Although it won't break the game for me it can certainly help - that is lack of different looking gear, there is nothing worse for me when you reach a certain (higher) level and get a few cool items, return to your quest hub only to realise everyone else looks exactly the same.

I realise that of course we will see clones but some games have far too many! Need more visuals and items. WAR comes to mind and very dishonourable mention to AoC which repeated graphics that you got at lvl 1 on lvl 80 items!

I hate in EQ2 where you find yourself leveling on Crabs, Deer, Birds, beetles etc etc.

Then every 10 levels you move to the next zone and you see the same frigging mobs but 10 levels higher lol.

Found myself leveling on crabs for 20 levels.

Flatly, and for no real reason, I can't stand when I don't look cool. If my Armor/Attacks are lame looking then I just don't care. I don't know what it is, but Eye Candy is a big sale for me. (Probably because I'm not one for the numbers game. I love MMO's because their big persistant worlds where I can play a Character, I could care less if it was an RPG or a Shooter/Action Game.) Of course, some games are good enough to where I can ignore it. I can't stand the Animations in Guild Wars or WoW, but they're enough fun to keep me playing anyways.

I can list two illogical pet peeves that have kept me from trying games in the past.

    1. Pricing: I hate F2P and cash shops. Games with those revenue models rarely even come onto my radar.

    2. Population: If a game doesn't have a sizable player base, I usually don't even consider it. The exception to this rule are niche games which I would ignore if they had a large population.

My biggest pet peeve would be a major one and totally logical though. I will not play a game, no matter how fun, based on principle, if the company that makes it is crap. Example ATM being darkfail made by aventurine. Scammed the entire NA population, and more personally, tried to charge my friend after he canceled his account. When his CC company auto rejected the payment, they banned his account permanently, upon appealing the ban, they accused him of hacking.

Illogical would be any MMO that clearly shows it's just a cookie cutter of x MMO. I'll drop it and uninstall it as fast as I installed it.

    Pet peeves:

Camping a god damn mob for days/weeks on end ala ffxi

Heavy instancing, the immersion dies in rapid succession.

Lack of content updates for P2P MMOs, good example is Lotro, when they design/release content it doesn't last more than a few days, the actual experience of it, the grinding will last forever, that's how they get you. I guess I'm just at that point in my life where I don't feel like/can't stand raiding/grouping for the same god damn zones/instances 39042308 times.

Heavy grinding, it never used to bother me, but now I can't frickin stand it.

The same MMOs named 4 different frickin ways in 4 different countries and available in all areas. I mean wtf.

MMOs that call themselves sandboxes when there is no sandbox or very little part of the game.

Fan boys/Haters, damn if they do, damn if they don't.

Terribly laid out block sized ugly ass UIs. Can't stand shit that seems to feel the need to decorate your whole screen like a god damn border full of quick slots and skill slots. God damn, let me see the game keep that shit on the bottom.

Item mall F2P MMOs that clearly point out that if you don't use the mall you fall behind or never make it. Forcing you to use it if you want to stay in the game.

AAA MMOs that don't provide character customization, gone are the days of picking static models, let me make my char look what I want to! And not just 6 options of things bullshit either.

Lame combat, button smashing sprees can be fine if you have a wide variety of skills/actions. However the MMOs that give you 3 or 4 that you will ever use can kiss my ass.

Community, I can deal with stupid shit but when it is apparent that the majority of the community rather turn it into an orgy of stupidity, assholes, and apparently pimps and hoes. It's time to damn the game to hell and go on my way.

Some may find some of these illogical but to me it isn't.

    Few things:

    1) Click to move. Hate it, don't want it. If there is no way to change to my perference of AWSD-key movement, I'm out.

    2) Rigid UI. If I cannot (out of the box) just move every game window in the game around, I really start hating that ui.

    3) I really want the game to be run in windowed mode. Full screen is a pain with 2 monitors. In that note I also don't like rigid windowed mode resolutions (ala EvE).

Number one is a real "quit game before trying it fully" reason for me, number 2 and 3 is two reasons that may accelerate the dislike in a game.

I can't stand shoddy animations, particularly with regards to movement/strafing.  You know, some games you can go from running straight to running+strafing (making you run at an angle) smoothly, and then others you just instantly change direction.  Just as bad are games with poor transitions from spell to spell or skill to skill.  Just kills it for me, and it's definitely enough to make me not play some games.

Another pet peeve is character looks.  I really loved EQ2 when I started playing, but as the game went on, I was still wearing an identical piece of armor in a new color or shade.  Awesome that it had the appearance slots, but when your options are a blue robe, an identical black robe, or an identical red robe, it gets pretty stale.

    Mobs that don't fight 'naturally'.

If there are lions in the game, have them hunt like lions do - stalk, pounce, and maul. Don't have them stand off and melee like a humanoid NPC does. This has bothered me right from when I first started with PnP RPGs like D&D.

Don't have stupid mobs know things that they shouldn't. No animal could tell what a healer is doing (or even care). They should have a much simpler aggro mechanic than intelligent mobs.

One that swings to mind is a large range of gear graphics, I dont mean uber looking either, I just hate cookie cut charactors, worse game I ever saw for equipment looks was EQ2, some of the most half hearted repeated gear ever, in fact so much about EQ2 was just plain lazy and half hearted, but that is wandering off topic.

So I could of just typed I hate cookie cut charactors in MMO,s to be honest LOL.

  • BluefishBluefish Member UncommonPosts: 96

I'm sure I've got alot of these, but a couple spring to mind:

(these might apply more to left handers, or maybe just me)

In Wow, the key bindings for the numpad change depending on whether the numlock key is pressed or not. This is a nightmare for me as I use it alot and used to use the numlock key for autorun... I ended up popping the numlock key off my keyboards because of this, thanks Blizzard!

On a similar line, some games dont let you steer with the cursor keys whilst in chat mode. Crazy silliness. Wow, at least, doesnt do this, but many games do.

For example, for years, players were having fits about Guild Wars because they could not change their character appearances (NCSoft eventually had to implement a system). I have friends who have left games because of the music or a metaverse plot twist.

Personally, I find that I end up leaving games on which I can't get one of my three or four "stock" character names. Just doesn't feel like my toon.

What's the most illogical reason that you've quit or decided not to buy an MMO?

Lol, I lost all my pet dogs due to a crash in Lineage, I had a whole bunch i was going to sell. But honestly, I were probably quiting anyways since they started to charge for it the week after.

But something I hate is really stupid and loud npcs. Like in "City of heroes", there is an idiot standing and screaming help in every corner of the street. I mean most people being rob would just be quite and give away the wallet or run away but all these morons are doing is standing still. wawing arms and screaming. It is Louis Lane *10 000.

NPcs should at least either be quite or seems to do something that makes even a little bit of sense.

I hate, no I loathe, camping as in: "this here boss mob, and only this here boss mob, might, just might, honestly it just might, possibly, one day, drop the sword of ultimate doom (or the skimpy armour of blinding sexyness)"  Lets face it sitting in one spot and killing the same mob over and over again never gets fun especially not if you need to organize a full team or even a raid to kill it. (AO did this really well with insane respawn times that had you looking at an empty patch hours only to find the item you needed wouldn't drop...)

Not sure if this one has been mentioned yet (didn't read all the posts), but the number one that ticks me off like crazy is when NPCs/Mobs have an unfair advantage over my character in the game.

Like being able to shoot through hills without seeing you, or aggroing me when I couldn't possibly ever see them (neither could they see me), giving them access to spells of a much higher level than their own, etc.

When I run into that kind of stuff I immediately cancel. There's no fun in allowing NPCs/Mobs to cheat on the game mechanics and restricting me to obey them.

Or the one where they can run at full speed straight up the side of a cliff as you're trying to get away.

MOBS such as rats bats etc should drop the resource they are made from i.e. fur, meat, teeth, claw and so on which can then be used in crafting professions.
The ONLY MOBS that should drop coins, runes, swords, armor, guns etc should be Humanoid in nature. And whatever you see the Humanoid wearing/weilding should be what is dropped.

I'd have to say I agree with this.  This sucks 'cause I'm going to have to re-write my world drop code to filter by race.  It is kind of cheesy to drop an alligator and pull a bow, potion or "shiny sword of swords".

It would be worth it for the much greater immersion. I'd love to play a game where things actually made sense. You could use a clever mechanic from Warhammer - drop 'broken' gear which is repaired into something useful for the character's class. Uh huh - Warhammer does have some good ideas.

Oh, and for the sake of my sanity - no more grey vendor trash. All it does is take up bag space. Drop cash or nothing in place of it. Seriously, vendor trash should have been done away with as a gaming concept LONG ago.

Never really left a game because of this but it's the closest I can come up with for the topic. Mobs that drop loot that doesn't make any sense what-so-ever. This can be like animals that drop armor, weapons and gold. Also if a humanoid is whacking on me with a weapon or has on some cool looking armor it kind of makes sense that he'd have it on him after I kill him. This has always kinda irked me since my EQ days... In EQ if a mob had a visible weapon 90% of the time it would drop it after it died.

Edit: Ah... I see someone already posted this above... teach me not to read the thread first! LOL

Some of these are game breakers, some not:

"New" mobs that are old mobs with a new color.

False barriers, such as not being able to walk off a 6-inch ledge or not being able to jump over a pebble in the path or getting hung-up on invisible projections around landscape items.

New graphics expansions that are of a total different graphical style than the original game, especially if they are sewn into pre-existing areas.

Adding layers upon layers of treadmill complexity as "content."

Stupid names, as mentioned elsewhere on this thread.

Feeling like I can never catch up, no matter how much I play.

Asian-style graphics. Just don't like them.

Blind group and guild invites. No, I will not spend 20 minutes traveling to you just so I can port you to a city that would take you 10 minutes to run to.

Chat-circle gulids that never group or hold events of any type unless the "inner circle" needs help with something.

Retarded hostile mobs that sit there 25 feet away and watch you kill their ally.

I ask for so little. Just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave.

Got to be able to jump

  • Mine is bind on pickup.  I think that bop is really more of a symptom than a root cause, but I can't quite figure out if the root cause is forced raiding or linear theme park games because technically you could have one without the other.  Yet, those are the kinds of games that implement such systems and it blows.  I've always been completely amazed that the north american market, which lives in a capitalist society, prefers games that discourage trading.  Just completely mind-boggling to me.  I guess if I had to guess why (and this will be highly elitist), it's because those who are successful in life don't play mmos, and those who are successful and play mmos transfer that success to mmos.  Thus all the other regular joes fail at mmos just as they fail at real life and the dev has to give handouts to the regular joes to keep them playing.  Boy, I sure know how to annoy a lot of people...  :)

When I can't Esc thru the start up ads for the company, the game, the publisher, nvidia, intel and so on.. Hate having to watch that a million times over.

Character selection graphics and background.. It's the first impression and sets the tone of the game for me. If it looks like something I can draw, then I'll probably not play it.

    Point and click movement.

Don't care how good a game is, if it has point and click I will not even look at it.

Oddly enough, Diablo is the exception to this.

Are there any games which require click-to-move? Any which offer it that I have seen have it as an option.

Also: I think I detect a 'Valkyrie Profile' fan. Correct?
