You have a total of four character slots. They can all be on one server or spread across mulitple servers, however you wish.
Greedy. I didn't have a problem with SOE until this. I love to make alts, in alot of games I had 8+ active characters on an account. This is a real game-breaker for me.
Hopefully SOE will change this, just about everyone on the beta forums are pissed off.

It is genious of SOE in a way(not saying it is good), just like what they did in SWG. SWG had 1 char a server, so everyone who really wants to do multiple things has to buy multiple accounts! They had some people paying 10 subs a month for 10 chars on a server (mainly for lots and stuff). Was rare to be that high, but still....2 to 3 boxing was VERY common, like around 20% of the fanbase.
Now they are doing it in EQ 2, with great plausible deniability ("we gave you enough to try each archtype" and "this game is so advanced, we needed to conserve on databse space to save on costs to the consumer (yeah right)". Look for those lines soon....
Basically, true fans of this game will end up having two subs, trying out multiple chars and artisan types. That is doubling SOE's income from a good % of the playerbase, temporarily, until they get ticked off and quit. However, it seems SOE's MMO philosophy is about constant turnover, which you can see through fast expansions, multiple game titles running at the same time, and keeping the box sales high (their biggest money maker) by using their PR/Hype machine to its full effect. This way they can suck in tons of new people, and try to bribe people back who quit (ie SWG JTL beta, have to Subscribe again to swg to play it). Some people will deny this, but this IS SOE's way of doing business now, and can be seen in every, single one of their titles.
So there you go, proof SOE is all about money and nothing about the player base. Oh, and for the kicker, most people can't cancel their preorders since they got a character creation disk (one of the terms of preordering the CC disk, can't cancel). Only the few lucky ones who can get store credit won't be stuck with something that they now do not want. The rest can try Ebay or just "try the game out and see what happens", which SOE wants as they make new, great promises each month to get the disenchanted to try just one more month...hoping for a change...that may never come (SWG combat revamp).
Yup it's obvious that they are doing it so some people will buy 2+ accounts.. I just think it's a really, really crappy move... made by an already crappy company.

crappy deal?... yes...
topic worthy?... naw...
whatever...
i personally only have like 1 sometimes 2 characters going in any game i play... it's obvious why they're doing this (so some people will buy multiple accounts) but i dont think it's a big deal...
i personally dont see why you would want any more then 4 characters going at a time anyways
[edit] the one thing that does get to me though is say for instance you play for years and years (like some people have done with games like UO, EQ, and Lineage) you will EVENTUALLY cap out all 4 slots... then it's all like... well wtf do i do now?...
anyways, on a bullshit scale of 1-10, i give this a 2¨ö

Well I dunno about you, but in Star Wars Galaxies, I could of lived with just 1 account. But you see, the only reason I "needed" 2 accounts (Actually I ended up owning 3 in the end) is not because of the way the game was made... it's because of the freaking community!!!
I had my first account, my combat character. He had the best combat template. Now I either had the choice to ruining my combat template and take some merchant skills to sell all my hard earned loot, I also had to choice to ***trust*** another player merchant to steal... oops I mean sell all my hard earned loot. Or buy a 2nd account and make that character a merchant.
And heck, all it took was 1 acquaintance to screw me over, to convince myself to buying a 2nd account.
Sorry but when you play a game where you can't trust anyone other than yourself, it's no surprise most people end up owning more than just 1 account.
It's like they always say: "If you want the job done, you gotta do it yourself".

yeah this is crap!
I think four slots to spread out between all the servers is horrible! If they had four slots for each server that would be different. on EQ I played on a normal server and played on god-based server and all pvp server. right there is three slots, then they are only gonna give me one other slot? thats really bad!!!
I really dissaprove.

I really HIGHLY doubt that there will ever be more then 4 char slots per account for several reasons.
1) Same as in SWG having more then a few characters (in that case 2, including the FS slot) per server meant a lot more player homes meaning a lot of empty space being used up, freeport for example if people could have 8 chars would be a gigantic sprawling metropolis.
2) SOE databases are fairly poor, if you played SWG you'd know this as items allowed or alloted and buildings allowed were lessoned in beta, and soon after launch because it was to taxing on their poorly done database. It's unfortunate but dems de breaks

"Sony Customer Service is like Santa Clause, people say they've seen them but they don't really exist"
This is very disappointing.
I like to try almost all classes and most races.
Houses I could see, except I think using a single home per account not only solves this but provides a means to trade to your alts. They may not love trading to your alts - but it will happen (with a few stolen items) regardless.
At least you don't have to pay per character like in FFXI.....
Although, I guess that would be cheaper than having 2 accounts if you wanted more than 4 chars.
But, I see a lot of players having a second account anyway, even if they don't have alts. You have to be in your house to sell your items on the black market, so a second accout would be needed if you wanted to sell stuff 24/7.
Uh... but that's for BETA. They're saying that every beta tester has 4 characters. Hince it being on the BETA forums. They still have not released how many characters you will have when the game goes live.

That's not an official announcement. I stand by what I said before.
It was announced that the beta testers will only have 4 characters and they have not released how many you will have when EQ2 goes live. Until then, there's no use discussing it.
Give me an official statement (announced on the site and/or in the FAQ, not the open forums) on the numbers of characters at release, then I will be like "Oh, OK. You were right."
edit: the reason they haven't said anything about the number of characters at release is exactly because they haven't said anything yet. they're very manipulating when it comes to releasing info. they've locked all the threads about the 4 characters because they can't give the players answers like 'it will be the same/more when the game goes live' - all moorguard said is confirming that right now, you only have 4 characters. some people had more than 4 (i could only make 4 from the start) and they had to delete the extras. they're biding their time and will release the official poop when they're ready.

This was what was in the original post of the topic(posted yesterday in beta forums):
This is what "Moorgard", a community manager said in response to the above(posted about 2 hours ago):
Sounds pretty "official" to me..
There would be no reason to state that there are 4 characters in beta, since that had nothing to do with the topic post, and everyone in beta already knows that. So he had to know he was talking about release.
Since then quite a few posts about the 4 characters were made, some with 9+ pages filling up in an hour, some more, some less,, and they are all now locked.. if Moorgard was talking about beta he could of easily corrected himself in one of those threads, but instead he chose to lock them.

hehe hope i don't get in trouble for this...
"The posts from the devs that were quoted could be taken as the way the game is NOW (in beta) and not how it will be."
From a GM:
" I don't know when Moorgard talked about the 4 slots or whom he was addressing. I do not know if that applies to the live release, or to just Beta."

If the GM's don't know, you'll still call that official? They're speculating just like everyone else.
edit:
"You have a total of four character slots. They can all be on one server or spread across mulitple servers, however you wish."
Look at the syntax. you 'have' as in right now. Not you 'will have' when it's released. The question is how many characters at release. He doesn't even answer the question.
the only thing that can change my mind is when this changes:
How many total characters can I have?
We have not announced a total number of available character slots yet.
