OK rant time.
I hate invasion of privacy in mmos.
I hate inspections, I hate that every pos asshat needs to see what i've done in game before hand.
From WoW to Eve some dickhead wants to see my stuff!
Well it's mine (or atleast until you kill me for it). Dont ask what i've done, dont try to find out my spec, my skill training its all personal information. Don't look at the stats on my gear, fuck!!!! I don't even want you to know what my class or skill template is!!!
The less you know about what I do in my video game the better.
All of these asshat programs like WoWs gear score and stupid fucking armory's are so lame. Why do you need to know?
If i was a knight would you walk up to me and tap on my armor to see its thickness or check how sharp my blade is? would you ask around and see who I killed? no of course not because if you touch or even ask about my stuff I would kill your ass.
A lot of these developers think their delivering a service to players by publishing information of every ones characters on the net, taking away players privacy. Giving the elitist pricks ammo to be even bigger douche bags.
I work hard for my stuff and instead of using crappy mechanics to sneak a peak at my stuff or achievements in a game maybe you could be a god damn human being and get to know me first and just ask.
Its pretty simple imo.
"hey what dungeons have you beaten?" FU!
Hey whats your Api? FU!
Hey Why are you using that spec? FU!!!
Its all bullshit and I hate it. I tell my friends and decent people that are willing to socialize what spec I am or what im training and what adventures i've been on. some ass hat that wouldn't give me the time of day shouldnt be able to just right click me and see my shit or visit a site and pre judge my gaming capabilities.
So I say fuck the man! and no!!! You can't see my stuff!!!!!!!!!!
*Rant off*

I absolutely agree. I'd rather find out players are newbs just by playing with them. I don't mind teaching and helping players. Thats part of the game for me. And I appreciate it tenfold when others are willing to teach and help me. Why is that so rare these days? I suppose because so much can be done, and is expected of you to have done, solo these days. Ah well. Good post. Couldn't have said it better.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
I think the real question is, "do you feel better?".
As far as rants go, that was pretty decent.
Acidon
btw: I agree with you. Someone can go look at any stats they want. But they don't actually know the circumstances behind any of it.
You cant walk around in public and expect privacy. We can see your armor and weapons too if you have them out. Get over it.
can you see stats? can you see enchants? skill templates? the gamers achievments. sure visually you should see my character but thats where it should end imo.
Everything else should be information i want to give to someone thats either my buddy ingame or a person thats willing to conversate on a decent level and nicely asks to see my stuff.

meh as far as gear goes i never cared if other people could see it or not. but my spec on the other hand and how i have my character built is my buisness, and i have it set up how i like it. i don't need some tool that thinks he knows everything about my class because his friend plays one trying to tell me how i should play my character. and would deffinitly hate it if people could see every little thing i've done in a game anytime they please.
I've played several games where there was a public option to see gear. I think FFXI is one example. I always found it to be the MMO version of dogs sniffing each other's asses. You can always tell when you are been checked out, when that person sits there for those uncomfortable 1 to 2 mins not saying a word, judging you by a bunch of pixels and data. The whole gear and spec elitism is pretty fucking lame and you have way too many douchebags practicing it possibly missing some fun groupings and/or raids over numbers segregation.
The worst offenders are actually F2P Asian grinders which are based around item stats. There are the horror stories of people spending thousands of dollars in games like Maple Story to get the "perfect" weapon of piece of equipment. Your self-worth is based off of the fake numbers your gear has and is you don't have that perfect item, your social standing is lessened and websities dedicated to these games will lambast the person who only has the 131 Att Spear s opposed to the person who spent hundreds more to make a 135 Att spear. See Basil Market
Having said this, I never made a effort to hide my data in the games that I could, since I usually played solo anyways and felt that if there were people around making judgments based on stats and data, I would want to be left out of all that faggotry. I never said no to a team or a group so anyone inviting was doing so based on someone who could help them out and try and get them some treasures and have some fun while doing it. That's all I could offer as a teammate. I may not have had the best gear or been the best "tuned" or "keyed" or whatever the fuck it is called, but I didn't make huge mistakes that got people killed, never took treasures unless no ones wanted them, and tryed to be someone who made the game a little more enjoyable. That's all I could do and left the numbers games for the elitist douchebags of the world.
For the most part, I agree. I mean, I've been known to inspect players of the same class and level range just to see what sort of gear I'm expected to wear for that level range, but the level of gear dependency is rediculous. I don't mind the inspect ability, but because players often use it to refuse others rights into groups and whatnot I'm actually against the idea. I would even take it a step further and say DPS parse programs are just as bad. It's majorly annoying to have my DPS (or lack thereof in some cases) thrown in my face after every fight. Sometimes when I group with players, I platy seriously but sometimes I just like to relax a bit. Maybe I'm drinking a Mountain Dew. Maybe I'm eating a candy bar. I'm proving to be no danger to the gorup, and we're still progresing into the dungeon, so what if my DPS isn't over 5k? Maybe I've got my eye on a TV show. Call me lazy if you want, but having my DPS tested every single fight is absolutely annoying to me. I can't help but feel like I'm taking a test instead of playing a video game.
It is simple, many want to see what they are missing out on,and many want to see if they are the best,if you have something better they want it lol.
I lost track at how many times, noobs have to ask the entire server, what build they should have or what class they should play, people should just play their own game,i assume that is why they spent their money on it.
There is a third reason why people do checks and that is to see if someone has been cheating, but usually it is just nosey people, that can't think for themselves,so they want to copy everyone else.
Personally i don't care if someone checks my stuff, but i don't want to hear any response unless it is constructive.I often would be out farming using a weird gear setup, then get a party invite. Then right away some idiot has to start telling me ,i can't use that gear to tank or DPS or what ever. Then you know they are sending PM's to the others, because all of a sudden the others start checking you. What i loved to do in those situations was to wait until the last minute before swapping my gear to piss them off ,then they look like the idiot for opening their mouth premature.
Sometimes i would have a class combo like sam/whm in FFXI for farming, when i joined the group, before i even get a chance to change my sub class,i start getting ass hats telling me i can't be a sam/whm lol.So i can see your concern, too often people want to open their mouths ,like they are mr.know it all and everyone else is a dummy.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Stats yes I should see them. AC is an obvious one. If you have armor on that is super protective it should be obvious at a glance. Strength and etc are debatable, but yea I think those too should be viewable. Something about the additions should be seen, maybe its runes that make the strength or something else but there is no good reason why additions should be invisible.
I liked how Everquest handled this back in the day. If someone inspected your gear, a message popped up, "so-and-so is inspecting your equipment."
If you didn't want them to look, you moved a few feet away.

Not every game has set armor sets with set stats that everyone knows about or can check on a armor guide site. Certain items that people work hard to craft or achieve should remain secret unless a person feels they want them to see.
I have no issue with helping new players, you wanna know my skill template? fine just ask nicely. You wanna see my armor ok ill link you my paper doll in whisper. I have no problem giving out my information to people that ask nicely and don't intend to use it to flame me.
What I have an issue with is people that send you a whisper demanding such information. I have an issue with a developer like blizzard that makes everyones information public. I would also like to point out that not every game is carebear, certain games have pvp in them and to have people see your stuff is an disadvantage.
In WoW a horde character can inspect an alliance character and then go visit the armory website and see his/her pvp stats. Wtf is that!!!?!?!
Other games do this also.
IN Eve its not so bad people can ask for an API to see your skills and stuff but normally you only give it to people you trust. You cant see fittings and rigs so you have no idea how their fit for combat.
Certain things shouldnt be easily seen. Things like faction standing, passed achievements should be totally private because that stuff is used by elitist assholes to refuse people groups and just generally hate on other players with less experience.

Any mmo that has a Raid progression system or pvp ladder system thats been released since WoW came out that has these types of piracy invasion mechanics have this type of stuff going on.
Its not so much inspections but the access to a persons entire mmo history in that particular game that people use as ammo against them.
As an example I just bitched out my brother because he tossed out two nice people from a raid because their gear score wasnt as high as his.............
I would kick his ass in real life if he wasnt my brother for that.

Agreed on the spirit of the OP.
There needs to be a shift happening in order to combat these min/maxers besides lowering numbers down to D&D level.
This is just another step.
Plus if you were realistically looking at someone's armor, and knew it, you would've studied that specific type before.
(I think this one element of realism has to be in MMOs)

One of the best features added with the social clothing tab in Anarchy Online was the "inspect" function. Not because of the abilty to automatically see every item another player has on, but for the fact you have the option to disable it on your end.
I love the /tell messages of "Dude, I can't inspect your stuff.", to which I usually reply "No, you can't.".
]
Social clothing isn't really needed though, more games should add what UO did with the dyeable cloaks/robes that you can put above your armor. Also, what would be even better is a skill called Snooping (UO-style, but applies to paperdoll as well).
I don't really mind if there are people checking my stuff out, actually, as long as they are polite about it. Especially if they have some tips and pointers on how I can improve my stuff to survive better in the game world. What I don't appreciate though, is when I get laughed at just because my stats are not up to date. I cannot help wondering if those people just do it for the laughs, or to make themselves feel better, and while I understand, I do not like being the butt of jokes.
Thankfully though, I've never been kicked out of groups because of my gear being lacking.
Main characters:
Jinn Gone Quiet (Guild Wars)
Princess Pudding (Guild Wars)
Now that I think about it a bit, I have been told that my gear was really bad before. I never took offense, just replied "yea it is". I never got kicked I guess because gear or no gear I play my class to the 9's.
I absolutely loathed that. Was so nice when they added the toggle to not see those messages.
**If i was a knight would you walk up to me and tap on my armor to see its thickness or check how sharp my blade is? would you ask around and see who I killed? no of course not because if you touch or even ask about my stuff I would kill your ass. **
If I were the King (Raid Leader) and I asked to see your Armor (Gear) you would show it without bitching...
If I asked where your trained (Spec) again you would tell me..
So your whole If I were a Knight is BS
I really don't mind armories and inspections and people comparing achievements.
What I do mind is people jumping on me because my gear isn't "up to date". Let me give you an example.
I take my level 73 DK to the Ebon Hold for training. Some other DK is there as well. He starts in on me about my gear, which was at the time blue mid-60's stuff from BC...fairly decent gear for a 65 DK, but of course, I'm a 73 now, so as good stuff, if not a shade better, is available from WotLK questing.
Assuming that the instant you hit 68, you're off to Northrend to get the quest gear. Stupid assumption, IMHO. I don't powergrind any of my WoW toons...I like to take my time, see the sights, run some quests, just enjoy being in the world. I'm funny that way.
The gear I've got is perfectly OK, fine stuff for solo questing in Northrend. The leveling game doesn't require uber gear in WoW, you all know that. There are only two circumstances where you really need to be obsessed about gear; if you PvP a lot, or if you're raiding. Well, I'm not really that much into nonstop PvP, and you're not going to be doing any raiding until you hit 80 anyways, so why obsess over gear before then?
But this guy does not let up.."Oh, that stuff is fine for questing in Nagrand, but you should have better stuff". Only if you're playing this ridiculous keep up with the Joneses mentality of being obsessed with your gear when there is very litte reason to aside from pure potlach reasons of passing the inspections of people who are obsessed with gear as you're leveling up a toon.
Which I am not.
Ironically, back when my 'lock was a mere 49, some guy gave me a tell and asked if this were a twink toon. I said no, I just happen to be at 49 atm. He then proceeded to tell me I was better geared than most twinks - which is why he thought I might be one. I took this as a compliment, which was as it was intended.
So inspections can work both ways.
My guidlies have offered friendly tips on what I should be looking for on various items from examining my toons in the armory, so it's a helpful thing, especially when you're not as stat obsessed as some. Helps with raiding, and I appreciate the advice from players more knowledgeable than me about that, particularly when everyone in a raid needs to be sporting their best gear to support the raid group, to do what it is they're supposed to be doing, tanking, or DPS, or healing.
But I can definitely appreciate the OP's take on this. Sometimes you get unwanted attention that is at a minimum annoying.

Wow. You play with some real jerks. I never heard of such thing happening in 10 years of mmos.
WoW, being WoW, is filled with jerks who announce in the city trade chat channel, while looking for warm bodies for a PUG, that they WILL inspect your armory page before they deign to offer you an invite to their Naxx PUG or whatever. Also they'll need to see your achievements (probably because they want to know if you've done the raid before).
Every so often I'd just fire off into trade "LF grey geared 10s for Hogger group, must not know fight, we're looking for wipes!" to parody these loons.
I've been in PUGs where it was announced that if you don't DPS up to the "proper" level on Patchwerk you'll be kicked from the raid and we'll find someone who does.
Plenty of jerks about.

I totally agree. I don't care why/what/who; how I do my job is none of anybodies damn business as long as I am getting the job done. If I have nothing to do with them, even less reason for them to care.

This is all true! And it is that same WoW community of elitists who have created the now WoW Hater community. Keep in mind though when you try and analyze that statement, that the WoW Elitist was created by using the tools that Blizzard provided to them, without those tools, they wouldn't be able to see any of those things they ask for.
To the OP, rant or not, I AGREE!
(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)
I absolutely loathed that. Was so nice when they added the toggle to not see those messages.
Wasn't there an option to toggle it so that players couldn't inspect you? I can't remember. I know there was one for trading. Anyway even though I had some of the best gear in the game I rarely got inspected and players would usually have the courtesy to ask if it was okay first (maybe because it was so obvious when they inspected you). Would be nice if you could do something in WoW like the old tin-foil hat April Fool's joke they did a while back. I don't see why everyone needs to know what my gear and spec is (if it's that important they could just ask me). Most experienced players could tell what the general quality of your gear is just by looking at your character anyway as most of the high end stuff has unique models and textures.
