As Mr Z would say from Star Trek Online.. Some of you just "don't get it".. This post was not about someone being biased or not.. All reviews are subject to a biased point of view.. If you like the Star Trek theme, you are already biased favorably towards the game, even without you knowing it.. STO has dozens of reviews on it.. some even positive giving it B+ scores and 90% scores.. Did I mention or complain anything about their scores.. NO..
This whole thread is not about a personal bias.. but PROFESSION appearance.. Please go back and reread BurnVet's post, as he was able to define and explain the problem I have with TTH review then I could..
It also was the first review where i, scoring aside, actually felt like the guy played the game. Most reviews just show a screeny of the tier 1 miranda class, talk abit about this and that, catchy phrases that are pretty general, talk about endgame(that they for sure havnt seen in their miranda), and then they go over to the scoring. Some even just take the official screenys from the gamesite when talking about the borg content that got added after release wonder why they didnt make their own screenshots ...
Rating aside, they guy was spot on and displayed a intimate knowledge of the game. That guy obviously actually spend time in the game, not like most other reviews which feel like the reviewer spend like 5 hours in the game, then extrapolated the rest from forums.
P.S.: Thats btw a general complaint of me, not just STO. Most MMOs besides wow just dont get the attention they deserve in reviews i think. I dont think a reviewer has to have played the game completely through and experienced most nicks and crannys to rate it, but he better expect his review to be looking bad compared to one from someone who did.
So in other words. The owner of this very website you are posting on right now didn't play the game either and gave it a false low score in his review as well?
Right man. Whatever fares your boat.
Which part of "ratings aside", "scoring aside" or "I dont think a reviewer has to have played the game completely through and experienced most nicks and crannys to rate it" do you have trouble understanding? Really english is my second language too, if i know which of the big words are hard for you i can try to explain it with easier, smaller words.
And if you use phrases like "in other words", all your saying is that the words i did use didnt say what you wanted to read out of them.

The guy is just managing a subpage with a couple newsstories and stuff on a independent third party site. Id wager a guess he has a few more resposibilities. In other words he is doing his job, and likely doesnt care one way or the other wether he is managing the STO site, AION, site or WoW site on their page. If you think wether or not his job is secure relates in any way or shape or form on STOs success ... You honestly believe STO is somehow generating TTH enough revenue to pay this mans job the last 5 years do you?
Everyone can be biased. But some people actually take the way they make a living and feed their kids a little more seriously than some forum fanbois who see conspirations everywhere.

Rest my case.
You where constructing a connection between me not liking other reviews(and i only read 2-3), and the low score in these other reviews. While i was only talking about the content. And yes i dont like the review on this site, to much talking around, and not enough facts about the actual gameplay. Jon Wood gives entire paragraphs to his impression of the voiceover of the tutorial or what he thinks the devs should do from now, but neglects to tell us anything about the different shipclasses, BOs, or that there even are different shipclasses. No mention of upcoming content, or even the content already patched in either.
Not a single word about what ship you start in, not a single word about the different weapon systems. He tells us space combat is fun, but not why he finds it fun. He says its easy in the beginning, but not why its easy. The advancement system he loves, yet no word how it works(your skills affect the strength of your BOs skills) or that you cant respec your choices. Actually reading his explanation of space combat, and what i know from playing the game the two just dont compare. The ground combat part he explained a bit better, but he talks about BOs like anyone knows about them, yet he never mentioned them before.
The rest of the review i liked better, but the space part? Its not to much to mention that you can fly different ships and what it means for gameplay is it? So yeah, im not happy with the review the game got on this site. It lacked depth imho, and thats just that, my personal opinion. Fully respect the work Jon Wood did with his review, but it just didnt feel like he played the game(which he obviously has) and then told us about it, but more like he dissected it and then showed us some of the gory details without ever showing us the big picture before.
That sounds like harsh criticism, but i want to stress that i simply dont like the angle he took. Not saying its wrong, but i would personally like to learn something about how a game is like from a review, not just how he liked certain parts of it.
You are a diehard, almost religeous Start Trek Online fan, as you pretty much only post in this forum and everything STO related. Have been bashing every critic and been defending this game like your life depends on it. Don't deny it. If John Wood had given the game a score of 8+ you would have been all over his review drooling and complimenting him.
So what? I mean why is this a bad thing? You have people on this forum that do not like the game, thats cool, no game is for everyone. But rather than just let it go as I do not like they try to bash anyone that says they do like it. Just flip the coin man.
This goes back to a thread I did a while back asking why MMO gamers are jerks. There are a lot of games out there loved by some people that I cannot stand. However that does not mean I need to bash them when they sing the praises of the game. By the same token there are a lot of pople that bash games I do like, no need to attack them because we all like something different.
However this community does not seem to get that. If people here do not like a game it is not enough to say that. Instead they feel this need to bash the point to death and then attack anyone that enjoys the game they they hate. Of course this is not helped by the opposite action taking place as well.
Why is it so hard to say you do not like the game, you do not intend to play and they go post in forums about games you do play? Why the need to be a jerk to people in forums of games you claim to hate yet cannot stop talking about?
BTW the you above is not directed at anyone but a general reference.

Ummmm Mopar.. aren't you being hypocritical right now.. You try to come off as I'm impartial and immune to such "jerk" behavior.. HOWEVER.. Every time you confront someone, you aim it towards a certain "group" of people ONLY.. I fail to see any post from you ever confronting the conduct Rocketeer, but you are quick to attack and confront Guill.......
This isn't the first post like this .. many of yours are like this.. Mopar, you are a pro fan of the game and that is OK.. to each their own, however, 99% of you confrontational post are always directed at those that complain about the game.. Hypocrisy comes to mind..

I am curious how much time do you think I spend in forums for games I do not like attacking them? None actually so hypocritical how? I also do not attack as you say anyone that offers a legitimate gripe I tend to go after the people bashing others for liking a game or passing incorrect information.
I do not recall every making a post where I called someone names, or actually trashed talked them for liking a game. If you can find such a post please let me know.
Just because his opinion doesnt reflect yours or others doen't make it a suspicious review. His taste in games or what constitutes a good game is different. His opinion is just his....an opinion no better or no worse than yours.

All my opinions are just that..opinions. If you like my opinions..coolness.If you dont like my opinion....I really dont care. Playing: ESO, WOT, Smite, and Marvel Heroes
You just did.. When you made reference to a different post about gamers being Jerks , what you did was imply that Guill was one of them jerks, without you actually crossing the line and getting reported for it.. There was no other reason for that reference other then to take a stab.. I have seen many arguments on these boards this past week and many insults coming from the loyal STO fan base and appearently you conveniently always seem to miss those post.. Selective viewing? Lets turn your request around.. show me a post of yours where you actually confronted the conduct of a STO fan
edit.. lets see if you address rabit's response that had nothing to do with they topic..

WoW.. did you ever read past the original post before responding? lmaooo I'm guessing you didn't
I dare anyone to compare the TTH review where he explains space combat with the one on this site and tell me they are equally detailed. The TTH one goes over 9 paragraphs, explaining it in detail and describing it.
MMORPG.com
Space combat in STO allows the player to engage themselves not only with the typical, use power, hit enemy, do damage, repeat, that is found in so many MMOs, but also with maintaining their defences, and controlling power to their critical systems. When the combat is challenging, I found myself constantly engaged in an exciting way.
TTH
As you progress through the game, you'll gain access to bigger and better ships. These ships will have more console stations for your bridge officers. The number and types (science, engineering, and tactical) depend on the type of ship you choose. Cruisers are the lumbering tanks of the game with their massive hull strength numbers. Escorts are glass cannons that can turn on a dime. Finally, Science vessels have the most advanced shields of any ship and their crew can disable the subsystems (shields, weapons, engines, and auxiliary systems) of enemy vessels. Each ship has its own strength and weaknesses. Take the time to learn each of them, and you'll be a space combat master in no time.
Thats just an example, there is just way more information in the TTH one, and even if they had rated it c-, it would still be a more indepth review. And if a review is longer, more detailed, and offers what i consider a deeper understanding of the game, yes i will probably be more inclined to believe its conclusions, cause i actually see that the reviewer invested more time in it.
I pretty much agreed with it all except the game play. The graphics are very pretty and to even say amazing in some senses when you play you can actually feel like you are in a movie (I can only imagine what this game does for fan cinemas). The sounds are great, and only 1 time did I think a sounds did not match what I expected to hear. Great music and ambiance. I have said before in the "rate this game" thread that the space combat is a solid B or even an A in some cases with its complexity and learning curve, but the ground system is an unimagined D. I don't know if I would go as far as I would with fanworship as the 10tonhammer guy does, but in the end when people play STO they are truly playing it for the IP to begin with.
Just because his opinion doesnt reflect yours or others doen't make it a suspicious review. His taste in games or what constitutes a good game is different. What does your conjecture have to do with someone else and their opinion? Nothing you wrote (added) has any bearing on my opinion of this review. You have no facts to back up any claim you're making. It's all hyperbole to me, even the review itself is insignificant. I don't care what any review says when I've already tried a game. I also don't automatically assume there is a conspiracy when a reviewer has a different opinion than I.
What is this one positive review on STO? Every other I've seen was either satisfactory or mediocre, this was the exception, there's always going to be an exception. Especially where opinions are concerned.

WoW.. interesting.. After reading this review www.tentonhammer.com/sto/features/reviews/fullreview I was like.. WTF, is this the same game that all the other major reviewers played? The scores I thought were very questionable, especially the content scores.. Music wise? WHO GIVES a shit.. NONE of that music was created by them, all they had to do was borrow all the music already out there.. It's not like they hired a songwriter composer and orchestra and start from scratch.. Player creation scores? Again.. Who really gives a shit.. How much weight did they give that A rating.. 25%? 30%.. As far as I'm concerned, player creation deserves about 10% of the overall rating.. IMO.. Then I come to find out the author is this person www.linkedin.com/in/dalmarus .. Take a look at what he's hired to do since January 2010.. Can you honestly say he's not biased.. OMG.. Good job Ten Ton for showing me your reviews can be extremely biased and skewed .. Next time why don't you have someone that isn't pushing an agenda do the game review..
Not at all. They took the game looked at it for what it is and didn't compare it to other games. He clearly stated everything that needed to be addressed by the developer to make the game last. You would think otherwise he if agreed with your opinion on the game. Only thing biased here is your post
Frost.. next time you might actually want to read all the pages to the thread.. This has nothing to do rather you agree with the review or not.. it's about the appearance of being professional and fair.. I guess you missed that part of the topic..
Not sure I understand the issue. If you don't agree with his review, move on with your life. If is their opinion of STO, and clearly yours differs. Sorry, it just seems you are looking too deep into this subject, and I am sorry your experience with STO was not a good one

Yes.. obviously you didn't understand the issue.. next
I for one have never put my faith in any TTH review especially of MMOs.But that's my personal bias.As to Rydeson's actual point, whilst it does look suspicious without knowing the ins and outs of TTH business dealings with MMO companies and it's staffing structures and policies it's hard to prove any deliberate favorable bias above the normal variance.I do agree with many of his points in the review and feel the written part is fine but I do think the scores and aprticularly the overall scores do not gel well with the actuall written review....but this is hardly the first time that has happened in a review from anywhere in any media.

Your issue is a non-issue, that's the problem. Which has nothing to do with others ability to read. On this site anyone here could be the next reviewer of any game on the site. All of their writing is outsourced, if they like your review they will print it. Regardless of whether you may be the advocate of that game on their forum. There is nothing wrong with this as long as the review itself is fair and understandable.
TTh's reviewer may be the guy filling STO content on their site, however as long as his review is fair, nothing else matters, besides the guy has been there since 05. It's not like STO is his first gig at TTH. Again it's a non-issue.

Seeing as he scored the game well above other major gaming sites and that he is site lead for an STO fan site is probably not a coincidence and clearly an issue. That guy is obviously an STO fan and finds excuses for all of the major shortcomings of the game.
B for gameplay and B+ for value? The game has 1.5 faction, only one linear PvE quest path and repeteable PvP instances that do not change as you level (atleast I never saw any new PvP instances as I went from Lt to Commander). No way an objective person would score B+ for value, heck even Champions Online had more quest lines than this game and it was criticized for being shallow.

Hehe, B+ for value after they cut the price and gave an extra 60 days to new people a few weeks after launch?
Even then, probably not.
I played beta and there was just not enough there to pay full price. $50? Nope.
Maybe I'll play when it is in the $10 bin for a month.

Thanks for posting the review link ST:0 got a B grade I can see how that is upsetting to the OP with 15 ST:0 hate topics. And want to talk biased? ha.
I find the review close to what I would score, I would put the ground combat at D grade though, really unfinished.

Yes.. obviously you didn't understand the issue.. next

My point exactly.

My gaming blog
Hehe, B+ for value after they cut the price and gave an extra 60 days to new people a few weeks after launch?
Even then, probably not.
I played beta and there was just not enough there to pay full price. $50? Nope.
Maybe I'll play when it is in the $10 bin for a month.
Thanks for posting the review link ST:0 got a B grade I can see how that is upsetting to the OP with 15 ST:0 hate topics. And want to talk biased? ha.
I find the review close to what I would score, I would put the ground combat at D grade though, really unfinished.
OH NOES, GOOD REVIEW, MUST BE BIASED!
