Aion is a lot more of a high fantasy game.  Aion has no fear of straying from the norm and doing odd things (flying manta rays anyone?).  LoTRO must adhere to Tolkiens written universe.  LoTRO is definitely more of a 'grounded' fantasy game.
I feel that LoTRO is more about the world you are in, Aion is more about the character you are playing.
I like both, they each have their strengths and weaknesses.  I am currently playing Aion because I love awesome looking weapons and armor, which Aion has in spades.

    Like this.

Couldn't of said it better myself.

LoTRO is more a "realistic" game. So the actual environment needs to be better detailed (Which it is).

Aion is more "stylized". The environments look nice, but less detailed (read less resolution to textures).

To those that say gameplay over graphics, that's all well and fine. Many people deem Aion to be a graphic powerhouse. I think that is the point of the thread.

    ---

I think both Aion and LoTRO looked better on my computer also. I think this has to do with it being an actual game instead of a screenshot.

I personally felt the Aion environment was alien to the characters within it. If the game is going to have stylized graphics (a la WoW) at least use that to make the characters fit better with the environs.

The same thing happened to me when I tried taking a screen shot with print screen on aion, seems it makes it look bad.

Look at the pic I had taken and when I was in character customization it looked better.

I agree to that. Lotro character feel so dull and those of Aion look really cool indeed. No objection here.

    Not only that.

AION´s animation are far superior than Lotro´s animations

AION´s character are not just more expressive, they have better texturing and higher poly count than Lotro´s characters.

Dungeons and inside locations have better texturing in AION than Lotro.

Lotro only has pretty woods and a couple of nice lakes.

Compare models, creatures, dungeons and gear in AION with Lotro.

AION, Everquest2, AOC and Vanguard (in some cases) have better animations, dungeons texturing, gear than Lotro.

Check the dungeons from Moria expansion then tell-me if you really belive AION has subpar graphics and not Lotro.

As a side note: there are so many good and expressive art related to Tolkien´s work that is hard to belive how Turbine could create such ugly and inexpressive characters for Lord of the Rings online...

    Dude.. I'm a photographer and I photoshop A LOT.

Believe it or not, I actually have looked at both of them. I mean, really played them.

What was the point of this thread anyway?

Aions graphics are good but are not top notch, that would be age of conan :). Character Detail is very good but the terrain textures are pretty bad.
Besides the game was originally released in 2008, not to sure if the graphics was changed tho.

Aion runs on the Cryengine engine same engine used in Crysis and fary cry 1

    taken from aions home page:

NC Soft, used to build AionOnline very modern graphic engine CryEngine, which is very reliable to show huge spaces and open grounds, in high detailed textures.

We can expect glorious projected forests and caverns, wet terens and superb looking rivers, characters animated in the properly human anatomy etc.

CryEngine engine was build by Crytek. Special 3D engine which is using all newest achievement in 3D graphic field. Shadows and reflections are generated in present, field bump-mapping, pixel-shaders using and modern textures filtration. Cryengine was also optimalized to compare with 64-bit and Dualcore procesors - Athlon 64, Core2Due.

CryEngine engine was used to product games like FarCry or Crysis. AionOnline is the first MMORPG which is using this technology

You are correct, although its cryengine, not far cry engine.Cryengine 2 was used for crysis  updated cryengine2 version for crysis-warhead

MMORPG Entropia Universe recently upgraded its graphics to the CryEngine 2

Simpson Studios, a new development studio, has licensed the CryEngine2 out to use on a Massively Multiplayer Virtual World (MMVW) that takes place on a terraformed Mars

If Aion was licensed o cryengine 2...

IMO Aion to me is lineage2 on 'roids...not a bad thing.

Here are a few pics I took in Aion that I think are pretty nice looking.  LOTRO is a very nice looking game. I just wish I would have stuck with it though.  Someone post your best pics of LOTRO if you can.

I've been a long time supporter of LotRO. I've been there since CB, own 2 lifetime founder accounts, spent countless hours of my free time on various LotRO fan sites adding to the databases, making ABCs, and posting screenshots. I love LotRO ... But ... I find AION to be much more visually appealing. I wish Turbine had spent the time on the animations and character models that NCSoft did ... *sigh* ...

Both games have great art direction.  Aion tries to be a little more fantastical than LOTRO, and I think, aims for lower minimum specs, but they're both very solid in the graphics department.  I don't know why anyone should bother comparing them.  They both blow a lot of other recent MMOs out of the water.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

This is nothing about the gameplay, merely the graphics. Comparing it to an average, similar LOTRO vista shows says IMO all, like one pic says more than 1000 words. The textures, the detail, in everything Aion just IS some years behind. Both parts of the picture at made at max settings of the games with DX9.

What!?!?! That is like low settings for aion i run on max and mine looks better then your lotro.

I don’t get what the OP was trying to prove

Also he is using a bad example of a Aion Screenshot to prove his point (what ever they may be)

art is sooo subjective (and art direction to a much lesser extent).  Any one remember earthbound for the super NES?  it looked like it was drawn in crayons, literally.  but i loved the art and the game is a BIG cult classic to this day.

Opinion wise, i think LOTRO has better scenery gfx but Aion has better character models.

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

They are both bad screenshots from what I can tell..

I've definently seen both games with much better graphics.

  • felorefelore Member Posts: 222

why would you want over the top graphics in an RvR setting?

  • heartlessheartless Member UncommonPosts: 4,993

Aion has pretty good graphics, for the most part. What makes it look bad is the bad terrain textures.

and age of conans world looks better than LoTROs graphics wise....  Aions character models and animations blow LoTROs out of the3 water.. While Lotro has a higher textured world... but there are areas in Aion that are simply amazing looking as well even without the higher textures due to the art direction.

LOTRO is by far the most amazing artistic game out there.  Nothing comes close.  There are some areas that they have used low res models however. Evendim comes to mind.  Those ugly rocks with the green moss... that is bad graphics.  But most of LOTRO is absolutely stunning, you can get some screenshots that would belong in any good art gallery.  Sorry, but Aion can't compare with the landscapes and models LOTRO can produce.

However, graphics and landscapes do not makes a game better....  I might also point out here that LOTRO is a much deeper game and has like 10x more content.  The only area Aion might have an edge is PVP

  • UOvetUOvet Member Posts: 514

Guess it's a good thing all you do in LOTR is PvE I guess ;).

  • VexeVexe Member Posts: 549

The terrain is less detailed, yes, and maybe the trees are less realistically placed, but that's about it.

10x more content. (So...EQ2 has more than 20 x Lotro content besides AION 1.5 has a lot of content...)

    Are you sure?
