You know....sometimes this first part of this (the highlighted part)... IS actually the reason a game isn't "for" some people.
There definitely ARE gamers that find EVE and Fallen Earth (those two in particular) "confusing" and have trouble with the most simple things like....oh....READING....or mousing over an object and reading to see what it says. Sure, the learning curve in those games is a bit steeper than in others, MAYBE.

There's some perfect examples of this.  A few weeks back there was a thread ripping LotRO for having a bunch of quest text; called something like, "tired of having to read all this stupid quest text" or something like that.

For LotRO.  A lore heavy, story driven MMO.

As I mentioned before, people complain about LotRO not being ffa PvP, or being able to be a monster player anywhere in middle earth.

Sometimes, "this game is not for you" means:

"This game is not for you, and if you haven't figured that out by now, YOU'RE STUPID.".

PS:  Hello Kitty is for EVERYONE.

Direct and to the point. I like it! And sadly, it's true. If you want a game done your way, go make it. Seriously. I was frustrated for years because I could find no one perfect game..and then it finally dawned on me -- there is no ... such ... thing.

Ive heard them all and Ive used a few. In particular the GTFO. I use that one, but I say something to back it up. It just pissses me off when someone compares this game Im finding interesting and goes on to compare it to wow. I like wow but at the same time I hate it for a grand of good reasons. A shitty community is one big reason. The way they do resources is another. But when I look at how wow dose it's resources like metal, I see every other mmo designer doing it. What so hard about putting copper inside a mine or a quarry. The community is another one that frag me. Weather it be not get a straight answer or none at all. Really urks me.

I find in particula one of the most ruthless and utterly heartless game is Eve. Im not a PVP fan. I think most of those who like pvp can be put in the category of "Total F*%KING Douchebag". I know some like pvp for the challenge. But in many cases some just like it to pick on other players and just to be a total a#$hole. The simple fact is that with Eve you can spend a year learning all those skill books. But  you make one mistake like forgetting switch from you primary to a secondary clone and youve just lost year of work and have to start back at zero. That to me was enough to make me quit Eve right there. One fourmist said it best "Regarding new players in EVE: "Think of yourself as a child released into a park full of pedophiles" Wht he didnt mention is that most of thoes players are KIDS. I would like to play Eve more, but with that  tidbit haging over my neck like a guillotine. I just would want to risk it. I wish their was another game like eve with the option of PVP. But all a can say with the mmos that come out these days to each his own.

Honestly, I think a game needs only one "defense" - you enjoy playing it.  That's about the only defense you can give for a game, other than arguing subjective things like "the graphics suck/the graphics rock" etc.

Do you enjoy the game?  Say so and explain why.  Do you dislike the game?  Say so and explain why.  Pretty much it can be left at that.  The only defense any game should need is word of mouth - if my friends tell me something is fun, I'll give it a try.  If I tell my friends something is fun, they'll give it a try.

I'm not going to treat defending or hating on a game like some kind of competition I need to win.  I hate EVE.  Some people love it.  I never feel the need to go over to the EVE forums and explain in exacting detail why I dislike the game, however.  I just don't like it.  So I don't play it.  I like Fallen Earth.  If people ask me about it I'll say it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I find it incredibly enjoyable.  My "defense" of the game is that I like it.  ;)

I have to admit I am so guilty of the "STFU and go back to wow". In my mind (and that doesn't make it right) only kids who need to be given everything on a silver platter play Wow. In my mind (and again that doesnt make it right) it is the definitive blow off / you no longer exist statement.

I honestly like Fallen Earth too. But I just cant play it. To me it is like pouring a bottle of cold molasses. Its just slow. I do/dont like the resource spread. I like the way vegetables and cloth material are spread  out. I like and dont like the way mining resources are spread out. I like that they can be found in quarries, but I dont like that they can be found all out in the open Go look around the hill close to a city and you can mine some copper. That's like saying I can walk a few yards away from my house and find a raw iron deposite. I still like the game though, I just wouldnt P2P.

Two game I do like but prefer one over the other. Champions Online and City of Heros/VIllians. I pick Champions over Heros/Villians. Why cause it's a lot more action based to me. Thats not to say Heros/Villians is not either. I just like Champions a lot more.

Some can write in fancy words start a nice topic or reply but you can still see its totally bullshit.

So you sometimes say eather go back to wow becouse that fancy piece of writing you start your topic with or reply  is the same as saying "going back to wow",  only its in more words and even maybe more insulting.

Just reply tl;dr and be done with it:P

    Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

I love when someone complains that something that was marketed on the box or ad for a game is not actually made available at launch and other people reply "How about you let them spend time fixing the existing X problems before introducing the additional Y items".  And by love and I "throw up".  Yes... I too would like it if the game was playable and I didn't fall through mountains and bridges (cough cough AOC).  But if I spend hard earned money on a box of cereal thinking there's a nifty prize inside, I'd feel pretty ripped off if instead I found a piece of paper that I need to fill out to send away for my nifty prize once the company has announced that they fixed the cereal to no longer make me poo uncontrollably.

Which reply do you think is better to the question "Where's my buddy passes I the box promised me?"  "We forgot buddy passes, we're working on them now and will let you know when they're ready", "The game just launched and we want to make it better before showing it off to your friends so your friends' money is worth the extra effort but thanks for your donation to live-beta haha suckers", or (I'm not sure how different it is from the previous one) "We can't fulfill all of our promises that were marketed right now because we're spending all our resources trying to fix the main item that you paid full price for."?

[Insert reason to be considered a super nerd here]

True but those screw ups wouldnt happen if they were more time to make sure everything is in working order. But something is always going to slip through the crack unfortunately and we gamets are the ones who suffer.  But with the defect of AOC at launch I really didnt let it phase me. The level drop thru I only had happen once. <atter of fact with the new exspansion comming out I will be going back to AOC. Im waiting for APB and The Old Republic to come out. Oh and the buddy codes I think that was lest out on purpose.

I do have to say #4 is actually sometimes correct as the developers only allows certain content which are usually the core of the game after a certain level.  The reason they do that could be anything (balance, progress, w/e), but sometimes I do wish they can at least provide a fun experiences so getting to that "magic" level feel less of a chore.

Some games tend to have longer learning curves too than others too, so I am throwing that out there as a consideration when considering the "it gets fun after level X" defense topic.  Some games really does get extremely fun and addctive after a certain level by design, of course that is not to say the using this defense is always valid either.

Everything else I more or less agree with almost completely.

sorry but i disagree with #5 (for this article anyways)

as a "defense" for an MMO, that is a great one..there have been many times where i've told ppl "if you don't like it then go find a new game to b!t@$ about" which is rly the same as just saying "if you don't like it then GTFO". Honestly, how is that not a good defense for an MMO?

but i do agree that #5 is a terrible defense if you use it just because some1 disagree's about some particular subject (which is not what this article is about). For example, if somebody said "omg rogues are way OP" and then got slapped with a #5, then the person who used the #5 defense should've just kept quiet. But I'm sure that we have all seen the abusive "this game sucks" or "wow this game is retarded" and such, and it's really annoying after u've seen it 10 times in 3 seconds from the same person. Those ppl deserve a #5 :)
