What about the new video. Capturable mounts, how many games let us capture our own mounts? Whips, how many MMo's have whip as a weapon? =P We see houses being built, but also what it seems to be rows of houses, villages we may call it. If the game allows this, how many games allow the building of villages of player houses? SWG did, but the feature was dead for a long time, and it was very unfortunate.
We'll talk about it when that stuff is not in a video and is in the game.
Considering that the genre has been moving toward being complete garbage for the last several years....
I'm inclined to agree, Aion is definitely moving noticeably forward on its current course.
Are you on drugs? or do u actually beleive what u wrote?. because small zones, no mounts, no swimming, grinding insane xp, no customisation of character, /locate functionhell u are told what amount of slots u can carry in ur bags, is all moving the genre forward right? get a grip. If anything people slate darkfall on this site, Darkfall for a small bloody company did something different to what has been released the last several years.
2. Gliding is pleasant fun, though I am not sure it as inovation important enough to talk about bringing the MMO genre forward.
Free flight destroys the sense of world, everything is a boring straight line with no challenge.
No flight is too limiting.
Gliding is best of both worlds - you seek out hight mountains yet you need some skill, planning and some luck to end up where you want to go. Fantastic!
The idea that gliding is better than free flight is ridiculous. This is one of the most fanbot statements I have ever seen.

I wasn't giving Aion a complement. I was saying its garbage, and not even the good garbage that rich people toss out like WoW is. With THAT garbage you at least sometimes get a good fillet out of it.

No harm, no foul. It WAS kinda hard to get what I meant based on how I said it. I really tried to think of a way to reword it after you said that....but nothing made any more sense either.
Why all the hate for Aion? It's not a bad game, it just needs to be changed a little, and from what I've seen in the Vision video it looks like those changes it needs are coming. Hell, I liked what Vision had so much I bought a much better PC than i currently have.
Aion leveling really needs to be made easier. A lot of people disagree but those people don't seem to understand that games are made for people to have fun, and there's no fun in being forced to do the same thing over and over for hrs with no type of reward or change like a level or a quest chain to get a nice item.
It's actually kinda sad that anyone would prefer a game not to be fun.
Inherited Will, the Destiny of the Age, and the Dreams of its People. These are things that will not be stopped. As long as people continue to pursue the meaning of freedom, these things will never cease to be! - Gol D. Roger
Here are a few innovations in Aion that I think will be seen in most subsequent MMOs from now on:
1. manastone, enchants and dyeing by everyone- customize the look and stats on your equipment 2. gliding, best of both worlds, flying without making terrain obsolete 3. fluid combat, amazing special effects, particles and sound 4. level limited rifting - visit hostile faction in their lands yet discourage ganking
PS (edit). I am not claiming that any of these were invented by Aion - what I am saying that it was implemented very well in Aion thus moved the genre forward by showing how to do it right (who could possibly claim that they have invented a game mechanics anyhow - there is nothing new under the Sun)
1.Not sure how the manastones and enchants work but they sound much like features from earlier games(unless they just use the same names as other games have.) dying equipment is a feature used since the inception of LOTRO.
2.I don't see how gliding is "moving the genre forward" it is probably a nice feature for this game but it is also unique to the games lore could you imagine if all games created lore around finding ways to make the avatars glide? Doesn't sound much like fun to me.
3.The two mmo's I play I can say from what I've seen don't look as good graphically as AION does but they are in settings that I'm much more preferential to right now, and again I haven't played Aion so I might actually be inclined to agree the combat is fluid etc.
4.Not quite sure I'm totally understanding what this feature brings "new" to the table but it just may well.
In the end though we as a community shouldn't look down upon you or as if you are even wrong because in some ways AION is moving the genre forward. I felt the same way about LOTRO and I still do because on the horizon we have TOR which is a spiritual successor to what LOTRO has done by incorporating your avatar richly into the story/lore of the game itself.
I think what we also all need to consider is the track record of releases throughout the history of mmo's , for every AION and LOTRO there's a Darkfall,AOC,POTBS,SWG and the list goes on. And while all of those games still are going they all have at the least questionable starts and for me atleast at this time I'm all for a company that can release a mostly bug free fluid working game.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Tell me what game does all this? I know of none. 2.I don't see how gliding is "moving the genre forward" it is probably a nice feature for this game but it is also unique to the games lore could you imagine if all games created lore around finding ways to make the avatars glide? That is because you never tried it. Flying makes terrain useless. Think of all the terrain features ruins, towers, hills, peaks, valleys, ramps, stairs etc that you don't care about at all once you fly up high in a straight line. Gliding makes terrain essential. You seek out high spots and glide (fast travel) to lower ones. There are paths that let you glide further, there are paths that may aggro mobs while in flight etc. You may catch updrafts etc. It is great fun. It is a mini game onto itself.
3.The two mmo's I play I can say from what I've seen don't look as good graphically
Aion's special effects are nothing short of impressive. As a templar when my Face Smash triggers it brings a smile on my face. It is *EXTREMELY* impressive! You pick up the opponent spin him/her around over your head and smash them into the ground, with an explosive sound and particle effect. It is a breathtaking. The other day I was figthing a gladiator - he was wearing me down - my face smash triggerred twice ina row - now we just got even in HP - but I think it must have really scared him - as he turned tail and ran.
4.Not quite sure I'm totally understanding what this feature brings "new" to the table but it just may well. Rifting opens a gateway between two equal level zones. Only players within that level range may travel across. Players may purchase a kisk, by placing the kisk on the ground it allows them to resurrect in enemy territory (as long as the enemy does not find the kisk and destroys it). This promotes combat between reasonably equal level players. My only complaint is that there aren't enough rifts, you are not told what level they are and they are usually hidden. There should be an easier way to get to them, maybe by doing a guest that allows you to access rifts easily. So it is a good idea but needs to be streamlined even more. Most of the time rifts are reported in region chat by other players.
I play this game a lot and enjoy it but there is absolutly nothing here that is innovative or has pushd the genre on. The last game in my mind to do that (from this latest generation of games ) is Eve. Other than that it is all variation on a theme

i agree totally and whats more is its almost like ppl want all the fun sucked out of a game these days or they aint happy

Tell me what game does all this? I know of none. unless you consider that the "skin" is from the last weapon or armor you had you cant just select a skin you have to have the item in your inventory and since all the early weapons look alike changing skins is stupid only use for it is to trick your enemy into thinking your a lower lvl

flying is not gliding and vice versa where it is nice to be able to fly its extremly limited unless you go to the abyss why give me wings if i can rarely use them fully

Those are all candy feaures only but the core of the game remain unchanged - grinding mobs and quests for xp in order to achieve end game represented by level cap and/or rare gear.
All Aion does, is making mix of the features enjoyable for some players but that is far from moving the genre anywhere.

Duh! Geez that goes without saying, what do you think would happen to the coolest armor if everyone could make them for f
flying is not gliding and vice versa where it is nice to be able to fly its extremly limited unless you go to the abyss why give me wings if i can rarely use them fully So go to the abyss to use them. Face Smash should hit for about 300 - default damage, that's about twice as big as the default damage of Shining Slash to strongest normal attack a Templar has. On top of this you get the various boosts. That makes it probably the strongest attack a Templar has (up to the levels I have been 32). On top of that it knocks the opponent down, interrupting whatever it was doing.
rifting is very aggravating your right on this the rifts need to be labeled better or something as they usually appear at the wrong time but since you need a small task force when you go through em i never saw a reason to even bother
I went through many times alone - whoever is on the other side will happily join in a group - but you are right the outgoing rifts should be labeled better.
Aion is a step backwards for me. After Age of conan and the intresting combat system there comes a popular game and brings us back to auto-attack. Combat system is time to change really.

1. This isn't an innovation, it has been done before in numerous MMOs
2. Well, no other MMO specifically offers this form of locomotion, but it's a stretch to call it an innovation in my opinion. In essence it's just a very limited, short term form of rapid transit
3. This is an entirely subjective opinion about a mechanic that many MMos share. For example, I think the very static nature of combat in Aion that routinely inhibits and slows down the action in deference to animations is a step backwards for the genre. It feels like a child of 2003
4. Rifting isn't level-appropriate: a wide range of levels are able to access rifts in a given zone. It also leads to a great deal of ganking and does not cultivate or promote competitive PvP. It's basically a system that facilitates the random ambushing of players focusing on PvE by larger groups. And since it's more limiting than simply opening up widespread world PvP (which many other MMOs do), it's not innovative, but rather another step backwards

yes but when the last 6 weapons you had all look exactly the same whats the point flying is not gliding and vice versa where it is nice to be able to fly its extremly limited unless you go to the abyss why give me wings if i can rarely use them fully So go to the abyss to use them. What is the problem exactly? You make it sound as if you could *never* use them. its not that you can never use them its the fact that ncsoft acts like they made a game that involves wings to get around when you can only use your wings in one area it makes the wings nigh useless just because a game looks good doesnt mean its a good game when i played my templar i noticed alot of flair with no substance sure it looks great when i slam down on an enemy but when it does almost nil damage it makes it a moot point

when it procs which for many ppl in templar chat it was hard to make it happen but even if it does the cost of the books are so high wouldnt have been able to afford em anyway rifting is very aggravating your right on this the rifts need to be labeled better or something as they usually appear at the wrong time but since you need a small task force when you go through em i never saw a reason to even bother
