I think the results speak for themselves. Based on 1087 votes, 60.1% of the people prefer Guild Wars 2. Not a surprise to me!
Yeah, I could have guessed that as well.
But that doesn't mean so much in actual player numbers, Wow is by far the largest Western MMO and it is surprisingly low in player score on this site.
MMORPG.coms users are not really the average MMO players so certain games tend to be more popular here than with the average gamer and the other way around.
Besides, this poll is just what game we assume that we will play, since neither are released a lot of things might change.
I think I will play GW2 but I would not be surprised if TOR actually gets more active players anyways.
TOR. The first Guild Wars completely underwhelmed me, so not holding a lot of hope for the second one. Please keep in mind I have nothing against either, they just aren't for me! :d

You're an idiot for thinking this and I hate you with the burning rage of a thousand suns.
Seriously though, I'm more hyped for GW2, but my initial "this is just going to be another stupid WoW clone" reaction to TOR is fading and the game is looking better and better. Still some parts I'm not sold on and still some "too similar to WoW for my liking" bits and pieces, but overall it's looking pretty good.
Well I'm more hyped for GW2. But I wish there had a choice #3 of Archeage. I'm more up for that than the 2 choices. And I read somewhere on this topic about it's Star Wars and that alone will make it more popular. Well let me just say that it takes more than a popular franchise to make a good MMO. Ala SWG, LotRo, and STO. Don't get me wrong. I hope SW:TOR does great. I will give it a try when it goes live. But if I had a copy of both atm. I'd install GW2 first.
Jymm Byuu Playing : Blood Bowl. Waiting for 2. Holding breath for Archeage and EQN.
GW2 for sure. SWTOR looks like a Dragon Age story based rpg with the WOW mmo formula. I love PVP and I'm pretty sure GW2 will have a more robust pvp system, and i like what i've seen so far from the vids online. Animations looks great, combat looks fun, and questing seems cool. I'm dying to see the pvp though. Probably saving the best part for last. SWTOR would have to blow me away with it's pvp system, but i'm not counting on it. I think most of the money went into the story campaigns.
I think old republic is more over-hyped because it is bioware and star wars; I think people are just hopeful that this will be a great star wars mmo compared to SOE and SWG was. As for scessful I think it will boil down to expanions to determine that if either game is able to pull off the sales of WoW expanions that will determine scessus. Old republic will probaby make more money due to the fact that it will have steady monthly fee money; where guid wars will have to rely mostly on people beating the the core Guild Wars 2 before moving on to buying the expanion to make more money.
Guild Wars 2 I will probably get at launch due to it only being a one time fee
old republic i am still on the fence about;because my bother keeps pointing to games like Conan and Warhemmer and little bit to Rift(although Rift has not released a expanionsyet but nobody really talks about it beyond patches) as reason to take a wait and see aproch
I am more hyped for star wars right now due to it being closer to launch, and the fact that guild wars 2 will be to me what guild wars 1 is to me a secondary mmo; although the way Arena net has it going I may give Guild wars 2 more play time
Star Wars was born in the film industry, so it will be seeing more Star wars + MMO fans and thus the filter applied would cause it to have less hype.
Guild Wars was born in the MMO industry and will only ever get all around MMO fans. Fans like me who aren't big fans of Star Wars won't be playing SW:ToR but will be playing Guild Wars 2.
Both games are "THE" MMO's to be playing in the future, however, Guild Wars 2 audience rage is much more broad and will most definitely bring in more hype than SW:ToR.

At first I was all for TOR and just ignored GW2. The idea of a starwars mmorpg with the production qualities of bioware and support of EA.... how could that be anything but an awsome game right?
Sad thing is, slowly I'm looking at TOR and I'm thinking its just not going to be a good game. You can tell its being created by people not used to the MMO scene.
Before I continue please check out these two fanboy "top 10" lists:
Now for me these two sum up my feelings about the two games, I disliked the original GW game but this new game is just that "new. From what I can see, TOR is just another WoW Clone with a big investor trying to reap some of blizzards success.
TOR is being targeted at casual gamers, its using low end graphics (such as the use of low polygon models which give a cell shaded, almost cartoon feeling to the graphics) almost exactly the same as WoW. In a nutshell TOR is not the new experiance many MMO players are going to hope for. The neat features being implemented are just bolt ons to an old game (which just happends to be new... :P)
GW2 however, impresses me. Its going in a brand new direction and it shows. Its got high-end graphics and is targeting multiple skill levels from casual noobie to e-sport insomniac. A great deal of the things being put on the table in this game excite me, maybe thats because I'm a gamer with going on 13 years of MMO experiance and comming across a game which isnt just implementing a new idea or two but a WHOLE NEW EXPERIANCE is somthing rare.
TLDR; Massive SW fan, Massive Lucas Arts and EA fan, starting to think TOR is going to be a flop. I wasnt a massive fan of GW but GW2 is singing all the right tunes and looks to be the next big mmo up there with EvE and WoW.

StarSyth
I think my story is very similar to yours StarSyth. When I first heard about SWTOR I was super hyped. But the more I find out the less interested I get. The opposite is true with GW2. It wasn't even on my radar at first, but then I saw the demos from the previous Gamescon and it's stock has been shooting up in my book ever since.
I don't think SWTOR will flop, but I think GW2 will be better and more innovative game. Just my opinion.
Flop indeed was a strong word, I was talking in a personal sence and not a commerial one. Indeed TOR will have/already has a massive following but the GAME isnt all it should be for me and thats the reason its making me look else where for my "next gaming hit".

EA tends to "streamline" (oversimplify) their products to make it "more accessible" and I usually get bored with their games very quickly. If you hope that Bioware's experience with RPG genre will prevent this - better take a look at DA II.
Judgingfrom the demos, GW 2 is looking AWESOME in every way. Everything a fun MMORPG should be where skill of the player matters most than gears/items.
Clearly GW2 for me. I'll probably get both but i do not find much innovation in TOR, i'm not a SW groupie and for now that game feels like "been there, done that".
Comments
I don't think that's up to the companies, it's up to the fans.
When the fans don't want it anymore, it will die.
More excited for TOR due to the simple fact it is most likely coming out well before GW2 will.
I think the results speak for themselves. Based on 1087 votes, 60.1% of the people prefer Guild Wars 2. Not a surprise to me!

Guild Wars 2 should be the winner in this case.

More hyped for SWTOR myself. Bought GW and hated it but it sounds like GW2 will definately be better than GW so I will buy it as well.
To make this simple TOR since its release will be much sooner. I am looking forward to playing them both though, each for their own reasons
GW2 as i have no plans to play SWTOR.

Agree

SWTOR.
It's Sci-Fi, done so many fantasy already, it's closer to launch and seems to have more of story, which I like.
I wonder how a new poll these days would go.

Well I preordered the CE for SW:TOR SO assume it means that game.
I generally intend on playing both though to see which I actually would prefer, if either.
