If they make this more solo friendly like they claim I couldn't see a reason why I wouldn't want to own this game forever.
Nope, I've never bought a lifetime sub and never will. I don't think it's a scam in most cases (though it is a clear sign of one in some), but I could never see myself even playing long enough to where I would actually be saving money. The only game I actually would have saved money is SWG, and we all know how much that lifetime sub would mean to me now.
Just looking at examples from HG:L, CO and other games that do this, I can't believe anyone would even think about it with what relative stability an MMO really has. One thing I think you are forgetting is I asked two very important conditions regarding a FFXIV lifetime subscription:
"Based on FFXI
and
what you've read/seen of FFXIV previews, would you sign up for a lifetime subscription to FFXIV without hesitation if they offered it?
I didn't say "on blind faith from a company you've never played/tested or never saw anything about".
Toddze said based on his experience with FFXI and obviously he has seen plenty of pics/info/data on previews of FFXIV that he would consider the lifetime. Your position appears to be one from someone who has no information about the game whatsover, nor any track record with the company's previous game thus going on "blind faith".
Your argument with him here is about "blind faith" which isn't what I asked, nor it is what toddze is describing.

No, because I have not yet found a game that could hold me longer than 7-8 months at a time. It needs to be stated that whenever you pay such a large (relatively) sum, you forfeit all of the interest you could be making on the money: Money spent now is much more valuable to the retailer than a flat fee that is less than what it seems to be when adjusted for inflation.
There is no such thing as a free lunch best applies.
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.
I started FFXI on may 1st, 2004. (yes its weird that I even remember the date, but I do) I have 2 characters, so my monthly sub fee is $13.99. 6 years next month sooo 71 months of paid game time. 71x13.99= $993.29! Wow I'm even surprised to see that. So for people who get in at the start and play for many years on end this will be well worth it. If there is such a subscription, I would be the dumbest person ever if I didn't purchase it.
...I need to re-evaluate my spending apparently lol.
You only had one account,i had 2 active at all times and up to 6 active alts,my sub a month was around 40 bucks, don't remember exactly how much. What is odd is that Square never offered us any bargains ever, and that is a long time for a game to go on ,never offering it's customers a bargain. So i would say,no chance Square is going to offer any bargains this time around either ,if anything they seem more reluctant to money gouge.
People used to complain about the time period Square used for sign ups and how they were actually ripping people off, then Square acted like they did everyone a favor by making it standard with all other developers.
Square is a real oddity, they possess some great minds for making games and content, but they really have little clue when comes to marketing and customer support.

I have never done a life-sub. But if SE can make this game awesome I will consider it. I like the Final fantasy series a lot played it back in the day on NES; I am playing FF13 right now which is awesome. FF11 was good but too much grouping I mean a lot of grouping maybe if they making fewer groups and little more solo just balance out the groups and solo it would be AWESOME! Plus they need to add a jump but that’s minor

They already had tons of balance, you could hop on a Summoner or better yet a BST.You could do Campaigns/Beseiged Solo, they had the other quests they added later to add to solo xp.If you get anymore solo, then it just turns into another Wow,and REALLY gets boring.Even if not solo, you could easily duo/trio as well.
As for FFXIII lol,i am not liking it too much, super korny/cheesey dialogue, and incredibly linear,i never sway more than 5 blocks left/right.The character design is also badly linear, not like you have a career choice,i have had tons of CP to completely fill all the class roles the game GIVES you for each player.Weapon advancement?lol i used up all my assets on one weapon, and if they think i am going to farm months on end ,just to advance a few weapons, they are out to lunch.I like cutscenes but it seems i fight two battles then i am watching another cheesey custscene.
FFXIII actually scares me a lot ,if FFXIV copies any of FFXIII,it will be a crap game, especially for a MMO.So judging by Square's last 6 xpacs for FFXI,The Last Remnant and now FFXIII,i would not even consider a lifetime subscription,Square needs to get back to whoever made all the intelligent decisions 5+ years ago.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I might consider a lifetime subscription for this, as long as it's a successful title. The question then becomes, will lighting strike twice?
On the opposite end of the spectrum, I know of a lot of friends who got lifetime subs. for Hellgate. While I enjoyed Hellgate, I had a feeling that the "lifers" were going to be let down... in the end everyone got let down thanks to Bill Roper's mismanagement of FSS.
Of course FSS is a far cry from SE. SE is a proven company with many successful release on various console platforms and pc alike. So sure I might consider it.
No. Because throwing a large amount of money at something you are only likely to use for a few months doesn't make a lot of sense.
My thoughts exactly. Regardless of the title, I am pretty much always against a liftetime subscription. I don't think I've played any MMORPG long enough where I would of actually made out on the deal. Instead, I think I'd feel obligated to keep playing a game that I wanted to quit.
I definately would if I had the money at the time. Let us say it would cost $250 to be safe. IF you are a hardcore MMO player like myself when you get into a new MMO you atleast play it for a whole year and once I played it that long I am pretty much guaranteed to be playing it for another 2-3 years. Between FFXI and WoW I have put in a good 8-10 years worth of playing. With a standard MMO price you are looking at $15 a month. X12 is 180 a year. You would never have to pay again. Also the plus is on this, say for whatever reason you don't like the game, Sell it to someone else, tell them it has a premade character and a lifetime subscription and you could easily get your $250 back. That being the worst case scenario.
FFXIII actually scares me a lot ,if FFXIV copies any of FFXIII,it will be a crap game, especially for a MMO.
I'd say you have nothing to worry about and don't be scared.
FFXIV won't have anymore to do with FFXIII than say... FFXI had with FFX, or FF7 had with FF8, or FFIII had with FFIV. Which basically is nothing. If you haven't noticed, previous Final Fantasys from any number or platform have scarcely anything to do with what followed them.
There are usually small references, like in FF13 Sazh has a baby chocobo nesting in his fro', but its not like you can breed chocobos like you did in FF7, or rent them to ride like in FFXI. The Japanese devs said years ago they don't like to make the following one like the previous one intentionally as it breeds staleness.
This actually gives most pure FFXI fans a bit of sadness as we all liked that one SO much and wouldn't have minded a ton of things repeated from FFXI into FFXIV.

Was FFXI as good 5 years later as it was when you started playing? I'll take a guess and say no, the "new" factor had already worn off at that point.
And then you want to play XIV, which would be like XI? Have fun with that, but as a "pure FFXI fan" I don't agree that I would enjoy a copy of FFXI more than a completely 99% new game that I have not yet tried. I want that "new" factor back, and redoing FFXI ain't going to accomplish that, at least not in the same scale, more like a short burst of nostalgy than anything. Nostalgy doesn't last you far though.

Having the best parts of a game you played for many years is a very good idea to me. I don't think anyone called for a "copy" of FFXI in this thread, or anywhere else. I am not sure why people constantly see what they want to see when it simply hasn't been written there.
For many fans, a ton of FFXI things brought forward does not mean you are taking "90%" of the old game and rehashing it, so I'm not sure how you read things that way. I don't think I need to put down a list of all the things that made FFXI good, or made it bad and say everything I'd like continued.
Most who played it know what made it good and wouldn't mind like seeing those things incorporated all with the new.
You can still get a game with a "new factor" by simply interspersing old themes in with the new. That is why something like music and any artform in general (which a MMO is) has similar themes that repeat and can make improved versions.
They won't release a lifetime subscription for this game in the first years that I am sure off.
Let's face it they made this game to replace ffxi in the upcoming years so they only thing i could see happen is that they give ffxi players the option for a lifetimesubscription for lets say 150 dollar or something and let's say 2 months of free play in ffxiv or something, that way they score both ways.
We probably have to pay something like 15 euro/dollar or whatever for ffxiv so in a year they get like 180 euro/dollar so why would they offer a lifetime subscription while it is pretty common people play a mmo for years if they like it.
I've played many MMOs since, well, since before they were called MMOs. So far, there has been only one game where I would have been better by buying a lifetime (Everquest 1, played for 3 years), and another where I would have 'broken even' (City of Heroes, played for 1.5-2 years).
In my opinion, for most people it's not worth it. Many times fandom and hype make you believe that you will play a game for years and years, but after a few months, you realize it's not true anymore, specially in these times where new MMOs pop every other month (when I played EQ1 for 3 years, well, it was either that or Ultima Online for the first 2 years, and I didn't like UO).
My suggestions:
- Get in beta if you can. See how long it takes to level. If you level too fast, chances are you won't play the game for long.
- Try to remove the fan/hype colored glasses and think objectively. Think about how long it'll take you to get to max level, and see if the high level content is good/big enough to have you do it, day after day, for how long? In most cases, the answer (if you can successfully remove the fan/hype glasses) is just a few months. So, get a 3 or 6 month subscription at reduced prices (14 or 13 instead of 15 per month).

No. I've played about 10 different MMO's in the past 3 years, and only one of them was worth a lifetime sub (EVE).
I would have wasted a horrific amount of money for very little return had I purchased life times subs for even a few of them.
FFIV is an unknown quantity, you can't know if you are really going to like it long term until you've had a decent crack at it (a few months or so)

We probably have to pay something like 15 euro/dollar or whatever for ffxiv so in a year they get like 180 euro/dollar so why would they offer a lifetime subscription while it is pretty common people play a mmo for years if they like it.
I would probably pay up to $200 for a lifetime sub. Plan on playing this game for quite a while.
