For those of us familiar with mmos 1-20 might be a little tedious, we don't really need those tutorial levels anymore. They also need to cater to people who have never touched this type of game before, I imagine striking a balance wouldn't be the easiest.

Levelling up through PvE with Aion is pretty much what you get in most MMOs these days. If you had read comments from people, you would probably know that on the PvE front this game offers very little fresh ideas. It is more like hybrid between EQ/WoW.
I stopped playeing after 3rd beta weekend (only one I tried) because I knew that I would not like to do the relative boring early content again. I do not like early levels in most MMOs.

Well, in that case i'm sorry about my response, i just entered to the beta and i thought the toons were deleted after each one. He doesnt specify he was using the same toon. But either way, frm what i understand this beta is not using the release version of the game, and 1.5 will bring alot of new aditions

To sum up OP's thoughts, Aion is a boring MMO because:
-The primary function and skills of a CLERIC in the game center around (*gasp*... brace yourself!) HEALING!!! (total shocker, I know)
-There are some quests that require grouping, and considering some of the rift ganks squads and the mobs, grouping is a good idea. ["WTF! Impossible!!!" you say? I know, I know. The most unheard of thing you've EVER encountered about an MMO, right? I just mean.... grouping? .... in MMO's...? Insanity! ... especially when you're a healing class that typically levels a bit slower than the other classes until 35+, when you start to motor along precisely because you are a class that people need in their parties....]
-Now that the starter areas are done and their quick blink of an eye leveling is behind us, here's the worst part: it takes time to progress. OMFG! Shut up!!! But, yes. Get this... in an MMO, the devs actually made it take awhile to gain levels... Crazy, I know. Why they didn't let us level up for picking our nose or standing around spamming naughty words, I'll never know...

Another option would be to reduce the amount of xp that tanks and healers need to level, since they are not as well suited to great majority of quests offered.

This is my problem with Aion, and with mmo's in general to be honest. Why does it 'start at level 20?' This implies that levels 1 - 19 are not fun, only existing as some kind of gating procedure that must be slogged through in order to get to the real game.
Why not make the game start at level 1, and god forbid, make the fun start there as well? I know the answer, its called dangling the subscription carrot, and its tiresome.
I'm in the same boat as the OP, only I'm not a cleric. This game is more of the same, and it will hold my attention for the free month, if that.
Its called paying your dues, and almost everything in life requires you to do it, not just games.
You could also look at it as the time you spend learning how to play your character effectively.

No one in his right mind would defend a movie which is dead boring for the first 1/2 hr with a "pay the dues" argument - "you know it has to be bad for the first 1/2 hour so you can get the sense of accomplishment from not leaving the theatre in disgust". And you'll learn your character's abilities and capabilities much better and faster in a varied and challenging environment. I don't need to kill 2000 mobs to learn what my 3 skills do. And besides if the endgame is PvP-based then what is the point in "learning" via PvE? If I want to compete in football I'm not going to "start learning" with baseball. That's completely ridiculous and in fact I'd probably learn all the wrong moves that I'd have to unlearn later. It's like when you start training karate and switch over to judo - you have to actively unlearn the old reflexes which makes learning the new skill harder rather than easier.
You can't compare MMO's with passive entertainment mediums such as movies. Of course there's no learning curve (though if one wants to truly enjoy opera you need to pay your dues and learn Italian.)
MMO's are more like competitive games like team sports or even bowling, where its necessary to learn the rules of the game, practice playing it for a bit, and sometimes, waiting your turn for the right moment to "win it all".
Even if you want to play poker, you have to learn what your doing and pay your dues. Even if you are great at Texas hold em you won't be on ESPN2 any time soon until you pay your dues and work your way up in the rankings and are deemed worthy to play in the big leagues.
So lets compare them to other games then. Interactive entertainment as you put it. Hell lets compare them to other RPGs. I have to say, Mass Effect for example was fun from lvl 1. So was The Witcher. And Vampire Bloodlines. And Kotor. And Fallout. And and and...They may have had learning curves but they made sure it was a fun process. AION doesn't apparently by your own admission (my admission is that the game is simply boring no matter your level).
And since I'm sure you're going to backtrack now and say "Aha! None of those are MMO-RPGs" I'll simply point out that Champions Online has been fun from lvl 1. As have been lots of other MMOs but that's a bit of a list not worth typing right now.

No it's not. its true there are games that don't require you to pay your dues (i've never played one) and perhaps sinlge player games don't "suffer" from this same mechanic.
But it is also true that some games do require a player to go through this, and that some players like myself are willing to go through it (for heavens's sake, I've played EVE for 2+years, and you always pay your dues there) and if you don't want to put up with it, you are free to go play a game like Champions Online.
We all don't have to like the same games, nor like them for the same reason.

One of the funny things I heard someone said. "Does anyone else think it takes forever to level in this game?" I started LOL I thought it was easy to level in the game compared to other games where Ive put more hours in and only gained a few levels. Were as I'm level 7 already in Aion and I really haven't played all that much.
I was hoping leveling would be a bit slower in Aion right off the but oh well Im sure the levels will drag on soon.
I wount even touch tis asian grinder. its NCSOFT game and its from asia=grinding+gold sellers. Just overhyped, will fail like AoC, WAR,L2. But again there is always stypid people who want learn mistakes hardway. Dont matter what i say. u will see it after 1 month from retail.

And, RE: your point about tanks and healers needing less xp. Look, my earlier sarcasm centers around this point: YOU ARE PLAYING A CLASS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR TEAMWORK! If the leveling solo is too slow, or you can't complete certain quests because you are NOT WILLING to play your class in its traditional role, fine. Your choices are clear: roll a different, more solo friendly class or don't finish that quest. Wanting the whole class to change so that YOU can play it a way that is actually opposite of what its strengths are is crazy. Maybe you want your cleric to swat a fly and gather a level, but I want mine to find a group and do his healing thing and lvl that way because that's what his class is destined for....
Your suggestion stands opposite to the very design of clerics/tanks. If there were a job description for healers and tanks, at the very top it would say "must play well with others." To axe that concept because a small minority wants healers to be godly and tanks to never need anybody is short-sighted. After all, I sure get tired of swinging swords around when I play a melee class. It's so boring and not exactly fair (or smart) that SOME classes can't use magic like others can. So, I say give melees all the mana and spell casting abilities of a sorc.... and you know why? Because I don't care about balance or classes/jobs having any bearing on other players in the MMO that I am playing.
No, it's a single-player online themepark for me me me. Make clerics uber, tanks get xp for farting, no starter quests or tutorial stuff.... just throw us to the wolves, but we'll be so freaking powerful and godly it won't matter. Yeah, sounds real fun. No challenge, no grouping, and "classes" that are really jacks of all trades and make the very notion of "classes"/jobs pointless....

Well, the levelling speed at early levels does not mean that the rest of the game will be the same. Play Lineage 2 to get a good example of this. Compare first 10 levels to the following 10 levels and there onwards.
However, combination of added solo, group and raid content, I do not think you have to grind that much in this game when it launches with 1.5. patch. It will have a lot more playable content than vanilla WoW had at the release.
However, if you skip all the group content, you might have to solo grind mobs quite a bit.

You probably got bored because you played this kind of game many times already. I got the same problem, played until level 20 and then my interest dropped and i just stopped.
A shame really, i actually remember another game where i had the same problem, called WAR.
BTW you aren't alone on this, allot of people on aionsource for example say that they are already burned out.
To the OP: MMOs shouldnt be completely soloable. And of cousre you are bored. One day in and you are already level 20! What did you expect? You burned it out far too quickly. It takes me a few weeks to get level 20 in most games. Take your time, meet people, enjoy the content, take breaks and do other things with your time.
That being said I quit at level 2 lol. Only because I realized its the exact same stuff ive been playing for years, and thats just not my cup of tea.

As someone else said in this thread, he didn't hit that level in 1 day. All the beta weekend characters carry over, even from the first weekend.
I am also level 20, and bored. They really did this whole promo weekend thing wrong. They should've given everyone pre-made 20's or 25's and let everyone see what the game has to offer. As it stands now, I've been standing around LFG @ level 20 for about an hour. This sucked about the last two weekends too. Give everyone level 25 toons so there are people to PLAY WITH / PVP with. It's a damn preview weekend, not live... Stop making people invest time in grinding. I already had 5 people in a long-time guild get sick of this game already because of this crap on these past two weekends, and they aren't even playing this weekend.
I remember that 'regular' beta testers didn't get to see Warhammer's end game content. The Elder testers (who were subject to their own NDA which lasted past release) got to see it, but weren't allowed to talk about it. Now we know why.
My point is that if the beta is set up to prevent some content from being seen - there is usually a good reason for it. It is likely garbage.
Less time in PvP means less chance to find flaws. Beta testers are guinea pigs - being tested, rather than doing testing.

I dont know why but this game just got utterly boring all of a sudden. Starting to feel forced into groups now otherwise soloing is just too painful. CB4 I got into a group healing and it was alright, the loot was not bad.. but I seriously cant stand this asian garbage no more. Which is starting to feel very much like a heavy grinder.. Combat is so slow and boring I can't stand it.. As a cleric I have 2 main offensive abilities that chain into special attacks every 15-30 seconds or so... I mean seriously im 20 levels in and Im attacking with the exact same crap as level 5.. There is other spells and a few buffs that have been given over 20 levels I just dont see why theres all this hype around this game anymore to anyone post lvl 20.
Im actually only posting this now because I read a few posts on here that said the game opens up at level 20.. Im not sure what they meant but the game feels just like the the first 20 levels just with some new scenery..

I did part of 17, dinged 18 and mostly to 19 in a long evening's play session. I have a lot of quests that I haven't done and don't anticipate being at 19 for very long.

In that case I dont blame you for getting bored OP. You can tell from the first few levels that almost every single mechanic in the game aside from flying is the exact same as every MMO in the past 5 years.

from the description OP gave us - the game feels just like lineage 2 at the start.

First of all, you chose to play a Cleric. If you read the Cleric's description, it is the main healer class. This is a game that starts at level 20, not at max level. If you pick a healing class, expect to be healing and not DPSing or Tanking, that's just how it is. I know it's difficult, but use your brain. You won't be healing the mobs to death, so more than likely that is why you feel forced into grouping.
You know, I agree with this. I've tried just about all the classes and the cleric was extremely hard for me to stay focused on.
well, at least for 10 levels. Clerics are healers. They can solo very well but it's a group class. Of course, I say that with very limited experience in the scope of things. I'm sure there are higher lvl clerics who might be able to give a better opinion.

Were as I'm level 7 already in Aion and I really haven't played all that much.
I was hoping leveling would be a bit slower in Aion right off the but oh well Im sure the levels will drag on soon.

And, RE: your point about tanks and healers needing less xp. Look, my earlier sarcasm centers around this point: YOU ARE PLAYING A CLASS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR TEAMWORK! If the leveling solo is too slow, or you can't complete certain quests because you are NOT WILLING to play your class in its traditional role, fine. Your choices are clear: roll a different, more solo friendly class or don't finish that quest. Wanting the whole class to change so that YOU can play it a way that is actually opposite of what its strengths are is crazy. Maybe you want your cleric to swat a fly and gather a level, but I want mine to find a group and do his healing thing and lvl that way because that's what his class is destined for....
Your suggestion stands opposite to the very design of clerics/tanks. If there were a job description for healers and tanks, at the very top it would say "must play well with others." To axe that concept because a small minority wants healers to be godly and tanks to never need anybody is short-sighted. After all, I sure get tired of swinging swords around when I play a melee class. It's so boring and not exactly fair (or smart) that SOME classes can't use magic like others can. So, I say give melees all the mana and spell casting abilities of a sorc.... and you know why? Because I don't care about balance or classes/jobs having any bearing on other players in the MMO that I am playing.
No, it's a single-player online themepark for me me me. Make clerics uber, tanks get xp for farting, no starter quests or tutorial stuff.... just throw us to the wolves, but we'll be so freaking powerful and godly it won't matter. Yeah, sounds real fun. No challenge, no grouping, and "classes" that are really jacks of all trades and make the very notion of "classes"/jobs pointless....
Now *that* is what I call boring.
Well, the levelling speed at early levels does not mean that the rest of the game will be the same. Play Lineage 2 to get a good example of this. Compare first 10 levels to the following 10 levels and there onwards.
However, combination of added solo, group and raid content, I do not think you have to grind that much in this game when it launches with 1.5. patch. It will have a lot more playable content than vanilla WoW had at the release.
However, if you skip all the group content, you might have to solo grind mobs quite a bit.

You probably got bored because you played this kind of game many times already. I got the same problem, played until level 20 and then my interest dropped and i just stopped.
A shame really, i actually remember another game where i had the same problem, called WAR.
BTW you aren't alone on this, allot of people on aionsource for example say that they are already burned out.
I'm out too. Which is a shame because the game looks nice, but I just hit a boredom wall.
Perhaps taking a break from the genre as a whole would ignite it at a later date.
There's so many companies shoving so many shit MMORPG's in our face at the moment a lot of us are bound to get tired.
To the OP: MMOs shouldnt be completely soloable. And of cousre you are bored. One day in and you are already level 20! What did you expect? You burned it out far too quickly. It takes me a few weeks to get level 20 in most games. Take your time, meet people, enjoy the content, take breaks and do other things with your time.
That being said I quit at level 2 lol. Only because I realized its the exact same stuff ive been playing for years, and thats just not my cup of tea.

Real life brings repetition and pointlessness too. The only thing real life offers is Great graphics. Its kinda expensive too and way to dependent on the cash shop. Totally pay to win as well. No thank you. Ill stick to my games.
This is my problem with Aion, and with mmo's in general to be honest. Why does it 'start at level 20?' This implies that levels 1 - 19 are not fun, only existing as some kind of gating procedure that must be slogged through in order to get to the real game.
Why not make the game start at level 1, and god forbid, make the fun start there as well? I know the answer, its called dangling the subscription carrot, and its tiresome.
I'm in the same boat as the OP, only I'm not a cleric. This game is more of the same, and it will hold my attention for the free month, if that.
Its called paying your dues, and almost everything in life requires you to do it, not just games.
You could also look at it as the time you spend learning how to play your character effectively.
20 levels isn't much of a price to pay if the game really picks up from there, and you are supposed to actually enjoy learning to play your character, learning the lore, and questing a bit.
This "paying your dues" argument is ridiculous. The only thing a boring first 20-25 levels is going to achieve is lost customers, that's it.
As someone else said in this thread, he didn't hit that level in 1 day. All the beta weekend characters carry over, even from the first weekend.
I remember that 'regular' beta testers didn't get to see Warhammer's end game content. The Elder testers (who were subject to their own NDA which lasted past release) got to see it, but weren't allowed to talk about it. Now we know why.
My point is that if the beta is set up to prevent some content from being seen - there is usually a good reason for it. It is likely garbage.
Less time in PvP means less chance to find flaws. Beta testers are guinea pigs - being tested, rather than doing testing.

I did part of 17, dinged 18 and mostly to 19 in a long evening's play session. I have a lot of quests that I haven't done and don't anticipate being at 19 for very long.
i just don't know what easy games you are playing to say that 1-20 feels like a grinder. I played Lineage 2 when it came out and it took almost a week to get to 20. That has changed now but then it was a huge battle to get lvls and money.

In that case I dont blame you for getting bored OP. You can tell from the first few levels that almost every single mechanic in the game aside from flying is the exact same as every MMO in the past 5 years.

'This is a game that starts at level 20, not at max level. If you pick a healing class, expect to be healing and not DPSing or Tanking, that's just how it is.
I know it's difficult, but use your brain. You won't be healing the mobs to death, so more than likely that is why you feel forced into grouping.'

from the description OP gave us - the game feels just like lineage 2 at the start.
however since i read these foolish answers that actually agree with devs forcing players to do shit...
its no wonder devs did what they did - if there are fools then there will always be people who fool them.

You know, I agree with this. I've tried just about all the classes and the cleric was extremely hard for me to stay focused on.
well, at least for 10 levels. Clerics are healers. They can solo very well but it's a group class. Of course, I say that with very limited experience in the scope of things. I'm sure there are higher lvl clerics who might be able to give a better opinion.
