Only to a handful of people. Most consider it a singlle player console game that requires a monthly fee. Which I would assume is why the majority that tried it left in the first place. 10-20k subs is about all that needs to be said really lol.

And before someone says the sub numbers are fine or that I have no proof the subs are that low.

This is there 3rd free trial and they've gone the route of DDO with it. There is a free demo for some many levels that you can play for as long as you want for free. Sure it's just the tutorial area, but DDO's free demo thing was similar and they eventually went free to play because the interest just wasn't there lol. Of course DDO was around for far longer than CO has been before it got to that point. CO apparently is trying to set a record here lol. Pay to pay to Free to play in 6 months.... go go speed racer goOoO.

Haha, that reminds me of a reviewer who called the original Night of the Living Dead the best horror movie shot in Pittsburgh.

In my experience CO is a fun game for a month at least, more if you play it really casually. It's just that the content is thin.

That's a fantastic opinion you have there, though I'd really like to hear some facts to support this particular opinion.

The last time they offered a free weekend through steam, the client didn't finish patching before the free weekend was up.  Before you say it was my internet, I downloaded the client through steam in <30 minutes, which was 4 times the size of the patch.  Apparently CO is so great, Cryptic doesn't want anyone new to try it out without paying!

No doubt its a good game.  It has alot of very inovatve stuff.   But it lacks the ability to keep players interested long enough to keep paying monthly subs.  Even thier forums have slowed down to a crawl compared to even two or three weeks ago.  People are leaving.

End game rewards lack severely.  Cryptic has stated that end game rewards (Item rewards, drops, craftable items) will always have only marginal benefits.  They dont want CO to be a game that is gear driven like WoW.   Wich is fine, but without meaningfull end game rewards, it makes doing end game content not even worth the effort.   Because once you hit the level cap, you super hero is already about as good as its ever going to get.  Even taking the time to get those pretty purple end game items wont do much.  So once you hit level 40...  you basicly beat the game.   Nothing meaningfull left to do in the way of meaningfull character progression.   And its not like CO has alot of End Game content to do anyway.

And since there is very little End Game content, people can always roll alts.  But as someone above me said, the content is really thin.   In order to reach the level cap, you have to do the almost all of the missions/quests in the entire game.   Its like playing CoD single player over and over.   The exact same missions/quests in practically the exact same order.  Even the Alt-O-holics are getting bored of it.

As Ive said before..  Its a good game with alot of potential.  But for now its just a filler game.  Something different to play if you need a break from your current mmo, or untill something better comes along.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

The theme/genre for CO appeals to casual gamers, but the open build / classless power/skill system  is actually most suited towards experienced players or people who want to read and think about how to build their character.

Most of the gameplay in CO involves the reptillian part of the brain, just like WoW and CoX, but the skill selection is certainly more intellectual than in WoW and CoX, because CO just has more viable fun combinations and more freedom.

I played CoX for years, and I gave it a shot with WoW, but the combat in those games is too slow clunky.  I have also had my fill of "healer/tanker/dps" for this lifetime, I am sick of that play style.  CO goes beyond those stale categories, and while some people might abuse the freedom or feel lost in it, it is more satisfying to pull off a good character.  For example I have a space marine in the style of a W40k army leader, and he has access to divine style healing powers, along with his machine gun, flamethrower etc, for a kind of heal-tank.  A lot of freedom to make different characters from different genres.

Cryptic is trying a Customer Development approach to MMO creation.

    Yawn!

Not counting the MMORPG haters (bottem of the barrel) because thats all they do is hate.  Champions easily outdoes the other superhero MMO game.  It far surpasses other Triple AAA games.

I see a small problem here. There's only 2 super hero MMOs.

dont agree, but also dont hate

I have a lifetime account but I cant bring myself to login really

in my opinion, and this doesnt mean I begrudge anyone elses fun, this game is boring, bug-filled, and just so-so.

Compared to COH/V (which I also think is bleh) I dont see a great upgrade.

You say it is the BEST game out there though you havent given any reasons why.

    Cryptic Employee much?

The BEST game out there really is WoW in terms of polish, gameplay, and subs. Not saying I like WoW, but still CO could never be better than WoW. In my opinion CO is a unpolished piece of buggy crap. Sorry but anything made by Cryptic could NEVER be the best game ever. NEVER.

  • KexoKexo Member Posts: 84

To call this a rip off would be too kind. Its like a MMO without the MMO and a free to play to play game except you gotta pay $15 a month.

Why anyone would want to maintain a sub to this massive scam is beyond me.

  • EmeraqEmeraq Member UncommonPosts: 1,063

Still?  Did you say "Still" the best game around... First it would have to be the best game to begin with in order for it to STILL be the best game, in addition to that a significant amount of time needs to pass for me to buy that something is 'still the best'.... And in my opinion it's never been the best game around.

I bought this game for $10 off steam the other day and have played it maybe once for what it's worth. I'd like to be able enjoy it so I didn't waste $10 but I have 0 desire :/.

I blame Arkham Asylum. (The game, not my time on the inside ;) )

We need a bit more than that. Why is the game better than the rest?

List the things that the games does better than the rest instead of just posting an opinion without any explanations. I don't mean to be rude or anything but just starting a thread saying something is great but not explaining why is just a waste of bandwidth because there is really nothing to discuss there.

So: 5 or ten points to what is so good with the game please.

That is also just an opinion, except with the player numbers.

I would say Guildwars is far more polished (based on the patch notes and what the patches fixes, also I never saw a bug in GW during more than a years play) but that is just my opinion, to be sure we would have to compare all reported bugs from the games.

Gameplay is a personal experience and impossible to compare between games. Some people loves a certain game play others don't. And to say someone is right means others are wrong, but can they really if they have fun?

We can measure the amount of mobs, quests and so on of course but then would probably EQ be the best MMO ever and that is also not a good way to measure things.

To truly compare if a game is better than another we would need a long list of measurable stuff, and player numbers just isn't enough, sometimes do many people do something stupid just because it is popular.

If you gave points for numbers of players, graphics (polygons in a normal size character model, it must be measurable), how good it runs on a certain normal computer, reported in bugs, size of the world, number of npcs, bosses and mobs, quests and some other factors we could actually compare fairly which game is best, but the one that is most fun to play is a totally personal experience and therefor a waste of time to compare.

My point anyways is that it is very hard to compare MMOs and your argument is only slightly better than the OPs (you at least stated 3 not so good points but that is better than nothing). Wow might be the best MMO, that is a possibility but your argument isn't enough to prove or disprove it.

But the writing was on the wall and I called it fair and square- this game was not going to do great. The content was paper thin and they were nerfing us to kingdom come. The launch day hell-nerf patch was pure crap.

People like you said I was deluded or something. Now here we are not so long after my post and people are jumping from this burning ship with alarming speed

I tried it with some apprehension, given the bad press, but actually it's quite a solid game so far as it goes, and I can certainly see myself playing it for a few months at least, more if the problems are sorted out.  The trouble is, it was obviously pushed out unfinished (same as other recent MMOs like AoC, WO, TR).  Blame Atari, I guess.

On the plus side, it has something no other MMO out there except CoX can offer: the ability to create a unique character in terms of looks and powers.  This is quite a major feature really, for certain types of players, including me.

The combat is really very good indeed, and very addictive - much faster-paced than your usual MMO combat.

On the minus side: there are many little bugs, and a few major ones, still to be ironed out, and there's a fair bit of wonky balancing to be done, and there's a TON of content needs to be added, before you could say this is the MMO it was meant to be.

In an alternative universe, Cryptic would have been able to release this game finished and polished, with the full amount of content it was no doubt meant to have, and they would have released it simultaneously on 360.  It could have been a world-beater then.  The basics are there, there's just not enough flesh on them bones at the moment.

But if they do manage to polish it and give it enough content, folks coming back to it to try it out again will likely stick.  If not, it will likely fail, which would be sad.
