    This.

We are talking about Star Trek, nobody is under the illusion that  this game is not going to sell lots of boxes.

The point is, is this game going to retain all the buyers after the first month?

    I doubt so.

WAR and AoC all over again

Isn't that low for a new release? {that's not a dig, I realy am not sure} Runes of Magic has 1,455.

I dont know if X-fire numbers mean anything or not. Im sure there is a "formula" somewhere telling us what percentage of players of any given game use X-fire, and manipulation of these numbers can be employed to reach a desirable conclusion no matter whether its to prove or disprove said numbers. I personally have never used X-fire and do not personally know anyone who does. Ive heard it said that, figures lie and liars figure and that goes for X-fire numbers, political polls and numbers released by game companies as well.

Box sales don't mean too much. I bet 75% or so will quit after the first free month thats included with the game. The game is pretty terribad from when I played it. Some may like it, but I find most free to play mmorpg's a much more fullfilling experence than STO was. For me the combat was overly simplified and lacked any real depth that I could see during ob. I guess its a ok game if yer a trek fan. Sadly i'm not the biggest trek fan, and even if I was, I know a poor gameplay experence when I play one.

"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words."

They both sold lots of boxes. Cryptic is boasting about all the people who have made accounts on their website.

This may be the most intelligent comment I have read in the 6 years I have been prowling these forums.

    Really...kudos.

    Intelligence is thought provoking....eh?

    Well done Baseline.

3- 50% of them are normal Star Trek fan that dont even know what a MMO is and tought they are buying a single player game.
4- 95% of them would not play past the free month or after they found out you need to pay for this monthy (see point 3).

Also little known fact: 70-75% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

30-35%of people will not get the humor in the above statistic.

Regardless of the 1 million being real subscribers or just forum accounts, it is nice to see STO release.  Considering all this title has gone through with perpetual "we are not building a game for star trek fans" entertainment.

Well Cryptic didn't do that either, the only difference is that they didn't tell the players................

This game will have a large and faithful fanbase because of the IP. It will attract many people whom havent played an MMO and some who do. Those people will not care if there is a better MMO game, only that they are playing one in the Star Trek Universe. CO sold more copies than it should have because it was in every Best Buy in America, Star Trek will only trump this.

Many people have an account on STO forum and is not a subscriber. Like almost always, marketing boys trying to say what they are not really saying.

Yeah good point. I have an account on the web site but I've never played the game and after what I've read about it I"m not ever planning on playing it.

  • SilverdaggerSilverdagger Member UncommonPosts: 119

The account hype matches the Syfy commercials.  A lot of cut scenes and flash, but no substance.  I have no doubt that the commercials did a lot to bolster interest, but many players will feel cheated when they can't command from the bridge (as depicted in the commercials).

Didn't WAR sell 1.3 million copies? And what happened to it? They cut their numbers of servers by 75%, yes?

Believe me, I am playing STO, and it has less content than CO. The sub numbers will drop like a rock, trust me.

Seems like most of you are well educated in mmo marketing half-truths.  But most gamers are not and don't even know sites like this one exist.

Everything is half-truths though.  Take Obama's spending freeze, it's not what Americans really think it is, by the sound of it they probably think "o look he's being fiscally responsible".

But what they don't realize is that Obama in his first year raised spending by 20% on average in all those departments he is now going to freeze when in the past they would usually get a 2% increase per year.  So over the next 4 years (time frame for his freeze) department budgets would have increased to around 8%.

A freeze does not mean these companies are not going to get their money it just means their budget is frozen for the next four years meaning it can't increase, it's frozen they don't get a raise.  But as you can see they already got a huge raise this past year and even though their budgets will be frozen (no raises) they are still getting way more money than what is normal.

This is a half-truth, and if the majority of Americans are not gonna bust Obama on it, what makes you think the majority of gamers are gonna bust Cryptic on this half-truth.  Marketing is all about going after people who are uneducated about a certain product or issue and spinning their propaganda on whatever it is their marketing.  Only those who have experience or researched deeply into the issue will no what the spin is and see it for what it is a half-truth.

Most of you on here have experience with marketing hype by gaming studios and can see very quickly through all the bullshit.

    Lol.

Why be honest when you can be in game marketing.

I've got nothing against STO, hope folks enjoy it.  That said, this is a silly press release, and on par with Sony's transparent "we have four bazillion Free Realms accounts!!!!"

If you're proud of your game and it's financial performance, release the real numbers, don't hide behind half-truths and misleading statistics.

Blizzard releases their sub numbers, not forum accounts.  Why doesn't Cryptic?

    That's a rhetorical question btw.

Link current Blizzard sub numbers please.

    http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/press/pressreleases.html?081028

There you go.  Couldn't find a more current one, may or may not be available.  The point remains that they bragged about their subscribers, not their forum accounts.

Yea I created 52 forum accounts trying to get a beta invite as well as other folks did too.  So those numbers are way so not real.

Now if cryptic wants to give us some numbers how about how many paying subs they have, then ill shut my mounth.

I've seen people get into rabid debates over xfire numbers, and generally speaking both sides are partly right. It can be a useful gauge of a game having a downward or upward trend, but it's never going to give any hard and fast numbers.

But I would say in regards to STO xfire isn't ever going to be much help. This game's population is going to skew older (less likely to use xfire), and it's also going to attract a lot of people who've never played an MMO before and have never heard of xfire. They'll buy the game, play for a month, and be gone before xfire ever catches them!

Maybee cryptic will release these figures when they have them, but considdering the game has only been able to take subscriptions since tuesday, and britain for example isn't getting it's retail release till the 5th, we can't say they aren't disclosing figures yet, as even they don't know them. Give them a chance to find out themselves before they tell us!

That makes sense, they probably don't know the tally yet, or not enough time has elapsed to provide an accurate metric.

That said, it didn't stop them from throwing out bogus forum registration numbers like it was some sort of great accomplishment.  I think the fact that they did so just plays into the hands of genre fans who already regard them as a little bit shady.

Kind of a dumb PR move imho.

The article itself can't even make up it's mind whether those 1 million accounts are for STO only or combined Cryptic accounts. I would believe the latter. The fanboys need to take their blinders off if they believe Website accounts are the same as STO subs. I am one of those million website accounts that played the STO OB and was very displeased with it. I will not be giving Cryptic my money for this shallow rendition of the Star Trek IP. It's a shame Star Trek has been defamed in this manner

Didn't Cryptic also set the record for "Most People Simultaneously Bent Over and Violated" for people who beta'd and then played the game day of release? I mean seriously... the only thing that would have fit that situation is if when people logged in is after everyone saw the massive update that they play "Never Gonna Give You Up" while doing the update.

    10.2.4
    ps
is sto still forcing you to use your log-in ID as part of the public chat name to make it 50% easier for spamers to steal accounts?
and the game servers still seem to be DOWN (offline) more than they are up (online)?

Also don't forget that Cryptic's forum accounts for CO/STO are linked to the game account login, even if you never actually bought a copy of either game.
