Final Fantasy XIV 'Famitsu Wave' Interview Pours Information

Source= http://scrawlfx.com/2009/08/final-fantasy-xiv-famitsu-wave-interview-pours-information

The September 2009 edition of Famitsu Wave has released in Japan sporting a DVD containing an eight-minute segment on Final Fantasy XIV. A lot of new information has come out of the DVD and we've got it for you.

Eorza is the name of a region that's the main setting of the game and as a full world, Vana'diel (from Final Fantasy XI) is naturally a little bigger. The actual world the game takes place in is called Haiderin. The style of Haiderin will be different from Vana'diel, aiming for a "high-fantasy" style setting. They want the setting to be more modern in comparison to Final Fantasy XI's more middle-age setting. There will be advanced technology in the world, as you've clearly seen from the skyships in the trailer.

The races in Final Fantasy XIV will bring on a familiar look. However, the races of Final Fantasy XI are being reimagined. The Galka-looking character you've seen in the trailer, will not be called a Galka, but something else. Other changes will be in order as well.

Final Fantasy XIV revolves around character growth. There will be no experience points or leveling system this time around, and a new system will come in to play. Square Enix wants to deliver an experience where new players have the freedom to try out any quest and many different things, growing naturally from their experiences. A deep story will be in tact in Final Fantasy XIV, including cut-scenes, but they're going beyond that by also delivering a wider variety of stories and quests. They want players to enjoy the process of character growth.

Jobs were the lasting appeal of Final Fantasy XI. They want to utilize that concept, but stack more on top of it. The focus will be on weapons, determining how you play, grow, and fight. They'll be expanding upon the basic job system. He says this also explains the Final Fantasy XIV logo, which features weapons sticking out of the name.

The main idea for Final Fantasy XIV is to provide freedom of growth through the variety of quests offered. However, players can meet up with friends and set off on adventure or they can play solo. Players won't be left with nothing to do, bored.

Square Enix is considering large scale battles, however, regular battles will be against single enemies. During quests you can gather parties and fight against multiple foes.

The game's music is going to be composed entirely by Uematsu.

"This will be a Final Fantasy that brings the setting to a whole new world that you can experience with the new friends you will meet." Nobuaki Komoto, director of Final Fantasy XIV said. "I welcome you to join us in the world of Final Fantasy XIV and hope you enjoy your time there."

"You can trust that we plan to create a world of new possibilities that redefine the MMO. I hope you're looking forward to everything we have in store."

According to Square Enix, there's a secret message hidden in the trailer. Finally, you can watch the actual interview below.

''The focus here will be on weapons.''  ''Your weapon will determine how you play'' ''Your weapon will determine how you grow'' ''There will be no experience points or level system.''

Very interesting. Seems like Square-Enix might have some innovative tricks up their sleeves. Maybe they are really trying hard to find a solution to close the population separation from levels and implement an entirely new system that compliments casuals and hardcore gamers, and even finding a way where they can co-exist in actually playing together.

Excellent news to hear from a video interview even though most of it has been said in other text interviews before!

    "What level are you?"

    "My character doesn't have levels."

"Uh huh. What level is your sword?"

"Oh, my sword is on upgrade 37."

The real Question is will a lvl 37 sword be able to play with a lvl 5 sword?

If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.

Better yet, will level 37 swords refuse to party with level 37 bows?

This is very exciting news to ME. Not sure what everyone else things but no leveling up in a traditional sense it's great news... even if it still has the staff/bow/sword increase. That's still cool. They're still sticking to the core while adding new things to push the boundries a little more.

    Gah I don't want to wait :(

I really hate to say this but there will be (obviously) some botters and macros that will enable you to level faster. After all, there are always cheaters in MMOs but if there is no experience system, the cheaters might make programs to 'level' your weapon faster. You all know this but I just wanted to point it out.

From what I remember of FF11 (been awhile since i played) there was very little Gold/Gil Spamming in chat channles and there was none to almost none, Addons to Down load (compared to other mmos these days) . But FF14 will be a new gen mmo so only time will tell.

Wow... just wow.. post by someone who obviously has no clue what they are talking about.

FFXI no gil seller spamming? are you freaking kidding me? you are lucky to not get a message from a Gil seller every 5 minutes. I am online right now and looking at my tell log i have about 5 Gil seller messages from past hour or so, so yeah.

And no addons to download? What planet are you living on? Final Fantasy XI   is one of the worst if not THE worst MMO for downloading updates. You will be waiting anything fromn 5 hours to 24 hours to update before you can even play for the first time. (probably even longer now it has 2-3 download only expansions that you 'have' to download even if you have not bought them) .

Honestly, Final Fantasy XI has the worst rep of all mmos for its initial update time before you play, and you are saying it is non excistant??

I am starting to wonder if you really even played FFXI.

You misunderstood him. No addons mean you don't have to search for things like Tomtom, Recounts, Deadly Boss mob, Omen... whatever to play your game. Many games lately become too depend on that kind of stuffs.

Here. I changed the color of what you clearly missed.

Way back in the day it wasent bad at all. It got a lot worse.

No, no... he really did play.  Its only a question as to when.  He said it had been a while.  It wasn't until about 4 years ago that I noticed gil sellers, despite them taking advantage of the AH for gil selling purposes.  As for Addons, he's probably referring to things like Windower, which I didn't know about until a year ago and I still don't use.

As far as the patching goes, its not the worst.  Most MMOs have long patch times, most are slightly more forgiving though.  If you install WoW fresh OOB, it'll take you around that time to update it.  As for patching FFXI, it only takes about 1-2 hours to do so.  Which is a tolerable amount of time.  Square has a tendency to change a lot with each of their patches.  To me, each FFXI patch feels more expansive than most MMOs since each patch adds new content in addition to tweaks.

As far as the interview, that's awesome.  Though the system seems vaguely similar to the original Star Wars Galaxy system where you level your skills rather than your actual level.  It worked well, no one really asked "what's your skill with X weapon" things just naturally occurred.  You'd look for a party in town then head out with the party.  I think that things may be a little different in FFXIV since they probably will have some sort of a weapon leveling rather than just 4 tiers of skill.

Not to sound trollish but I am confused by this concept.   For me, a game has to start with my character being relatively weak, poor gear, etc. and slowly but steadily becoming more uber.    I'm all for innovative ideas but instead of me, my weapon becomes uber?    Not sure how this is gonna work out.

Not necessarily you weapon becoming uber, your skill just grows higher.

For example, you could start with a skill level 1 sword that deals +6 damage.  At sword skill 10 you can upgrade to a new sword that deals +11 damage.

I think that's more the concept they're going for rather than sticking with one weapon throughout the course of the game.

    /fanboy on

I can't wait for this game.  I was a FFXI addict, and now it looks like SE is delivering with a new FF that meets some of my MMO criteria.  Sounds like this game is going to offer a lot of what I look for in MMOs.  I'm psyched.

I've been trying to figure this out myself. The only thing I have come up with, is the phrase shown, "under the eldritch veil of a crimson shadow"

Did some research and Crimson Shadow is actually referenced in FFX-2. Some type of gang. Here is the link to the wiki on it: http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Crimson_Shadow

Probably has nothing to do with the message but you never know with SE.

Who knows... anyways after I checked the video a few times... maybe the message has to do with something abot the spacific glowing words in the trailer, like Shadow, Hero, Clash, Destiny and Again.

Well maybe I was lucky I mite have gotten one spam an hour while playing. And at the time I was playing I personally did not know much about ADD-ONs for MMOs.I dont remember anyone in FF11 telling me Hey you should get this addon or that addon while I was playing (I found out about addons when I was intorduced to WoW),so I ASSUMED at the time there were no addons for it. and honestly Add-on and DL updates are two totally diff. things so the second paragraph you typed has no meaning or association with my statement.

    Umm.. who cares?

If this is more like FFXI than WAR or some other PvP game, I don't care if someone bots and levels "faster". What do I care that a RDM got to 75 while I'm still at level 40? If I'm doing PvE that makes no friggin difference. I didn't care if someone botted to max in a week in FFXI or used a powerleveling service if all they were doing was going to SEA/SKY or to kill any of the tons of PvE bosses. Why should I be jealous?

Botting to level faster doesn't affect my gameplay at all in this type of game. When I want to PvE, I play FFXI or Vanguard and I don't worry about someone "cheating" with programs since they can't beat bosses. When I play WAR, Guild Wars, or CTD4, then I'll care about someone "botting" and getting to max before me. This is not a PvP game.

See, this is why I hope they don't turn this into a PvP fest, so all these "keeping up with the Joneses" PvP people start complaining about someone killing them too many times and their epeen is shattered.

  • natuxatunatuxatu Member UncommonPosts: 1,364

Sorry bots are virtually if not every MMO. Using that as a vaild argument is really grasping for straws. Plus they will probably have better bot protection since it's a newer MMO and all that so yeah.. lets go on to the haters next complaint..

Focus on character development is extremely exciting. A lot of MMOs say that is the focus of their MMO but FFXIV is really going on and on about it making me believe that they are taking it to the next level which has me excited.
