Yes I know they're Xfire numbers but....... is it just a bug?

#82 after just six weeks since launch of one of the biggest IP's in the world is astonishing to me.

Now I hope it sinks into oblivion because we might get a chance on a better depiction of the Star Trek universe, I'm glad that I held off on buying this game and find it equally astonishing that people, after reading this and the official forums, are defending this game. Now the numbers say it all can the people who think this game is great really admit to themselves that this is in reality true.

Personally i didnt find the game THAT bad, in fact i liked it quite a bit. But you are right, 82th is bad, no matter what you think of xfire. For the record thats below AoC and Warhammer, but still doing(barely) better than SWG or EQ II.

    www.xfire.com/games/sto/Star_Trek_Online/

That simply does not look good, you can clearly see where the subs of the people who bought the game mid february run out. That is sending a clear message, people are playing the game aslong as they are in the free 30 days, but they dont enjoy it enough to warrant spending 15$ on it.

The good news is that thanks to the heavy instancing and one server mechanic those people that do stay will still always have players around them. The big fails always where two step, first those quit that dont enjoy it, then those that did enjoy it quit aswell because of barren servers and population inbalances.

Holy crap! #152 today. I think a lot of people were waiting for the famed 45 day miracle patch that never appeared yesterday and gave up.  I don't know much about xfire but if its showing usage for a certain section of the community it will be  interesting to see if this is applies to the community at large. If true, sto is tanking much hard than I thought.

I'm waiting for the 25th patch. If a whole bunch of content is not added then I'm gone for awhile. When content comes up to where it should be I'll take another look.

I have little doubt this game is bleeding subs by the day, but  this just doesn't make sense.  Maybe an issue with a Euro proxy/route?

I don't recall the servers being down yesterday at all. Maybe people were avoiding them because they thought the patch was coming out?  I guess we'll see if it rebounds today. I guess it's around midday in europe and there are only about 40 people in the sol instance and about 40 in omega/gamma orionis sector.

If you're waiting for a lot more story missions, don't bother. They're addiing in the ds9 defense fleet action, temple fleet action, respecs and then a lot of cosmetic stuff. On the klingon side, I think they're adding 1 or 2 ship types, nebula exploration missions, klingon version of the existing fleet actions and I think that's it. Respecs were an issue for a lot of people but Im not sure that will keep people around if there's nothing to do.

LOL wait...there's only ONE Sol instance?!?  Heh maybe more people ragequit over the surprising-to-nobody delay of the 45 day patch than I thought.

    Edit: spelling

I think there were like 4 but only about 12 people or so in each. I think sol station had about 200 total in all the instances I could see. Im not sure these are the etched in stone numbers, but over the last few days, the trend in prime time numbers seem remarkably low for an mmo.

With Xfire it is really hard to compare a single game with another. The more PvP a game have the more people use voice chat. Games like Guildwars and Eve will always get comparibly higher rating than games like LOTRO and EQ2.

But trends like dropping down from 52 to 152 is surely a confirmed deep fall unless the server was down for at least 12 hours. My guess is that a lot of people quited when their "free" time was out.

I get that certain types of games are more likely to have people using xfire than others, but a 30 point drop one day and a (so far) 70 point drop the next still doesn't really make sense.  I could have understood a 30 pt drop week or so of March 4th-12th when the very first subs expired, which if I remember was like a 20 pt or so drop over a few days, but these numbers are just OMG.  Were there REALLY this many people holding out hope for a magic 45 day patch?  I guess STO attracted more first time MMO players or desperate Trek fanboys than I thought.

Meanwhile Aion has a solid top 10 position.

I guess that means people prefer "grindy" content (at least it fills some of the long-term expectations of MMOs) than no content at all or something that barely qualifies (if it really qualifies, leaving room for some subjectivity here) as a MMORPG.

I think a lot of people are starting to realize that cryptic's idea of adding "content" is 5 man raids and fleet actions.  It would be interesting to see what the ra5 #'s are, Im guessing it's much more than the <1% they tried to claim 2-3 weeks ago.  Cryptic added one 5 main raid at that level and from their updates won't be adding anything else major until july.  Some people enjoy repetively grinding raids to get marks ect to get better equipment. But on the other side their are people who don't and would like to coninue exploring the sto universe. As the game stands now, the game ends for these people at RA5 because all you have left to do at that level are the nebula mission, infected, pvp missions and the mark of exploration/nebula daily.  A lot of people don't really see any new meaningful content for them being released in the next 6 months.  Cryptics vision that people will stick around and pay $15/month while they put out a 5 man raid every 3-6 months doesn't seem to be working.

Respecs won't do a thing. In other games, respecs can change your gameplay wildly (like, having new powers/spells/skills), so they make more sense. In STO, you still have the same ships and fire the same weapons you did before, but now they'll do 1300 damage instead of 1000 (and this is with a deep respec). When people realize that, they'll leave, so expect even lower numbers a week or two after they add the respec.

Well, there are a LOT of people (majority even) that left before reaching RA5, so guess the % of RA5 can be small. Now, if they consider # of RA5s among # of active accounts, that's a much higher number

  • Xondar123Xondar123 Member CommonPosts: 2,543

I actually came to post this today... But STO's XFire numbers have plummeted (is there a better word for this?) to #152!

This means that STO is now lower than City of Heroes (#147), Star Wars Galaxies (#128), Everquest II (#97), Warhammer Online (#67), DDO (#60) and Age of Conan (#56).

I never, ever expected STO would ever dip so low. When I saw that it was #82, I thought it would hold steady and become a niche game that would stick around forever. Now I'm going to say that STO will be dead and gone in six months to a year. That death will be hastened by Atari losing the two lawsuits against them or the release of another sub-par MMO that fails in the same way as STO and CO.

  • bstiffbstiff Member Posts: 359

I don't know if this is true or not, but some guy on the forum was spouting something about cryptics next game not being nwn but something using the CO engine but set in the real world. CO without superpowers? sounds like a winner to me lol.

It's a little weird to me to be having a community event on the test server.  I don't think I've ever seen that before. Why not have it on the regular server? Oh I guess they're giving away titles and tribble item just to log on to the test server? Things seem to be getting weirder and weirder.

well it's not weird. They want to test the new developments with as many people as possible before pushing the changes to live. Many times, things are tested in a test server, but because there aren't many people there, when things go live new problems show.

  • Darth_OsorDarth_Osor Member Posts: 1,089

Does Xfire not count people playing on test servers as playing?  That would be weird but would explain a 100 point drop in standings at least a little, but I doubt THAT many people bothered downloading the test server client.

I enjoy watching how MMOs are doing on xfire and I have never seen anything like this! Atleast CO had a steady decline down to around #200 not a major dip like this one.

Sadly I think STO sold enough boxes and lifetime subs to clueless Star trek fans so Craptari will keep throwing crap on the wall to see whatever sticks...

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

STO was consistently between 25 and 30 the first month, the free month.  Now the numbers are showing just how many people did not sub and stay past that first free month.  Ill be interested to see where it stands at 3 months, my guess is close to 200.

  • RydesonRydeson Member UncommonPosts: 3,852

I checked out the tribble server to see if things are looking any better there. There were 6 people in sirius sector, 4 in sol system and 20 on sol station. It's still early in the us but later afternoon early evening. I don't the population is hiding on the tribble server.

Heh I didn't really think half the pop was on the test server.  Something is still fishy...a 100 place drop in two days?

Anyone posting here use Xfire and notice a performance hit from a patch this week?

LOL this pretty much sums up Cryptic's latest "efforts" :

I have followed xfire numbers on games for years now, and i never ever have seen anything like this. It cant even be a serverdowntime or broken major ISP route because its a steady decline, arguably a very fast one, but still steady.

To put this in perspective, between march 14th and march 18th there has been a decline of about 85% of people playing. Cant think of any sensible explanation for that, surely it cant be that 85% of the population had their 30 days run out in those 4 days? That doesnt even make remotely sense.

No wonky news message that could explain a epic rage quit either, if it wasnt for someone in this thread confirming that sol only had 4 instances with 12 players each i might even think it a error on xfires part. I would never ever had dreamed this came could crash and burn like this(eventually, without major content added yes, but not in such a short timeframe), at this rate it will fail much more than CO or maybe even hellgate: london ...

And yeah im feeling sorry for the lifers. Cause with this kind of population developement of this came will grind to a standstill(maintanace mode tm), if its not shut down entirely that is. And cryptic will probably crash and burn alongside it, CO might have been a fluke, but their second MMO, with an even stronger IP, failing this hard puts their whole developement model in question. Even with a 2 year dev cycle initial sales will not be able to cover the cost of making the game and buying all the hardware.
