Eve has a  rather devoted fan base. The hardcore players have been with that game for ages, also just the fact you can be training skills as long as your account is active without actually spending time in front of the computer is a feature that keeps a lot of people playing and with active subscriptions. they can go tackle the latest WOW updates or expansions, come back to eve and the character has continued to progress.

I don't see TOS dethroning EVE. EVE has such a unique niche mixing business, and industry into a game with space pirates is pretty cool, but the details are appealing to a very distinct kind of player. We'll see, but I think EVE will continue to expand for years to come.

Funny how people are calling TOR just another Theme Park when the game is not even out yet. Eve is just an Online Real Time Stratagy Game. TOR is going to easily surpass Eve on release day. LMAO

Possibly. Whether it will surpass EvE 6 months after release day is the real question.

    Is eveyone clueless today?

Did you read the OP? Hes speaking of Sandbox titles wtf does TOR have to do with sandbox titles????

How will TOR even effect Eve when both games are radically different?

What did you do see someone say Sci-fi then covered your ears and eyes and ignored the rest of the posts in this thread?

The Op brings up other sandbox games as potential "eve killers" since Eve is the highest sub SANDBOX out atm. Unless I missed something and Bioware changed TOR into Pre-Cu 2 its stupid to even bring up TOR.

Now Games like Earthrise, Mortal Online and that Mech MMO could lower eves subs during the first moth but I doubt it will be over the long haul.

Back in 2004 we think the same of EQ.

Except EQ was a poorly made SOE game that was easily surpassed by the games that came after it.

    Not so with EVE.

As mentioned, doubtful any developer will provide the same sort of features that EVE does (skill training while AFK for example) which is a large part of the appeal.

Though nothing says CCP can't shoot themselves in the foot I suppose.

I very much disagree. EQ was AWESOME back in 1999-2001. I am quite sure a EVE cupcake like yourself will remember what EVE was like 4 years ago. Want to talk about a poorly made mess? Three graphics upgrades later EVE is finally on track.

Yahtzee!  I've kept my EVE subs (3) running now for over 2.5 years yet managed to give AOC, WAR, Aion, ROM all a go due to this feature about EVE.  And its not just skill training, my characters make over 3.5B ISK a year even when I'm not playing the game as well. (small change, but still nice to come back to some extra ISK in the bank.)

I'm sure I'll be giving TOR, STO and some other games a trial as well, but doubtful I'll ever stop playing EVE unless.....

CCP totally screws the game up like Mythic did with DAOC and the TOA expansion.

I am not talking about what the OP said. I am talking about people who said that TOR is just another Theme Park game when nobody has even played it yet.  I could care less about Eve or the Eve killer. Like I said Eve is just Online Real Time Stratagy game. Nonthing to see there.

How many Rts  MMOs are on the market? How many Linear (themepark) MMOs are on the market?

People say TOR is a themepark because the devs themselves say TOR is about the story and linear play.

So yes its your normal themepark something that doesnt appeal to Eve players.

ToA was part of the problem, but not the only one, new frontiers was also too much change too fast.

Besides that, I think a better example would be SWG NGE, if something like that would happen to EVE, then it will definatly go down.

The thing about EVE is that CCP keeps improving it, graphics, gameplay, and trying to improve sound ( okay that was a big disaster at first with apocrypha, but they are slowly recovering on that one ), but they still keep the basics intact and have a solid vision for the future. They look at the game and understand that everything can be improved, but they also know that they don't need radical changes.

There is nothing to prevent EVE from being able to compete with new sandboxes.

It's a bit like with WoW, they can copy the good elements of the competition, improve them and implement them. Currently they don't have too, as they are the trendsetters, and there is little competition, but they can if they have too.

The only possible screwup I see is Dust514, but I'll give CCP the benefit of the doubt, as they have a proven track record.

But TOR IS just another Theme Park, while EVE is one of the few good sandbox mmo's ( there are a few upcomming mmo's tho, as mentioned earlier in this thread ).

I don't mind you calling EVE an RTS, but it is alot more than that.

Either way, TOR has nothing on EVE, it won't even scratch EVE in terms of subs.

Eve's just too unique.  I can't think of anything that's close to it's style of play... let alone it's visuals (in MMOs at least) and it's flexibility.  It's just such an open game.

I don't think we'll see and Eve killer because I don't think we'll see another game like Eve.  I think we'll see a game like Jumpgate that's set in a similar environment but isn't really the same game.  They're making more of a toned down space flight sim with a little freelancer and eve thrown into the mix.

Anyhoo... dethrone Eve?  It won't happen... not because it couldn't be done (tho, it would be tough), but because no one will try.
