The real issue is that the game isn't very good.  Combat is lame, the community is tiny, and our freedom has been taken away.  This game is no different than any other themepark/restrictive MMO out there, aside from subtle freedoms remaining from Pre-CU.
I can't possibly fathom how someone can have fun playing SWG for more than a day.  It boggles my mind.  The grind is horrible, the bugs are annoying, the combat is beyond repair, and the game BARELY resembles something Star Wars.
It's easy to blame the "vets" of this game for the lack of population.  However, it's far more accurate to blame the poor mechanics and systems of the game for the lack of players on the servers.  If the majority of people thought Star Wars Galaxies was any fun at all, they would play.  Even with the Station Pass SOE can't get anyone to play this game.

SWG was unique and today with all the changes even with all the optimism in the world.. it STILL IS A WoW clone!

As a vet id say, SWG broke my heart and I'm afraid it'll do it again. After that being said. I'm also checking in now and then to see if the feeling is back. Got a couple new good friends but 3-400 on my old friend list is still offline.

    Wumi - SWG - Bloodfin - Cancelled
    Wumi - WoW - Eu-Kazzak - Cancelled
    Bulldozer - Aion - Eu-Kahrun - Cancelled
    Wumi - Rift - EU-Riptalon - Cancelled

All you vets should really try the game again. It really is a lot better than it was before. Maybe not quite as good as Pre-cu, but it is very good, and better than all of the other trash themepark mmos that keep coming out every year and always disappoint.

So if this game is so awesome, why don't more people play?

There are millions and millions of players who were not around to experience the nge and a large chunk of them are looking for a new game.  Why are they not playing?  Why are they not being marketed to?

I think the changes to the game the last 4 years have shown that people are not coming back. If people were going to come back they would have already.  The fact that the game is merging servers and people are spot lighting the TWO servers with decent population... again... says the game isn't attracting new players from a pool of millions.

So again I say, if the game was so great, better than the rest of the market as you put it, then it would sell itself and more people would play.

Thank you for your opinions though.

Well SOE can do all they can not to lose the fight agaist Bioware, but Biowares KOTOR will still win. The only way that SOE can win in the future is to fire all employes and change their name then start looking more at what the community says. And also when making a mmo from a movie they should hire entusiasts that love it, not people who just want to make money.

First off, I am not a bitter veteran, but the game cannot be better than ever because you are stil typecast in a class/level stigma with your character.  Sure they have improved many areas, I still play the game, I do space engagements on the weekends is about all.

The best thing about the old game, if I grew tired of my character, I could just change his skillset.  Now I have no choice in this area at all.

So as long as they have the class/level restrictions, they can never make this game better than it was.

Of course SWTOR will get more people the SWG as its a new game with updated graphics and hopefully some fresh ideas in gameplay as well. But  some people really need ot bury the dead and move on.

Then NGE came along and took a lot of what the players loved away from the game, and as we all know this caused a mass exodus away from the game. I personally hated the changes, but I still loved the game. I chose to leave once so many of my friends had gone. A couple years later i came back for a little stint in the game that lasted 2 or 3 months. Once again I left. The game lacked content at the time. Two weeks ago I came back to the game for a second time... And this time I'm amazed. I've been having a blast in the game, and I've never had this much fun since i first started playing back in 2003. SOE has added a lot of great content to the game since i last played. They added heroics to the game which are the new group instances. These instances are relatively easy, but they're all quite fun, and are very rewarding to complete. Furthermore SOE also added battlefields to the game recently. Battlefields have some flaws, but they make getting into the action of PvP much easier, and there are also some really cool rewards that you can earn from battlefields.
The trading card game was also added since I left. I have mixed feelings on this subject. I personally really enjoy the trading card game, and i'm  one of the few players who actually play it. On the other hand I dislike how SOE added SO MUCH awesome content to the game, but they put it all through the card game instead of giving it to crafters... but that is business... The trading card game is actually quite well done though, and if you like that kind of thing you should definitely try it out.
I believe this month every account gets a free month of SWG including those that haven't been active in years, so this is a great oppurtunity for you vets to try the game again . I was skeptical when I came back 2 weeks ago, but I've been having a blast and there is no way I regret it.

Please try to use other style. Since the wysiwig editor is somewhat broken, use the code editor. Avoid adding a billion colors.

In Firefox, it looks just fine.  Four colors.  But I think they paint an accurate picture.

I'm sorry, but I disagree with the OP on every point.

The game is a hollow shell compared to the pre-NGE game.

I did.  There is a handful of servers that have a serviceable population (about 7 of them).  Tarquinas had seven people on it the first time I logged in.  It jumped all the way up to 12 the second time.

I am impressed by some of the additions to the game since the last vet trial.  I don't understand how we ever were able to play the game prior to the ability to target things through walls, while still not being able to attack.  The aggressive MOBs can still attack you through said walls, but now you can target them, and any items, without the ability to shoot back.  I am also impressed that the 'You can't attack that MOB that is standing right in front of you shooting you' feature is still around.  Nothing gives the impression of a polished product like glaringly annoying bugs hitched up to the most horrendous combat system ever implemented in an MMO.

I keep saying it. I love this game. I played pre-cu  pre-nge.....I hated it. I have been playing a couple of months now. I love it! its been a blast. the other night I was a gunner in a gun ship and had sooo much fun!!

I can understand why some people.....the Pre NGE vets... have issues with the game now. Things changed in EvE all the time since beta. alot of the cool things about EvE changed....hard to go solo ganking now. but I still love the game.

I think the vets feel betrayed because they lost their uberness. but I must say I have never seen a more bitter bunch! you all have become the laughing stock of this site!

I am sure what you say about some vets is "true" but for many others, like me, it isn't. Glad you like the current SWG, too bad you didn't like the old SWG, many, many more people did.

I am not a critic of SOE and the current game because i lost my "uberness", as you put it, but everything that was taken from the game the majority of people (who ever played SWG) liked better than the current bells and whistles, many of which don't even work correctly. I am a critic of SOE's handling of SWG bucause of what the game currently is and how it became that way.

Know how much I miss my "uberness"? I gave away my trader acc, a year and some back, with 4 billion (yes, with a "b") and an extra elder jedi slot. With 25% of those credits you could buy the best stuff in game several times over and be "uber" in the current game. That isn't the point. The point is who cares about being the "best" at anything in a bad game, or one that the most ardent supporter can not deny is in decline. The best (and the most functional) parts of the current game (and ones that supporters point to) are left over from the old days (namely crafting and space). Most things that have been "added" by the various devs since then, are neither as good, or work as well. What does that say?

I had a heck of lot more fun being an "average" player in a great game, than being a "powerful" player in a relatively shallow, linear, "iconic" game that SWG has become.

I played the trial for 3 days, and lost a couple of IQ points in the process. I accepted the fact that Intrepid was dead, and simply engaged in the various PvE options available to me as one of the only 2 players on the server. The pandering was ungodly. They literally took everything remotely considered Star Wars, threw it in a blender and just crammed it down my throat. I think I looted a Jar Jar Pez dispenser off a Meatlump. It got to the point where I expected to see a small picture of George Lucas himself pop up in the bottom right of my screen with a little word balloon - "Remember, it's Star Wars!" No rhyme or reason to any of it. It was like living inside a commercial.

In combat, my enemies kept slowly walking through me, which would cause me to lose target. Or they'd go through a wall and shoot me from the other side. The quests all blended together. It didn't matter if I had to kill Ragtags, spiders, nunas, or what - kill 10, then 2 of the middle bosses, then the final boss, then return.

I think the most egregious failure of SOE's transformation of the game into this, though, was the failure to make me feel like a hero. That's what this whole thing was supposed to do - make you heroic. They added content, which most people can admit was sorely lacking from the original release, but the trade-off wasn't worth it. I didn't feel like a hero. I felt like a scrub. I always had someone telling me what to do, where to go, or I couldn't advance in the game. Heroes don't have that. To a true hero, it's intuitive as to what needs to be done. In the original game, it was up to me if I wanted to be a hero or not. It wasn't expected of me. Too many people complained that the original game was like a "job". If so, at least you were your own boss. In this game, you are the french fry cooker hoping to do enough for your manager that he'll promote you to the grill. I wasn't helping anyone, I was just doing what they told me. There was no conscious thought necessary at all.

Having played both every incarnation of the game - pre-CU, CU, NGE, and whatever it is now, I can say with certainty that SWG is NOT better than ever.  It has been much worse than it is now, but it's not even 50% of its best.  NOT counting removing skills for levels, NOT counting destroying the player economy, NOT counting going from crafted-based to loot-based, JUST based on combat, quests, ambience, and player experience.  What a horrible, horrible game.

But you sure can piss off most of 200k with one "patch". And have so many quit and trying to quit that it crashes the acct server.

    SOE ably demonstrated that one.

Those few people SOE seems to be able to make happy with SWG, are growing fewer each week, plenty of threads about that on the o-boards. That being the current state of the current game. Seems that the de facto server merges were less than successful, with people on several destination servers wanting the free ride off. Oh, wait, they must be do that to search for the Gold you mentioned. /not

Only a matter of time until SWG gets the MxO treatment.

But its like I said one mans trash is another mans gold. you can't make everyone happy....obviously

/not

Only a matter of time until SWG gets the MxO treatment.

hmmm I think your wrong about the subscriptions going down. I see new people every day logging in. I hate to say it guys but this game is a success, its not going anywhere.  they keep making money off of it.

Just because you hate it and quit along with the other 200k people that did doesn't make it a failure.

I can say with out a doubt Sony and Lucas arts would have droped this like a bad date if it was failing. how long ago did the NGE patch drop? how long has it been going? 6 years? and still going? think about it......

I think SWG is doing fine too, but you have to be a little more understanding of the people who were not able to recover after the NGE.

I went through a similar experience with UO many years ago when the game moved to loot based items from crafter based, I left the game and have not been able to pick it up since, despite returning on a veteran trial it just wasn't the game I remembered.

The NGE was the most traumatic experience in gamer history that I can think of, I certainly don't blame anyone for still harbouring a grudge.  I don't think I ever got over it myself, the anger I had from that day still drives me on to make sure it never happens again.
