is sto still forcing you to use your log-in ID as part of the public chat name to make it 50% easier for spamers to steal accounts?

and the game servers still seem to be DOWN (offline) more than they are up (online)?

Yes, they are still using that method; that's why when you play either Co or STO, your character name is followed by the @<;account name> handle.

(DDDDDDDDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH Captain Raving Rabbid orders his tactical officer to fire plungers at Orion ships...oh the devastation!)

I would be interested in knowing if you do sub; the game's space combat is decent enough, being very close to the Starfleet Command series, but it does tend to get old quickly. I'd like to see numbers for the amount of people playing after one week, three weeks, one month, and three months. The replayability of the game currently is very low, especially after you go through everything once.

I guess the deciding point will be how fast can Cryptic pump out new content for the game, to keep people interested? Right now they are talking about a big update in 45 days, however that might be a bit too late for them if large chunks of the playerbase get bored before the 30 day free trial ends.

Don't you find it very convenient that Cryptic announced a 45 day patch approx a month ago?   Back in early Jan when they announced the big 45 day patch, how did they know they would be finished by then?  What is in this miracle 45 day patch that hasn't been already been patched so far?  People..    This patch is nothing more then another one of Cryptic's marketing tools to get those that would leave after the first FREE month to actually PAY at least one more month to see this miracle patch..  Based on a 200k box sales (estimate) and 50% of those would leave after the first month, that would be 100K customers Crytic plans on getting 1 more month out of ..  At  $15 a month, that would be an extra 1.5 million in revenue..

In any case, I would put good money down on a las vegas bet that says that 45 day miracle patch is already sitting and waiting to be installed, but will be kept back and used as a ploy to keep people after the free month..

How many months are inclusive when you buy the game? I`m pretty interested, what will happen after that period, but anyway - 1 million is very impressive!

This is pretty funny. As if gold-spammers can't just get your account name from game forums in any other game. Also I haven't heard of anyone having their account hacked in STO, and nowhere near the rampant hacking that goes on with WoW.

Also, I hate to burst your bubble, but that server status webpage isn't accurate. There was even a dev post saying it's wrong.

Perhaps you should pay more attention to official information.

The hate hype here at MMORPG.com with STO has become quite pathetic.

STO by far is the best new MMO out. Very little bugs. Very solid core game for both ground and space. You don't even need to like Star Trek to enjoy the game.

I think the subs for this will keep growing. There is loads of players on every day. Tons of stuff to do, whether it's PvE or PvP. The game is immersive. When they offer 14 day trials, people will see the improvements from beta.

I would have to disagree with the immersive part.  Not once did I feel like I was part of this universe.  The ONLY thing you do is combat questing, whether it is space or land.  The game lacks the immersiveness needed for a Star Trek IP.

Many people thought the same thing about the growth of Cryptic's other game...CO.  Where is their population now?  Need we forget that the first BIG update for CO is going to be a paid "expansion".  This has drawn a huge backlash from the little remaining of that population.  Cryptic really knows how to sink their games....

Everything is half-truths though.  Take Obama's spending freeze, it's not what Americans really think it is, by the sound of it they probably think "o look he's being fiscally responsible".
But what they don't realize is that Obama in his first year raised spending by 20% on average in all those departments he is now going to freeze when in the past they would usually get a 2% increase per year.  So over the next 4 years (time frame for his freeze) department budgets would have increased to around 8%.
A freeze does not mean these companies are not going to get their money it just means their budget is frozen for the next four years meaning it can't increase, it's frozen they don't get a raise.  But as you can see they already got a huge raise this past year and even though their budgets will be frozen (no raises) they are still getting way more money than what is normal.
This is a half-truth, and if the majority of Americans are not gonna bust Obama on it, what makes you think the majority of gamers are gonna bust Cryptic on this half-truth.  Marketing is all about going after people who are uneducated about a certain product or issue and spinning their propaganda on whatever it is their marketing.  Only those who have experience or researched deeply into the issue will no what the spin is and see it for what it is a half-truth.
Most of you on here have experience with marketing hype by gaming studios and can see very quickly through all the bullshit.

Not sure what you're referring to, there isn't any 'hate' in this thread but rather a lot of people (rightly) pointing out that Cryptic is hyping misleading information about their game.

I agree with your last bit though: it's much easier to like the game if you don't know or care about the source material.

Go to just about any game on these boards, but especially those games just releasing/released, and you will find most of the posts are neagative.  STO just got more of a boost from Trekkies disappointed the game wasn't developed to their liking.  I can't think of one game that released and had more postive posters than negative posters on this site.  On the positive side they tend to drift away after a few weeks to the next scheduled game to be released.

Actually NOT..   Global Agenda went live as well and doesn't have nearly the problems that STO is facing..  Global Agenda is holding a 8.2 rating.. (until STO fans run over there and trash it due to jealousy)  and if you read the forums here and there, you will not see them cluttered with disappointment..  Probably why they have a 8.2 rating..

Accept it.. STO is starting off on a sh*tty foot, and it shows..   Instead of making excuses for the problems, demand the devs fix the problems that are cursing it..

Star Trek fans are the only fans die hard enough to keep paying for a product with this amount of suckage.

That can be a good and a bad thing.

Think you proved my point!  I went over to that board which by the way doesn't seem to have a lot of traffic, but saw plenty of negative posts there, if thats the best you can come up with to disprove my statement, thats a fail!

It's funny how every MMO from 3 years or less, create all the hype, announce incredible initial sales and subscriptions, but they  end up with less than 100k subscribers a couple months later.

Actually, there is an answer to the 45 day patch question: They tried to sell an incomplete faction to the Klingon players as PvP-centric, all the while claiming that that faction wasn't just a glorified version of LotRO's monsterplay. When that piece of marketing spin backfired on them, they started talking about the patch 45 days from launch that would add in a genesis system geared for the Klingons (i.e. combat-centric) to try and fill in all the missing PvE content.

The truth is everyone who has followed the game knew approximately when they were going to ship for over a year now, ever since the big shot from Atari let slip that they were looking at a March 2010 ship date at the latest.

After years of waiting, the massive multiplayer game allowing you to play in a persistent universe of Trek’s 25th century is online, and according to Cryptic they have already logged in over 1 million registered accounts at the official websites. STO is also the top selling PC game at Amazon.

Watch the wording, that is registered web accounts.  Did I mention I have three registered accounts at STO and still never bought the game.  Just sayin...

I will gaurantee that they do not have 1 million true paying subscriptions, no way, no how.

Simple marketing ploy to lure in gullable's.

Maybe you didn't read much of the thread, but I conceded that point a very long time ago , Just sayin...;)

Other than 9Dragons, PKO, LOTRO, 2Moons, Wizard 101, Atlantica Online, Florensia, Runes of Magic, Aion, Sudden Attack and Age of Conan. Probably more, though.

If you are referring to solely the NA market of EQ/WOW variants, then the list is just LOTRO, Age of Conan, Wizard 101 (very different in design from the rest, though) and Aion.

As I saw with other comments.  if Cryptic really has faith, let's see what the subscription rate is like for active accounts at the end of the first 30 days.  Then we can really see where it stands.  On a side note, if we see the game itself discounted within the next 60 days, that will be a good sign, it's not doing well.

    Momo sucks, I have proof.

What's funny is I doubt the doors will close on STO like a lot of haters hope.  If trekkies were the only players there would be millions worldwide.  And I see a lot of "well, I'm a trekkie and I hate the game."  There's many more who will play just to play in the Star Trek universe.  But that's not including the non-trekkies who enjoy it either.  The non-trekkies who enjoy it range in the hundreds of thousands.  I know people who are waiting on payday to get a time card.  I know they only said 1 million but it only takes 150,000 players to keep a game up.  Sorry to say this haters but STO isn't going away any time soon, no matter how much you hate and spew flame.

Hundreds of thousands of players huh? Are they on some kind of enforced rotation or something? The last few times I've been on during primetime the most populated sector only had about 400 players in it.  Sol and earth space dock only had about 300 in them. A far cry from the thousands they had at launch.  I agree sto isn't going to go away anytime soon Cryptic will be trying to milk it for cash for the next year or so long after it fades into mediocrity. Plus they have their third shovelware mmo to work on right now.

already has been reduced in price for a small period of time, they knocked $20 off it and gave away 60 day free play time as well, and then the STO community screamed like hell and Cryptic i believe said it was just an experiment  lol  that offer is no longer available though
