Why does everyone hate World of Warcraft? It obviously can't be that bad if...

jph12jph12 Member Posts: 19

Its the biggest MMORPG ever made, most popular, highest earning, and by far the most dominant. It'll be a long time before an MMORPG overpowers WoW, and with the new graphical update with Cataclysm, add a few more years onto that. The Lore of WoW also makes the limit of expansions quite high indeed. Why would Blizzard stop making a game that makes them billions? Only when WoW becomes very unpopular will that "crime" be dealt. So basically, I'm wondering why that with everyone thread posted, someone comes along and insults WoW. With 13 million active members, all paying £10 per month, it can't be that bad a game, can it? So why dis it as frequent as people do?

Thanks!

I think the mcdonalds argument is used frequently, which is absurd imo. When I played wow, I had fun (most of the time at least).

If you stand VERY still, and close your eyes, after a minute you can actually FEEL the universe revolving around PvP.

I don't hate it. I just don't like it. I prefer complicated PvP sandboxes so quite opposite to what WoW really is.

Although I hate people for saying it must be good because 11 milions is playing it. It's like saying Britney Spears is better at music because more people listen to her rather than, for example, Chopin.

Part of the reason I stopped playing (and I don't hate the game) was the fact that with other mmo's, you could have this feeling of doing something or exploring an area that you kinda felt not many other people had done before.  With WoW, I lost that feeling when it hit its heyday.  I feel like anywhere I go and anything I do has been done thousands of times before.

For example, I remember farming the gorge of King Xorb (sp?) and thinking man this is cool. Like my own little spot.  I wouldn't see anyone the whole time, but I never felt like the world was dead because chat was constant.  I don't think WoW can ever give me that feeling.

Another reason.  WoW became a little too un-fantasy for me.  Haris Pilton, Mohawk grenades, etc.  If you like that, sort of thing, that's fine.  I have nothing against you.  But for myself, those things take me out of the fantasy world and almost return you to the real world that I am trying to "escape" from.

It's simple, they hate it because other people on this forum hate it.

they can't think for themselves, have to go with the crowd.

Theres a huge difrent between listen to spears music, and playing a mmo.

I like wow, but i ain't playing it because it bores me while it is very addicting.

Their free trial is most evile.

Most popular does not equal best, its simple as that.

Doesn't mean I hate it, just means I don't love it.

because its not cool to like things that are popular.

funny thing is though, ask these guys what theyre playing if not wow.  I mean, if ya know anything about MMO's you'll know theres not much else out there.. at all.  Most of them fall very short of delivering anything wow has to offer.

of course, you'll get a lot of responses about how wow's pvp is crap. or how its too simple and too easily accessible.  How the graphics are cartoony.  But just ask these folks "what are you playing then?".  I bet you can shoot 10x the amount of holes in any other MMO theyre trying to compare to WoW.

Well not everyone hates it if they did it wouldn't be so popular.

Most people who say they don't like WoW have been there and done that. I myself have recently left WoW after a frustrating few weeks of trying to raid. Do i hate the game.. yes.. Do i love it as well? yes. However i'm afraid WoW no longer has anything  to offer me. I've played practically every class, done almost every raid. My problem is that its to much WORK to get into a raid. Its being taken over by elitists. I your DPS isnt blah blah or you cant prove that you have expereince doing a certain raid then you arent allowed.. it becomes a hipocritical cycle.

I couldn't raid higher end raids because i couldn't upgrade my weapons.

I couldn't upgrade my weapons because i couldn't get in higher raids.

i couldnt get in higher raids because my dps was lacking (slightly)

my dps was lacking slightly because i couldnt upgrade my weapons.

thats my reason to HATE WoW. i however made alot of friends on WoW and if i dont talk to them i feel sad because we've become close. =[I also experienced mostly all the content and the game kept me occupied for a few years so i cant outright hate it.

IF i bored any one with my words this will simplify it all

WoW gets boring after you experience the content. Its too cartoony for me. End game is full of impatience elitist nerds who won;'t let you raid because you simply never did the fight before.

Many people hate the game because of what it's done to the industry. As successful as it is, WOW unfortunately has encouraged far too many game developers to attempt to make the same kind of game searching for some of WOW's $. A lot of us are tired of watching our genre stagnate the way it is.

A small ray of hope: Some people believe that WOW plateaued shortly before they made serious moves to start making their new mmo. That would have been wise and makes complete sense. As WOW begins it's inevitable decent (it will live on for a very long time though), maybe we'll see a much healthier array of games in the genre. One can only hope.

There isnt really anything 'bad' about WoW. The reason for a lot of the hate is because it is the popular choice in MMOs right now and has been that way since its release. People tend to not like the popular choice after a while.

Now, while its the biggest MMO (pop, money, etc) it is aging. And like anything thats been out for a while people do tend to get bored of it. This is where another part of the whole 'hate' comes from. A lot of people have grown tired of WoW and want something new to play. Sadly the last few offerings in the MMO genre have either been disasters or seem to be very close in terms of gameplay and looks. People tend to blame Blizzard and WoW for this, when in fact its the other developers who should be pointed at. Instead of trying to be different or changing up the genre, they aim to be as close to WoW as possible which turns a lot of people off.

Who wants to play a game that looks/sounds/plays like WoW when they left WoW because it was becoming redundant in their eyes?

Thankfully there are a few companies out there that have at least attempted to make something different (AV and Icarus are a couple of these studios, Masthead will hopefully be as well) rather than trying to cash in on the WoW-like aspects (Alganon).

Basically I guess what I am saying is that the hate is mostly due to taht fact that players are bored and tired of the same old same old. And when you are sick of chicken every night for dinner, the last thing you want is more chicken - especially when all thats different about it is that they added a sprig of greens to the plate to make it look pretty.

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

I played for just over 4 years from launch, I loved the game. To this day its still the best all around mmo out there (theres a reason its been the #1 mmo since release), I quit because I got bored of the game. I'm not really sure why people hate the game to be honest, but pretty much WoW will be the butt of all comments until something takes over the top spot. Its funny though because WoW pretty much gets blamed for anything and everything on these forums. The only other video game that I put as much playtime in as WoW was counterstrike.

WoW is pretty much the only mmo that caters to all playstyles, people play niche mmo's and don't understand why the general public doesn't share their love of the game. Which is another theory of mine why people hate WoW, they blame it for their game not being that popular in comparison.

I dont care what the game did to the industry.  You guys want to know what it did?   It took away staring at my fucking spell book for 10 minutes after every fight.

What else did it do?  First good pvp system I ever played.  What else did it do?  It added instanced pvp for a quick satisfaction.

What else did it do?  It sold MMO's to the mainstream and gave almost every mmo that came after it the chance to get soild funding.

What did it do for me?  Becuase of the company that makes it I got a cool job of being a game tester for a couple years.

What it does everyday on this website?   Gives losers a leg up on other nerds.  Im more mature and intelligent and skilled than you are because I hate wow.

Why I hate the game?   THE GRAPHICS WERE HORRIBLE THEN AND STILL SUCK

  • madeuxmadeux Member Posts: 1,786

Wow is like Danielle Steele or John Grisham.... They sell more books than anyone, and lots of people like them... but that hardly makes them "great authors" or even worth reading for many of us.  The appeal to the masses.

Some of us prefer Douglas Adams or Tom Robbins... Far greater authors, with less mass appeal.

It's not that WoW is "bad",  we're just looking for something original, with more depth, and a different focus.

    Nope.
If WoW would be best everyone would be playing it. It's best for certain people. Some other people like more challenge (FFA full loot PvP). Believe it or not but many PvPers wish there would be some game with budget like WoW. But we won't see it for a while since all the devs started making WoW copies and we are left with only bunch of companies that dare to be different with their games (Darkfall, Fallen Earth, EVE, Ryzom etc).

Me and my 10 + RL friends that play mmos would 100% agree with this statement. Even the 2 slaggers that are still playing WOW. By their own admission, they are only still playing because of the friends they've made in game.

  • TrihfluTrihflu Member Posts: 97

WoW isn't a bad game, but why people hate it is because it's plagued us with hundreds of WoW clones.  When you get bored of that pace of gameplay you don't have any other option than single-player games.  At least this is why I don't like it.  But that doesn't mean I'm never gonna play it (again :P).

    This statement is false.

  • uquipuuquipu Member Posts: 1,516

People who are burnt out on WoW won't relieve their burnout by playing another MMO or video game for that matter.

You need a radical change to relieve burnout, like real life golf or bowling.

Right, so what your saying is that a game with 25,000 active players per month, can be better than something which has 13 million active players per month? There is no logic in that. If the 25,000 active players per month MMORPG was better, than surely it would be the other way around? And seeing as it isn't, it is safe to assume that World of Warcraft is the most dominant/best game the MMORPG genre has witnessed, and unless someone is prepared to spend many a million, it is likely to be the best game within the MMORPG genre for the distant future beyond with what we can comprehend wih, even if it's reign has ended.

    Thanks!

To me it's just an easy-mode item-based, mindless-grind game, filled with the kind of pseudo-players that can only keep up in that type of challengeless environment.

I don't "hate" it, but I don't respect it as a game either. And the kind of "players" that come out of it  can be really helpless when faced with an actual gameplay situation requiring player skill instead of button mashing and uber item use. Since they usually immediately broadcast their issues to everyone in the game, I think they contribute in a big way to the general disrespect for WoW.

Almost as many Germans followed Adolf Hitler and thought the holocaust was a great idea....

By the way OP, do you play the game?

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

WoW.. i hear and read these 3 words like 10 times each day..

Those who hate WoW.. are probably just bored of kids comparing everything with WoW.

In my opinion i don't think there is a game that is better than another.. eveyone have different taste.. To me WoW is just like Pop and Rap music.. Simple, overated and not creative
