I'm interested in the sci-fi aspect much more than the sandbox or PvP aspects, so Mortal Online really doesn't enter into the picture when I think of EVE-killers, although I am looking forward to it.

Star Trek Online, The Old Republic, and Earthrise are the obvious sci-fi MMOs coming up, but I think EVE's is a better sci-fi setting than either of them have embraced, so I don't have any really high expectations therein.

I had high hopes for Infinity, once upon a time, but I have doubts that it will ever see the electromagnetic field of anyone's HDD.

EvE appeals to people for specific reasons beyond its sandbox qualities. Things such as MO wont put a dent in it because they will appeal to a different set of people.

EVE has the most fanatically devoted fanbase in the entire MMORPG genre. no game that isn't made by CCP  will ever be capable of pulling a significant amount of players from EVE.

Back in 2004 we think the same of EQ.

Except EQ was a poorly made SOE game that was easily surpassed by the games that came after it.

    Not so with EVE.

As mentioned, doubtful any developer will provide the same sort of features that EVE does (skill training while AFK for example) which is a large part of the appeal.

Though nothing says CCP can't shoot themselves in the foot I suppose.

Infinity is still chugging along.  I can't wait until it releases.  Having a nice looking ship AND landing on a planet (or getting crushed inside a gas giant) is going to blow EVE out of the water.  Their engine looks great, the only thing that will kill that game is if they screw up on the gameplay.

Crazy comparison really. I'm surprised you even thought the two games could be put in the same category in any way.

I don't post in such a way about games I know little of, maybe you should consider doing the same.

First I agree with what you wrote.  But that seems to spring off from a different note than what I wrote.  I must be writing too carelessly and failed to convey the point.

In the early EQ days, before we see the better games (DAoC in particular), we think that EQ is the best way to gaming.  After all, its a 386SX for me back then, what better can I hope for.

With new technology, and original ideas, it is possible that some kind of game design will put the current EvE design into the shade.  CCP will either evolve and keep up/out compete the new comers, or die.

Which, is a good thing.  We got newer games to play, or improved existing games to play.

Crazy?  Hmm ok, crazy for you.  So?

You do not post in such a way, so?  We all follow your footsteps?

What do you really want to say?

Which game I do not know of, or do you know what games I play and how I play?  Do you know me?

I don't make assumptions about others I know little of, maybe you should consider doing the same.

Hahaha, oh wow... someone's on an ego trip here.

I agree with lisubab, something bigger and better could come along and no amount of player loyalty will prevent CCP from feeling the sting.

EVE Online isn't a perfect game, there are plenty of things it could do better (sovereignty, social interfacing, all the PvE content, combat, character variety, UI expandability, etc.) and the rest of the industry is poised to improve on those things while CCP doesn't have it in their scope.

EVE can have huge PvP battles that play out more like zerg rushes than organized assaults, but that doesn't appeal to me... I used to play for the commerce and social stuff, but frankly, that can be done better in so many ways you'd be silly to say it's the best.

EVE is unique... for now. They're the innovators, meaning the perfectionists will be along soon enough to clean up the mess and make a more well-polished game (like WoW did to EQ).

Can't we just have more ......Major Sandbox style MMORPG's regardless if it's Sci-Fi or Fantasy, though I prefer Sci-Fi.

What's this fascination to see other games be dethrowned or killed? I simply do not get that, especialy with a genre like this, shouldn't we get more instead of other games killing other games?

I am an old EQ1 player and Mortal Online is more like those original MMO ... like UO and EQ1. I will soon preorder to join the beta. I heard that the next patch this monday will be great. I am tiered of MMO's where everything is about doing one quest after another. Even thou I understand why lots of kids like the WoW game play.

Both EQ and EQ2 are still up and running. EQ2 still has over 200k subs. Quite a few very devoted fans if you ask me.

    Cheers

I think the topic starts off with a bad title since EvE online is still a niche game and has not enjoyed worldwide success in the same way a game like WoW does. Like any other game it probably has a finite lifespan. That written being niche game it could well start to appeal to the retro gaming market as well as more modern SciFi mmo and real-time online strategy games come out next year.

If the definition of "niche" is "not succeeding like WoW does", then virtually all MMOs are "niche". >300 subs is a pretty big niche.

That so the side, yes the thread title is completely inaccurate. The only things that could kill EvE are some game that comes out that offers a better EvE experience than EvE - and this is a lot easier to say than to do, because EvE's greatest asset is the existing playerbase producing all that emergent content - or if CCP do something completely terrible like sell out to SOE or EA. So long as CCP continue developing and improving and expanding EvE, then it will likely continue to grow at the same steady rate. Their long term target is 600k subs. Still "niche" compared to WoW, of course

Vigil Studios acquired the liscence. Darksiders due out Jan 5? now. No word on expected release of the 40k MMO. They look to be a solid studio as well.

That is exactly right, and we're not saying NO to save WoW, because it is already a lost cause. We are saying NO to dissuade the next group of greedy suits who decide to emulate Blizzard and Cryptic, etc.
We can prevent some of the future games from spewing this crap, but the sooner we start saying no, the better the results will be.

I suspect Jumpgate might provide some distraction.

But once Eve gets underway with its Dust514 and then Walking in stations, I suspect JGE will lack the depth and 'dark' feeling that Eve provides.

Startrek online - This poses approximately zero threat to EvE. Or any other game, come to that.

Miner Wars  - Never heard of this. Got link?

Black Prophecy - Only games that will ever actually launch pose a threat to EvE.

Jumgate Evolution - the only marginally credible contender, but it's very different from EvE.

I disagree, What CCP has done with Eve with its server structure and one universe and all of its truly unique features wont be improved on.  CCP updates Eve have you seen Eve lately? It looks like it released this year and its a 6+ year old game.

Social improvements are coming, more pve is coming, planetary conquest, Dust, new mining mechanics, on foot missions, new ship classes, fleet formations for more tactical gameplay.

All of that being put into the game in the next few months to two years from now. How could any new game keep up with that?

Eve is not EQ, EQ was stuck, near dead, players were already leaving and they couldn't wait for a game like WoW.

I disagree with every one of your "eve could be better" list except sov which is being lightly improved.

Eve is a near perfect game and it continues to evolve with no end in site it is not an old game waiting for a new game to take over.

None of those games are sandbox. JGE is going to be a spaceship themepark with instanced pvp space battlegrounds. BP also looks like a arcade shooter. STO is targeting a completely different playerbase.

I don't see how those games even matter when it comes to Eve.
