My problem is that I'm already rocking a 200 ping or more.. vent I'm sure is going to increase that even more with alot of people talking. So, I try to avoid vent when I can. But, its gotten to be where its basically required to even play alot of these games now. I joined the clan based on another post I made here, one of their members PMed me.. and they seemed like they were the way to go.. and they still very well may be. I haven't seen the person who actually invited me online yet, but when I was on earlier in the day.. I only think one person from the clan was on.. the other members of the alliance were on and were doing some sort of PVP and those were the ones I was asking where the tailoring station was, and just got ignored. I'm banking on it being because they weren't paying attention to chat.. even though they were actively talking amongst themselves about other stuff. I'm looking for a clan that basically takes new players under their wings and shows them the ropes.
I can definitely relate to that, as I personally cannot stand having to deal with high ping in online games.
Whether or not vent would deteriorate your ping even further is something I cant really comment on though. It personally doesn't effect me one bit, but my ISP is different from yours (a safe assumption anyway) and as such I might have a higher (or lesser) quality of service.
I average 60-90 ping consistently on NA-1, with the max I've ever seen being around 120-130, and that was on a day when the server was acting strangely.
One thing to keep in mind about vent though, is that most call-outs and warnings take place there. I cant count the amount of times it saved my characters life, not to mention that it is an avenue to easy pvp, because your clanmates will almost always give an immediate update (including brief directions) to the attackers location.
Clan Alliance is usually just small talk, random clan chatter, etc... It is a good idea to keep an eye on it, but vent is definitely the more active way of communicating any type of sensitive or important information, and as far as I know every clan in the DFWA Alliance requires there members to be in vent when they are logged into the game (there may very well be some exceptions, but if there is I am not aware of them).
Imperil is solid, especially seeing as they are part of DFWA. As you can see on the Political Map we (we meaning the DFWA Alliance as a whole) own Ruby completely, as well as various other settlements throughout Agon. I am a member of another clan within DFWA and I couldn't be happier. It has been a great experience right from day one.
DFWA gets alot of flack at times, but is easily one of the top alliances on the server and being involved is an opportunity I would not recommend stepping away from. Players have been saying we would break up for a very long time now, and we have proven them wrong time and time again. The Alliance is stronger than ever before, even with most of WMD having left the game.
If you are not near Ruby currently, you should consider moving your character down to the island. Then base yourself out of one of the alliances cities, UH or US in particular. It will make your life alot easier, and hopefully should make your DF experience a little more fun.
Boom there's your problem man. I personally hate using Vent in any game, however in a game like Darkfall it's absolutely necessary. This is why you're having social issues, no question about it.
Agreed, vent is an absolute must in DF.
Most clans that are worth joining require you to be in vent if you are ingame, it is not optional.
The fact that the OP has not encountered this (as well as the fact that I asked if he wouldn't mind naming some of the clans he had been a part of very early in the thread, and have yet to receive an answer when he has posted multiple times in response to others since my initial request), leads me to believe that the clans he was involved in were sub-par and not a good indicator of how most of DFs clans act towards there members.
I've never seen a game where I felt like a part of something as much as I do/have in DF. My clansmen are like family to me and I to them, we are very close and we make a serious effort to make new members feel right at home. It seems very foreign to me for someone to have so many issues, I can't even wrap my head around it.
Still waiting on those clan names...
How is it really a must? I dont see it. I dont. Im hearing impaired and I've played a variety of games that has vent-optional guilds. It just only takes one person to explain a few things then move on. It's simply common sense and form strategies for something serious. I despise lazy ass motherfuckers who absolutely requires vent to just fucking shout at them and call them fucking names for just making one mistake or 2. woot. That is FREQUENT in most games that I'm smart to avoid. It's not hard to type a couple of words of this and that. /shrug. Hearing impaired people are capable of anything, period except hearing, but knowing how DF is.. you'd hear more of the bitching than the sweet, welcoming voices. As for those who AREN'T hearing impaired, but speak in a variety of languages (foreigners) do cause problems on vent with "HUH?" , "HABLA ESPANOOOOL?" , among other things in gibberish. I can imagine that's a common occurance in DF clans that REQUIRES vent. Drama happens, chaos happens, clans disband, fight out in the open, calling eachother noobs in public chat or w/e. That's what I visualize - It's a good thing I can't hear for those specific reasons Easier to focus in games on my end. SO.. Don't force the vent idea down peoples' throats if they're not comfortable with it or tell them that's the problem why some people couldn't get an answer for a simple question. They need to get off their high horses and help if they want no bad conscience and the clan to be kept intact. There's compromises if people are compassionate enough, but that's rare. /ends $.02
Oh,
I just started tonight. I got a fabulous grand entrance of a red player ganking me along with 4 goblins on my ass. I was confuzzled and laid there in blood. I smiled and ponder to myself, wow. That's how the game rolls? Shall I roll with it with some more? I wish I had a better weapon that would gain more confidence.. Well, I came back to the goblins again and got my quest completed.. then died somehow by a goblin's arrows. I spaced and released. My loot was gone. That sucks even worse without pk'ers looting me >< I'm not so sure if I want to continue, but it'd be nice to have another player with me but it was so abandoned in Leafhelm lol
I wanted to like this game.. but I just can't do it. I've wasted 5 months worth of sub fees so far, on top of the 50 I paid for the game. Its not UO, and it will never be.
I've tried 8 different clans, and the same thing always happens. I get ignored. "welcome to the clan" and thats pretty much the last I hear. If I try to ask questions, noone responds. If I try to ask questions in the global chat.. they are usually spamming and trash talking each other so noone that might be able to answer actually sees my question. I spent 30 minutes looking for the tailoring station, and after asking twice and getting no response I logged out. Everytime I log on, the graphics perform differently.. for some reason.. which is annoying. I hate to say it, but maybe I need to be playing a themepark game. I just don't have the patience for this stuff. I want to have fun, and make friends.. but seems everyone has already formed their "cliqs" and they aren't accepting new members.
Nobody uses in-game chat because its a trash chat system. If you didn't log on to your guilds vent server then you only have yourself to blame.
If people are ignoring you in vent its generally because your really annoying and everyone hates you.

This isn't WoW. You don't explain the scripted encounter once and then go back to staring crosseyed at your TV while standing in fire and pissing the healers off that are yelling at you on vent to get out of the fire. You need to give commands and pass information in realtime based on the situation, and the chat interface is definitely not up to the task in this game(or any game really, but definitely not DF). PvPing w/out vent is putting yourself at a serious disadvantage against an opponent that is using vent.
And nobody wants to be bothered to type out everything to the lazy assholes that can't log into a vent server, which is the case 99% of the time. Especially in the heat of battle.
Now I understand your hearing impaired, and thats unfortunate, but you can't expect other people to go out of their way just because of your disability. It sucks, but this is the internet, and thems the ropes.
People aren't forcing vent "down their throats." it's just a reality of this game. No doubt you can find clans that don't require vent, but they probably suck.
If after dying twice your already having second thoughts about whether you can handle the game, I suggest you just move on, or seriously re-evaluate your base attitude about what to expect from the game.

I never said I'm giving up
I also never implied that people should go out of their way due to my disability. Not everyone knows it I don't announce it unless they throw "vent required" in my face, then they'll know. I'm stating that hearing impaired people are capable of anything, including PVP in any game. Darkfall is no different from others but very-vent-reliable with eccentric combat mechanics.
In our eyes, the people on vent are the lazier ones due to the fact they just sit there & mock which is 99% of the time than typing in chat shows more interest and effort to those people who asks questions or just to talk

I'm visualy impared, could you please type that in a larger font? I really hate it when lazy ass people can't be bothered to type a post in a character font size that is readable and make me squint just so I have their profanity forced down my throat. Also those foreign idiots that don't type english, I bet that's a common occurance in clans that only type.
Luckily my clan/alliance use vent and most foreigners can speak a little English more so than type it. Also without vent most battles would be lost to those that do use it, you need to be organized to win in DFO. It's like playing battlefield, the guys that use vent always WTFPWN the guys that don't. Typing is annoying and I don't have 15 minutes to waste on explaining to some guy how to use the interface whilst I'm being chased down by PKs!

Vent has its uses.. thats for sure. The issue is that there is a fine line as far as I'm concerned about what is useful and what isn't.
Do I think you need to be logged into vent at all times? No, I don;t.
Do I think you need to be in vent during pvp battles, yeah it probably does help.
The problem is, there is a large percentage of people who get on vent to be annoying. They talk about work issues, wife issues, friend issues, money issues, anything that is not game related issues. I don't want to hear that garbage. I have to listen to people moan and groan all day every day at work. The last thing I want to hear when I get to relax is more people moaning and groaning about everything other than the game we are playing. I don't want to hear sex jokes, or sex remarks. I don't want to hear racial remarks. I don't want to hear people talking about football, or baseball, or basketball or any of the other plethora of things that break immersion. I don't want to hear a 12 year old voice barking orders at me or anyone else. I don't want to hear extreme amounts of profanity (I'll watch a rob zombie film if I want to hear that). I don't want to hear heavy breathing because one idiot refuses to bind his key. I don't want to hear random music that one guy decides to stream over vent the entire time he plays. I don't want to hear screaming babies, or farting over the mic. I don't want to hear anything these people are doing other than playing the game. And.. thats the issue you have with vent.. because its impossible to control any of that.
What I do want to hear in vent is nice strategic chat. And, the occasional social chat.. as long as its not the same people babbling about the same nonsense hogging the entire channel. The problem is, there are very few that work this way. I know, which is why I try to avoid them like the plague. But, if I know its a group of mature people who understand the reason to have vent.. its a much more enjoyable experience.

Can you read this now? YOU CAN SIMPLY TELL THEM TO HOLD ON or (BRB) WHILE YOU'RE BEING CHASED DOWN BY PKs Simple.
Oh i see you don't want to establish social relationships with the clan people. Thats the bit of the solo mentality the mainstream MMO industry has established because back in the good oldskool days it was all about socializing.
You have to agree that half of the problem lies within you with you unwillingness in these point ofcourse the other half belongs to the immaturity the MMORPG playerbase that went downhill with MMORPG's becoming mainstream. But DFO HAS mature people and probably it isn't much of a harm to talk a bit about the real lifes too, and good think is you could also throw your RL baggage in if you finally find good online companions
That said i had the luck to step in Darkfall with a Clan i know for years so probably i had just luck to talk about that matter in such a way i did, wish you luck however.

Pretty sure ventrilo is mandatory for most clans in the game, and rightly so. This is a competitive PvP game where action is fast and situational awareness is key. There simply is no time to type anything in the middle of combat, especially in a game with real time combat like Darkfall. Outside of combat, vent is still important because it creates an environment for you to get to bond with your friends and clan mates. People who know each other well fight together well. Frankly I'm shocked that any clan at this point would not have some sort of voice chat server going, even more so in this game. As a guild leader, having ventrilo and a working mic is mandatory to join, and if a new recruit did not use these critical tools, he would not be taken seriously and most likely removed from the roster.
Interesting you should bring this up. While I completely understand the need for voice coms during PVP OPS, when I'm not PVPing (and perhaps there is no such time in DF) I don't really care to be on it because basically, I don't care what most people have to say unless its game related.
I'm currently searching for a new EVE Corp, and when reading their recruiting threads if I see the words "must be on vent at all times when in game" I move on to another one where they only ask you be in voice chat for combat OPs.
I guess a game like DF might require it more often since the environment tends to be hostile at all times.

I have a couple Logitech USB headsets that I got at Bestbuy for between $15 and $20 USD a couple years ago. They ROCK.

Would have saved me a set of gear yesterday had I been in vent. I had no idea that 5 reds were headed to our city....until I hopped over the wall right into the middle of them.
Besides having it's uses as an early warning system, and battle comm system, vent allows you to actually become FRIENDS with the people you play with. I have friends from all over the world thanks to vent....it's priceless.
Get in there and don't be so shy! Have a good time! Joke, laugh, and get to know your clan...you may make friends that you'll have forever.

Unlike EVE there is really never a safe moment in Darkfall, even in PVE you need the ability to hear the people you're with if any so that if by chance someone sees something you'll know. Even if solo PVEing listening to people's updates on what's happening at the clan city or whatever can give you tips to how close potential PVP is. I couldn't imagine playing this game without VOIP, just like I couldn't play a FPS without it. Taking it out of the picture is like losing an arm and a leg. It gimps you in a way you don't realize until you learn to make the most of it.
You actually blaming a game because you cant make friends. I really wish you still played so I could kill you and take your stuff. You would probably start some sorta tell war about how I griefed you and lack skill
well I guess I will be getting a mic today or tomorrow at Best Buy and poster above ^^^ your an idiot, we can make friends over the internet. We can most likely make friends ANYWHERE. So stop acting like an internet tough guy and putting down people for having a good time and meeting good people.
So if the OP had spent 5 days playing DF, and realizes he didn't like it, then all the fanboys would say NO NOOB you have to play longer to get a feel for the game before you make an opinion, go back to WoW.
So instead he spends 5 months playing the game, realizes he doesn't like it, and now he's called a troll, an idiot, or a liar....
Sounds a bit unfair to me. The OP seems very credible and honest. He gave DF a chance. Kept logging in month after month because he wanted to give it a chance, see what's changed, see if the community had gotten any more mature, see if a patch might have changed some things.
I'd say it's time for the OP to move on. DF isn't the cup of tea you ordered.
How is it really a must? I dont see it. I dont. Im hearing impaired and I've played a variety of games that has vent-optional guilds. You have played for less than a day, of course you don't "see it". Your game experience atm is limited to nothing more than hanging around a starter city, grinding and gathering. Thats just fine that you have played other games that have vent-optional guilds, however, DF isn't one of those games. If you plan to be involved with any sort of worthwhile clan, then using vent is a reality you will have to face, or you can pony up and explain your disability to the other clan members in the hope that they make an exception for you. I really don't understand why you are debating me on a subject involving a game you just started playing, when I have been involved since launch. If you think you have a firmer grasp on the intricacies of the game than I do, you are wrong. It just only takes one person to explain a few things then move on. My alliance has nearly 800 players in it. When we prepare for scheduled engagements we have to organize everyone who is online and wants to be involved, from a pool of players who are from 9 different clans. One person alone cannot accomplish this in large alliances, regardless of what you may think. You are wrong. You are looking at the situation from a very narrow-minded viewpoint. /shrug. It has nothing to do with being lazy, but imo it would appear that the player who is unwilling to use vent is the lazy one, not the other way around. No, it isn't a common occurence at all, you are mistaken. Drama happens, chaos happens, clans disband, fight out in the open, calling eachother noobs in public chat or w/e. Sounds like you have a history of being involved with guilds/clans that have poor leadership. That's what I visualize - It's a good thing I can't hear for those specific reasons Easier to focus in games on my end. SO.. Don't force the vent idea down peoples' throats if they're not comfortable with it Nobody has forced anything down anyones throat. However, the reality is that certain clans WILL require it, whether you agree with it or not. or tell them that's the problem why some people couldn't get an answer for a simple question. They need to get off their high horses and help if they want no bad conscience and the clan to be kept intact. There's compromises if people are compassionate enough, but that's rare. /ends $.02 Well, then don't bitch about not getting an answer when the time comes, all because you thought that chat was "good enough" and that the people who want to keep communcation clear and concise were on some kind of moral high horse. Bad conscience? Your disability is just that, yours. If you think others should just cater to you because of it then you are in for a reality check, miss. The world doesn't work that way. One member, who isn't even willing to use vent, is not going to be a factor in a clan breaking up either. You really need to get more experience with the game and take some time to inform yourself before you make a ton of incorrect assumptions (like you have done here). Oh, I just started tonight. That sucks even worse without pk'ers looting me >< I'm not so sure if I want to continue, but it'd be nice to have another player with me but it was so abandoned in Leafhelm lol Of course your loot was gone, it was sitting on your tombstone where you died, all you had to do was run back and loot your own stone before someone else did. The red was gone by that time, you died to mobs, and I guarantee your loot was still on your stone. What caused your problem? Again, your lack of knowledge regarding the game. You could have gotten your stuff back, but you have no idea how the game plays and don't seem to want to make any effort to learn, so you really have nobody to thank for your misfortune other than yourself.
well I guess I will be getting a mic today or tomorrow at Best Buy and poster above ^^^ your an idiot, we can make friends over the internet. We can most likely make friends ANYWHERE. So stop acting like an internet tough guy and putting down people for having a good time and meeting good people.
What? Im no tough guy. The OP was nothing more than a whine about not having people to talk to. Where did I say anything about making friends in RL. I really wish he still played so I could kill him and take his stuff.
To me thats the beauty of DFO. If you rub me the wrong way I can always steal your mount.

Hey, that's totally fine. I like my peace and quiet to a lot of the time. That's why we have a bunch of channels set up so that people can idle in channels by themselves if they want. Most of the time the rest of the guild respects that. As the other poster said, it is also for your protection as well. It's a must when we take our guys out looking for PvP, but sometimes PvP comes looking for you. So for people's own protection its nice to be able to give them a warning that often time can get lost in the game's less-than-stellar chat UI.
As a guild leader, I actually find myself usually in 2 vents at the same time. One for INQ and one for our alliance. Usually in the alliance vent I sit in my own channel set aside just for INQ. The benefit is that often times the alliance leaders will issue global vent broadcasts in the alliance vent that warn of enemies being spotted near one of our cities, or head's up on possible upcoming raids the alliance might be forming. I am then able to relay these messages to my guys in our vent so they can take appropriate measures to be safe or to gather up for raids.

Indeed it is!
In fact, I'm planning on taking my new alt to the starter area where wh0astar is currently based out of, and upon finding her character I plan to make her ingame time rather challenging. She will be my content, damn I love sandboxes!
I suspect quite a few others have the same idea, DF is very similar to EvE in that regard - if you shoot your mouth off in public, you better prepare for the consequences.
I've camped specific areas for hours upon hours before, and I have no fear of going red because I can farm the alignment back by logging my main account in and killing my main character with my new alt.
Count your lucky stars that I have a funeral to go to today, because the minute I can get ingame I'm going to murder every character with a female name that I can find around that area. Hell, I might even hire a few blues to heal me and head right into town for some kills, nothing better than hitting someone at the bank! Especially if it is someone who shot there yap off on an internet forum, that is simply icing on the proverbial cake.
Comments

Nobody uses in-game chat because its a trash chat system. If you didn't log on to your guilds vent server then you only have yourself to blame.
If people are ignoring you in vent its generally because your really annoying and everyone hates you.

Or you can go back to school and learn to read appropriately.
Nobody wants to be bothered to type out everything to the lazy assholes that can't log into a vent server, which is the case 99% of the time.

Can you read this now? YOU CAN SIMPLY TELL THEM TO HOLD ON or (BRB) WHILE YOU'RE BEING CHASED DOWN BY PKs Simple.

Oh DF, how I thee.
