Nah. They got their subscribers through hard work - expansions.
There is no other game that evolved as massively as EVE. Not to mention the game yields concept of longevity, working on being different is not what you can call lucky.

You arent seeing a major thing.. They had TIME to do that.. Without it it doesnt turn out so well.
Lets pretend for a moment that when EVE first release there were 2 or 3 major players in that genre and many F2P options. Now imagine that one of them is releasing a sequel to a successful game. Another one is sitting on a somewhat successful game and the third just butchered itself. Now add in a few more games in this same genre that are in the pipeline ready for release very soon.
Adding all that up.. Do you think EVE would have done much of anything but a small " bloop " as it hit the water? ( it isnt much more than that right now ) No competition in the genre allowed the devs to bring EVE along slowly.
-took over 10 hours to get it working on 2 computers
-have had to do a full reinstall once
-game is laggier then any game I've ever seen
-no grouping options to speak of
-crafting is a nightmare to figure out
-no vendors that sell anything other then skill books / crafting gear (what do you mean you don't play mmo's as a second job)
-not all towns have all skill books
-no map, orientation tools of any kind (seriously.. no compass even? how the ---- and I supposed to find my way back to town?)
-weapon fighting is like playing quake with no guns
-can't select what skills you start with, every new toon starts with a different assortment of skills even when the same 'background' is picked
-people are idiots and can't find any real help, certainly asking for it doesn't work at any rate
I loved early UO, played it for 5 years and hoped another MMO would come down the line that improved on it's formula. MO promised but didn't deliver as far as I am concerned. Still love the skill based sandbox concept and will keep hoping.
I rated it a 1. I had the game downloaded and ready to play the first day. When I got in it was so laggy that all the npc's were missing and there was no axe in my inventory. Kept relogging, same problem (and for everyone else at that time). Tried again the next day. Got in, I have to say the graphics were very nice while I was chopping a tree. Got bored doing that, started walking towards an npc and the server went down.
Tried again the next day. There was a patch. Got an error saying Scan error unable to connect to patch server. Tried doing all the fixes they had listed on the forums to no avail.
Uninstalled the game yesterday.
The game in itself looked like a very interesting concept. I am not a fan of First person view but this was not a beta. I played alphas that ran better then this game.
For christs sake, stop comparing it with EvE.. EvE was unique scifi game by the time it came out, MO is not unique, and got plenty of pain in ass features to put players off.
Wow...for some reason I'm actually glad I bought it.
In CB, I had no issues with lag whatsoever and patching took a max of 5 hours depending.
The server is obviously in overload.
As far as bugs, let me tell you, there have been tons. Are the crafting tables working? Are stamina-using activities taking from your stamina bar and not your health bar? No? Didn't think so. Shut up.
You guys are expecting too much. You're expecting what's probably 10x the population of people that bought the game to be allowed on the server whenever they want without consequence. Well tough, it's not SV's fault that they couldn't anticipate it. If they're gauging it based on their CB playerbase when CB access was part of pre-ordering, then they're obviously going to have issues.
Now, on to the reason I'm glad I bought it: I get another free month after OB to play in which all you idiots aren't bogging down the server to choose whether I want to sub or not.
Yeah, yeah, now who's smart?!
EDIT: Apologies for the abrasive attitude. I'm exhausted, in school and sick of dealing with idiots.
I stayed out of commenting on this poll because I didn't want my "1" to skew the results.
Obviously, it really wouldn't have mattered since that's the most voted for item, apparently.
It says a lot about the quality of the game when the vast majority of people are giving it an atrocious review. As time passes on, the lag will clear up and not because of SV fixing it, but because every player that wanted to check it out has, and came to the same conclusion this poll is coming to. The unfortunate thing is that on the MO Forums, they seem to think that MMORPG is biased so "don't listen to this poll", but then themselves come over here to try to skew the results. If you dislike the game apparently, you're just wrong.

Of course CB wouldnt have as much lag as there would be a very small amount of people on at a given time. Its not a glowing endorsement.
No one is expecting to much considering this is an open beta.. In an open beta I expect the core of the game to be in working order and many of its features to be solid. Its the period where the final touches begin to be put on the product. This game feels like it was whipped up in someones basement 3 weeks ago.
First off, I had installation problems. I went to their forums for help and found that a lot of people were having similar issues. I couldn't really understand how a game company could release what is essentially a demo without having a decent installer. The launcher had problems too, which they still haven't fixed.
So I finally got the game up and running. I was met with a kind of gritty, older looking interface that instantly gave me a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. I got to the character customization screen and literally laughed out loud: the models were so horrible looking (and naked) that it made me cringe.
After figuring out the games 'lineage' system, I got into the game world, where I instantly felt like I was drunk. WTF is with the fishbowl effects? I can understand wanting to make the game more realistic, but I don't get that in real life... I hit escape to check out the interface options. Holy crap, it looks like a 15 year old RPG menu.
Anyway, I started walking around, looking for some directional assistance. There was nothing, I wandered around, wanting to do something but found absolutely no compelling reason to do anything. I tried fighting a bit. I thought, "Wow, wth is with this 'combat mode'?". I was instantly slowed to a crawl and felt like a fucking turtle. I noted the timer that popped up as I went in and out of 'combat'.
I went over to the dock area and was hopping around. I noticed my stamina bar going down when I jumped. I got up along a very (very) small wooden curb, something that a 3 year old on valium could climb up, and was promptly blocked. I had to jump up on it, but couldn't because I had no stamina left...
I tried messing around, jumped into the water and drowned. I tried to respawn, but couldn't. I eventually figured out how to return to the nearest priest. I waited the required 60 seconds and... nothing. I tried to log out, but it kept CANCELING my logout (presumably because I was under water). I hit alt-f4 and promptly uninstalled the game.
I basically wasted 3 hours of my life, thanks Star Vault, thanks.

You DO know that they could always cap the server population don't you? Who's fault is it that they didn't cap the server with, as you say "10x the population"? I could understand the first day.. but right away they should have realized it wasn't working and instituted a cap with an announcement explaining they were working on it and the server would have X people while they fixed it. but you know.. that would require communicating... officially.. and not just an IRC chat.

Guess you could consider the "Patcher" a means of throttling population. How many people were unable to update their clients? (sure there are work arounds and fixes if you dig deep enough) Another week of this and OB will be back to CB numbers and all will be "well". (other than having enough people to financially support the game)
Would one of the people (assuming all 20 votes aren't the same person) please explain your thoughts on arriving at a 10 on the MO OB? Im serious, would love to hear it.

Been following this one since Block A. I have logged in from time to time since then, but the game is still far far away from actually being something worth investing some free time into. Development staff is very inexperienced and undermanned - but they work hard and constantly post updates via mIRC. So that's kinda cool.
This product is still a long long way from release.
I am saying this to warn you before purchasing/pre-ordering. So you know what your getting into.
I voted a 7/10. This may seem a little high to some people, but my standards are significantly lower since I did the Vanguard beta. At least when I get into this game I can manage to play with out CTD every 10 mins, and CPU shutdown every hour due to massive memory leaks (that were still present launch day for VG BTW) Yeah its rough, and there are still patcher issues that can make it take litteraly days to get into the game. But on the other side of that, this dev team is the best I have ever seen for keeping the community informed of the status of the game, and they have been very straight forward with what they expect the game to be like at release. Still missing a few of the promised things, but hey, it is still beta after all. *raises flame shield*
I'd have to disagree with the VG comparison, simply because VG had 100x more content than MO has. Yeah a lot of it was buggy, but at least it was there. Two different types of games though, so hard to make a valid comparison.
I voted 4/10, simply because MO has set a new standard for user-unfriendly UIs, half-baked content (which can only be called content if you're in a generous mood), and a general lack of professionalism evident in every facet of the operation.
It really is a bunch of kids slapping together some code, and it shows.
Gave it a 2 just because of the graphics. As far as the gameplay goes....ughhh.
Its definitely not "Open Beta" its Alpha. The open part is the only thing thats spot on about it. Huge empty world. Great. I feel like im playing an elder scrolls map editor. Tab targeting everything is really annoying, it is after all an MMO and mouse functionality would be nice, or a scroll over targeting system at the very least. BTW a rabbit almost kicked my ass.
Would one of the people (assuming all 20 votes aren't the same person) please explain your thoughts on arriving at a 10 on the MO OB? Im serious, would love to hear it.

I could care less what was promised, as it is not enough and all done very poorly. The launcher is very annoying, i was told that after installing the new one the game will update itself instead of DL'ing the entire game every time but have been unable to update it since the last little patch.
I realized i wasted my money after 20 mins of my first time playing and now im just addicted to watching this game go down in flames. It is odd as i have never had a sadistic attitude like this before, but i really don't want companies thinking it is acceptable to release garbage like this to the public and expect charity.
