Not saying Aion is the greatest game ever, I enjoy it, but its definately not for everyone.  Definately a sharper leveling curve than WoW, but there is somthing relaxing about grinding on mobs for a little while, for me at least.  Oh well, heres hoping that everyone finds that magical game again.

I agree with you, alot of those that are enjoying Aion now are people that want to recapture how it was in EQ/DAoC.  The problem with this is for most people, nostalgia only lasts so long.  EQ was 10 years ago.  It's not so much now that you don't enjoy that type of gameplay anymore, but things have changed, you've gotten older, time management is a factor now.  Not only that, but the industry has changed.  You can make your game better by incorporating things that games since EQ have done and it doesn't have to be cookie cutter like WoW.

I am so sick of the whiney sniveling little bitches that all they want to do is complain about why they quit a game or how the Devs lied and how cookie cutter the games are. Move on. Get a tissue wipe your nose and go outside. There is nothing new in any games that are out and that are coming out, they are all in it to make money, PERIOD. I just wonder if we gamers are no longer addicted to "playing the game" but "playing the hype"?

With so many MMO's coming out so quickly and the ramped up advertising strategies we are all addicted to the hype and the new of a game and once that wears off we just move on the the next MMO because there a new game/expansion that's all shiny and new with a fresh layer of hype.

Do we as gamers still give a game time to grow, or do we never look back and just hope the next game will release with the same amount of character and development that a game that's had five years to develop?  Is that expecting to much?

In our quest in looking for the next best MMO, I think we may have lost site of what we really want a MMO to be and have been sucked in to a "ooooo shiney " mentality.

  • ThillianThillian Member UncommonPosts: 3,156

You can only blame yourself. You guys jump on every hype-wagon going on. AoC, War, now Aion. You prefer shallow games where more money was spent on marketing and trailers than on the actual gameplay. You whine here that there's no MMO around, yet you never bother to try Fallen Earth, EVE or VG.

    REALITY CHECK

  • RihahnRihahn Member Posts: 146

    Same here.

Bought the game, skipped about in the flowers and rainbows until 10, started to feel the burn a bit through 20, and just coulnd't hang with the rep and stopped at 25.

In my opinion, Aion is just another "graphics over content" MMO...

Unfortunately, some years ago the gamer population drove this mentality at the dev and publisher level by buying box art and talking up poly counts. EQ was 'content over graphics', most of the 'second gen' MMOs (AC, Shadowbane, Horizons, Eve, etc) were 'design over graphics' - and even WoW's much maligned low-poly style and 6000+ quests came from the content over graphics camp, and we all know how that worked out for them...

But now we get stuff made with bleeding edge engines for maximum shiny, fifty person art departments, and completely non-engaging game play - I'm talking industry failures like Vanguard, AoC, Warhammer - and now possibly Aion.

Then again, I'm old and remember when Zork was the most engaging thing on my PC... I'm also in the industry and attend trade shows where the big news is usually game engine folks demonstrating the latest in specular bump mapping or touting how many polys per second they can push with unlimited view distance.

The game design panels are normally held in dark closets with about 20 people attending. Meanwhile CryTek shows up with a marginal upgrade for DX11 and it's standing room only.

So, it's not the gamer who is at fault by looking for that diamond in the rough MMO or simply playing something passable while waiting for the next game they hope will be 'the one'. It's the industry pushing tech because that's easier than making a good game.

You guys keep shoveling in shit by the mouthfulls, hyping it up to the point of insanity, all the while, asking for more, then wonder why the genre is in the toilet.  Vote with your wallet, not with whining on forums. Otherwise be prepared to keep seeing garbage like Aion being pumped out over and over.  Want the genre to get better?  Quit buying *shit*, and telling everyone that these *shit* titles are going to revolutionize the genre.

Not to mention how many threads there are like this.  Do we really need a lot of thread telling us the same reason why the game is bad.  You wanna talk about how repetitive the mmo's are? These threads are getting repetitive.

  • AlexanderVendiAlexanderVendi Member UncommonPosts: 378

I really wish i could blame the reason as to why i gave up on aion after like 5 days of playing and trying out like all classes on my lack of time and having a full time job but that's not it...

I just had a huge dejavu while playing the game u know?

Think ima give up on mmorpg's till something new and fun comes out .

My enthusiasm for a good , fun , casual friendly , solid dungeon crawler has reached it's peeks now , cauze i don't think il be able to ever play the standard gameplay evolvement  fell that we are all used to in todays mmo market.

Someone in this thread had a point that caught my eye, but don't remember who.

I think we will need a revolution in media hardware before we will ever see any MMO or anything so refreshing and new that it blows our minds away again..  There is just so much you can do with graphics, mouse pointers and keyboards.. Wii is revolutionary.. But yet even it wouldn't stand up as a good MMO environment..

I do try to recapture that feeling I had back when Ultima Online came out and EQ1.  Everything since then has been built on it because we've reached the limit of our framework.  The next revolution is to feel like your in the environment, where it's all around you through 3D goggles that tap into your peripheri etc.. Until then what kind of newness can we expect ?

Any inovators want to answer that ? I could be bored to death AION if I chose to.. but at lvl 20 , I am not choosing to yet but I can say the same for any other MMO out there today.

I could give EVE another try.. that is mentally stimulating to a point.

Chess has been a popular game for ages and ages and it can't get any better.. MMO's are the same type of thing. IMO.

We need the goggles!! we need to feel like we're really inside the game.. That's the challenge of the generation.

Until then, I am content with Aion at least for now.

the only thing im overly upset abou tis the price i paid for the game. is it bad? not really. Just that it wasn't for me. Reason for leaving, boredom. There are nice things about teh game but what aion does is accomplished already by alot of f2p mmo's. Flying is not the reason im going to keep playing.

I've played wow for a very long time and continue to play, it is a evolving game. With aion despite all the "new" things and the flying etc, i still just have this feeling wow is more robust, i feel like im in the world when i play, all the addons, the customization and the involvement i have in my character. At the same time, i've played wow to the same extent. i log in on tuesday clear toc, clear togc, fish a bit socialize and don't really log back on that much the rest of the week.

Personaly, i think mmo players are ready to evolve but the industry is still stuck selling cookie cutter game plans, with no real change in mmo's. Im anxiously waiting the new final fantasy, swtor, d3 and some others with swtor looking like the game that's going to make the mmo genre into a "choose your own adventure" role. Basically, as i played over the past 15 years or so gaming, im 32 years old. I've come to appreciate storyline and depth more.

    lately, i've been playing.

Cod4 moder warfare (waiting on mw2, game looks amazing).

S.U.N (soul of the ultimate nation).

    Archlord (real grinder but cute)

WoW (its so easy to play wow now, fun to log in every now and then).

Aion (i just put it down a week ago.)

I play all these titles casually, and it's really made gaming more fun but im a "variety is the spice of life" type person. I will say this. If ijji fixes some of the lag issues with S.U.N i may stick with that a bit. The game isn't for anyone but it's been rather enjoyable so far with some old school type rpg flavors in it. All in all, just think aion was overhyped , some people love it others hate it, personally just found it in a class with other mmo's i play for free. i felt ripped off tbh.

I do understand the over all point of your post. I would love to see interface technology advance to make 3d games more immersive.

However, I'd like to make a couple related points.

First, the lack of creativity in MMORPG design goes way beyond technical or interface limitations.

Second, there are some genuine technical limitations that have forced MMORPG designers to always have to compromise on the experience they offer.

We just don't have the raw computer and GPU horsepower to allow for the combination of viewing distance, world detail and character detail we would all like to see in MMORPGs. Developers are in a bit of a catch 22, because if they go with lower demand visuals (e.g. WoW) in order to allow for greater viewing distances and more open world design, people complain about how outdated the graphics are. If they focus on character models, customization, armor etc... as Aion has done, people get upset about the short range viewing distances and closed in world design. etc...

I do think, though, that MMORPG producers are too happy to stifle creativity and blame it on technical limitations, rather than finding ways to overcome surmountable technical hurdles. I think a lot of the mediocrity in the genre can be blamed on an attitude of "what can we do comfortably".

Have more fun, complain less. Bored ? Form a group and start doing Rift PvP, its loads of fun and a nice change of pace from leveling. The only reason you are so bored is that you got burned by the 'Need to hit max lvl ASAP' mentality of WoW. You should enjoy and take your time while leveling.

You act as if those complainers refuse to have fun. Ever occurred to you that you maybe like a game, that many other players find boring? Be glad its like that. There would never be a market for new games if ppl would stick with the same game for eternity. We would all still be listening to some old age music and only play tic tac toe.

You are not alone in these feelings. I guess most people are really looking for the next generation MMORPGs to come out, maybe that will be Star Wars, but also worth checking out the console MMO that are coming out too.

I am going to unsubscribe and see how the game does for the rest of this year. My main reason is to see what NC Soft is going to do about the Bots and Gold Sellers. I kinda see Lineage 2 happening all over again with Aion. I still consider Lineage 2 to be the best MMO ever made but its a shame how NC Soft let the botters, farmers and ebayers ruin it. I went through it for 4 years with Lineage 2 because I loved the game so much the good of the game just out weighed the bad but I am not going to go through it again with Aion.

I agree that Aion also just does not make you want to play it. To me it lacks that adventure aspect and I have never really been a fan of quest based mmos that make you go from point A to point B and dont allow anything in between. I am fine with Aion having only  2 Races but there are not enough classes. No open world just zones that dont really contain anything intresting. I am not a fan of the combat because you are spamming the same skills over and over and it takes too long to kill mobs. I guess I am just so use to Lineage 2 style where you are just destroying mobs just by doing regular attacks and using skills only when needed whether its solo or group. Aion is a good game that will appeal to some people but I think most people on this site are MMO players that have been through this and evolved past the type of game that Aion is.

I just downloaded Everquest 2 trial and so far I am really enjoying it. I think I am going to play Everquest 2 until Tera, Guild Wars 2 or Final Fantasy XIV comes out. I am also going to try Vanguard. So if anybody wants to start new in Everquest 2 on Antonio Bayle server send me a message.

Yes crafting, PvP, redo group area content, etc.  The norm really.

I am observing a constant path in all the previews posts.

People is getting bored  around lvl 25..............myself got stuck at lvl 26.

I have to say that is the levl I started feeling the grind (actually it started at lvl 20).

This game has no real objective, and whilst from 1-20 the quests helped people forget about the grind, after lvl 20 it becomes much more difficult to advance by just doing quests.

That's when you realize that apart from questing, this game offers little help.

    Lineage 3 for the win.................................

I really don't get how people can be unhappy with Aion and run to EQ2 unless they're a crafting nut.  The crafting is the only thing that game excels in over Aion if you're into that sort of thing.  I think it's overkill myself but they have made it far more reasonable than it used to be and there are those that like that sort of thing.

As to the sense of adventure and lore?  Never felt any of that playing EQ2 and considering how much I loved EQ that was a real dissappointment.  I suppose it all boils down to opinion though so good luck with your endeavours.

Frankly, assuming by this point they fixed the numerous issues the game had VG has far more available to it than EQ2 far as lore and making you feel like you're part of the adventure.  Although the main concern with that game to me would be population levels and how much support that game is actually getting from SOE and their developers.

Everquest 2 is new to me so as of right now I am enjoying it. I tried the game years ago but my PC was not good enough at that time to run it well. I always said it was a game I will come back and try later when I get a better PC.  As of right now I am getting the feel of Adventure and thats what I am looking for. Also I think this game has some of the best graphics I have ever seen in a MMO. The Art Style is different but it looks great if you have a good enough PC.
