I think these will be paired. Also I think there will be a talent system, so that Jedi | Sith can focus on either tanking, dps or healing. So I doubt there will be other healers in the game.
Oh man I hope not. I mainly play healers in every MMO but I have no desire at all to play a friggin Jedi lol.

I can't recall that many healers in the SW lore, so I think they would stick with something more iconic than a normal healer. Jedi is sort of acceptable in that regard.
Just guesswork, but it just seem likely to me. Bioware stated it is a game for heroes, so I don't expect any doctors or field surgeons..
hmm im not a big star wars fan, but i have still watched the cinematic, and looking forward to atleast try this game
but i've read about the smuggler and seen some art of the smuggler hiding behind a pilar, exactly like the blue girl walking with the sith jedi does, when the fight begins, she hide behind a pilar.. so i assume she is sith answer to smuggler, just with another name.... :P
so Jedi, Trooper, Smuggler, i would guess a buff / healer of some kind
and Sith jedi, bounty hunter, "sith smuggler" and heal /buff
just my guess though, but im pretty sure that blue girl with the 2 "things" as hair is sith's answer to smuggler... :P
I am leaning towards the last pairing being Droids. Droids can open up lots of possibilities as far as "programs" (skills/ abilities) and function ( dps, hacking / picklocks, open doors, crowd control (grease spray the floor) and even healing. Droids were the ones who replaced Lukes hand, delivered Luke and Leia, etc.
Lots of room for crafting (engineering for upgrades, etc) too.
Aww crap, I thought it was eight for every side. I just hope the make really a lot of branch out subclasses, skill trees and stuff to follow individual pathways. Just 4 classes and then cookiee cutters all over, seeing millions of Jedi/Smugglers/Troopers all the same as you would be a letdown. But then, I understand given the fact they want stories for EVERY class they cant make so many right away. Still a bit a letdown.
Ya, I misread that too. I thought 8 per side. 8 total seems so.....limiting. But I can live with it as long as there is a wide variation between different specs, and lots of customization, which they have already mentioned.

a game for heroes? and you're stating that a combat medic is anything less than a hero? I'm insulted!
aw, is this another of those silly games where each side has different classes which ultimately end up being terribly homogeized because you cant really have different classes on each side?
bah

This might be where our companions come into play, maybe we just specialize our companions to be the common (tank/healer) of MMO's. Pull out my R2 to heal or pull out my Krayt to tank.
Remeber that Edge article a few days ago with all of the characters on the front page? Notice that all the characters shown on the two pages are the known player characters (BH, Troopers, Smugglers, etc) in game....except for one...
Notice on page one upper left hand corner shows a green Droid standing there. Are we possibly seeing the hint of a playable droid class?

i'm hoping for an engineer type class where you can do things like lay mines or sentry guns or hack into computer systems and stuff, like in the other kotor games.

Throughout history, field medics have been referred to as the real heroes of the battlefield. So I think medics fit just fine.

according to that link to swtor.com theres only two classes revealed. so that means there are 6 classes left to be revealed. nothing is official until it is officially announced.
There will be 2 factions, though i have liked a 3 faction to chack they ballance, and controls as in DAOC. The battle between the faction, will focus on resources, doungens, and control spots.
I hope we will see a 2, skill system addéd to the pvp system for rewards, but i dont know, if there will be a system as this, and im a fread that this will not happen.
Beside that i hope that the skillsystem, will be more like: laerning by doing.
The games it self will, be biuld on crafting / player making. And forced adventure ( If you want to become fully skilld ). When it comes to pve, my quess it, that is will be crafting related loot, and basic eqepment. ( nothing comperet to the crafted eqepment. )
- Do i like this ide no
- But still i hope this game will be the game that i will play for a long long time. And that the game will get exp, as: Flights, New planets, New classes, and better eqepment.
If I had to put money on it, I would say there will not be any dedicated healing classes. It just wouldn't be Star Wars. It wouldn't be BioWare either, for that matter. Nothing is more important to BioWare than story and contextual realism, if there is any healing functionality, it will be built into the options of the combat classes, probably not a dedicated function. They have stated many times that all of the classes will adhere to iconic Star Wars archetypes: I challenge those who want healers to actually come up with iconic Star Wars characters who were more classifiable as being healers than anything else.
As for multiple force using classes, maybe there will be some kind of branching structure for Jedi and Sith, but I highly doubt with only 4 classes to a side that more than one base class on each side will be force sensitive.
Clearly, regardless of what it is called, there will be a cover using class on the Empire side, because otherwise people would start crying about imbalance. The last class pairing is anybody's guess, but it would be more productive to look to the characters of KotOR or the movies on which to base your guess work than to look to stale MMO mechanics that BioWare hasn't shown much indication of feeling the need to adhere to.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.
I said this before, Jawa and/or Ewok. Why? Because of the RP fun of playing those races. It would be off-beat and different than playing mostly standard humanoid race.
aw, is this another of those silly games where each side has different classes which ultimately end up being terribly homogeized because you cant really have different classes on each side?
bah
I wouldnt go so far as to say that just yet. Not too sure why people have it in their heads that the two factions classes are somehow paired against eachother. Dont recall ever hearing Bioware guys say anything like that. Nor am I seeing how the classes introduced thus far in any way "balance", "pair", or otherwise reflect eachother.

Even more reason to believe Droid will not only be a playable race but a profession....check out issue #8 of the TOR comic
"If we don't attack them, they will attack us first. So we'd better retaliate before they have a chance to strike"
I don't think that Medics will make it into the game as a primary class. Im betting that they will take a lesson from SWG and add something along the lines of a Stimpak(healing potion) that has a moderate timer attached to it.
What im hoping for is a droid handler(like other people have mentioned). A droid handler would be able to have only 1 droid type functioning at one time. One would be a battle type droid for those combat situations, another droid could be a medic type droid which would make the droid handler the group healer, another droid would be a seeker/recon/spy droid for those situations where it is just too dangerous to send in a real player. This would deliver to the game a "pet class" as well as a "healing class" and adding in the droids as a semi-playable type character.
When looking at sucessful MMOs, there seem to be a certain type of classes that the Devs look at having. Tank=Sith/Jedi, Nuker/DPS=Trooper/BountyHunter, CrowdControl=Smuggler/?Spy?, Pet Class and Healer. Since there is only 1 class type left as an unknown then it would make sense to combine a Pet Class with Healer option.
8 Classes total is really a tiny amount of classes, even more so when you consider just how many character archtypes there are in the SW universe. It's Bioware though, so it's a safe bet there'll be a good amount of customizability. If the classes are meant to be 'factional opposites' then Bounty Hunter | Smuggler makes the most sense. Both are more fringe characters that fit the "do anything as long as there's a profit" role. They would seem to play as polar opposites, too: the Smuggers are supposed to make use of a FPS style cover system, while the Bounty Hunters are definitely going to be amazingly mobile. Makes for an interesting dynamic. Plus: Boba Fett | Han Solo. I rest my case.
The opposite for the Trooper class is a bit harder, though I think we can get some clues from the KOTOR games. Something like a Sith Commando or a Sith Grenadier would make sense, I think. Not quite sure how it'd be different mechanic wise ( or if they're even trying for classes on either factional side to be different besides the name ) but I like the idea of an evil tank guy who lobs grenades at people. Even if I hated those Sith Grenadier @$$wipes in KOTOR. Another possibility might be to pluck the Mandalorians as a tank class, assuming they just don't use them as a race or if they're even around at this point in the timeline.
The two mystery classes could be friggin' anything, though it's gotta be some kind of support or healer class. I could see them re-using the more healery Jedi class from KOTOR perhaps. Though... to kinda fit SW canon their really shouldn't be a Sith Force Healer... Dark Side's not supposed to work like that, it's traditionally not supposed to be used for healing. I guess that would chalk up another vote for a Medic class, a droid would be awesome. Though.... who said Droids couldn't just be used as a race choice?
Someone up there mentioned Slicers: I'd be willing to bet my right foot that slicing ( if they choose to use it ingame ) will end up being a function of BH and Smugglers, if not an outright 'trade skill'. Either would be awesome, slicing's awesome.

As far as a counterpart for a smuggler...
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
I would think that the Bounty Hunter is the opposite for the smuggler, in a strict story sense at least.
I forsee:
Jedi | Sith
Smuggler | Bounty Hunter
Trooper | Imperial Officer
Medic | Doctor
or, if BH is the opposite of Trooper then:
Jedi | Sith
Smuggler | Spy
Trooper | Bounty Hunter
Medic | Doctor
Something like that.
I'm thinking crime bosses. Seriously if they give me the option of being a fat disgusting Hut I'll do it.

Droid handler ( or Animal master) | Droid controller
Actually I think rather than droids they will go for pet classes like droid or animal handlers ..
