What I am saying is just because WoW "Watered down the their game" Does not mean every other company had to follow suit and put more water on their games.
Please dont blame WoW or any other game for another companies lack of creativity.
I'm not WoW is the game that lacks creativity.
Taken game mechanic refined and dumbed done the general pop status.
I blame wow for filling this Genres community with people with no patience, wanting everything handed to them, players that would rather a MMO have a instanced CTF mechanic then Open pvp battles over territory with political struggle as an undertone.
The genre de-evolved that day, you all know it.
WoW does not lack creativity. WOTLK was a very great expansion with lots of creativity, story and lore
I'm sorry but WoW added nothing but simplicity to the genre.
MMOs have always had stories and Lore.
If anything WoW de-evolved the story and lore mechanics of an MMO by taking away players abilities to add to that lore and make it their own.
Im sorry but I have laid quiet long enough, WoW is the plague of the genre.
And yet so since WOW did this, its blizzards fault that other companys lost creativity as well?
Not exactly Blizzard's fault, but in general they've taken any good idea from any other MMO and implemented it in their game. The problem nowadays is that companies are trying to replicate all these tried and true features in their game and not innovating and using things from what we know to be unexplored territory...
What I am saying is just because WoW "Watered down the their game" Does not mean every other company had to follow suit and put more water on their games.
THe OP asks What was the biggest let down in mmo history. Well WoW opening its servers changed everything for the worst.
What came after was only a ripple effect of the romper room era and was expected after WoW sold millions.

Yeah wow opened servers and suddenly other companies couldn't release half finished games anymore and get praised for doing so. Oh noes!!1!1!11eleven!!11!! the big boy games can't compete anymore so lets all blame one company for taking their time and delivering a quality product.

No it was not the end all or be all for games but theres no doubt FF7 was one of the top selling single player RPGS for its time and still was at top for a long time yet did that make other companies lose creativity on their games and stop making original classics? No it did not. So stop blaming WoW for another companies fault, if a company releases a half assed no fun game its their fault.
WoW is not a let down, WoW came in, did what it did and was successful at that, was it water downed and easy yes you can say that but the whole genre was heading that way any way, From EQ expansions to asherons call 2.

FF& was good but not the best but it in no way turned the genre romper room
Age of Conan - it just didn't come close to being the PvP-centric and guild-oriented game that was talked about throughout development. Instead, it turned out to be a stripped down WoW clone with detailed graphics and boobs.

I never said FF7 dumbed down the genre all I am saying is it was extremely successful and sold more copys than any rpg in that time. It changed the face of rpgs as we knew it, before then rpgs was something that was seen for geeks and nerds but when ff7 came out every one was playing it and it made the genre cool to every one. Yes there were epic games before that and maybe even better games before that but theres no doubt FF7 was the most successful in its genre at that time.
Same way with WoW when you think of mmorpgs before WoW you think of geeks and nerds, after WoW it became cool, more people went to the genre, it gave every one accessability and is still talked about by a lot of people to this day, WoW is the most successful mmorpg in the genre and because of its success companies want that success also so do they try their best to emulate WoW, even SWG changed its whole persona, instead of being a sand box and letting players choose their role they went down to 9 iconic classes and tried to make it accessible for every one.
so all in all companies just want money, they see what WoW did nothing really original or revolutionary and they try to remake what they see instead of making something completely different and new because that would be too much of a risk.
so lets not blame WoW who is successful and lived up to what it was, nothing more than an improvement on everything out there and lets start blaming companies themselves for not being original.
I have to go with Vanguard, it was supposed to be the WoW killer No it was never supposed to be the WOW killer, still trying to figure out who brought that lie into the scene. I know that term is used a lot but thats what we all thought it was, we thought it would return us to the glory days of EQ. that alone should tell you it wasn't gonna be a WOW killer of a game. Exploration, fun, grouping, etc. it was supposed to be THE pve game.I think it turned out to be the biggest flop in mmo history. Exploration was definitly a part of Vanguard when I played the game during CB/OB and a few months in release. Fun, yes it was, but keep in mind not everyone is alike. Grouping, another thing I really liked and enjoyed, only can geuss that the group benifiths didn't fit everyone's pleasure as some want it all right from the bat. Anyway I fully understand that it is YOUR opinion, I just had to share mine on Vangaurd, now you might ask if I am still playing Vanguard, no I aint after a few months after releasethe game it was fun but it was still fantasy, and I kinda have enough of fantasy and really long for some Sci-Fi at the time and even now. So pure because it was fantasy I left as most feature's I loved, but I aint into games pure for it's feature's, there need to be more that needs to atract me and keeps me playing in the long run with a MMORPG. But to share my opinion about what my personal let down was I can only think of Star Wars Galaxies when the NGE hit, sure many things done to the game did upset me at the time, but I could have settled with it if not most I knew and played did leave, it was more the lose of the community (obviously due to the changes made, which I didn't like at all) but as a gamer I can addept, but it had no use as the community we had was no more........
Tabula Rasa - This game had hype, had name power and fell completely flat. Complete overhaul of the game and forcing it out way before it was ready in its new design killed it.
AoC - Again, hype is a bad bad thing when you push a product out too soon. My gf is in love with the game, I though see the huge flaws in it. Being a Robert Howard fan, this game I prayed would be good and crushed my dreams. I still play it, but not very often.
DnL - Just utter garbage
Vanguard - This game is amazing now, but took them long enough to get there.
AC2 - Just couldnt capture the magic of the first.
This is all subjective. Alot just cant get past World of Warcraft so most MMO's will be a clone to them. But theres a lot that didnt launch like the dev's said, or we read about.
AO: Alien Invasion. It was basically one randomized dungeon and player cities, not worthy of being an expansion. The previous AO expansion, AO : Shadowlands, was epic in scale with zones for every level range. As much as Shadowlands changed AO into EQ1.5 which was lame, that is a proper model for an expansion (at least when the devs actually completed it year or two later). Alien Invasion was a $5 booster if anything, 39.99 was a complete ripoff.

Not every MMO developer had its own backing. It's easy to take your time when your producing from your own coffers. Other developers had to seek investors who demanded timely returns. WOW was developed on the backs of Diablo and Starcraft.
It is just disappointing when people say WoW started the water downing of the genre they completely forget about everquest planes of power and beyond and Asherons call 2.

The fault always lays with the captain of the ship. WoW lead the casual movement in MMOs.
If we were apart of some back to the future time machine movie and wanted to rewrite the wrongs of a MMO genre you would change WoW (EQ was still an emmersive experience were RP was king and challenge was sought after).
WoW is when the genre started turning sour, not with lotro, not with AoC or WAR it was WoW.
SO when the OP asks me what was the biggest letdown of the MMO genre, I say WoW because that day immersion, RP, complexity, depth, challenge and world simulations Died.
If I had to choose a second one after WoW it would be the day SoE turned SWG into a WoW clone, which also wouldnt of happend if WoW never existed.
I am a huge WoW hater, but WoW is far from a letdown or the cause of the waterdown or themepark games. They just did it better than anyone else. Simple as this, most hate WoW because it opened the door to the mainstream to come into our little niche world and take over. Most resent Blizzard for what they see as opening the floodgates of hell into our world. Personally, I hate dont like WoW because the game doesnt appeal to me, nothing more. To claim it is the cause of waterdowned games, that is a falsehood. They werent the cause, they just perfected it and now everyone else is trying to figure out how to do what they did. WoW is the Windows of MMOs. It may not the best, it may not be the most fun, but it is the one everyone knows and uses. Those of us who play Eve, Darkfall, DAoC, CoX, Vanguard, and whatever, we are the linux guys. We know we will never have the numbers as WoW, but we know a better product and prefer to be the niche instead of the in crowd. Sorry if the comparision sucks, head is splitting due to meds I am on for Bell's Palsy.

I'd say the MMO that let me down the most at launch was Warhammer, it ended up feeling like the PVP was even more of spam/gankfest than WoW PVP was.
SWG takes the cake for most drastic letdown though... I miss you home...

THe OP asks What was the biggest let down in mmo history. Well WoW opening its servers changed everything for the worst.
What came after was only a ripple effect of the romper room era and was expected after WoW sold millions.

Exactly what I was saying. When FF7 was released it basically changed single player RPGS yet it did not stop companies from releasing classic single player rpgs after its released.
Another New player to video games, FF7 wasnt the be all end all of RPGS it wasnt even the most polished RPG.
Check out the old Ultima Rpgs those games were Epic, what about the phantasy star Rpgs on the old master system.
You're just like the WoW players you think the genre started with your game LOL!
Explain to me how FF7 Dumbed down the genre though? by adding graphics and cut scenes?
FF& was good but not the best but it in no way turned the genre romper room

Playing: EvE, Ryzom
Sneaker,
I am a huge WoW hater, but WoW is far from a letdown or the cause of the waterdown or themepark games.
