes the community look bad. Hold the game up on its own merits. This game can't really be compared to other games on the market because there are none. It's a niche game. Not everyone is going to like it.
Edit: Oops, forgot to answer your question. Yes, I have played the trial. I even read up on it before playing (some of the player-made tutorials are REALLY good). It just wasn't for me.

I love AO but that god damn interface is ever harder to use than Eves.
SWG doesnt exist any more, DAoC and Vaguard are good.
Dude im actually surprised you know actual MMOs other than that PoS WoW.
You could add up AO, Vanguard and DAoC and Eve would still have more stuff for a player to do.
Eve is a sandbox, all of those games are just more advanced Themeparks, Very good themeparks but still they can't stack up to Eve at all.
I played AO for a very long time and Even plan on making it my second MMO again once they release the graphics update but I wont sit here and lie to you and say its more complex than Eve.
Ill give you credit for listing games that take more than half a brain to play, you aren't as retarded as I thought.
Still wrong about Eve though and a Troll.
Just when i was starting to think you were capable of civil discourse.. you had to turn in to a stereotypical Eve fanboy and say my opinions are wrong, that I am retarded and a troll. It's OK, I understand that a lot of people can't accept the fact that not everyone shares the same likes and dislikes. It's also pretty common to turn a discussion in to a personal attack when you don't have facts to argue.
My opinion of Eve is that it isn't for me. Your opinion of Eve is that it's perfect. Only one of us is being unreasonable here.
-----Zero Punctuation Eve Online Review-----
Wow, the eve fanboi's are starting to sound a lot like the darkfall ones. Bashing other games doesn't make your game look more impressive. It just means you ran out of reasons why your game was so good.

Eve is far from perfect LOL!! But it is the Best Sci-fi MMo on the market and one of the best MMOs all around.
I know your deal You like BP, Why dont you go back and hype your game then?
It needs you seriously. After that failure of a demo it needs all the fans hyping it... trust me.
Playing: EvE, Ryzom
How can we explain how good our game is if the poeple trolling our forum only ever tried the trial???
I would need to educate every god damn person in here.
I would rather just toss info to people that are interested in the game and not actually come here to troll my game.
Edit: Have you ever played Eve? have you ever tried to get into something like Trading? if you go and look for a trading guide the god damn Pdf is 100+ pages long!!!!!!!
You think I have the time to explain every aspect of Eve when just one aspect is as deep and complex as that?
Eve is a game that gets better over time, its not easy to explain it to a guy that comes here as a fanboi of another game only to troll and rerail threads!

Ok granted SWG plays closer to EVE, but Vangaurd..come on. Ok if SWG is so good then why isn't it more popular?

OMG!!! StarWar Vets Inc!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You have no idea what you just did!!!!!!
SWG was the greatest MMO Ever but was changed by SoE and lucus Arts because they wanted to capitalize on WoW. Overnight they destroyed a game Everyone loved and turned a Sandbox into a themepark.
I hope the SWG vets dont see this post! lol
