@ gameslave: brings up many good points, but one stood out distinctly.

I remember one day my friend saying to me "hey we should all play Everquest so we can save up some money."

This was so true, we were car salesman in Honolulu, HI, and we would drink and hit clubs/drinky drinky bars/ strip clubs/ etc...

Dropping $100 bucks a night all the time is not fun.  So 4 of us started playing everquest for a few years and took a break from the vegas- sin city lifestyle and put some serious bucks back.  As well as had a damn good time playing EQ1.

I want to play xiv and save up some money again because weed is becoming too expensive XD

Anniversary or what they have in FFXI doesnt really matter.  Simple fact is microbilling is done by companies who make shit for game with no content no challenge and simple systems.  Anygame company that is worth their weight doesn't do Microbilling.  So I'm at a bit of a loss as to how this is some surprising turn of events by the subject..

What did you think they would do?

You can't just put all those companies in the same basket, some of them are of actual good quality, maybe you just didn't fall on one yet.

Yeah... I agree. There are some gems in the F2P market out there. I've played them and been very surprised at how well made they were. I didn't continue playing them because of the microtransaction model, but would have paid a subscription fee if they were set up like that.

I have not been reading a lot about FFXIV for one reason, FFXI was a complete mess imo...Don't get me wrong, I am not comparing both games, I am just saying that to me SE made a lot of bad choices in FFXI...I will be checking FFXIV closer to release.

The only comment I will make is that I hope you will not have to pay for each character slot you want, to me that is a very bad customer service practice.

In the past I would have agreed with you, but there are F2P games that are starting to emerge with P2P quality.  RoM has been compared numerous times to some of the top P2P games.  I personally like it better than many of the well known ones (such as Warhammer and Guild Wars).  We're even starting to see F2P games rated above a lot of the P2P games on this site (for whatever that's worth).  That's not to say they are the best or anything, but it does show us a trend toward higher quality F2P games.

RoM is the only exception to the F2P quality. Its good for a f2p, but its still not there yet.

P2P quality has been dropping. The recent P2P releases have been nothing but junk. I think Aion will be a high quality game and you will see that it is far ahead of RoM. (I have no intention of playing Aion) I think your general trend is p2p going to crap not F2p getting higher quality. RoM is the only exception. I have got to see more F2P games come out that are decent before I can say the the F2P market is gettiing better.

Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
    Now Playing: N/A
    Worst MMO: FFXIV
    Favorite MMO: FFXI

I agree with you on the character slot issue to a point, except for the fact that everything in FFXI was attainable on one character. As far as FFXI being a complete mess, this leads me to believe you haven't logged on the game in years. Level sync, field manuals, and the field of valor are exceptional improvements to the game and really solidify it.
