Awfull examples omg, if you want to compare the graphic quality of both games then grab good examples, that shit looks like it was taken on a 10yr old gfx card lol

Tbh I played both LOTRO and Aion and saying Aion has worst graphics is defently not true. The quality of the envoirenment on LOTRO does have a few better points then Aion, but is nowhere near as graphicly better.

I play with max settings all the time and when I'm in Pandemonium there are hundreds of people and I have never experienced any lag at all.  Do you think there will be more people around you in the Abyss than there are in the capital city?

Forgive me, but I don't believe you...

     .....

You cant compare Aion to Lotro, gameplay an graphics-wise, simply does not compute.
Link above contains my first 2 works...

    Enjoy

I really would be interested how you did that? The links just leads to some cooking advise. It is an official change or a player made mod? And is it legal? Quite interesting shot, it would at least make those bleak WOW-like textures better. Still, trees, plants and much others is still leagues behind. Sorry, thats not a matter of "personal taste", its a fact. Compare any 2 meadows, compare any two sorts of bushes or trees and it is plain as the day unless Aion fanboism has blinded you.

And I am the LAST person to be biased towards LOTRO! Heck, the official LOTRO forum is full of rants against LOTRO gameplay, but fact is fact, and that fact IS that Aion graphics of the world is in many ways poor. Not to speak of the fact that its one long quest tunnel. Or that cities are 100% reduced to fuction buildings. If you visit Bree you see houses where the people are supposed to live. Or the shire, or heck any LOTRO city. If you visit Sanctum or Verteron, all are just shops. I wonder where all those people live? Heck even years old Qeynos and Freeport from EQ2 were more believable cities. No my friends, in terms of world design and world graphics Aion is nothing more than any F2P Asian game like Perfect World or the like and long term subs will proof that in the end.

To those that say gameplay over graphics, that's all well and fine. Many people deem Aion to be a graphic powerhouse. I think that is the point of the thread.
    ---
I think both Aion and LoTRO looked better on my computer also. I think this has to do with it being an actual game instead of a screenshot.
I personally felt the Aion environment was alien to the characters within it. If the game is going to have stylized graphics (a la WoW) at least use that to make the characters fit better with the environs.

    bingo!

Aion is a contender to WoW on graphics because the world doesnt count too much as the character and action itself. Althought the art of WoW is a lot better than Aion, the graphic itself is somewhat worst than Aion. AoC and LOTRO are in other level, trying to achieve realism, thats why their graphics are better than the majority. Aion have beautiful characteres, maybe the second in this league (second only to AoC),  however all the other graphics, including landscape and specially armours and weapons are terrible... The textures, the shadows, are all made to low end machines, than it CANT be good... Look to the mobs graphics...

Traditionality the oriental MMOs dont give too much attention on textures because mostly of their game will run on low-end machines. Aion is no exception. We can argue about gameplay all we want, but, IMHO, Aion is the BEST graphics on the market...for a oriental MMO, which means that its pair only to WoW and Pirates of Burning Sea...

An by the way, I dont play games which weapons and armours has no sense of proportion and therefore looks like plastic toys bought on Wal-Mart for kids.. Thats why I dont play WoW and  thats why I dont play AIon (well, thats ONE reason, tehre is more, much more to me, but I dont intend to change the subject).

I can't think of a WORSE screenshot to show what LotRO looks like. It would have been better to show you a city, a waterfall, the swamps, ANYTHING. That image doesn't even look like it's on max settings.

To be fair, I have never seen a screenshot of LotRO that at ALL did it justice. It's by and far the most visually stunning game that I've ever played, and I have played a LOT. GW, WoW, EQ2, CoH, EVE, Warhammer, etc, etc, etc, ad infinitum. If the game is out today....I have played it, at LEAST for a couple of months, and LotRO with DX10 on max settings (doesn't take as monstrous of a machine as EQ2 maxed out, and looks FAR better).....it's just breathtaking.

So while I appreciate the sentiment of the OP....the chosen screenshot, fails to make the case in point.  Yes, the grass and flowers are "okay," but that's not even the tiniest example of what is really there.

If you have a great computer and you love beautiful graphics....just download the trial and play it so you can at least see what it REALLY looks like, because no screenshots will be able to show you. And make sure you're running DX10 on the highest, or even NEXT TO the highest settings.  It's blow you away gorgeous.

Aion....is also beautiful, but more in a GW style of hues and muted tones and colors, with just enough bloom to smooth it all out. It's lovely and almost "pastel" (not always literally pastels). It's an entirely DIFFERENT kind of beauty.

Here's a video on YouTube that better shows (play in HQ) what LotRO actually looks like.  Apart from the fact it's a really really FUNNY video. :)

New Texture pack for Altgard is out.

    Enjoy, and post feedback.

Improve Aion's Graphics with a simple text file that you can create by yourself:

-Increase in-game Field of View to 175% or more

-Increase view distance for players to 100 meters with camera at max distance

    -Lots of other settings

True, but its nice to have decent graphics. Its nice to look at something that looks awesome, than something that hurts your eyes its so bad. (not directed at aion)

Graphics is one of the things that draws me in, gameplay is the thing that keeps me there.

I know your comment is not directed at AION.  But to those who may not know, AION is a very nice looking game -- so, as far as the OP goes, good job splitting hairs.

There are more effects going off. More combat intense fast paced animations and more interactions between models. It all slows down the game.. So ya generally speaking Mass PVP slows down computers more than Capital Cities. Think back to DAoC.. You could run the capital cities with almost no lag.. however when you first experianced mass RVR... the game was a crawl it forced me to do my first major upgrade since EQ1 LOL>. .jeez i remember those days.

If that's the case why are people playing Aion at all?  It's not even all that evolutionary.

I have the opposite opinion Girlgeek.

Everquest 2 to my eyes is much more impressive and unique then Lotro.

EQ2 has one of my favorite game visuals side by side with Silent Hill 2-3, Aion, Guild Wars, Folklore, Shadow of the Beast, Enclave and a couple of other games.

EQ2 has superior models, shadows and animations if we compare to Lotro but what I really like in EQ2 is its unique stylized artstyle, original and cohesive but not for everyone.

I always felt very immersed into EQ2 world but it was always a pain for me to swollow the Tolkien´s world recreated by Turbine especially the playable characters. Even the nice "green" locations of Lotro always remind me of Canada and not Middle Earth...

Anyway, it is good to know there are games for everyone outhere.

  • OrthelianOrthelian Member UncommonPosts: 1,034

I've never understood what people find so attractive about LotRO's graphics. I found it horribly dated the day it was released.

Low-resolution textures; jagged, poorly proportioned models with stumpy legs and gigantic shoulders; animations that resemble puppets on strings; et cetera....

Nasty, nasty graphics. This from someone who loved the game for various other reasons.

It's the composition, the positioning of everything, that makes its screenshots occasionally interesting, just like Aion. But Aion is obviously worse, yes.

I live not 15 minutes from Turbine, and I seriously get the impression that they were simply looking around their town when building their Middle-earth. I kept expecting to hit a suburb every time I turned a corner in LotRO. It bears a striking resemblance. Only in LotRO, everyone and everything appears to be made of stuffed socks.

Lotro DOES have some great graphical capabilities... if you have the hardware to display it all. Unfortunately LotRO has some horrible combat mechanics which really slows down the gameplay.

That is a lie and you know that. Sure you can make some better places in Aion, but for every screen you make of Aion landscape I show you a LOTRO screen 10 times better. I compared average areas. I did on purpose chose a simple place outside of Bree and not elaborate Evendim or Lothlorien screenshot.

Or just do this: install both, set both to max and then Alt-Tab out of LOTRO and compare it to Alt-Tab Aion. Why does take Aion 10 times as long to alt-Tab out when the textures are THIS?

Yes you CAN find better Aion vistas, but for every one you find I find you LOTRO vistas many times better as well. In every comparision, LOTRO WILL win, and if you really played both you KNOW this is the truth. So who of us IS the troll?

Good graphics aren't doing anything for LOTRO almost dead servers though, hahahaha.  I predict that game will go F2P within a year.

There is no way this thread is serious... someone put in a 6600 GS and noticed both games lookign similar on very low settings... how ironic...Aion is one of the most amazing pieces of colorful MMO art i've seen in some years and I have played every MMO.

The one thing I didn't like about LOTRO was the characters, very little choice when creating and once created seem to be made of rubber and looked awful.

It's very obvious the OP went out of his way to look for a bad spot in Aion. There are a few spots in Aion that have low resolution textures to help run the game smoother. The OP found one and uses it as a representation for what the entire game looks like.

Another big difference is that, unlike in Lotro, you can actually walk around without the entire environment of 20 feet away popping up.

Lotro has a terrible pop in problem.

Ok those pictures have no validity at all.

First you choose the worst images ever.

    What is your system spec?

Because i have a gtx 290 and an i7 and Aion runs 10 times bettern than Lotr

Yea i thought aion graphics were going to be much better then what they turned out, from watching all the videos on it. They look almost like oblivion graphics, just not as good. Well i guess it just goes to show you cant always believe what you see, oh on a side note, anyone know how to click to go places instead of using a,w,s or d and the arrow keys, because I find that annoying as hell, if anyone does please tell me, that would be great :D

dude, i've been playing LOTRO since stress tests.... what is this pop in you speak off? my rig is getting pretty old, and the only thing close to pop in, is my foilage draw distance, of about a hundred yards or so? LOTRO has i think some of the best draw distance of any mmo.... i can see mobs a few hundred yards away, when the area is flat enough

Wow, I don't know what server YOU'RE talking about, but the one I've been playing on is very far from dead.   O.o  LotRO has a very commited player base.  No, it doesn't have 11 million subscribers or 300 servers, but it does have very stable and populated servers. Please do let us know WHAT server you're referring to when you say the "servers" are "dead," because I'm not seeing that at all.

On the other hand, I also have to agree with the "AION side" gamers in this thread that are saying that was a TERRIBLE screenshot from Aion.  Aion is gorgeous.  It's just an entirely different style, and that screenshot the OP used for Aion was a bad of an example of Aion as the one he used for LotRO....they BOTH sucked and were not representative of EITHER game.
