Why is it in cheap kid MMORPGs like WoW, you can take your level 80 male dwarf paladin and turn him into a female, as long as you pay $?
Kind of doesn't even make sense or belong in an MMORPG. Why are people ok with that?
Why can you change names too? In case you get blacklisted you can just become someone else. It doesn't make any sense. Someone can ninja loot your raid then switch names and you wouldnt even know.
Why can you transfers servers all the time? Most of the people on a given server didn't even make characters there, they just paid for transfers.
All of these features lead to games that aren't even MMO-like. Your worlds aren't really persistent because the characters can change name, gender, probably race soon, and maybe class in the future. The servers end up being populated with random people you have never even heard of or leveled up with, just a bunch of randoms.
It just doesn't belong. They are just putting these features in for ebayed players who want to buy a new character and feel like it is theirs. What about for people who level up 1-80? They have to share a server with ebayed name changers who they don't even know.

I have news for you. WOW is a GAME. Those are features that people want. Period.
It's exactly as the above poster stated, those features have been in high demand for years now and adding them is not damning to game, okay maybe in RP servers but who cares about them.
since when have you ever known every single player on any game server let alone a portion of said players? and warcraft isnt the only game to do this. Sometimes people get sick of their said name or want to change servers to join a friend or just get plain tired of looking at a male dwarfs butt(but changing to a female dwarf I dont think will fix that particular problem)
I think a lot of people don't want those features too.
Why would you play a server where everyone is an unknown, where characters can somehow change gender or race or class every day
There is no player identity anymore in games like WoW, that is why the game is garbage.
At least in decent MMORPGs you can think of a character as being a race/class/genre and not be wrong.
Back when I played a real MMORPG called EQ.
Of course when you got 8k name changing level 80s on your server you cant really know anyone.
sry to say it but I dont believe you unless EQ had very few people on 1 server
Personally I think it's dumb to even have the restrictions on switching servers. One of the best things WOW could do would be to abolish those barriers and let me play with the 10+ real life people I know who play WOW who I've never played with because the game segregates players by server.
(To be honest, if WOW let you freely switch servers like Guild Wars lets you switch instances, the WOW-haters would merely criticize that from the other angle of it not being "MMO" like to have instances...even though servers essentially are instances, just ones you can't switch between.)
At the end of the day, Blizzard makes games focused on fun. Making a "world" is secondary to making a "game" to them, and the subscriptions came in as a result of their MMORPG being the best game on the market (even if it's not the best world.) These conveniences merely help facilitate fun gameplay by removing potential stumbling blocks to having a good time (I was so glad to change my female troll rogue to a male orc -- I seriously hardly ever played that character specifically because I regretted making it a female troll years ago...then I made the switch and had no trouble getting her to 80 and having a blast running dungeons.)

Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level, then beat you with experience.
I'm fairly certain you can do that in real life as well regardless of whether people like that feature or not.

1) Race change - gnomes are stunty and have sight issues so I know lots of people that changed race from gnome to say night elf
2) Gender - like that is a massively important thing in mmorpgs, where most males play females so they can watch their bottoms (Told to me by guys who play female characters)
3) Can't change class...learn your facts before you abuse :P
Server transfers/name changes aren't that good I agree, but neither are they all bad. Servers have cycles and some people can't be bothered to wait for a server to cycle up to full again so they mvoe, or they've been in every top end guild on the server and find that none of them fit what they need etc etc. Of course there are the people that ninja, rob etc but they can always be rooted out by people and server transfer people are always doubled and triple checked in my guild.
Why does it bother you, since it's "a cheap kid mmo"? A kid mmo where average playerbase is around 30 ^^
I play mmo's with these features so I can switch name/look to hide from biased, narrowminded people.

Well if you don't like the features offered OP, don't use them. It's as simple as that really.
I know this is a semi troll post but this quote is full of wins. I might get ban for posting just that but it is so worth it!
Now that is just stupid. Not everyone uses the name changing service all the time. It costs money, you know.
SACRILEGE!
Burn him at the stake!
On a more serious note:
Of all the things that DO bother me about WoW "features" and mechanics....these are probably the lowest on the list. Honestly, I seriously doubt many people are using them on a frequent basis. These changes to race, name, and/or server....cost 25 USD a pop. I doubt many people are spending 25-75 extra dollars a week (or even a month) fiddling with this stuff. Oh...and you cannot change classes. I don't remember if you said that or not...but you can't. You can change gender, name, or server location....pretty much just like in real life, actually. Although in RL you COULD also change jobs (classes)...surely they don't have any intention of adding that too? *ponders the thought* ....naaah....

Well personally I think it is dumb to let people switch servers.
Want to play with your friends? Pick the same server.
Servers aren't instances, although you can keep using that meaningless analogy.
Servers without transfers are persistent worlds
Instances are never persistent
WoW is a game with a collection of instances that can't be changed
EQ is a persistent world that can be changed
Can't change classes yet.
Oh, you can change servers IRL? Can I go into an alternate universe IRL? Right
Yeah, and you can change jobs IRL, but you don't start out at max level.
Change class, level 1.
Classes should be a skill that can be advanced instead of being tied to a character.
If this was occuring in a game where people cared about their reputations and the reputations of other players, I would see why it could be a problem. But seriously, it's WoW. You can't swing a dead cat without knocking over 6 idiots. So no harm, no foul in this case.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
You do know EQ has these paid character services right? You're bringing up EQ as a counter point to WoW, when in fact EQ also have these character services. http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/character_services.vm
EQ1-AC1-DAOC-FFXI-L2-EQ2-WoW-DDO-GW-LoTR-VG-WAR-GW2-ESO
Or is this part of some stupid double standard?
Also, I'm not really certain how old the features are since I only returned to EQ about 9 months ago, but you can change your race and sex, as well.
Blizzard makes a lot of money for a reason, if people did not want this option, blizzard wouldnt have it.
I dont understand why it would really bother anyone anyway. Who cares if you change your server or name or what your character looks like.
Gotta be a troll. EQ has a lot of the same payed features. The reason Blizzard has these features involved in their game is because when a game as over 150 servers, theres a big chance that you have friends in real life that you didn't know played wow. Maybe you want to go play it with them without releveling? It makes perfect sense to just want a server transfer to get there. Maybe you got tired of being on a locked server, with a queue time, they offered free transfers off onto servers that had less population so you didn't have to wait to play.
Why would I criticize a game that isn't popular anymore?
I never liked the "Legends" server bullshit they had in Everquest.
Name changes, transfers, race change, class change, gender change are all lousy features. Just because people want them doesn't mean they should have them. People don't know what is best for them, they aren't intelligent enough to know what is best. How do you have an MMORPG without a persistent server? It doesn't make sense. You should play on a server with people you know and you shouldn't be able to have your server invaded by randoms from another server.
While the OP's post is a bit over the top he is right about EQ1. Reputation did matter. People that were bad players did not get good groups, This was because of the mechanics of the game required interdependency which is something WoW does not require. Unlike EQ1 people in WoW have always been able to level without help from others. Which means they can be as a big jerk as they want to and get away it as there are no consequences. Given the type of gameplay WoW has I think the orginal posters points do not make any sense simply because reputation does not matter in WoW or any game nowadays for that matter. Server reputation means nothing in all games now rather people are isoloated by their personal relationships and guilds. Which makes transferring characters and name changes meaningless.
All that being said I would love to see a game that made reputation matter like EQ1. In EQ1 players showed curtsey to other players. Good players would never leave a group without an hour warning notice and hopefully finding their own replacement. People would not steal camps they would do camp checks. Kill stealing and rude behavior was almost unheard of as essentially those players would have to reroll. Like the real world reputation mattered more than anything else. We will never have those days back but we should feel fortunate for having been there.
