Where are you located? I keep seeing this 'lack of players' claim, but have no trouble finding players to fight.
I live in Alfar land, and I mean all of Alfar land.
I live in the maternity ward of one of the most popular races and I see the lack of players every day. I'm accually amazed if there is a player at the spawn I want to grind. Yesterday I had a new record of players at the same spot the last two months. We were seven players at the same spot at Bel Melek bank. The reason was simple. They thought AV had implemented the 3 x skill gain to lessen the grind.
You know most of us Darkfallers absolutly abhor the huge and useless skillgrind.
Honestly I get excited about most new MMO releases. I will play Aion for the mid to end game PvP and RvR. However it is pretty much meaningless like an arcade game. You don't really have too much impact on the world besides wavering control over fortresses which are meant to change hands. There is some fun to be had there mid to late game. I love Darkfall because it is a sandbox where players impact the world directly. I think it has come a long way since launch honestly, and I think with the next expansion it will takes more steps in the right direction. My only main gripe is that the player housing isn't freely placed in the wilderness. Still I think it is a great game and it is pretty level now, but will start growing with the next couple expansions. I was also excited about WAR, AoC, SWG, FFXI, etc., etc. I always find my moneys worth and some fun in games, but there are rarely games that I return to and stick with for long periods of time. EVE, and Darkfall are 2 games I plan on playing for a while along with Aion for however long it entertains me. My guess is 2-5 months before I get bored. I doubt i'll go back after that because nothing really changes all that much. Maybe with expansions if it's good enough i'll play it for a bit, but I think Darkfall and EVE will continue on past that just like EVE has done for many years. Darkfall became jaded to me because of the business practices and some minor things, but I did enjoy the game. The stuff they are working on for the next expansion addresses some of the major problems I had with the game, and I feel like the devs ideas for where they want to take DF line up with a game that I will enjoy for a long time.
How exactly do DF players impact the world? The only impact I can see is they capture a village/town. What else can they change in the world? How is it different then capturing fortresses in Aion?
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
It is similar to EVE. There is a player driven political map where alliances are formed, territories staked out, and the world and 'factions' are created dynamically by players. You have the ability to build structures, houses, and fight for control over parts of the world.
Aion is more like a pre created # of fortresses for 2 pre-decided sides to fight over, and a PvE race that jumps in to keep things even and randomized. The fortresses are meant to change hands often and it is a good fun system, but in the end players really don't affect the world all that much or play that big of a role in politics or the lay of the land.

I've only ever been to Alfar lands during beta and once or twice to get to sieges. I was actually listening to two Alfars on vent yesterday saying they haven't been back to Alfar lands since they'd got involved in the clan scene.
There is a new patch coming that increases skill gains across the board when fighting in PvE. This has supposedly caused a lot of people to not login waiting on the patch.
I have been playing all week in human lands, and i've constantly seen people. I would say right now it is the perfect amount. Almost any quest or mob area I go to I run across 1-2 people. Every 30 minutes to an hour I come across some red mounting through, or they come across me. The towns are busy, and I know that out on the continents there are constant battles. The clan I am in is raiding 2-3 times a day in different sized groups.
This is all before the patch which I think will bring more people back to PvE areas, and the expansion in October. I think the population is pretty leveled off right now and will grow slowly over time if they keep up these expansions. It really is a fun sandbox right now that has a lot going for it. Unlike a themepark the game can grow in so many ways via systems instead of almost purely content.
Also I have played almost entirely during the morning and day, which is the opposite of peak times for NA.
These days, life in darkfall is not boring. I get to kill and die pretty much in every game session lol
I had one session yesterday where I killed no players and was killed by none. I even scared off a PK and revived 2 people. I found and opened 13 chaos chests, crafted 3k arrows, and finished about 4 quests. It was a lot of fun and one of the best solo MMO play sessions i've had in years.

Where abouts?
Well I started in Human Lands, scared away the PK by the Ghost Spiders to the South (I came riding in on my horse with my 2.5 1h sword skill and he ran away). I am skilling up archery and greatswords so my mounted combat is lacking. Then I finished the Sarlin(sp?), spider quest, the kill X spiders in 1 hour quest, a quest to retrieve this goddess's crown from some troll lords, and my harvesting title quest.
Then I got on my horse and travelled North past Orc lands, then NW to Dwarf lands, then S to Elf Lands exploring and found 13 chests on the trip. I only got 100g + some random pots and mats from each, but it was nice. I recalled to Human Lands and then I tried to raise my wisdom through harvesting plants to 30+ so I could get the Survivalist skill (increases length of time food lasts) so when I rode around searching for chests I could eat constantly and raise it. This was thanks to a tip from some friendly people in race chat. While harvesting I got 4 steedgrass in about an hour. It was a crazy good gaming session.
"Making things up"? That's a pretty serious allegation. Your own words I quoted say it all. If you like to elaborate, please do. It would be fun to see your interpretation of.... "Aventurine going belly-up is probably the best thing that could happen to DarkFall. DarkFall might stand a chance of getting picked up by a competent developer, and realize at least a portion of it's potential."
What games do you actually like? Perhaps that will give us insight on what you mean by a "competent developer". All the so called developers considered competent, like Blizzard, SoE and the like, merely put out easy to consume products. Nothing wrong with that, as many people love gentle games with no risk. -CC
China... Come on.
You seem to be a pretty intelligent person, and I think you know darn well the point he made by highlighting those two specific statements in red. It's pretty obvious. I think you're being deliberately obtuse here.
But just in case...
His point, as I read it, is that if AV goes under, that hopefully a "competent developer" - as in, one that would do DF justice by getting it closer to what it was hyped to be - would pick it up, correct the glaring issues and turn it into the game everyone's waited for all these years, and make it work.
He's not referring to a developer who would pick it up and try to turn it into a themepark game with PvP by consent only, etc.
Now, xyzax can correct me if I'm wrong here, but I'm pretty certain that's what he meant.
So and what do you think players where waiting for all these years then?
I can asure you that 90% player base TODAY (becouse most are from eather 2008/2009, want ezmode game ala themepark and devs from launchday and even before that already dumbdown the game so the whiners get there way.
I doub there are many real harcore pvpers left out there that could cope with real dreamgame vision devs had few years ago.
Universial banking lazertowers abandon lore plus making it so easy to macro/exploit/hack have ruined this game.
Now i hope they can fix most and survive to realise this aint the game we wanted 6 years ago.
Im still playing for 6 months now so im not a troll so back off:)

Unfortunately, that isnt whats going to happen when AV takes its dirt nap.
Darkfall will be considered a failure of a game. No developer is going to want to throw any money away on a failed game. Its a bad business strategy and that is what all development companies are at their core, a business.
Also, thanks to Darkfall's failure, its going to set sandbox open PvP games back in the eyes of competant developers. It will cause them to gravitate even further away from such style MMORPGS and remain on the mainstream track of level class themepark EQ clones which currently inundate the market. The new developement teams that have skill and potential will see Darkfall's failure (and soon enough, Mortal Online's) and believe it was the open PvP and sandbox world that drove players away, when it fact it was the ineptitude of the developement team that created the game that caused its down fall.
So, to all of those who are hoping to see open PvP sandbox games, I say, dont hold your breath. Because as long as these small, no name, no brain, companies keep trying, and failing, to make one, they are going to keep detering the larger, well funded and competant companies from making one.
But, when you think about it, how could anyone really expect a bunch of shooter junkies to make a good MMORPG?

You have alot of hate in your system bro, alot.
Darkfall is a good game, MO will perhaps be a good game in a year or two.
Chill out.
Enjoy your games.
Play AION beta, coming out on the 6th of September. Perhaps it will help you out man, at least psychologically. CO is coming out too, try that.

I have the right to enjoy Darkfall for what it offers. And you too have the right to dislike it based on real knowledge of the game, which im sure you have.

China...
No hate, just a lot of harsh truths. But, of course, it would appear as hate to a fanboi.

No of course not.
I have the right to enjoy Darkfall for what it offers. And you too have the right to dislike it based on real knowledge of the game, which im sure you have.
Best of luck to you Vaultbrain.
