Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
I just don't see it. The majority of subs are going to stay in Asia, this game won't hold 250k subs in the US.
That absolutely did not contribute at all to the discussion
Although, I have to say I agree - Aion is a bit too 'grindy' for Western gamers, so will hit max 2 mil amongst EU/USA combined
Yeah..........so a totally unrealistic number of 2 mill EU/US subs is contributing to the discussion then?
He qualifies his number. So as a base estimate it would get 3.5 mil more when released in EU/NA, he therefore thinks it would have less since "Aion is a bit too 'grindy' for Western gamers".
I realize people like to be snarky on the internet, but know when it applies.
I'm sure many people used the emotion when talking about sub numbers in the mil for a game called WOW back before it launched !!

What I find amazing is that the game isn't even out a year I believe and it has more subs than probably LOTRO, AOC and Warhammer combined and Aion still has to release in Taiwan,NA/EU and Australia I believe.
This is exactly what I am saying. I think you can combine the subs of every western mmo other than WoW and still wont come up with 3.5 Million.

Asian numbers are always much higher than US/EU numbers.
Thinking that just because an Asian game posts numbers in the millions ( which is not unusual ) that it will post numbers in the millions in the EU/US market is not a valid discussion given the past history of these types of games.
Anyone got a page that shows the exact wording of the press release? Would be interesting to see what definition they use for "subscriber", especially for China.
Who said that it would post millions in the US? What I am saying is that is does not matter how much it post in the US because the US is a small market. Global Sales are whats important.

Are you people even aware of the heavy nationalism in Korea (both sides)?
Of course the entire population is going to tune in, it's a national-product made in-country. They may do ok in China, depending on whether they are too busy playing their own overhyped games made there. I highly doubt it will do any good in the US, and not because we have our heads up our own ass when it comes to nationalism - because we have played this iteration of the MMO circuit many times before, and just because it's a new entry won't make up for the 10 years of the same gameplay we already had experience with. It's only popular in Asia because it was made there - look at WoW - it is literally destryoing the Asian MMO market, and that is a fine counterpoint to what I just stated...
...that a percievably better product will do better - as long as it's even available. Being the first real westernized game there, hell ya it's taking out the competition.
~ and don't bring up the "Eastern and Western gamers like differnet playstyles", which is bullshit. If that was the case then WoW would have failed over there. The developers in those countries just tend to think in the wrong spheres, and it makes every new game come out with a flavor of last year's favorite.

Personally I think its so over the top that every game wants to be WoW, looks like WoW, plays like WoW.
I mean Jesus Christ what about a game based on Angels and Demons/Air Combat PvP is like WoW? I mean where is the one similarity? Whens the last time you sprouted wings in WoW and fought in the air?
WoW wasnt even the begin-all to mmo gaming yet so many ppl on these forums swear it was.
Since DaoC biggest feature was Realm v. Realm combat, and WoW has realms, that means DaoC is trying to be just like WoW right? Oh wait DaoC was like 5 years before WoW. But still they stole WoWs ideas right?
Oh and I love the "asian grinder" comments about Aion also. As the game boasts what 1,500 quests.
If its a WoW clone in your mind then dont play. If its a grindfest in your mind then dont play. If you dont plan on playing then dont post. I play WoW still and when Aion drops im playing Aion.

I'm thinking about 5-7 million.
Someone disagrees with the estimate and gets slammed and insulted. How does the OP 'qualify' his numbers in the original post? The first reply was in no way 'snarky' and contained no more guesswork than the OP.
Wouldn't it be nice if people applied the standards they measure others with to themselves as well?
BTT: I am skeptical that Aion will manage to have subscription levels in the millions in the US and/or EU. I am basing this on the fact that games produced in Asia have traditionally not fared all too well in the west, combined with the fact that the art work (and personally I think it's quite pretty) does not have the mass appeal it might have in the East.
the fact that even thought theres alot of quest you will still be grinding mobs alot to level. That is the sole reason this will not take off in America.

i think it will fair well over here, in the millions? maybe not but deffinitly better than the over hyped crap we got in 08.the game is a good balance between pvp and pve, plenty of quests to do, decent crafting or atleast the items you make are worth it.and fun/smooth classes and game play wich for me is most important. is it grindy? meh if you compare it to the wow clones out a little, but i'm tired of running to the end of mmos, i enjoy lvling and exploring to be honest.
Personally I am happy Aion has 3.5 million subscrbiers, this game could be a WoW killer. But anyway, it isn't going to be popular in the English market, I'd say 200,000 subscribers or less.
Aion is already successful enough to guarantee it's survival and growth. The number of players in other regions, the game's present quality and the fact that it already has recieved lots of praising in NA/EU has me convinced that the game at least won't flop in our region. The exact number of subs can't be forseen and it's futile to even try.
We will get those results soon enough ;p
Even if it proves not to be as big of a "hit" over here as it is in Asia, I am confident that the game will have a very healthy number of NA/EU followers.

Fair enough, but it easy to point out that the majority of Eastern MMOs are just as afraid of change as the Western Ones - which sux because Western is clearly superior... and when I say that I don't mean in setting or art-styles (which are definitely part of the divide, for sure), I am talking about the content-to-leveling ratio. These days a commericial failure in the states typically has one major fault, gaps in quest content that leave an open grind... which IS how most Eastern games are ran, but worse. That doesn't fly here, even if the quest grinds are percievably just as mundane. Heh.

You should go check out some of the forum sites in asia. They are bitching about the same thing for a while now (post wow launch in the east). You would be mistaken if you think the eastern Dev's are not listening to the masses.

i have my doubts about aion NA/EU hitting the 3.5 mil subs in a year even. my reason? population. China blows the US and EU population. And then you have the RMT's to count several thousand accounts there, and then you have the people in NA contributing to the china SUB list. I have already seen RMT sites advertising Aion gold. So to sum it all up, i dont believe the 3.5 mil subs number.
I can't understand why its so hard for people to READ and UNDERSTAND what they read.
