Personally I will be very surprised if it is just 8 classes that are polar opposites of each other, that just wouldnt seem like KoTOR.
However, it wouldnt surprise me if each class had 3-4 specialisations such as the prestige options at lvl 15 in KoTOR 2. even if these arent available at the first level. i.e:
As for healing, I think it will mainly be things such as Med Packs for incombat, as well as Jedi's being able to do Big heals on a single target, or a group wide small heal. And for the Sith side, I think it will be healing via dps, i.e Leaching life from your enemies to heal your team.
It all depends really, it could be that the 8 classes, have several prestige tree's which branch out at certain levels and thus further specialise them.
i.e Jedi - Guardians(at say lvl 10) and then Weapons Masters(at level 30 or so) etc,
or Jedi - Sentinal and then Watchmen
if each class had that sort of options, then it would make things very interesting, as your choices would change everything about your character
I think that assuming: a) that each class will have a polar opposite from the other faction, and b) that these classes will conform to basic mmo classes is seriously underestimating the creative forces at work for BioWare. I have played a great many of their games and I can safely say that few of them were "cookie cutter" copies of any other game out there. BioWare seems to value originality and story over mass marketing in my opinion and I have no reason to think it will be otherwise with this release, especially given the immense amount of source material they have to work from and the understandably high expectations of throngs of SW fans worldwide.
That being said, I would venture my guesses as an assassin type class for the sith and can see the pet classes fitting well. As far as the healing goes, so far all of the classes revealed realistically would have some form of first aid training and so would have at least a modicum of self heal in their advancement options somewhere. I agree that the SW universe doesn't lend itself well to traditional healing classes though it's not a far stretch to assume that each class they do have will be able to perform this roll to a certain degree.
The main obstacle to droids being Jedi is the lack of midichlorians. However, a Jedi can have over 90% of their organic body replaced and be a "droid Jedi".
Although apparently droids can use lightsabers.
I think that was not a robot, there was some biotic lifeform inside, dyiing...

That is an excellent point. Outside of Jedi being on both sides (since that is a necessity due to the existing lore of the IP), making the same class for both factions would be a major cop out. The remaining classes shouldn't be a direct counterpart to any given class of the opposing faction. They should be unique, or at least as unique as they can be, given that most abilities in MMOs are differentiated primarily by animations and particle effects (on a MOB lacking specific resists, an ice bolt is functionally the same as a fireball, and a great slash is the same as a big chop).
I am praying to God in Heaven that there are ZERO dedictated healers classes!
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal
I dont think that all the faction's classes will be the polar opposites of one another. I think it will extremely interesting to find the outcome of how each class compliments the other. I'm also interested to see how Bioware will integrate this with the whole 'Soloing' idea that everyones on about . Of course, Sith Jedi and Jedi will have there similarities, its an integral part of the whole Star Wars lore... but i get the feeling that Sith will have a more damaging use of the force. Take a look at Chancellor Palpatine - He can shoot friggin lightning from his fingers! A classic Sith move. And then theres the famous 'Jedi Mind Trick' which is strictly jedi, hence the name Brings to mind the part where Ben waves away the stormtrooper... classic
I think it's really funny who all of you assume Jedi and Sith Jedi as a class... Jedi are not Jedi until they trained by a Jedi Master or a Jedi Knight... I would think of it more of a profession... And not as difficult as is SWG but pretty difficult to attain that class...
I would not like a game with 90% Jedis... It would be totaly non-canon as there weren't that much Jedis... And in the Old Republic era? Jedis where a rare occurence...
So my guesses are:
Sith:
Bounty Hunter
Massani
Kissai
Engineer
Republic:
Tropper
Smuggler
Medic
Egineer (With other name)
And everyone at some point will have the chance to become a Jedi or Sith, depending on their force metter that would grow with theirs choices... But this is pure speculation...
I've read the Old Republic books... For this to be canonicaly accurate it should be something close to what I said... But it probably won't be... It's just my bet...
Ahem. General Grievous was not a jedi or even force sensitive as far as I can tell. He was merely trained in the art of lightsaber combat by Count Dooku.
I think Darth Vader would have been a better example. He also had much, if not most of his body replaced by machinery and was very very force sensitive.
I'm so ashamed of myself.
I actually looked this up out of curiosity. When he was still human and received the injuries that resulted in him looking the way he does, he was given a blood transfusion from blood obtained from Sifo-Dyas.

I don't think they would make you "Attain" Jedi, but you would probably have to go through the trial when you first make one.
And there is a boatload of Jedi during the Old Republic Era, Your Dog could be a Jedi if he knew how to hold a Lightsaber right during this time.
I also don't think they would make a Medic class either, I think they would stick with the idea of you having to take care of yourself, be it Med Packs or some other type of self healing items/abilities.

Player characters are NOT a represenative sample of the game world populations.
It's confirmed the sith is an aggro/dmg sponge,so holy trinity, here we come!
Semi-confirmed, I think. Anyhow, you could have that and still have no healer. Or, more precisely, you could have the Sith/Jedi work much like a "tank" in an MMO and still not have a healer. Especially if "tank" is just the closest approximation. Anyhow, if they go Holy Trinity fully then it would be a sad waste. The Holy Trinity is definitely not appropriate for a Star Wars game (but I do agree that if a Jedi charges a group of guys with blasters, they probably all do focus on trying to kill him, but that just makes a good bit of sense given how deadly the lightsaber is and how cover and other precautions against incoming blaster fire won't work at all against a Jedi).
I for one hope that Bioware thinks outside the box because healers have traditionally been very boring to play for me. I hated that I "had" to go resto on my Druid in Pre BC WoW because "feral" was not viable. Blizz later realized this and implemented dual specs so I can still have fun as feral and only swith to rest for instances where we do not have a healer. My Bear Shammy and Tempest of Set in AoC have been the first set of fun healers that I have ever played in their healing role.
Personally I love healing. Every mmo I play, I always roll a healing class because I enjoy it.
So yeah, I so hope there is some kind of healing class.
And yes, healing is a optional class. Since we are talking about TOR, and will be a generic game, soloer friendly, I doubt a "team-oriented" class will be added. And If is added, will be something like a combat-healer, more combat than heal.
There will be NO Healing class or crafting classes like engineer.. These options are NOT heroic..
Given their will be no healing class like Clerics, Priest or Medics.. I wonder how you do "RAIDS" as Bioware promised in end game without them? hmmmmm I guess raids will be based on nutrition of numbers.. Kill the bad guy before he kills all of you, NO HEALING.. lol Not that is a bad thing, but sure will be interesting to see how it's applied
From what I gather, There are no rolls of classes like dps, tank, cc, or healing.. It's ALL dps and dps only.. That should make it easier for finding groups I guess..
Please stop comparing, or looking for classes, from the Star Wars movies. This game is set 3500 years before the movies, things change in 3500 years.
I doubt there will be healer classes. I think I read in an interview that they weren't going to have healing classes and each class would have healing abilities. I'm sure I also read Jedi would have a self healing ability and Sith would have a drain life ability for healing purposes. I think they said non-force classes would have med-packs, etc for healing. They want it so people are responsible for there own health management.
My Thoughts: I don't think you should try and pair up the classes between the factions, I have a feeling the bioware are trying to make unique classes. Obviously this will make it difficult to balance. Droids will probably not be a playable class but be a pet, I'm not sure whether there will be a pet class or I think most like each class will be able to have a droid companion, although there was a droid assassin in KOTOR so I could be wrong. Possible missing classes could be Spy, Assassin, Mercenary... if there are pet classes there could be a Creature Handler class on the Light side and a Combat Droid Engineer class on the Dark side... pure speculation of course.
I am not sure that there will be more than one Jedi and Sith class. However, I believe you will be able to become different type of Jedi, like Consular, Guardian and Sentinel were in KOTOR. Alternatively there will be two classes for each side, with one focusing more offensive/tanking and another on buffing/healing.
Spy/Agent/Assassin is most likely to be one class that will be Sith-side equivalent to Smuggler. Stealthy operator with ability to use sniper rifles and abilities that debuff and perhaps even add DoTs.
Imperial Commando, as a part of Imperial Army, is also mentioned in the released comic.
Mandalorian might also be one playable race/class of some sort, as they do feature quite heavily on comics etc. belonging to this era.
In KOTOR there were some droids, but not sure you will be able to main one as a main character, but this could indicate that there will be a class that specializes in droid handling or otherwise some sort of techonology/computer expert, say Engineer/Slicer/Technician. I know every class will be able to have a companion, but perhaps this type of class would be more proficient in using droids.

What about a teri kasi artist or some kind of class that is anti force sensitive. Some other melee class..
Also i read bioware plans to make the classes more customizable then even SWG was. Remember with SWG you could go mix and match many different types of classes, part medic part smuggler, part TKM part carbineer.
I suspect there will be a limited number of classes with a highly customizable skill line that is not like WOW or other systems.
Sure it would be nice to see a healer, but it be better imo if all classes had some kind of heal, nothing big... but a heal that can heal your "just a flesh wound!" ...
A sniper kind of class would be nice... a sneaky longrange guy.
1. Teras Kasi practitioner is highly possible. No game currently delves deep into the history of the planet Bunduki (home of the artists), so far as I know, and at some point the Jedi obliterate the planet. Maybe they attempted to assist the Sith at some point?
2. Geneticist, or something comparable to a Combat Medic.
3. Unique force manipulator: battle meditation, force healing, force shielding, etc. Combat-capable, yet highly valuable for their assisting abilities.
Cliche, perhaps, but that's what I'm imagining at the moment, unless they allow player-controlled androids, though those could easily fit into the non-force related classes already.
