and which game would that be cause ive played quite a few mmos and none have done anything close to what bioware is doing with this game. if your thinkin aoc please dont respond that game was a joke
Well, FFXI doesn't belong in that list then I guess. You had to be quite a high level to be able to do the story, but yeah it was there and it was gewd.
im a really big fan of final fantasy games but XI imo was horrible. it seems kinda pointless to have a class based story at higher lvl even if it is good. Especially if the story is utterly boring at the start of the game

What does the level matter? What does the story of the early game matter? It's there, it's good, and TOR won't have the first nor the best class-based storylines.
Hopefully the game will come out in 2010 though, or there'll be 2 games that got ahead. That would be tragic.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
How does Star Wars: The Old Republic differ from other MMO titles?
Star Wars: The Old Republic will be similar to other MMOs but with several key innovations. Traditionally MMOs are built on three pillars; Exploration, Combat, and Progression. We at BioWare and LucasArts believe there is a fourth pillar: Story. Our mission is to create the best story-driven games in the world. We believe that the compelling, interactive storylines in Star Wars: The Old Republic are a significant innovation to MMOs and will offer an entertainment experience unlike any other.
Perhaps this is why I don't get it, I hate story driven games, i prefer having fun.
To each his own. Personally, I find story to be one of the most important parts of a game. I LOVE games with long, high-production cutscenes. I've even played a few games where I found the "playing" of the game got in the way of the story, and I wanted the interactive part to be over so I could see what happens next.
Each person's method of fun differs.
I agree , to each his own.
I do like Metal gear solid for some reason though. perhaps everyone dabbles in other areas.
But on the whole i think if i wanted to watch cutscenes all day, I'd go see Avatar in IMAX, not buy a 60 dollar game and pay 15 bucks a month :P

to the OP. I find it odd that you hate story driven games but enjoy mmos considering they are rpgs, and i take it your implying that story isnt fun. Well every game is a story in some fashion some richer than others. so your statements have reached the point of not making any sense

Actually, I think that if the developers put more emphasis on the storyline and cutscenes, games can actually someday surpass movies in terms of quality. Of course it will cost more, but you get the added interactivity as the "bonus" as well as the story.
Ironically, MGS4 is the best "movie" that I've ever seen.

SWTOR just seems like it has become Guild Wars in the Star Trek world to me. They may have a good story line, but from what I have seen it looks like it will be a more single player experience. I am fine with soloing in an mmo, but I still like to meet others and explore a big open world together. Right now unless I hear something to prove my feelings wrong I will not be giving the game a try, and will instead look forward to some of the other upcomign games.
There is a large FAQ at the main SWTOR website that points out that the game is indeed just like every other MMO out there, there is large scale exploration where you WILL meet other players, there is an opportunity to group with other players, there are MMO things to do in the game with real ppl.
People are generally getting carried away with the "Story" concept, yes it has a big story but that doesn't mean you still can't just ignore it and go grind countless mobs with your friends out in the wilderness if thats what you prefer and what makes the game feel like a proper MMO for you.
Is innovation scaring some ppl ? undoubtedly from the responses it seems to be the case. Why all the fear and hostility towards another aspect of a game that is so poorly implemented within MMO's? is having a story such an horrendous thing?

About the cutscenes... You can't make story-driving decisions on the fly, this is an RPG-based game. Cutscenes aren't going to break this game, afterall, look at most of the other Bioware games. That's what you can expect, except add in other players that factor into the "cutscenes", if you can really call them that.

well the story of the early game is pretty important cause that didnt catch me and im not gonna burn through countless hours of boredom to get to higher lvls and catch some class story that supposedly is good. TORs "might" not be the first although from the video ive seen on the website its on a different level than any mmo i have ever seen produce. so in that way it will be the first cause nothing else is really comparable at this point.
and it doesnt really matter when it comes out. you would have to be pretty naive to think its not gonna do well. Its star wars and bioware. both proven with a huge loyal fanbase. wouldnt be surprised at all if it has the mot successful launch in mmo history

If the majority of players do, I'll be sorely disappointed

It's not the first, deal with it. It might not even be the second, get used to it.
I'm not here to argue how well the game's gonna do, I'm just here to tell you that the game's innovativeness is not to be overestimated.
For the sake of useless baseless speculation though, I think the launch of this game will be as glitchy as any other MMO's. But that's just my biased opinion of course, and you have your biased opinion.

there wont be any quest reading cause its entirely voiced so dont worry there. also the combat/ progression isnt taking a hit because of this dont know what made you think that. bioware has done a great job in all there games with engaging combat and deep progression, and it would be quite odd for them to drop the ball on that now especially after some of the combat video they have shown looks pretty intense

I never needed or cared about it being the "first". Im simply saying that no one has done anything on the level of story for a class the way bioware is in this game and I am saying that because I have not played 1 mmo that has done what bioware has shown. Until I see something even comparable it will be a first for mmos
also you did imply that the game not releasing in 2010 wouldnt be good for it
And your opinion on the game being glitchy upon release has no point to it or a valid reason why it even would. that is quite trollish. im not saying it wont be buggy upon release...it might ya never know but nothing has lead me to believe or care if thats gonna happen at this point so why mention that

You seem to be very much against the fact that FFXI was the first, so what conclusions can we draw from this? You do care, enough to argue about it at least.
I wasn't saying that Bioware can't do it better, so why did you even start arguing with me?
And even if you haven't seen it, doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Silly thought.
Your opinion also has no validity to it whatsoever, so I'd consider that trolling as well. Actually no, I'm just stating my opinion, that alone won't make me a troll, and I believe it doesn't make you one either. I only think it is meaningless and irrational to think like that for no reason whatsoever. I hope you didn't use it in an effort to convince me or someone else though; you can't do that without a valid reason.
So yes, why mention that indeed?

well at this point your just not making any sense. So im just gonna agree to disagree with you. Your not understanding what I meant and im not really feelin dumbin it down for you
The kill ten rats thing is not going to be the same since there is a reliance on instanced interiors for quest content. I think the quests would be best related to how DDO did it - and that was a game where kill ten rats was significantly more interesting because of the route between those ten rats throwing you a couple curveballs through scripted events. It's something you can't get with open world philosophies applied, and I have yet to hear any complaints about execution as much as it's about the feeling of confinement. It may feel like "sheltered content", but by all means it's far more "driven content". You aren't mindlessly wandering for spawning mobs, you are entering a zone tailored to give you an experience. The kind of touch that raid zones get, but on smaller scale. I think that much will be fun, but I still trip on the thing about NPCs filling the spots in groups. People will always replace a player's presence for that of efficiency, and that will most likely make this a single-player game because people will prefer it that way (cuz it's faster).

What the? Have you even watched any of the videos or read anything more into the game? I think you might need to if this is your view of the game.
One person stated that all the popular mmos are based on popular backgrounds, like Star Trek, LOTRO and FF.
FF is a little different its more of a maleable franchise than a lore backing, but regardless, the name is there.
I feel this is an appropriate argument but slighty moot WRT to Star Wars. I mean... its freaking STAR WARS. Like i said in my opening. If they make a MUPPETS MMO, will everyone play it? YEA!!! For a month, then give it up!
Will ALOT of people try this game and say WOW!! THIS SO SO SO SO COOL! and RACE to the forums to saay how GREAT it is? YES!! Ab-so-lutely.
What im saying, is people will leave after a month, just like all modern MMOs, And populations will decline rapidly because the.. novelty of the starwars universe will go away fast and nothign will be left. Especially since the game is highly based on single player campaigns in this universe which I on one hand think is a very boring and childish universe.
I was there when the first SW's movie came up, and you know what, it was a bit "meh" other than its great special effects.
Now the 2nd and 3rd ones blew me away and I really enjoyed them.
That said, SW's a bit of a tired old IP. Lots of younger folks grew up on the 2nd series of movies, and by then the special effects were nothing really special and the story and acting was, well, very average once again.
So how much interest is there really anymore outside of some old school players? My son and his friends all play (or have played) years of WOW. None of them has the slightest interest in SW's or anything related to SW's. I suspect there's a huge crop of younger gamers (under 25) that don't really care much about SW's or its IP. (or Bioware for that matter)
This game will be different. Will it be fun and enjoyable? Perhaps, won't know until I give it a try, but different can be good so I'll wait and see.

Don't know about the Star Wars universe being boring. It's captured my attention for around 20 years now. Yes, the game is based upon a single-player campaign game, however like most everything else in this world, there is room to grow. The Old Republic looks to be big and it will keep growing, expansions and additions.
Like I've said, this game has alot going for it and it isn't even done yet.

this links to what a previous poster said about themselves and their children. Many of the "Star Wars" fans(NO NOT ALL OF YOU SO DONT RAGE ME FOR SAYING THIS) are older people who were either around for the first movies and enjoyed them or were just the right age to watch the old movies, love them, and then love SWG for a while.
I do not feel that the youth of my age (22) are completely and utterly infatuated with SW, and im not just speaking for myself, i know plenty of people who play MMOs and enjoy science fiction and most of them do not like SW at all, they even prfer Star Trek! (the new movie assisted with this conversion probably, admittedly).
I just feel the game is a lost cause, like making an MMO based on Happy Days the TV show, its just... not new anymore.

For all the people out there that enjoy the storyline of Star Wars will surely stick with the game til the end of their character's story. As for your intuitive prediction of the game only lasting more than a month, I highly doubt that Bioware will make an mmo with a storyline that only last a month, even for the hardcore players focused for 8-10 hours 7days a week.
I just feel the game is a lost cause, like making an MMO based on Happy Days the TV show, its just... not new anymore. They shoulda made a Dune MMO :P
Dune is friggin old too... geez, what is your stance on Lord of the Rings if Star Wars is too old to be "popular"?
(It's a trick question, we all know you've been smoking paint chips before putting this up. How you can undermine Star Wars' popularity is amazing, in a wtf sense)

About the cutscenes... You can't make story-driving decisions on the fly, this is an RPG-based game. Cutscenes aren't going to break this game, afterall, look at most of the other Bioware games. That's what you can expect, except add in other players that factor into the "cutscenes", if you can really call them that.
What does the level matter? What does the story of the early game matter? It's there, it's good, and TOR won't have the first nor the best class-based storylines.
Hopefully the game will come out in 2010 though, or there'll be 2 games that got ahead. That would be tragic.
well the story of the early game is pretty important cause that didnt catch me and im not gonna burn through countless hours of boredom to get to higher lvls and catch some class story that supposedly is good.

Maybe we're just scared.
I don't want people to leave combat/progression based MMOs infavor of reading quest texted and RPing.

Well, if you're not man enough to admit your loss that is a nice saving face attempt at least. No hard feelings from this side of the screen.

Obvious troll is obvious...

this links to what a previous poster said about themselves and their children.
They shoulda made a Dune MMO :P
For all the people out there that enjoy the storyline of Star Wars will surely stick with the game til the end of their character's story. As for your intuitive prediction of the game only lasting more than a month, I highly doubt that Bioware will make an mmo with a storyline that only last a month, even for the hardcore players focused for 8-10 hours 7days a week.
Dune is friggin old too... geez, what is your stance on Lord of the Rings if Star Wars is too old to be "popular"?
(It's a trick question, we all know you've been smoking paint chips before putting this up. How you can undermine Star Wars' popularity is amazing, in a wtf sense)
