EQ2 does NOT support Anti-Aliasing!

unpoetunpoet Member Posts: 59

This is an issue thats been bothering me for quite a while and i wish people in eq2 beta knew anything at all about this topic, but unfortunately they do not. I think AF is also broken but it all relates to the same problem.

EQ2 does not have or allow any kind of anti-aliasing, it has the same problem that plagued ff11pc and halopc(im sure there are more games with this problem as well). This problem has to do with something called "render targets", which is how EQ2 creates those blurring effects found around torches and fires. So great, you got blurred fire effect but now you have no AA. As someone else once said, two steps backwards for every step forwards. Im no expert on this but i know there are ways to make AA work with these effect still in place. Doom3 runs anti-aliasing just fine, so does Far Cry to name a few. I believe that in this day and age there is no excuse for not being able to run these features. Anti-aliasing is one of more important aspects of achieving the photo realistic, movie like game play and it frankly it hurts my eyes after playing every other game with it. I feel like i stepped into a time portal to the days of tnt2 graffix.

If anyone can tell me im wrong here they better have a damn good, in depth technical explanation because i know i mines somewhat broken but it is correct.

Ofcourse this needs a thread, why wouldnt it? This is something people should know, wether it bothers them or not, this will be the 2nd MMORPG to have this flaw. By the way, I could not find any real info about anti-aliasing in my searches of the beta forums either. I also think a lot of people are getting theirposts deleted there lately. Including my own.

Mainly im looking for someone who knows more about rendertargets and how they are used in eq2.

I think it'd hurt your eyes more to play the game at 2fps with your AA turned on, lol.image

Cant you just turn it on in your video card options if it doesnt have the option in game? Upping your resolution should have a similar effect, Just bump that up. I dont think that ffxi is a good comparison, there is a HUGE difference between the graphics of the two. tnt2 graphics? I think not. If eq2 hurts your eyes.. you may have a medical problem. It makes my eyes melt with joy.

I don't see the problem.  I would rather let the professionals choose what the game graphics will include instead of someone that doesn't know anything about what sony plans to do... this game has insane graphics... there is no need for anything else.  I would much rather play an awesome game with awesome gameplay with limited graphics over a crap game with AWESOME GRAPHICS... and it just so happens EQ2 might be an awesome game with awesome gameplay and awesome graphics.

I agree with the majority of people here.. I'm not sure what the issue is?  So what if they don't use anti-aliasing?  Do they advertise that they do? I'm not sure I get it.  The graphics look great without the anti-aliasing.  I'd rather keep AA off and frame rates high than have incorporate it and kill frame rate.

Could you explain what the big deal is? *not sarcastic, I really would like to know*

Just play Doom 3 then. That's about all I do anyway.

They advertise the game engine as top of the line and futureproof yet it can't do something as important as AA and AF?  I hope this isn't true and I doubt it is because most the screenshots I've seen have AA on for sure.

Tell me AA and AF aren't on in this shot:

They better have AA, i can't imagine them not.

Also don't always trust proffesionals, they might be taking a "shortcut".

yes thats how they advertise it, this is how it really is.

People kept saying AA might be in by release but with it being so close i doubt now, but since they advertise like that you would expect it to be in game.

well i just watched several beta player's videos, graphics look like shit compared to the ones on the EQ2 site. If the game doesnt look like what they advertise on my fairly new alienware PC i'm gunna be pissed.

Every computer in a personal home has a different graphic cards. Some have low end graphic cards, some have middle range graphic cards while other have high end graphic cards.

EQ2 site shows you the graphics of a high end graphic card.  You cannot simply buy a game and expect it to look just like the website if you own a 50 dollar graphics card. I made that mistake 4 years ago when I bought a game cause the graphics on the box rocked. When I installed it, I realized that the graphics are available as per the condition of your video card.

Not everyone in the beta has a 600 dollar uber 6800 geforce 256 video card to emulate the screenshots from EQ2. Is it false advertisement? Absolutely not; because the screenshots taken are from a video card that is available to the public. Whether or not you want to spend the money to emulate the graphics shown on the official site is up to you.

Here are some screenshots I had done with a geforce 4600 128. In my opinion, these graphics don't look too bad for the card being only 60 bucks these days.

also, remember that players movies (like mine) are toned down for display on the web. you're not gong to see the real detail of the graphics. the ones i have seen from players that are ziped, are just as good as the game movies released by sony. that's why i have decided to start ziping my movie files. image

That looks sweet!!!!! considering the graphics card. I agree with you about having a fair comp but crappy graphics card.

Most families have their emachine, walmart special, or the celeron blue light special, and not a high end comp made for gaming.

Before ya flame, I have been a electrician for over 17 years, and on average every home I worked in that had a comp....was low to mid range. So I am speaking from personal experience.

I have no idea what unpoet is talking about. I only have a Geforce 5700LE 256 and the game/beta looks nothing like the pic ture he linked to and moreso like the first pic with the dwarf and the skeltons on the bridge. Heck, it even looks a bit more crisp and clear.

My suggestion to anyone reading this thread is to not get too upset or concerned about it. It isn't a blanketissue, as it seems to only be affecting some people, not all. As was pointed out a few posts up, every home likely has a different computer with different cards. Who knows what the reason was that caused the pic in unpoet's link to look that way. image

The movies looked far better on the movies then they did on my pc. I have also seen it on a 6800 GT, it still doesnt compare to the movie. The eq2 video was made professional with top-line pc(10,000+)- and who has the kind of money for a stupid pc. It's kinda false-advertsingish.

All screenshots and in-game movies on the EQ2 website were not done with a 10,000+ computer

Right now a 10,000 dollar computer won't run the game any better than a 2,000 dollar one.

Close to it, dual 6800 pci-express ultras, FX-53, 2gb ram, pci express mobo with dual pci-express slots, water cooling, etc. Ive seen alienwares up at that price.

I give up, most of you either dont understand or have football shaped eyes.

Thanks for those that posted screenshots, im now 100% sure that AA and AF dont work in this game either. Notice how the grainy and pixilated the textures are on the zombie picture, then look at the skeletons/dwarf picture and see how smoothed out they are in comparison. I dont think those screenshots are even from in game!(maybe pre-rendered or in an altered game engine not available to the public)

Sony did not take that screenshot on an expensive high end machine, well they might have.. but thats not why it looks better. It looks better because it has both Anti-aliasing and Anisotropic filtering enabled two features that do NOT exist in game at all.

You can call this false advertising if you want, but i dont really care. I just want everyone to realize what a second rate job they did when coding this game, and how these simple features could improve it vastly.

And by the way! remember how i was bitching about how this whole problem relates back to the "render targets" problem? This has something to do with why everyones screenshots and movies  look like worse crap, because they cant capture all the effects. I swear, the more i look into the this games problems the more im convinced it was made by monkeys chained to keyboards.

to be very honest, I could care less if the game does or doesn't have AA, as long as they provide good content with a decent leveling system.

Also, I find the graphics to be very nice and crisp (whether it has AA or not)....I guess I'm not that picky.
